Informing The “Naive Triangle": Evidence-Based Transformations In New Young Adult Library Spaces, Anthony Bernier

Faculty Publications

Given recent technological innovations the notion of serving teenage populations obliges libraries to aspire to new design and spatial visions. Youth, historically not deemed entitled to an equitable share of public environments, has frequently been viewed as creating conflict in libraries, or as librarian Lynn Cockett observed, “Inviting young people to a library that is architecturally not prepared to handle normal adolescent behavior can have some pretty negative consequences.” Even under some of the best design processes, however, a kind of “Naïve Triangle” develops: architects, who frequently know little about libraries or youth aesthetics, work with librarians (with little architectural …

METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) is an XML-based, data communication standard used for digital collections in cultural heritage institutions, including libraries, archives, and museums, and maintained by the Library of Congress. One of the main issues with METS is how it can be used with external schemas such as MODS, PREMIS, or Dublin Core. This paper includes a brief description of METS as a wrapper …

When Caring Hurts: The Work Of Strained Relationships In Transnational Families, Valerie Francisco

Faculty Publications, Sociology

The normative conception of care work is described through qualities of nurturance, love and warmth in the intimate relationships of family members. Based on the definition of care work as nurturance, transnational children narrate the emotional distance to their migrant parents with cynicism. Yet, children left behind still attend to the necessary work needed to keep their families …

Help-Yourself City: Market-Driven Planning And D.I.Y. Responses In Making The “Neoliberal” Streetscape, Gordon Douglas

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

Since the 1970s, the consequences of global economic restructuring and the rise of free-market “neoliberal” ideologies in governance have been visible in most every arena of social life, but are perhaps nowhere more visible than in urban space. The humble bus stop, a basic element of local transit service, is today often turned over in large part to private advertising interests and in the process has become both an indicator of neglect and a symbol of the commodification of public space. This paper examines such physical manifestations of neoliberal planning policy in the urban streetscape – spatial neglect and inequality …
