The Tribal Transportation Planning Needs Assessment Study was a collaborative project conducted by Caltrans and the Mineta Transportation Institute, San Jose State University. The primary goal of the project was to identify the current state of transportation planning activities and partnerships within Tribal governments in California, so that Caltrans can meaningfully engage more actively with Tribal governments early in the planning process and better meet the transportation needs of Tribal communities. The study focused on the 109 federally recognized Tribal Nations in California, and collected data through a survey questionnaire. The key task undertaken by the study team was to …

Learning the essential concepts and skills of information architecture (IA) has the potential to not only significantly extend the abilities of practicing library and information science (LIS) professionals, but also to evolve their professional identities and envisioned career opportunities. An online course on IA was designed around: the principles of threshold concepts, practical knowledge for the workplace, and professional ‘soft’ skills, such as collaboration and basic project management. Academic Librarians: Their Understanding And Use Of Emotional Intelligence And Happiness, Michele A.L. Villagran, Lisa Martin

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to understand the interrelations between emotional intelligence and happiness through an exploration of academic librarians. The researchers' premise was that academic librarians who rated themselves as more competent in the emotional intelligence dimension would also rate themselves highly in satisfaction with life.
Results from the study show that academic librarians self-reported levels of happiness and competence with emotional intelligence that are within average range, however, they struggled to apply emotional intelligence and happiness skills when asked to demonstrate with examples. Since March 2020, a group of librarians, professors, and legal professionals have been monitoring legal responses to COVID-19 throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Each member of the project is currently following various countries within this region. In this article, the authors will describe how the project was created and highlight the initial challenges in terms of securing and evaluating trustworthy sources of information in the middle of a pandemic. The authors will summarize the legal responses and any disinformation issues within the countries they have been monitoring: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Outreach to immigrant communities is a long-standing aspect of United States (U.S.) library service. This area of library and information science (LIS) practice is vital given that immigration continues to dominate policy and public discourse. There is a need to advance U.S.- based LIS education so that new library professionals are aware of the sociopolitical implications of engagement with immigrant communities. We introduce a framework to guide instruction on best practices for outreach to immigrant communities within LIS courses. Constructing Information Experience: A Grounded Theory Portrait Of Academic Information Management, Lettie Y. Conrad, Christine S. Bruce, Virginia M. Tucker

Purpose
This paper aims to discuss what it means to consider the information experience of academic information management from a constructivist grounded theory perspective. Using a doctoral study in progress as a case illustration, the authors demonstrate how information experience research applies a wide lens to achieve a holistic view of information management phenomena. By unifying a range of elements, and understanding information and its management to be inseparable from the totality of human experience, an information experience perspective offers a fresh approach to answering today's research questions.

Research is presented from the phase one exploration of the cultural intelligence (CQ) of special librarians including international information professionals. This research was inspired by three focused questions: (a) What is the overall level of CQ of participating special librarians?, (b) What variations exist among the four factors of cultural intelligence within the participants?, and (c) What are the viewpoints of these librarians about the importance and value of cultural intelligence within their organizations? The research study focused on those who currently worked in a specialized setting such as business, government or information centers around the world. This article describes a mixed methods research study of current Pennsylvania librarians to understand the phenomena of cultural intelligence within Pennsylvania libraries. The researcher surveyed Pennsylvania Library Association membership in September 2019. Survey participants took a cultural intelligence assessment, responded to qualitative questions, and addressed demographic questions. Overall, participants had varying levels of cultural intelligence, felt that cultural intelligence was important to their organizations and found value in its application. The results can inform library professionals and human resources about the importance of incorporation of cultural intelligence within everyday practices and communication with staff within libraries. Digitization and digital preservation are rapidly becoming the standard forms of preservation for libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions, yet there is still much confusion as to what they mean and how they are meant to be used. Through a review of the recent literature, this paper aims to define both concepts, as well as find some of the common challenges associated with these preservation processes. Different preservation methods, collaboration techniques, and metadata schema are also discussed.

An Online Competency Test For Information Literacy: Development, Implementation, And Results, Lynn Cameron, Rebecca Feind

Librarians, faculty, and assessment specialists at James Madison University (JMU) collaborated to develop an online Information-Seeking Skills Test (ISST) to measure competencies relating to information literacy. In this paper we will report on how we developed and implemented the test as a required competency for all first-year students in General Education. We will also report on test results, challenges in implementing a competency test for all freshmen, our training program for faculty, and our remediation program.
