The Virtue Of Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Jan 2007

The Virtue Of Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Reference work is neither an art nor a science. Its motivating virtue is an intellectual virtue, but the one most difficult to teach: what Aristotle called phronesis, which is usually translated as prudence or practical wisdom. Reference is a phronetic activity. The concept of "virtue ethics," and Aristotle's views on virtue are applied to library reference, and applied to being a reference librarian.

The Management Of Staff Records At Delta State University Library, Abraka, Nigeria, Blessing Amina Akporhonor, Enemute Basil Iwhiwhu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper describes records management practice for personnel files at Delta State University Library, Abraka, Nigeria. Data were collected through interview and observation. Manual filling systems such as registers are used for staff records, and most files are too voluminous. There is a space constraint due to the lack of a retention and disposal schedule and the lack of a computer system. It is recommended that the staff responsible for the files undergo records management training programmes or that a diploma holder in records management with computer knowledge be employed, and that records should be computerized.

India’S Emergence As A “Responsible” Nuclear Power, Karthika Sasikumar

Faculty Publications

In 2005, India and the United States announced a nuclear “deal” that would seek to clarify India’s ambiguous status in the nuclear order. This announcement represented the fruit of many years of careful Indian diplomacy aimed at establishing its identity as a responsible possessor of nuclear weapons and forging a closer alliance with the US. This article provides a concise description of the provisions of the 2005 India-US nuclear agreement, and analyzes its global, regional, and domestic implications. While …

Collaboration: Critical Success Factors For Student Learning, Ken Haycock

Faculty Publications

Several studies identify collaboration between classroom teachers and teacher-librarians as a key factor that affects student achievement. Studies in teacher-librarianship have established procedures and processes for effective collaboration. This study examines collaboration from a broader theoretical and research perspective, beginning with 20 factors that specifically influence successful collaborations. These are clustered in six areas: factors related to the environment, to membership characteristics, to process and structure, to communication, to purpose, and to resources. Research from teacher-librarianship is then applied to substantiate and reinforce the factors and provide context for successful collaboration and thus effect on students' learning in schools. Death And Taxes, Including Inflation: The Public Versus Economists, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel Jan 2007

Death And Taxes, Including Inflation: The Public Versus Economists, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel

Faculty Publications

Inflation worries the general public much more than it does the economics profession, and economists remain perplexed as to exactly why. The costs that concern economists are inflation’s deadweight loss. But that is only a part of the losses that concern the public, because inflation simultaneously transfers some of people’s income into the hands of government. The fact that the seigniorage tax may pay for programs they favor is a separate issue. Moreover, unlike income and other taxes, which people in democratic countries may think they have some control over through voting, seigniorage appears utterly arbitrary. In fact, people can …

Linking Research And Policy: The Case Of Ghana's Rice Trade Policy, Aharon Degrassi Jan 2007

Linking Research And Policy: The Case Of Ghana's Rice Trade Policy, Aharon Degrassi

Faculty Publications, Geography

Agricultural trade policies, in particular import tariffs to protect domestic production, constitute a highly contested field of agricultural policy. In view of the recent focus on “evidence-based policy making†in the international development debate, the question arises as to which extent research-based evidence is used in such policy decisions, and which role research plays as compared to other political factors. Against this background, this paper seeks to examine and explain research-policy linkages in the case of rice tariff reform in Ghana. It is based on literature reviews and 70 interviews. The paper uses a historical cultural political economy approach, and …
