The elderly population in America is expected to more than double over the next half century. Consequently, the corresponding growth of the culturally Deaf' elderly population becomes important to examine. Because this population is a subgroup of both the hearing elderly and culturally Deaf populations, the expectation is that mental health professionals working with Deaf elderly clients will have specific concerns and will behave in ways that are specific to this population. Although deafness does not eliminate membership in racial, ethnic, linguistic, or cultural groups, American, Anglo-Saxon, middle-class families, whose primary language is Standard English, have been the reference point in defining deafness. Research related to cultural differences in perceptions and responses to deafness has been scant. Children of color are largely at-risk for hearing loss due to disproportionate rates of poverty. The purpose of the present study was to examine the perceptions and responses to deafness among African American hearing families with deaf and hard-of-hearing children. This article discusses the role of an interpreter working with vocational rehabilitation consumers in an occupational context with or without a job coach. It describes the necessity of being flexible to the needs of the deaf person and the demands of the work environment. In this situation, the interpreter who takes into consideration the roles of other involved professionals will provide the most effective services to the consumer.

The use of sign language interpreters in mental health is a subject that has not received a great deal of attention in the literature in recent years. It is critical that interpreters be competent, but not much attention has been paid to other critical elements in the therapeutic triad, specifically what is required of clinicians in order to make therapy using interpreters work. Etiological Histories Of 35 Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Residential School Students With Delinquent Behavior, Katrina R. Miller, Gabriel A. Martin, Pamela Rimmer

This paper reviews the etiological histories of deaf and hard-of-hearing juveniles with delinquent behaviors. The etiologies of hearing loss and incidence of secondary or multiple disabilities in students with delinquent behaviors is examined through a review of existing school records for thirty- five (35) students born between the years of 1939-1986. Case studies, percentages, IQ scores, and reading grade level scores are used to provide a description of the neurological and behavioral issues of deaf and hard-of- hearing residential school youth who have experienced criminal legal problems.
