The Study Of Women Leaders In Southeast Asia, Jin Meichen Jan 2020

The Study Of Women Leaders In Southeast Asia, Jin Meichen

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In a patriarchal society, the subjection of women to men is a universal custom, so any departure from it appears unnatural. However, since the very early time in Southeast Asia, females enjoyed a relatively high status and independence. They also took important roles no matter in the family or the society. As a result, there were many outstanding women leaders and elite women throughout history. However, the concept of patriarchy still affects Southeast Asia society. It is more common for a man to hold the position of leader in society. This article studied female leaders of Southeast Asia during the …

Environmental Displacement In Thailand's Disaster Policy And Practice: A Case Study Of Samut Chin, Cynthia Nitsch Jan 2020

Environmental Displacement In Thailand's Disaster Policy And Practice: A Case Study Of Samut Chin, Cynthia Nitsch

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

As the world is experiencing more frequent disasters, sudden and slow-onset, the number of communities facing displacement is rapidly increasing. Some international frameworks suggest definitions and promote human rights-based approaches to dealing with mobility caused by environmental concerns, however, there is no legal term nor general consensus on how to label this group of people. With a lack of agreement on how to categorize those displaced on the international stage, nations are left to create and implement their own definitions and policies to assist. Displaced groups experience specific vulnerabilities and are at risk of human rights violations. The responsibility to …

Policy Engagements For A Just Decarbonisation: China's 2060 Carbon Neutrality Pledge's Ramifications On The Coal Industry Workforce In Shanxi, Lucile Charriaut Jan 2020

Policy Engagements For A Just Decarbonisation: China's 2060 Carbon Neutrality Pledge's Ramifications On The Coal Industry Workforce In Shanxi, Lucile Charriaut

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

To achieve its ambitious carbon neutrality pledge by 2060, China, whose energy mix is still largely dominated by coal, must progressively phase out coal-fired power plants. Being highly polluting, coal is no longer perceived as suitable to promote a sustainable, clean, and long-standing economy. Shanxi, a landlocked northern province, is considered one of China's most coal-dependent provinces and accounts for a colossal coal workforce depending on the industry. Such a transition will, therefore, considerably alter the economic prospects and labour relations of this province. Considering the inevitability to lay off coal workers, the objective of this thesis is to determine …

Thailand As A Performative State : An Analysis Of Thailand's Cultural Diplomacy Towards The People's Republic Of China, Natdanai Kietigaroon

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Thailand as a performative state is a research that looked at the cultural dimensions of Thailand's diplomacy, by taking the alternative view on Thai cultural diplomacy towards PRC. Thai cultural diplomacy, according to existing literature, revolves around promoting Thainess. However, in the case of China, Thailand has been using Chineseness as Thai cultural diplomacy. The research specifically looked at five Thai state actors that are most involved with Chineseness, namely, the royal family, the government, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Two questions were raised in this research. Firstly, how Chineseness …

A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul Jan 2020

A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. This may be one of the reasons why second language learners frequently encounter difficulties in mastering the English present perfect. As Yoshimura et al. (2014) argue, language learners are likely to have a problem with the form/pattern-meaning mapping in the use of the present perfect. To fill this gap, the present study takes …

Metaphors In U.S. Same-Sex Marriage Discourse: A Corpus-Based Study, Pongbodin Amarinthnukrowh

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research aims to investigate metaphorical patterns in the US legalization of same-sex marriage discourse to shed light on how metaphor is employed to conceptualize same-sex marriage controversies. To this end, a specialized corpus which contains 254 news articles published in 2015 was compiled. The metaphorical expressions in the corpus were analyzed with both "Conceptual Metaphor Theory" (CMT) and "Conceptual Blending Theory" (CBT) to cover not simply the pedestrian uses of metaphors, but also the wild and creative expressions. Specifically, while conventional metaphors were analyzed following the CMT traditions, novel metaphors were analyzed through the lens of blending. The results …

Processing Of English Passive Construction In L1 Thai Learners, Vatcharit Chantajinda

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The objective of this research study is to examine Thai learners’ comprehension of English passive sentences focusing on Thai thùuk-passives, which are usually found in adversative contexts (Po-ngam, 2008; Prasithrathsint, 2010) which are prototypical in thùuk-passives and can also be used in neutral contexts (Prasithrathsint, 2001, 2006), and on be-passives in English, which can be found in all contexts. This work classified English verbs into three types using adversity and naturalness in Thai thùuk-passives, namely Verb Type 1 (adversative and natural in Thai thùuk-passives, e.g., destroy), Verb Type 2 (non-adversative and natural in Thai thùuk-passives, e.g., buy), and Verb Type …

The Effect Of Bank Competition On Bank Stability In Thailand, Kamolwan Yamploy

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research studies the impact of competition on bank stabilities, which are capital adequacy, non-performing loans ratio, interest income risk, and non-interest income risk. Lerner index is used to proxy degree of non-structural bank competition. We use data on 11 Thai commercial banks from the year 2010 to 2018 and employ Panel Least Square regression. Our results show that banks with higher market power tend to have lower risk lending behaviors. As a result, this allows them to have lower level of capital and higher level of risk in non-interest income activities. On the other hand, higher concentration ratio 5, …

Determinants Of Health Promotion Service Consumption In Thailand, Pimpa Vitidladda Jan 2020

Determinants Of Health Promotion Service Consumption In Thailand, Pimpa Vitidladda

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Despite being preventable, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) rank among leading causes of death in Thailand. Four main groups of NCDs involve cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. These chronic diseases worsen economic burden and the quality of life. To ease the burden, health promotion service is one of the tools that can directly cope with risk factors of NCDs. Therefore, increasing health promotion service consumption potentially leads to risk reduction of an individual to develop NCDs. Hence, this research aims to identify the factors influencing health promotion service consumption in Thailand along with marginal effects of each factors. The …

Factors Influencing The Foreign Direct Investmet Inflow In Tourism Industry In Thailand, Pitchapa Tubtimtong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Tourism industry has been considered as an important part of the Thai economy since tourism helps support many tourism businesses, increase employment, and compensate for other industries presenting weak growth, which will generate high income for Thailand continuously. This paper employs multiple regression by using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to investigate factors influencing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in tourism industry in Thailand over the period 2000 - 2019, especially the effect of tourism- induced factors on FDI inflows including growth of tourism industry, tourism average spending, and tourism demand volume. Quarterly data using in this paper is based …

Determinants Of Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions Of Firms In Thailand, Pongpak Weerakiet Jan 2020

Determinants Of Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions Of Firms In Thailand, Pongpak Weerakiet

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this paper, we evaluate the effects of firm-level and country-level variables on the firms' probability of having cross-border M&A deals and the size of the deals. Our sample consists of 87 firms from SET100 Index (firms from financial industry are excluded), and the data between 2009 to 2018 is used in this paper. The results indicate that the increase in ownership advantages of the firms, namely, size and profitability raise the chance of the firms having cross-border M&A deals and the size of the deals. For country-level variables, the results agree with the gravity model that an increase in …

The Defense Of State's Role In Public Policy(รัฐยังต้องมีบทบาทสำคัญในนโยบายสาธารณะ), Pisanu Sangiampongsa

Journal of Social Sciences

Criticisms of the state's role relate to many of its aspects - the continuing expansion of the scope of its responsibilities; its encroachment on people's lives and freedoms through its making of public policy, and its inefficiency of operation, as compared to the private sector. The origin of the state's role and its various types that led to a varying extent of intervention in society are delineated. Economic and political rationales for the state are discussed, arguing for its significance in public life and that the nonexistence of state is implausible. The state's roles in various kinds of public policy, …

Journal of Social Sciences

This study investigates an economic impact of total production factor productivity (TFP) on household income inequality under the dynamic computable general equilibrium model (DCGE). The study reveals that a 5% increase in TFP in all production sectors will result in an increase in real gross domestic product by 5% in the short run and by 6.11% in the long run. Not surprisingly, such continual increase confirms the stylized fact that TFP stimulates gross output value and therefore accrueshousehold incomes inall productionsectors. Nonetheless,TFP hasa detrimentaleffectonincomeinequalityinall productionsectors, both in the medium and long terms. This is because the household income tax rate …

Islamophobia As Represented By Thai Buddhist Organizations(โรคเกลียดกลัวอิสลามที่ถูกนำเสนอโดยองค์กรชาวพุทธไทย), Jesada Buaban

Journal of Social Sciences

Scholarly works on Islamophobia in Thailand always focus on the state's marginalization of Islam in Thai historiography and ultimately makes Muslims become strangers. I argue that the negative labeling of Islam has not only been adopted by the Thai state to support its militarization in the three southern provinces, but is also reproduced by conservative Buddhists to seek supports from the governmentand Buddhist followersthemselves. Therefore, IslamophobiainThailand cannot be understood without scrutinizing Buddhist groups who reproduce hatred and anti-Islam campaigns. This phenomenon occurs under the condition that the Thai state fails to promote secularism. While the government chooses to assimilate and satisfy …

Journal of Social Sciences

This article explores how various Orientalist perspectives and their eventual hybridisation haveshaped differentconceptualisationsofspacealong theThai-Lao border. Inthiscase, theoriginal Orientalist spatial conceptualisation of borders was passed on from French during the colonial days to local academia and state practitioners along the Mekong basins. It held that the western spatial conceptualisation was objective and superior to others. It privileged the assumption that space and people should be separated according to their own state. Also, such conceptualisation was used in nationalistic policy formulation on space management by the states. However, such spatial conceptualisation became hybridised when the Westphalian border was embraced by the local …
