Suitable Low Income Flood Resilient Housing, Nachawit Tikul

Applied Environmental Research

Climate change is a critical issue for all of humanity. It is predicted that Thailand is likely to have an increasing frequency and intensity of rainfall and storms which, will result in a more severe flash flood problem. Slum residents in Chiang Mai are one of the groups of people who are vulnerable to flooding impacts of climate change. The objective of this study is to analyze the flood-resilient housing style of low-income people. Data from 3 slums (146 households) which encounter different kinds of floods every year, i.e. drainage floods (Ban Sanku: 21 households), river floods (Kampang Ngam: 64 …

Influence Of Psychological Factors On Climate Change Perceptions Held By Local Farmers In The Northeast Of Thailand, Suthirat Kittipongvises, Takashi Mino

Applied Environmental Research

Global climate change is considered one of the most critical socio-ecological challenges of the 21st century. In recent years extreme weather events have increased significantly in Thailand asin other parts of the world. In most cases, climatic variability has always been associated with its implications for agriculture. To date, however, there has been inconclusive understanding of farmers' capacity to detect climate change and its potential impact. This study therefore explores how Thai farmers perceive global climate change and, further, to examine the influence of psy-chological factors on these perceptions. The study used mixed research methods, with both quali-tative and quantitative …

Applied Environmental Research

The construction project for the developed area in Kaeng Khoi District, Saraburi Province, Thailand, drafted by Chulalongkorn University has raised various concerns over environmental impacts, particularly relating to public health and air quality. In order to investigate impacts of this project, air quality sampling was conducted in Tan Diew Sub-district, Huai Haeng Sub-district, Cham Pak Paew Sub-district and some surrounding sites of Chulalongkorn developed area by gravimetric method using a high volume air sampling machine. Two types of particulate matter including total suspended particulate matter (TSP) and particulate matter < 10 µm (PM10) were continuously monitored during all 3 seasons for a study period of 3 years in order to compare the effect of seasonal variation on the amount of particulate matter generated in each study area, to study the correlation between TSP and PM10, and finally to identify other causal factors related to particulate levels. Results from this study indicated that TSP and PM10 both reached the highest in winter followed by summer and appeared to be at the lowest level during the rainy season. In addition, causal factors such as wind direction and human activities also influenced particulate levels in each study area.

Achieving Access To Health For Mobile Populations Through Community Health Systems On The Thai-Myanmar Border, Cynthia Maung, Tara Russell

Asian Review

Over the past two decades, communities in the border areas of Tak Province, Thailand, and in neighboring districts of Myanmar, have established a primary healthcare system. Conflict, displacement and institutional neglect have left this region of Eastern Myanmar without functioning public health services. Forced displacement and statelessness excluded these same communities from health services in Thailand. This paper presents two short case studies that describe how the network prioritizes access to basic care at the village level, with ethnic and community organizations training village health workers to provide health education and to manage common diseases. More serious cases are referred …

China's Economic Integration And New Chinese Migrants In The Mekong Region, Nguyen Van Chinh Jul 2015

China's Economic Integration And New Chinese Migrants In The Mekong Region, Nguyen Van Chinh

Asian Review

This paper is based on the findings from fieldwork conducted in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) in 2013 and 2014, and argues that the movement of new Chinese migration is an integral part of Chinas capital flow of investment, trade and economic aid. These four Mekong countries are ideally placed to receive Chinese migrants, because capital flow from China has steadily increased in line with the strengthening of ties between China and the CLMV countries, where new Chinese migrants can access the existing social networks created by the local ethnic Chinese. It is important for CLMV countries to establish …

Teak Log Coffins In Northwest Thailand: Dated By Dendrochronology And 14cwiggle Matching, Nathsuda Pumijumnong, Sineenart Wannasri May 2015

Teak Log Coffins In Northwest Thailand: Dated By Dendrochronology And 14cwiggle Matching, Nathsuda Pumijumnong, Sineenart Wannasri

Applied Environmental Research

Log coffins have been discovered in caves and rockshelters in the Pang Ma Pha district, Mae Hong Son province, Northwestern Thailand. Most are made of teak wood. Many researchers have used the 14C method to determine their age. However, 14C cannot provide as precise a ca-lendar age as dendrochronology. In this paper, we therefore applied dendrochronology analysis to a number of teak log coffins at the Ban Rai Rockshelter to establish a floating chronology and to cross-date the coffins relative to each other. Then, wiggle matching was used for one log cof-fin to derive an approximate but absolute calendar age. …
