Thinking On New System For Big Data Technology, Xueqi Chegn, Shenghua Liu, Ruqing Zhang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
In recent years, there are such significant improvements on the performance and efficiency of big data technology and system. As it is widely applied in various fields, big data has empowered industrial intelligence, and is the key step into the intelligent stage of information society. Therefore, we are facing greater challenges nowadays, such as the paradox of data flooding and high-value data lacking, the complexity and uncertainty of big data analysis, and the difficulty to balance the data on sharing and circulation, and trustworthiness and security. Moreover, these challenges will not only promote the innovation and change of big data …

Introduction Widespread problems of psychological distress have been observed in many countries following the outbreak of COVID-19, including Australia. What is lacking from current scholarship is a national-scale assessment that tracks the shifts in mental health during the pandemic timeline and across geographic contexts.
Methods Drawing on 244 406 geotagged tweets in Australia from 1 January 2020 to 31 May 2021, we employed machine learning and spatial mapping techniques to classify, measure and map changes in the Australian public’s mental health signals, and track their change across the different phases of the pandemic in eight Australian capital cities.
Results Australians’ …

Dr. Harvey W. Wiley's Fight For Food Safety In The Late 19th Century And Early 20th Century, Katherine E. Dixon
The Exposition
In the late 19th Century, a researcher by the name of Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley. He had discovered that food manufacturers were adulterating and misbranding many of their food products. Dr. Wiley had realized that these chemicals being added to these food products were dangerous for human consumption and were not being put on the labels. Dr. Wiley realized this was a huge problem for Americans and dedicated his career to fight for regulations against this. He started an experimental group called the Poison Squad which helped to bring media attention to this issue.

Quantitatively Comparing Elite Formation Over A Century: Ministers And Judges, John Hogan
Datasets
The abstract of the draft article that the datasets come from states:
In democratic societies the role of the education system is seen as crucially important to their development. It is critical in structuring society and in the value of its human and social capital. In particular, the role played by the education system in the creation and reproduction of the governing elites, and its countervailing potential to create a more meritocratic and egalitarian society has been an enduring topic of concern, research and debate. However, many of these debates have been rendered opaque by an inability to quantitatively examine, …

Economic Analysis Of The Critical Habitat Designation Process For Endangered And Threatened Species Under The Endangered Species Act Of 1973, Katherine Fosburgh
Economic Analysis Of The Critical Habitat Designation Process For Endangered And Threatened Species Under The Endangered Species Act Of 1973, Katherine Fosburgh
Honors Projects
Habitat destruction is the leading cause of biodiversity loss in the US. Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), habitat deemed essential to endangered and threatened species recovery is proposed as critical habitat (CH). CH areas are subject to regulations that could alter land development plans or increase costs. The potential economic opportunity cost created by CH regulations may lead to the exclusion of land proposed for CH designation, thereby reducing the conservation benefits of the CH rule. In this paper, I use a unique dataset collected from Federal Register (FR) documents to estimate the reduction in CH acreage from proposed …

Assessment Of The Institute For Research Design In Librarianship (Irdl): Impact On The Research Productivity And Careers Of Academic Librarians, Frans Albarillo, Marie Kennedy, Kristine R. Brancolini
LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations
Objective – This article reports the survey findings from a mixed-methods assessment of the six-year Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL). The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) provided funding for IRDL from 2014-2019; during this time, 124 academic and research librarians participated in a year-long continuing education program for novice researchers. This article assesses the effectiveness of IRDL in meeting short-term and long-term goals related to research productivity, job performance, and identity as a researcher. Beyond the assessment of IRDL itself, the study addresses the implications of IRDL for creating effective research continuing education programs and institutional …
The Roles Of Set Size And Nonexample Type On Concept Formation, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeleine J. Murphy
The Roles Of Set Size And Nonexample Type On Concept Formation, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeleine J. Murphy
Graduate Student Scholarship
Concept formation is demonstrated when a learner responds when new examples are presented (i.e., generalization) but not when new nonexamples are presented (i.e., discrimination). Gradually increasing the number of examples and nonexamples taught together (i.e., set-size expansion) promotes concept formation with nonhumans. Although set size impacts speed of acquisition with humans, concept formation has not been evaluated. Therefore, the primary purpose of the current study was to compare acquisition and concept formation during two procedures: set-size expansion and single set-size. College students were taught two biological concepts, one using set-size expansion and the other with the full …
