Social Composition, Interaction And The Success Of High School Football Teams, Jill Kendrick Schneider
Social Composition, Interaction And The Success Of High School Football Teams, Jill Kendrick Schneider
Sociology ETDs
Is there a sociological explanation for the pattern of consistent winning and consistent losing that is found at all levels of football competition as well in the New Mexico high school football program? A study of the 1975 New Mexico high school football season presents evidence that definite performance patterns have persisted over the last ten years and therefore cannot be strictly accounted for on the basis of ability and talent of individual players and coaches. It is hypothesized that the social structure and social interaction of each team were possible factors affecting team performance. Three hypotheses were tested: 1) …

Personality Testing By The Schools: A Possible Invasion Of Privacy, Angelika Hoyman
Personality Testing By The Schools: A Possible Invasion Of Privacy, Angelika Hoyman
IUSTITIA
Contemporary critics, concerned with the maintenance of personal privacy, have termed the use of personality tests a "white glove rack and screw" . Monroe H. Freedman, Dean of Hofstra University School of Law, while testifying before a congressional subcommittee, compared the use of psychological tests to the administration of truth serums and found both to be an affront to personal dignity.
Nevertheless, the 1960's witnessed a three-fold increase in the number of school counselors employed in most schools and a nation-wide survey of these counselors indicated that at least one-third of their time was spent in dealing with the personal …
The Conflicts Between Female Inmates' Needs And Prisoners' Goals, Aline L. Mohr
The Conflicts Between Female Inmates' Needs And Prisoners' Goals, Aline L. Mohr
IUSTITIA
A comparison of the purposes behind the existence of male and female institutions reveals that several common goals exist: custody, deterrence, and rehabilitation. An examination of these goals of women's prisons can be best understood in the context of whom they are aimed to serve. If the goals are to serve society alone, then the custody of female offenders is undoubtedly viewed as an accomplished goal, since society is protected and secure from the infliction of criminal acts by these female offenders. However, if the goals are directed at the inmates as well, deterrence of further criminal activity and rehabilitation …
Toward A Critical Theory Of Female Criminality, Ann Curry Thompson
Toward A Critical Theory Of Female Criminality, Ann Curry Thompson
IUSTITIA
Twentieth-century theories about female criminality are the weakest link in conventional criminology, representing the most conservative and unscientific thinking about human nature and social organization. Traditional thinking about female criminality reflects the general inability of conventional theorists to examine categories of sex, race, and class oppression as determined by the basic social structure of a particular society and as they relate to deviance and crime. The result has been that female deviance has been analyzed solely in light of assumptions about women's biological nature. Whether there is indeed something distinctive about female crime which can be explained apart from a …

Changes In Environmental Bias: An Analysis Of The Environmental Movement, 1969-1975, Kathryn Utrup Finch
Changes In Environmental Bias: An Analysis Of The Environmental Movement, 1969-1975, Kathryn Utrup Finch
Sociology ETDs
The environmental movement is analyzed as a major social reform movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Emerging from the conservation movement at the turn of the century, the environmental movement progressed through a series of evolutionary stages from its revival in the early 1960s to its decline after the energy crisis of 1973.
This research traces both the general trends in the movement's social base of support and in its counter movement over the period from 1969 through 1975. Particular emphasis is given to the analysis of change in pro-environmental bias and anti-environmental bias in the pre-energy crisis period of …

Follow-up was done in 10 situations where Master's Degrees in Social Work, Counseling, and Psychology were required for employment—to determine the particular value of the degree for the specific position. Sex And Marital Status Differences In Death Anxiety, Michael Cole
Sex And Marital Status Differences In Death Anxiety, Michael Cole
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Previous research in death anxiety has suggested that marital roles, and especially the male’s role as the family provider, influence the sex differences in death attitudes (Diggory & Rothman, 1961; Tolor & Murphy, 1967). The present study attempted to directly investigate the effect of marital roles by comparing the sex differences in death anxiety scores (as measured by the Templer Death Anxiety Scale) of married persons, with and without children, and single persons. In addition, 20 demographic covariates were investigated to observe their possible effect on death anxiety. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that marital status was …

Editor's Note: The 1975 Legislative Session of the Nebraska Legislature recognized the need to analyze all available options for dealing with the problems of urban redevelopment: lack of adequate housing, revitalization of older business districts, and possible incentives for investment in older neighborhoods in Nebraska. Accordingly, Resolution 53 directed the Legislature's Urban Affairs Committee to study a) causes of urban decay, b) current Federal and State programs in urban redevelopment, c) laws and programs of other states that encourage redevelopment, d) incentives to encourage urban redevelopment and e) needs for changes in Nebraska law.
