State-Trait Anxiety And Incidental Learning Of Shapes And Colors In Learning Disabled Adolescents, Ladonna Gail Cabell

The present study attempted to examine the effects of anxiety on incidental learning of colors and shapes. The central task was the learning of six eve syllables with meaningfulness association values between 2.41 and 2.49. The incidental taslc was the learning of the color or shape that the syllable was printed on. The subjects were thirty-four male and female adolescents identified as learning disabled. The subjects were divided into three anxiety groups (high, medium and low) using Spielberger's State­ Trait Anxiety Inventory. The results· indicated that anxiety (state or trait) had no significant effect on incidental learning in adolescent subjects. …

The Comparative Effects Of Self-Evaluation And Self-Reinforcement Training In The Treatment Of Depression, David P. Tressler

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Rehm's self-control model of depression was evaluated by dismantling the self-control therapy into separate therapies based on self-monitoring plus self-evaluation and self-monitoring plus self-reinforcement training respectively. Seventeen volunteer female subjects selected on the basis of MMPI, Beck Depression Inventory and interview criteria were randomly assigned to the two conditions for six weekly therapy sessions. Results showed significant treatment effects on level of depression, overall pathology, behavioral ratings of verbal response levels and activity reinforcement potential. Separate comparisons of ratings of current functioning and performance criteria yielded significant effects on ratings of current functioning in favor of the self-monitoring plus self-reinforcement …

The Effects Of Two Training Procedures On The Acquisition And Retention Of A Sight-Word Vocabulary In Remedial Readers, Marilyn Monteiro

A Trial and Error and an Errorless procedure were used to teach phonically-irregular words to remedial readers. Subjects were six elementary-school students enrolled in a tutorial program. The Errorless procedure consisted of the use of an echoic prime, prompting and cumulative review over words mastered while the Trial and Error procedure consisted of the use of corrections for errors. Five subjects both mastered and retained more words with the Errorless procedure. The average percent of words mastered across all subjects was greater for the Errorless procedure (73% versus 43%), as was the average percent of words mastered on the six-week …

A Discrete-Trial Procedure To Measure Preference For Variable-Interval Over Fixed-Interval Schedules Of Food Reinforcement In Pigeons, Robert I. Cobez

A discrete-trial choice procedure was conducted in which pigeons were sequentially exposed to four constant variable-interval schedules against each of which five different fixed-interval schedules were compared. The five fixed-interval comparison values were presented in a descending then ascending sequence for the first three variableinterval standard conditions. The fixed-interval sequence was reversed for the last variable-interval standard condition. The variableinterval standard conditions were 10, 20, 40, and 40 seconds, respectively, and the five fixed-interval comparison steps for each variable-interval standard condition ranged from a maximum of twice the variable-interval standard to continuous reinforcement in five equal steps. This research examined the validity of videotaped analyses of clinical sessions in comparison to direct (live) observations. The subjects were eleven student clinicians and their respective clients, enrolled Fall Term, 1979, in Portland State University's Speech and Hearing Sciences Articulation and Language and Urban Language Clinics. The Boone-Prescott Interactional Analysis System, a numerically coded system, was used to record clinician/client interactions. Data were obtained for a randomly selected five-minute period from each of thirty clinical sessions.

This thesis explores the role of personal responsibility, counseling, and holistic understanding in the medical treatment of cancer. Moving beyond the traditional medical model that focuses solely on physical symptoms and treatment modalities, the study emphasizes the psychosomatic dimensions of cancer—highlighting the interconnections between mind, body, spirit, and emotions in disease development and healing.

Using a personal case study methodology, the author recounts her own experience with a cancer diagnosis, illustrating how counseling became a transformative tool in confronting psychological and relational stressors that contributed to her physical symptoms. An animal may be considered to be in a state of stress if abnormal behavior or extreme adjustments in its behavior or physiology are necessary in order to cope with adverse aspects of its environment. Methods used to determine if an animal is stressed can be either behavioral or physiological. Behavioral methods may be highly erroneous due to their subjective nature since alterations in behavior do not necessarily prove that an animal is stressed. There is no single measure of stress that can be used in all situations at this time. Every measure must be critically evaluated to ensure that …

Livestock Behavior As Related To Handling Facilities Design, Temple Grandin

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

A knowledge of the behavior of different species of livestock as we// as different breeds within a particular species is essential to the proper planning of a handling facility. An optimal facility should incorporate features which minimize stress on the animal and maximize the efficiency of movement from holding pen to slaughter area. Handler awareness of the animals' perception of critical distance flight zone and personal space requirements also reduces problems with balkin; and alarm behavior. Many improvements can be made with relative ease, thus enabling already existing facilities to upgrade their operations.
