Some Parameters Of Behavioral Contrast And Allocation Of Interim Behavior In Rats, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer Jan 1985

Some Parameters Of Behavioral Contrast And Allocation Of Interim Behavior In Rats, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer

Scholarship

Two experiments examined the effects of baseline reinforcement rate and component duration on behavioral contrast and on re-allocation of interim behavior in rats. Positive behavioral contrast occurred during multiple variable-interval 10-second extinction (VI 10 EXT) after a multiple VI 10 VI 10 baseline condition, but not during multiple VI 60 EXT following multiple VI 60 VI 60 baseline. Component duration had no significant effect on contrast. These results differed from those found in studies of pigeons' key pecking. Contrast was accompanied by an increased rate of drinking in the changed component, but drinking in the constant component did not decrease. …

Variation In Herrnsein’S R0 As A Function Of Alternative Reinforcement Rate, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney Jan 1985

Variation In Herrnsein’S R0 As A Function Of Alternative Reinforcement Rate, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney

Scholarship

In a test of Herrnstein's (1970, 1974) equation for simple schedules, 15 pigeons pecked a key that produced food delivered according to variable-interval schedules. One group of birds was water deprived, and food-reinforced key pecking occurred in the presence of free water. Two other groups were not water deprived; water was present for one and absent for the other. As predicted by Herrnstein, the parameter ro was significantly higher in the water-deprived group than in the two nondeprived groups. Contrary to Herrnstein's interpretation of ro, the rate of drinking varied across schedules. Herrnstein's interpretation can be salvaged …

A Comparison Of Sexual And Physical Assault Court Cases Following The Elimination Of Rape From The Criminal Code Of Canada, Suresh K. Sahjpaul Jan 1985

A Comparison Of Sexual And Physical Assault Court Cases Following The Elimination Of Rape From The Criminal Code Of Canada, Suresh K. Sahjpaul

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of the present study was to determine if the change in the Criminal Code which replaced the old offence of “rape” with the new offence of “sexual assault” had the desired effect of having sexual assault treated similar to physical assault. For this evaluation, five sexual assault cases and 22 physical assault cases were compared on the severity of the charge, the nature of the courtroom process and on the conviction and sentencing patterns. In addition, reporting, founding, clearing and charging rates before and after the new law were statistically compared.

Findings indicated that both sexual and physical …

The Effect Of Experimenter's Warmth/ Coldness On Intrinsic Motivation, Phillip N. Guikema Jan 1985

The Effect Of Experimenter's Warmth/ Coldness On Intrinsic Motivation, Phillip N. Guikema

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Individuals may approach an activity with either intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivational orientations are characterized by simplicity and predictability. Intrinsic motivation is characterized by novelty, complexity, and challenge. Task noncontingent rewards, in contrast to task contingent rewards, have been found to maintain or foster increases in intrinsic interest in a task. One explanation of this effect is that additional nonspecific factors like the perceived warmth of the experimenter was positively correlated with the noncontingent reward condition. To test this assumption, second grade subjects played with a game of intermediate complexity in one of four conditions: "cold" instructor with contingent reward, "cold" …

A Comparison Of Modeling And Instructions On Nonverbal Empathy Behavior In A Simulated Counseling Interview, Robin D. Seipp Jan 1985

A Comparison Of Modeling And Instructions On Nonverbal Empathy Behavior In A Simulated Counseling Interview, Robin D. Seipp

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The relative contribution of modeling and instructions as methods for training counselors in nonverbal empathy was assessed in a 2 X 3 factorial design employing two instruction conditions (Instructions and No Instructions) and three modeling conditions (High Nonverbal Empathy Model, Low Nonverbal Empathy Model, and No Model). Six groups of subjects were presented with the six different combinations of the above conditions and were then asked to conduct a 15-minute interview with a "client." It was predicted that those viewing the High Nonverbal Empathy Model would exhibit higher nonverbal empathy responses in the interview. It was also predicted that instructions …

A Survey Of Interdisciplinary Differences In Attitudes And Morale Within A Psychiatric Hospital, Brian F. Hoffman, Valerie P. Hans Jan 1985

A Survey Of Interdisciplinary Differences In Attitudes And Morale Within A Psychiatric Hospital, Brian F. Hoffman, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

It is clear from a number of research studies that staff attitudes and morale in psychiatric hospitals are influenced by diverse factors. Although staff morale has been studied in several health and human service organizations, there have been few systematic studies of the professional staff in a psychiatric hospital. In particular, little attention has been paid to the effect staff members’ disciplinary affiliations have on their morale and attitudes. The effects of staff members’ dual allegiances (to their discipline and to their interdisciplinary unit) have also not been examined. Conflict may develop in psychiatric hospitals because members of different disciplines …

Transpersonal Psychology And Psychotherapy: A Relational Inquiry, Robert Allen Geller Jan 1985

Transpersonal Psychology And Psychotherapy: A Relational Inquiry, Robert Allen Geller

Theses

This study attempts to determine , through research of the literature of transpersonal psychology, if a specific paradigm for psychotherapy is present in that literature.

The research is viewed from a theme analysis perspective which attempts to isolate the major characteristics of the description s circumscribing transpersonal psychotherapy that emerged consistently . Certain consistent patterns did, in fact, emerge.

The articles are considered against a background that includes the historical appearance of the trans personal movement, the influence of Eastern traditions, a transpersonal model of the person, and various conceptualizations of therapy, transformation, and ultimate liberation.

An appendix is included …

Children's Reactions To The Residential Treatment Setting, Barbara Jane Uhl Jan 1985

Children's Reactions To The Residential Treatment Setting, Barbara Jane Uhl

Theses

This study explores the emotional and psychological reactions of children to residential treatment centers, focusing on themes of separation anxiety, punishment, and the role of early attachment disruptions. Barbara Jane Uhl investigates how emotionally disturbed children perceive their institutional environments compared to children from public schools. Drawing from object relations theory and existing research on institutionalization, the study hypothesizes that children in residential treatment settings often internalize feelings of guilt and punishment as a result of separation from their families and the impersonal nature of institutional structures.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study administered projective drawing tests and written assessments—including …

The Mmpi : A Subscale (Ic) For The Identification Of Male Incest Offenders, Mary S. Dolan Jan 1985

The Mmpi : A Subscale (Ic) For The Identification Of Male Incest Offenders, Mary S. Dolan

Dissertations and Theses

The MMPI has been used extensively for the clinical assessment of deviancy among sexual offenders. In order to derive a diagnostic scale for the specific identification of male incest offenders, an item analysis, using MMPI data from offenders, compared MMPI data from a nonoffending control sample. The item analysis results were cross validated with MMPI data from a separate sample of incest offenders. Eleven MMPI items were found to be critical in discriminating male incest offenders from nonoffenders, and these items comprise the Ic experimental scale. On the basis of the Ic scale, male incest offenders evidence characterological disturbances in …

Negative Behavior Exhibited By Preschool Children In Same-Age Versus Mixed-Age Groups, Laura Janine Sheppard Jan 1985

Negative Behavior Exhibited By Preschool Children In Same-Age Versus Mixed-Age Groups, Laura Janine Sheppard

Dissertations and Theses

Perhaps due to the increase in the workforce of mothers with young children, much attention has been directed in the past decade towards the subject of out-of-home child care.

In order to gain further understanding of the socialization of preschool children, an observational study was carried out which was designed to measure the amount of negative behavior expressed by children participating in mixed-age versus same-age preschool groups.

Scotopic And Photopic Thresholds : A Dependent Variable For The Mccollough Effect, Marilyn Murphy Jan 1985

Scotopic And Photopic Thresholds : A Dependent Variable For The Mccollough Effect, Marilyn Murphy

Dissertations and Theses

Previous attempts to adequately evaluate orientation-specific colored aftereffects (Mccollough Effects) have thus far been unsuccessful in yielding quantitative measures of relative strengths of the effects. Similarly, little success has been shown in previous attempts to establish what level of illumination is necessary in order to evoke the aftereffects. The present study sought to determine (a) whether threshold measurements could serve as adequate, quantitative dependent variables of the Mccollough Effects, (b) whether photopic illumination was necessary in order to evoke the aftereffect. It was predicted that the greater the number of inspection trials, the dimmer the illumination level could be in …

Effects Of Deprivation And Smoking On Smokers’ Performance And Mood During The Operation Of A Complex Computer Simulation, Gregory Howarth Cutler Jan 1985

Effects Of Deprivation And Smoking On Smokers’ Performance And Mood During The Operation Of A Complex Computer Simulation, Gregory Howarth Cutler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Past research has shown that smoking attenuates stress and reduces emotional behavior in smokers. Smoking also generally leads to the facilitation of performance on a variety of tasks. Deprivation of smoking has consistently produced performance and mood decrements. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effects of three hours of deprivation and smoking on performance and mood in smokers while operating a complex computer simulation. The following hypotheses were constructed: (a) Nondeprived smokers who smoke nicotine cigarettes will show superior subjective and objective performance, will rate the stimulation as less difficult and stressful, and will possess higher self-efficacy …

The Effects Of Prenatal Versus Postnatal Maternal Environment On Saline Intake By Crossbred Rats, Mary Elizabeth Deyo Jan 1985

The Effects Of Prenatal Versus Postnatal Maternal Environment On Saline Intake By Crossbred Rats, Mary Elizabeth Deyo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research has demonstrated strain differences in sodium intake as well as strain-dependent effects of early experience on the sodium intake of rats. The present study investigated the roles of prenatal and postnatal maternal environment in determining the sodium intake patterns of hybrid offspring resulting from the reciprocal crossing of two inbred rat strains known to differ in sodium consumption: TS3 (high intake) and I (low intake). Offspring of identical genetic makeup were first subjected to differing prenatal maternal environments (TS3 or I). At birth the crossbred pups were either cross-fostered to a host dam of the opposite strain or …

The Cult Of Empiricism In Psychology, And Beyond, Stephen Toulmin, David E. Leary Jan 1985

The Cult Of Empiricism In Psychology, And Beyond, Stephen Toulmin, David E. Leary

Psychology Faculty Publications

At some stage in it's development, any field of intellectual discussion or scientific speculation may reach a point at which it begins to generate large numbers of "empirical" questions, that is, questions whose answers must refer to carefully documented observations, or even to controlled experiments. In physics, this happened most strikingly in the course of the seventeenth century; in biology, the comparable stage was not reached until around 1770, rising to its peak in the course of the nineteenth century (Toulmin, 1972; Toulmin & Goodfield, 1962); whereas in psychology, it has become customary-though a trifle arbitrary-to argue that this happened …

Individual Differences In Lateralization Of Cognitive Processes: Type I And Type Ii Processors, Walter Berry Branch Jan 1985

Individual Differences In Lateralization Of Cognitive Processes: Type I And Type Ii Processors, Walter Berry Branch

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Recent research indicates that the two hemispheres of the human brain serve different functions when processing visual information. Specifically the left hemisphere, for most individuals, is specialized for an analytic or sequential type of processing and the right hemisphere is specialized for a holistic or gestalt type of processing. However this dichotomy is not always found, and it is hypothesized that individual subject differences may partially account for the somewhat inconsistent results in the research literature. The present study attempts to examine the effect of one individual difference dimension upon process lateralization . Subjects were classified into two types, Type …

Program Evaluation Of St. Mary's Hospice, Lyn M. Harper Jan 1985

Program Evaluation Of St. Mary's Hospice, Lyn M. Harper

Honors Theses

The purpose of this program evaluation was to identify the needs of families of terminally ill patients and their perceptions of their loved ones needs. Another objective was to determine if these needs were met in St. Mary's Hospice Program and who responded to these needs. Subjects consisted of ten randomly chosen family members, nine females and one male, ages forty to eighty, who had lost loved ones enrolled in the hospice program at least six months prior to the study. The subjects had not received volunteer bereavement care prior to the evaluation. Responses to need questionnaires and interviews indicated …

Effective Group Meetings And Decision Making, Donelson R. Forsyth Jan 1985

Effective Group Meetings And Decision Making, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

An extraordinary amount of work and many types of decisions are handled by groups of people, for in group meetings we can pool our knowledge and abilities, give each other feedback about our ideas, and tackle problems that would overcome us if we faced them alone. Group members not only give us emotional and social support when meeting together, but they can stimulate us to become more creative, more insightful, and more committed to our goals.

Not every group, however, realizes all these positive consequences. Often we dread going to "committee meetings," "council sessions," and "discussion groups" because they take …
