The article focuses on various studies related to the link between martial arts training and its various outcomes like aggressiveness. An inverse relationship between aggressiveness and length of martial arts training, was found by T. A. Nosanchuk of Carleton University. Another study found that problem teenagers changed after some months of practice in Tae Kwon Do. It is stated that the ability to defend one's self and physical fitness are two other benefits of martial arts.

The Handbook Of Clinic Practice, George A. Kelly, Thomas T. Jackson, Paul F. Zelhart, Robert P. Markley

Fort Hays Studies Series

The Handbook of Clinic Practice is a major surviving document that shows Dr. Kelly's early development as a clinician. The Handbook began as a guide for bachelor and master level students working in the Clinc. This was a major teaching tool for Dr. Kelly during his years at Fort Hays Kansas State College. It represents his early position regarding behavior in a clinical setting, and also provides a glimpse of the immense variety and scope of Dr. Kelly's talents.

Animal Pain, Bernard E. Rollin Jan 1985

Animal Pain, Bernard E. Rollin

Experimentation Collection

Some time ago, I received a telephone call from an eminent primatologist asking me to give the keynote address at a scientific seminar on animal pain. My first response was to express surprise that they were inviting a philosopher. His reply was remarkable, if only for its rarity among scientists: "The truly interesting and important issues concerning pain in animals are not scientific ones," he said. "They are moral, philosophical, and conceptual ones. And the total failure of science to engage or even acknowledge these issues discredits biomedical science and weakens its conceptual base." I hope to show you that …

Recognition And Alleviation Of Pain In Animals, P. A. Flecknell Jan 1985

Recognition And Alleviation Of Pain In Animals, P. A. Flecknell

Animal Welfare Collection

The pain and distress which animals experience as a consequence of their use by man figures prominently in discussions of animal welfare. Some improvements have been made in animal housing and husbandry practices and it is likely that further progress will be made in this field. In comparison, relatively little attention has been given to the problem of minimizing the pain and distress caused to animals by the various procedures to which they are subjected. The most publicized of these are the wide range of experimental techniques which are undertaken using laboratory animals, but also includes procedures such as castration …

Mammals, Birds, And Butterflies At Sodium Sources In Northern Ontario Forests, D. Fraser Jan 1985

Mammals, Birds, And Butterflies At Sodium Sources In Northern Ontario Forests, D. Fraser

Feeding Behavior Collection

Wildlife seen at natural sodium-rich springs and at roadside pools contaminated by highway de-icing salt in northern Ontario included two species of wild ungulates, one species of rodent, three species of birds, and two species of butterflies. The three birds were finches of the sub-family Carduelinae, noted for feeding almost exclusively on plant material. The mammalian species were also herbivorous. Apart from Porcupines (Erethizon dorsaturn), small mammals were rarely seen at the saltwater locations, perhaps because of their apparent preference to ingest salt in solid form rather than in water.

The Effect Of Calcium On Learned Helplessness And Associated Neurotransmitter Change, Kamyar Arasteh Jan 1985

The Effect Of Calcium On Learned Helplessness And Associated Neurotransmitter Change, Kamyar Arasteh

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Effects of elevated calcium on learned helplessness in rats was tested by maintaining animals on either distilled water or water containing 2.5 percent calcium. Animals that were maintained on drinking water containing high calcium showed elevated levels of brain and serum calcium. Rats that were on high calcium drinking water showed longer escape latencies than their non-calcium counterparts after they were pretreated with inescapable electric shocks. Lower levels of 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid associated with the state of "depression" were found in the forebrain and brainstem of these animals. Therefore, elevated levels of calcium enhance learned helplessness and decrease brain serotonin turnover. …

Occupational Identity Assessment Among Middle And Late Adolescents, Julian Melgosa Jan 1985

Occupational Identity Assessment Among Middle And Late Adolescents, Julian Melgosa

Dissertations

Problem. Research on James Marcia's identity statuses has been directed toward the overall problem of identity, but not toward the specific area of occupational identity. The major purpose of this study was to develop and validate an instrument to assess Marcia1s Identity Statuses (Achievement, Moratorium, Foreclosure, and Diffusion) for the occupational area. In addition, the relationships of selected variables to these statuses were investigated.

Method. Random class groups of students (N=417) from six selected high schools and colleges located in Michigan provided the data for this study. Items were created utilizing the criteria established by previous research and content validated …

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk Jan 1985

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …

Black White Differences On The K-Abc In An Appalachian Sample, Edward L. Winter Jan 1985

Black White Differences On The K-Abc In An Appalachian Sample, Edward L. Winter

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study investigated the effect of race on black and white Appalachian children's performance on the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) Global Scales. The Global Scale standard scores of 24 black (12 males and 12 females) and 24 white (12 males and 12 females) children between the ages of 6-0 and 12-6 were used. The white children were randomly selected to match the age, sex and family education levels of the black children. Multivariate analysis of variance results indicated that there were no overall race, sex, or Race x sex interaction effects on the pattern of scores of the …

Residence, Perceived Latitude Of Choice And Desired Control Among The Long-Livin, Steven R. Shank

Master's Theses

Perceived control, perceived choice, and residential setting are important factors which need to be addressed in research involving long-living. The focus of this study was to determine the relationships among thee variables. Effects Of Own Voice Vs. Another's Voice During Progressive Relaxation, Tay Corrie Weber Jan 1985

Effects Of Own Voice Vs. Another's Voice During Progressive Relaxation, Tay Corrie Weber

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess the difference in stress reduction between listening to one's own voice and listening to another's voice during taped relaxation procedures. Eighteen male undergraduates listened to relaxation tapes of their own voice, that of another person, and a control tape. Stress was measured via skin temperature. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant stress reduction (indicated by increased skin temperature) for both experimental groups and greater reduction in stress when listening to one's own voice than when listening to another voice. A Latin-Square Repeated analysis revealed only a significant order effect …
