Professional Females: Are There Enough Available? Gender Bias Of Female Victims, Debbie Leecock Jan 1998

Professional Females: Are There Enough Available? Gender Bias Of Female Victims, Debbie Leecock

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of this study was to determine whether females who are over or under the age of 35 years old would prefer to interact with professionals of the same gender throughout the interrogative, medical, and legal situations that they would be presented with after being victimized. A written victimization situation was prepared for each of the participants to react to for this study. No specific reference was made to the gender of the assailant or specific sexual violence that had occurred to the victim in the hypothetical crime situation that was presented to each participant in the two age …

Identifying Global Anatomical Differences: Deformation-Based Morphometry, J Ashburner, C Hutton, R Frackowiak, Ingrid Johnsrude, C Price, K Friston

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The aim of this paper is to illustrate a method for identifying macroscopic anatomical differences among the brains of different populations of subjects. The method involves spatially normalizing the structural MR images of a number of subjects so that they all conform to the same stereotactic space. Multivariate statistics are then applied to the parameters describing the estimated nonlinear deformations that ensue. To illustrate the method, we compared the gross morphometry of male and female subjects. We also assessed brain asymmetry, the effect of handedness, and interactions among these effects.

Beliefs About Consciousness And Reality Of Participants At ‘Tucson Ii’, Imants Barušs, Robert J. Moore Jan 1998

Beliefs About Consciousness And Reality Of Participants At ‘Tucson Ii’, Imants Barušs, Robert J. Moore

Psychology

In previous studies we had found correlations between the material-transcendent dimension underlying the Western intellectual tradition and the diversity of ideas concerning consciousness. In the course of our work we developed the Beliefs About Consciousness and Reality Questionnaire that could be used for measuring fundamental beliefs about consciousness and reality. A survey of participants at the scientific meeting Toward a Science of Consciousness 1996 “Tucson II” was conducted using this questionnaire. Results from 212 respondents indicated scores substantially in the transcendent direction, both for scales underlying the questionnaire as well as for some of its individual items, relative to a …

Psychologists Collaborating With Clergy, Mark R. Mcminn, Laura C. Edwards, Brian R. K. Lim, Clark D. Campbell

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

If a patient adheres to religious values and practices, should the treating psychologist get input from a clergyperson? How frequent is clergy-psychologist collaboration? What obstacles impede such collaboration? An exploratory survey questionnaire was sent to 200 clergy, 200 psychologists interested in religious issues, and 200 psychologists selected without regard to religious interests or values. Four themes were assessed: types of collaborative activities, frequency of collaboration, obstacles to collaboration, and ways to enhance collaboration. Strategies for promoting clergy-psychologist collaboration include challenging unidirectional referral assumptions, building trust through proximity and familiarity, and considering the importance of shared values and beliefs.

Perceiving And Feeling Personal Discrimination: Motivation Or Inhibition For Collective Action?, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson Jan 1998

Perceiving And Feeling Personal Discrimination: Motivation Or Inhibition For Collective Action?, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson

Psychology Faculty Publications

Relative deprivation and group consciousness theories differ in their predictions of how personal discrimination and personal discontent will be related to taking collective action. According to relative deprivation theory, assessments of personal status should be unrelated to taking collective action.

In contrast, group consciousness theories suggest that while perceiving personal discrimination is necessary for collective action to occur, feelings of personal discontent may inhibit it. Female students completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of, and affective responses to personal discrimination, as well as their participation in collective actions. A hierarchical regression analysis found that personal discrimination and discontent interacted such that …

Advice To Authors: From The File Cabinet To The Journal Pages, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1998

Advice To Authors: From The File Cabinet To The Journal Pages, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Several suggestions are given for those considering authoring a journal article. These suggestions include timely submission of manuscripts, having a peer review the manuscript before submitting it to a journal, and selecting a journal that fits the style and content of the manuscript. Though authors of journal article must be resilient and capable of handling rejection letters, those who persevere often make significant contributions to Christian scholarship.

Phonetic Skills And Vocabulary Size In Late Talkers: Concurrent And Predictive Relationships, Jennifer Mirak, Leslie Rescorla Jan 1998

Phonetic Skills And Vocabulary Size In Late Talkers: Concurrent And Predictive Relationships, Jennifer Mirak, Leslie Rescorla

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Phonetic skills and vocabulary size were investigated in 37 toddlers (24 to 31 months) identified with specific expressive language impairment and 20 comparison toddlers matched on age, SES, and nonverbal ability. The use of consonants was highly consistent across two contexts: 20 minutes of structured testing and 5 minutes of free play. The comparison children produced almost triple the number of consonant types and five times as many consonant tokens as the late talkers. However, the most frequently present consonants were similar across groups, indicating delayed rather than deviant phonetic development in the late talkers. The late talkers used a …

Communicative Intent In Late-Talking Toddlers, Leslie Rescorla, Lisa Merrin Jan 1998

Communicative Intent In Late-Talking Toddlers, Leslie Rescorla, Lisa Merrin

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This research investigated communicative intent in 31 toddlers who were slow to talk and 32 normally developing toddlers matched on SES, age, and nonverbal cognitive ability. Communicative intent was studied during free play, both with the mother and with an unfamiliar examiner. Late talkers had lower rates of communication, initiation, and joint attention, but when total communicativeness was controlled for, they were just as likely to initiate, respond, and maintain joint attention as were their peers. As expected, the late talkers relied more on nonword vocalization, gestures, and gesture/oral combinations than their normally developing peers. Children in both groups initiated …

Citation Analysis As An Unobtrusive Method For Journal Collection Evaluation Using Psychology Student Research Bibliographies, Margaret Sylvia

Faculty Publications

Bibliographic citation analysis of student research papers is one method of evaluation the use of a journal collection. Journal selection and cancellation may be done on the basis of use and cost-effectiveness to maximize the usefulness of materials purchased with the library budget. An analysis of the bibliographic citations of research papers by undergraduate and graduate students in the psychology department of St. Mary's University was used as one basis for psychology journal selection and deselection in the academic library. Findings confirmed that the most cost-effective and the most used materials were usually held by the library. Titles that met …

Experiencing Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Prevalence And Correlates, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker Jan 1998

Experiencing Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Prevalence And Correlates, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Violence during pregnancy directly impacts the mental and physical health of pregnant women. We assessed the prevalence and correlates of physical violence around the time of pregnancy in a representative sample of 6,718 women in South Carolina. Physical violence, defined as "being physically hurt by husband or partner" or "being involved in a physical fight" was reported by 10.9% of recently pregnant women. These were correlates of violence: experiencing increased numbers of stressful life events, being unmarried, having increased parity, being on Medicaid, and having an unwanted pregnancy. Screening to identify violence in pregnancy in health care settings is vital …

Unanimity As A Rule For Group Consensus: A Review Of The Theoretical And Experimental Literature On The Use Of Unanimity In Group Decision Making, Kevin C. Rumison

Modern Psychological Studies

This literature review examines the use of unanimity as a rule for reaching group concensus in decision making The review contains a brief overview of group decision making and of the processes involved in reaching unanimous decision rule on various group processes and the positive and negative aspects of using this method to reach decisions. From the experimental literature, it appears that unanimous decision vile increases group cohesiveness and commitment to the decision, but at a loss of decision quality: Therefore, the group priorities should be taken into account when considering unanimity as a decision rule.

The Effect Of Freedom Of Choice On Cognitive Performance, Stephanie Cole, Mali Sengchannavong Jan 1998

The Effect Of Freedom Of Choice On Cognitive Performance, Stephanie Cole, Mali Sengchannavong

Modern Psychological Studies

The relationship between perceived control and academic performance has been addressed 1.17 a lave body of correlational research; however the effect of an internal orientation (i.e. a choice between academic tasks) on cognitive performance has not received as much attention. This study tested the hypothesis that college students' perception of control created by the belief that a choice exists between academic tasks increases cognitive performance. Participants consisted of 48 male and female college students from introduction to psychology classes and an analogy test was used to measure cognitive performance. The experimental group was made up of students who believed that …
