The Influence Of Open And Closed Attitudes On The Reception Of Scientific Evidence Of Genetic Predisposition To Homosexuality, Stephen Jeffers

Theses Digitization Project

The study examined attitudes toward homosexuals from a neo-functional perspective, including a proposal that these attitudes are primarily 'open' and informationally based, or primarily 'closed' and affectively based. Scientific evidence of a genetic predisposition to homosexuality should be differentially received, based on the attitudes of the recipients of the information.

Event-Related Potentials And Serial Position Effects In A Visual Probe Recognition Task, Stephen Crites, James Devine, Dora Lozano, Selene Moreno

Selected Works Temporary Series

In two experiments, we explored the utility of using event-related brain potentials (ERPs) evoked during picture recognition to examine the cognitive and neural processes underlying primacy and recency effects. Each experiment consisted of 210 trials in which a recognition probe followed a 12-picture sequence (105 match and 105 nonmatch trials). The 105 match-probe trials consisted of 35 trials in which the probe matched a prime memory set item (Positions 1–3), 35 in which the probe matched a middle memory set item (Positions 6–8), and 35 in which the probe matched a recent memory set item (Positions 10–12). Behavioral results revealed …

Differences In Body Dissatisfication In Traditional College-Aged Men And Women, Joseph R. Cahoe Jan 1998

Differences In Body Dissatisfication In Traditional College-Aged Men And Women, Joseph R. Cahoe

Modern Psychological Studies

Findings from recent studies of body image have suggested that women are more dissatisfied with their body shapes than men. Participants' levels of body dissatisfaction were evaluated using a subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory (Gamer, Olmstead, Polivy 1983 Results of an independent-groups t-test revealed a significant effect t(49) = 4.39, p < .05 Specifically scores on body dissatisfaction were much higher for women (M = 12.13) than for men (M = 3.87) indicating that women do have higher rates of body dissatisfaction than men in a traditional college-aged population. Suggestions for future research include studying whether actual body shape and size has an impact on body dissatisfaction.

Attributional Perceptions Of Dating Outcomes, Peter D. Ormsby, Thomas D. Green Jan 1998

Attributional Perceptions Of Dating Outcomes, Peter D. Ormsby, Thomas D. Green

Modern Psychological Studies

Attributional responses made by undergraduate college students to interpersonal relationship outcomes were investigated to determine if the actor-observer effect exists in a similar manner for successful and unsuccessful dating situations, or if the effect is mediated by an egoserving bias tendency. Participants rated the influence of the Weinerian Factors of ability, effort, luck and task difficulty on successful and unsuccessful dating outcomes in terms of Self, an Other Male, or an Other Female. Participants attributed a significantly greater amount of internal responsibility to the others as compared to self for unsuccessful dating outcomes but not for successful outcomes. Additionally, participants, …

‘Pleasures’, ‘Pains’ And Animal Welfare: Toward A Natural History Of Affect, D. Fraser, I. J.H. Duncan Jan 1998

‘Pleasures’, ‘Pains’ And Animal Welfare: Toward A Natural History Of Affect, D. Fraser, I. J.H. Duncan

Animal Welfare Collection

In hedonic theories of motivation, 'motivational affective states' (MASs) are typically seen as adaptations which motivate certain types of behaviour, especially in situations where a flexible or learned response is more adaptive than a rigid or reflexive one. MASs can be negative (eg unpleasant feelings of hunger or pain) or positive (eg pleasant feelings associated with eating and playing). Hedonic theories often portray negative and positive MASs as opposite ends of a one-dimensional scale.

We suggest that natural selection has favoured negative and positive affect as separate processes to solve two different types of motivational problems. We propose that negative …

Translocation Effects On The Behavior Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Ludovicianus), John P. Farrar, Karin L. Coleman, Marc Bekoff, Eric Stone Jan 1998

Translocation Effects On The Behavior Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Ludovicianus), John P. Farrar, Karin L. Coleman, Marc Bekoff, Eric Stone

Ethology Collection

We examined the effects of translocation on Black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) anti-predator behavior by recording response distances and response times to a human intruder in three colonies containing native, translocated, and combined native and translocated prairie dogs. The translocated prairie dogs barked alarms and concealed themselves at significantly greater intruder distances than mixed or native colonies. However, individuals in different colonies did not differ in the time taken to return to a burrow, to conceal themselves after a human approached the colony, or in the time elapsed after concealment until an animal reappeared. Translocated prairie dogs exhibited nearly twice …

Why It Is Important To Understand Animal Behavior, Joy Mench Jan 1998

Why It Is Important To Understand Animal Behavior, Joy Mench

Anthropomorphism and Anthropocentrism Collection

Although people have long been fascinated by the behavior of animals, the formal discipline of animal behavior--ethology--is actually relatively new, dating to the work of Konrad Lorenz in Austria in the 1930s. Application of ethological principles and methods to the study of animal welfare is an even newer endeavor, of course, and one that has generated a great deal of stimulating discussion and controversy during its short history. In this paper, I provide an overview of the development of behavioral approaches to the study of animal welfare. I then discuss some reasons that behaviors are important to animals and describe …

Dual Adaptation And Adaptive Generalization Of The Human Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex, Robert B. Welch, Bruce Bridgeman, Jason A. Williams, Regina Semmler Jan 1998

Dual Adaptation And Adaptive Generalization Of The Human Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex, Robert B. Welch, Bruce Bridgeman, Jason A. Williams, Regina Semmler

Psychology and Child Development

In two experiments, we examined the possibility that the human vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is subject to dual adaptation (the ability to adapt to a sensory rearrangement more rapidly and/or more completely after repeated experience with it) and adaptive generalization (the ability to adapt more readily to a novel sensory rearrangement as a result of prior dual adaptation training). In Experiment 1, the subjects actively turned the head during alternating exposure to a visual-vestibular rearrangement (target/head gain = 0.5) and the normal situation (target/head gain = 0.0). These conditions produced both adaptation and dual adaptation of the VOR but no evidence …

A Study Of Physical Appearance And Level Of Attraction To The Opposite Sex, Sherynn J. Perry Jan 1998

A Study Of Physical Appearance And Level Of Attraction To The Opposite Sex, Sherynn J. Perry

Modern Psychological Studies

This experiment examined the effects of physical appearance on level of attraction between people of the opposite sex. Level of attraction was measured using a questionnaire that included a picture of an attractive or unattractive stimulus person. The participants consisted of 57 university undergraduate students. They viewed the stimulus person, and then answered questions based on their attraction to and on how willing they would be to participate in various activities with that person. The results of the Independent Samples Nonequivalent Control Groups Design indicated significance between level of attraction and physical appearance in mate selection; therefore, in this study, …

Personality Characteristics Which Predispose Potentially Self-Destructive Behaviors, Ann F. Schumacher Jan 1998

Personality Characteristics Which Predispose Potentially Self-Destructive Behaviors, Ann F. Schumacher

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In the college setting, many adolescents choose to engage in potentially self-destructive behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and body piercing, despite the associated risks. It is hypothesized that the tendency to participate in these behaviors is correlated with personality characteristics. Personality tests measuring sensation seeking, locus of control, and impulsiveness, along with three scales measuring the tendency to participate in three self-destructive behaviors: smoking, drinking, and body decoration, were administered to 102 college-aged students. Results showed that most of the self-destructive behaviors were negatively correlated with subscales of the sensation seeking measure. One possible explanation of these results would be …
