As business professors become more immersed in global strategies, knowledge of foreign cultures and stereotypes will help further thinking and debate. This article explores the impact of culture on the process of adapting to living in a foreign country and teaching business principles in a Muslim society. Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov

In this article, the author argues that despite important differences between Critical Management Studies (CMS) and Organization Development (OD), there is enough common ground to make a dialogue worthwhile for both fields and for management practice. The author outlines some major "objectives" of each field, noting some important but frequently overlooked similarities and complementarities between them. Power and empowerment are offered as examples of focal topics around which the two disciplines could have a productive discussion, suggesting that such an exchange would help CMS’ important insights about power to have more of an impact on organizational practice while enhancing OD's …

Backwoods Brewing Company: Learning To Tolerate Ambiguity, Elizabeth Mccrea, Elizabeth A. Cooper, Kristin Backhaus

Backwoods Brewing Company is an experiential exercise that provides a challenging, reality based business situation, requiring students to create a conclusion based on limited information. It is designed primarily for upper-division management students. A tolerance for ambiguity scale is administered, the debriefing of the exercise helps students develop a better understanding of their tolerance for ambiguity and teaches them some concrete tools to be used when dealing with ambiguity.

Spirituality: A Way To Alternate Subjectivity?, Mihaela Kelemen, Tuomo Peltonen

Organization Management Journal

This paper emphasizes the contribution of Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot to discussions of workplace spirituality. It is argued that their understanding of spirituality differs significantly from the mainstream management contributions: they view spirituality as a distinct form of post-modern subjectivity in organizations and regard the subject as continuous flow emerging and being constructed not so much at the crossroad of institutions and macro-structures but from within, with the help of self-formation practices. We term the latter spirituality and argue, firstly, that there are strong (albeit controversial) connections between spiritual practices, the history of Christianity, and the philosophy of antiquity. …

The 911 Public Safety Communications Specialist, operator, call taker, dispatcher, or whatever title these behind-the-scenes professionals operate under, they are indeed, the first public safety responder. Whether it is for police protection during criminal activity, fire extinguishment to save a burning house and rescue the victims, or paramedic treatment to remediate a life-threatening medical incident, the first contact the vast majority of these callers will have is with the 911 System.
