Library As Place: Fostering The Christian Traditions Of Scholarship, Silence, And Hospitality, Lyndi Fabbrini

Librarian Publications and Presentations

Academic libraries have changed and evolved, yet they remain a staple of academic life, supporting students by providing them with the space and materials they need to succeed in their courses. Beyond housing physical collections, library space holds a special significance and fulfills a vital need in the community to which it belongs. In studying Library as Place, three qualities of libraries emerge that are also deeply rooted in the Christian tradition: scholarship, silence, and hospitality. An exploration of these traditions demonstrates how libraries provide spaces for these practices to flourish.

Quiet Service: Serving God And Others From Behind The Scenes, Amy Reinhold

Librarian Publications and Presentations

One of the tenants of the Christian faith is service to God and others. Serving others is typically a front-facing activity, but not always. This paper describes the nature of service, how academic libraries in general serve their patrons, and focuses on how behind-the-scenes activities in the Technical Services department serve patrons in impactful ways. By focusing on the needs of others and serving them well, one can bring honor and glory to God.

A Conceptual Analysis Of Collaboration In Information Literacy Librarianship, Amy J. Andres, Tatiana Usova Jan 2024

A Conceptual Analysis Of Collaboration In Information Literacy Librarianship, Amy J. Andres, Tatiana Usova

VCUarts Qatar Faculty Research

Collaboration is a widely used term in academic libraries to describe different types of interaction with campus partners. The library literature presents an extensive history of publications that feature academic library collaboration with discipline faculty in the context of teaching. While the outcomes of teaching librarians' collaborative practices are well documented, the lack of clarity in distinguishing collaboration from other forms of workplace interaction has impeded a comprehensive understanding of teaching librarians' experiences. To improve the understanding of librarians' collaborative practices, and to build a foundation on which further research can be generated, a Pragmatic Utility concept analysis is conducted …

Covering 50 works published between 2002 and 2023 in the areas of general inclusion, public libraries, academic libraries, experiences of library workers, archives, information behavior, and cataloging, we found that, with the exception of works on archives and cataloging, little scholarly literature goes beyond introductory talking points on basic information about trans and gender diverse people. We conclude with a call for much more in-depth research on this essential …

Not All Staying Is The Same: Unpacking Retention And Turnover In Academic Libraries, Samantha Guss, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham Jan 2024

Not All Staying Is The Same: Unpacking Retention And Turnover In Academic Libraries, Samantha Guss, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Although the academic libraries profession recognizes that retention is a complex and important issue, especially for advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and supporting BIPOC librarians, the library literature largely avoids defining or providing a measurement for retention at all. In this paper we propose an original nuanced definition of retention. We draw from existing research on workplace dynamics and library culture and our qualitative exploration of academic librarians who have left jobs before they intended. Our research investigated what it was like for them to stay at those jobs after they realized they didn’t want to stay long-term. …

Beyond The Stacks: The Modern Evolution Of Law Libraries, James Wier Jan 2024

Beyond The Stacks: The Modern Evolution Of Law Libraries, James Wier

About the Buildings

There is a certain timelessness to the sensory experience of the Reading Room: the scratching and shuffling of paperwork, the muffled thump of a closing book, the dull hum of fans in the warmer months. But in recent years, something decidedly more modern has joined in the chorus: the quiet staccato of laptop keyboards.

The emergence of computers and the internet has reshaped nearly every aspect of how libraries operate. At the same time, trends in legal education and the profession have led to changes in collections management, research-based curriculum, scholarship, the student experience, and other aspects of how law …

Teaching There...And Back Again: Building A Practice Of Reflective Teaching, Amanda Crego-Emley, Alicia G. Vaandering, Chris Cassaday

Public Services Faculty Presentations

How do you move forward to improve your teaching approaches and pedagogical decisions over time? Research has shown that reflective teaching provides instructors with opportunities to examine their classroom teaching, learning objects, and assessment. This reflection can inspire strategic new approaches, guide changes that improve student learning, and promote a holistic evaluation of instructional practice. For academic library instructors, dedicating time to reflective work can be challenging, but participating in this work as part of an iterative practice, either independently or within a community, can improve accountability, strengthen departmental collaboration, and foster exciting new ideas.

In this session, a team …

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff Jan 2024

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff

Foley Library Scholarship

Though the ACRL Framework holds metacognition as crucial to exercising information literacy, its emphasis was reduced from prominence in early drafts to a single mention in the final document. At the same time, few of the frequently-taught sets of source evaluation criteria include a step for self-awareness. This raises the question: do librarians explicitly teach metacognitive concepts when they teach source evaluation? Online library guides about source evaluation from various colleges and universities in Washington state were analyzed, and librarians who taught source evaluation were surveyed to determine whether and to what extent metacognitive concepts were included as part of …

Place Matters: The Role Of Public Libraries As Change Agents In Central Appalachia, Jasmyne R. Lewis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The role of public libraries is changing in response to a multitude of influences and trends. The exponential growth of technology as the primary method of information access, funding challenges, changing demographics, and other mitigating factors have forced public libraries to become more than book repositories. Community library leaders and governing board members are faced with challenges such as decreased funding, community division regarding library services, and soaring costs for library materials and services, as they develop and adopt policies and practices to navigate this ever-changing environment.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to collect data from the public …
