As academic librarians become aware of the challenges expensive textbooks pose to student success, they increasingly collaborate to provide zero-cost access to required course materials. Librarians at Illinois State University initiated a program to license e-books assigned in courses, surveying students and faculty in participating courses regarding their perspectives on textbook affordability and their experiences with the provided e-books. Student participants reported overwhelmingly positive responses and identified several ways in which the e-books enhanced their experience in the course. The findings suggest that providing assigned materials as e-books contributes to students’ engagement as learners and their academic success within courses.

Academic Library Workers in Conversation is a C&RL News series focused on elevating the everyday conversations of library professionals. The wisdom of the watercooler has long been heralded, but this series hopes to go further by minimizing barriers to traditional publishing with an accessible format. Each of the topics in the series were proposed by the authors and they were given space to explore. This issue’s conversation revolves around parenting and how academic libraries must do more. The insights from the authors apply beyond parenting and are a great reminder that people make our academic libraries work.— Dustin Fife, series …

Assessment Of Information Literacy Skills And Opac Usage By Students: A Study Of Law Undergraduates In Osun State, Nigeria, Faith Modupe Akinola
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In Nigeria, many public and private university libraries have deployed the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) as a retrieval tool to improve services for user satisfaction. The study, therefore, investigated the assessment of students' information literacy skills and OPAC usage: a study of law undergraduates in Osun state, Nigeria.
The population comprised 1,374 law undergraduate students from one public university and four private universities in Osun State in Nigeria, and a two-stage sampling technique was used to select a sample of 326 for the study. A validated structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analysed using frequency, percentage, …

A Building Block Of Empathy: Establishing A Graphic Medicine Collection In An Academic Health Sciences Library., Jess King, Alison Bobal
Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
To help address the well-being of the campus and contribute to empathy building amongst students pursuing careers as healthcare providers, an academic health sciences library built a graphic novel collection focused on comics that discuss medical conditions and health-related topics. The collection contains the experiences of patients, providers, and caregivers. The reader-friendly format of graphic novels provides an easy entry point for discussing empathy with health professions faculty and students. The collection has been used in the classroom during library instruction sessions, with the idea of integrating it within the curriculum.

Digital Preservation Practices In Federal University Libraries In Southwestern Nigeria, Oladapo James Omoju Mr, Funmilola Olubunmi Omotayo Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources by providing a tremendous amount of information with a variety of digital tools. The study focused on digital preservation practices in federal university libraries in Southwestern Nigeria. A survey design of the qualitative type was adopted. All federal university libraries in the region were sampled. Data was collected through interviews conducted with the heads of the Digital Preservation Units or their representatives. Data were analysed thematically. All the universities have adopted digital preservation. The libraries preserve born-digital resources, research …

Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
University of Dayton Libraries added Shibboleth as an additional form of authentication for its licensed e-resources beginning in summer 2023. A major impetus for pursuing Shibboleth are the upcoming web browser changes that will obfuscate users’ IP addresses, set to occur in later 2023 and 2024 and something which will likely disrupt on-campus IP range access via EZproxy. Implementation of Shibboleth for an initial round of fifty-five e-resource platforms was relatively quick as a result of the University of Dayton’s participation in the InCommon Federation of U.S. higher education institutions, also known as an “authentication federation.” Methods for achieving the …

Through The Lens Of Time: Capturing The Ephemeral Magic Of The Circus, Rebecca Fitzsimmons
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Images in the Charles Clarke Circus Photographs Collection document the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the 1920s. Clarke, a leaper in the world-renowned aerial act, The Clarkonians, would have been in a relatively unique position to capture views of the circus from the vantage point of an insider. The resulting images carry the weight of that perspective. The photographs document important aspects of the circus, showing performers like Lillian Leitzel and May Wirth, spectacle wardrobe, practices and performances in the ring, and quieter moments behind the big top.

Open Science (OS) seeks to apply the concept of openness across all stages of research practice. It aims to facilitate the dissemination of research at speed and to foster collaboration between researchers (Foster Open Science, 2023). OS is an essential aspect of Responsible Research Practice (ALLEA, 2017) and integral to addressing the complex problems facing the world (UNESCO, 2021). It is thus imperative that research performing organisations provide effective OS training. Anecdotal evidence gleaned over five years of OS Training provision suggests that researchers have less understanding of foundational research practices than library OS instructors anticipate. This further suggests that …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The primary objective of this article is to promote faculty research excellence and visibility in Nigerian universities through open access publishing. The article begins by briefly discussing the vital role that universities play in research, which is a fundamental duty of faculty members. The study provides a succinct definition of research excellence and visibility, as well as the methods for assessing research excellence. This leads to a brief discussion on promoting faculty research visibility through publication on open access platforms such as open access journals and open access institutional repositories to increase citations rates and enhance visibility. Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The most important aspect of any library is its patrons. Any library’s goal is to determine what its users need, meet those needs, and satisfy them to the best of its ability. When it comes to public libraries, they face greater challenges in meeting the requirements of their increasingly diverse readership. The present study is an attempt to analyze the awareness and usage of the information sources and services offered by the D.V.G. public library, Kolar. A well-structured questionnaire was distributed to draw the data from the users. Responses from the users show that 95% of respondents are aware of …
