Inclusive Description Recommendations Of The Cooperative Metadata Team, University Of South Carolina Libraries Cooperative Metadata Team

University Libraries Policies and Reports

The University of South Carolina strives to “foster access and belonging” (University of South Carolina Strategic Priories, 2023/28), and the University Libraries endeavors to be “respectful and accessible” and “responsive to changes in user needs” by investing in initiatives that “promote inclusion for and within our community” (University of South Carolina Libraries Strategic Plan, 2022/24). The USC Libraries Cooperative Metadata Team (CoMeT) seeks to support these goals by providing guidelines for creating inclusive metadata and remediating existing records. These guidelines will allow for more efficient, timely, and thoughtful processing of materials.

Scalable Competitive Intelligence Education Through Micro-Learning And Micro-Credentials, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Dave Zwicky, Frederick Berry Apr 2024

Scalable Competitive Intelligence Education Through Micro-Learning And Micro-Credentials, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Dave Zwicky, Frederick Berry

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

It is essential for students, both inside and outside the business school, to learn business information literacy skills to make evidence-based decisions. To address this need, faculty from a large public university developed a competitive intelligence digital module using micro-learning and micro-credentialing concepts designed to be scalable for use in many disciplinary areas. During the pilot, students in a first-year Management course and a senior capstone Engineering Technology course were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the content’s utility and usability. This paper presents the results of this survey to determine student perceptions and if there are any disciplinary differences.

Making Sense Of Work Engagement: A Qualitative Inquiry With Pakistani Librarians, Asif Altaf Mr, Mohamad Noorman Masrek Dr., Haslinda Husaini Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Work engagement is the most potent predictor of individual and organizational success. However, researchers have made no significant effort regarding this crucial issue of librarian work engagement in Pakistan. Therefore, the present study explores work engagement among Pakistani librarians and its impact on their job performance. The qualitative research involved interviewing five professional librarians aged between 30 and 45 years with professional experience of five years and above. The thematic nature of the interviews was conducted online with the main aim of understanding factors that affect work engagement. The findings revealed multiple work engagement determinants, notably influencing job performance.

A Visual Workflow For Cataloging, Arden Kirkland, Minor Gordon Apr 2024

A Visual Workflow For Cataloging, Arden Kirkland, Minor Gordon

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Our digital collections team took on the challenge to improve the tools and processes of cataloging. We began to explore how we could build features that helped students into a cataloging worksheet tool, under development at DressDiscover.org. After our initial development of the tool, we looked back and realized just how much Universal Design for Learning (UDL) had influenced our design, although we had not consciously intended that from the start. Our assessment of the project through a UDL lens was at first extremely affirming, helping us to note many ways that our work already supported all three of …

High Tech High: Computing In Our Early Days, Christian D. Nøkkentved, Ralph Flickinger

Archives Exhibits

In 1986, when IMSA first opened its doors to students, Plato, NovaNET, MacIntosh Plus and the Dat. Lab, even track paper all played an essential role in connecting IMSA to the emerging digital world. IMSA’s library, for example, boasted digital technology on par with the Ivy League university libraries. Like the rest of the world, IMSA has continued to expand and update its use of digital technologies, and as we move towards AI, this exhibit celebrates computing in our early days.

Promoting Nutrition Literacy In Children: A Case Study Of A Community Partnership Between A University And An Elementary School, Candise Branum Apr 2024

Promoting Nutrition Literacy In Children: A Case Study Of A Community Partnership Between A University And An Elementary School, Candise Branum

Foley Library Scholarship

Background: Health literacy outreach is commonplace within public and hospital libraries but less so in academic libraries, where it is often viewed as not integral. Academic health science libraries may collaborate with public libraries to provide public health information literacy programming or “train the trainer” sessions, but examples of academic health science librarians leading community health initiatives are still limited.

Case Presentation: This case report discusses a collaborative project between Gonzaga’s Foley Center Library, the School of Nursing and Human Physiology, and a local elementary school to promote health literacy for students and their families, led by an Academic Health …

The Anchor: 2024

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Health And Healthcare: Designing For The Social Determinants Of Health And Blue Zones In North Nashville, Rebecca Tonguis, Honor Thomas, Olivia Hobbs

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Owned by North Nashville’s First Community Church, a now empty site in the Osage-North Fisk neighborhood of North Nashville has been identified as a potential site for a new location of The Store, in addition to a community-centric architectural development based on the social determinants of health and informed by the principles behind Blue Zones, the locations with the highest lifespans in the world. Opened by Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, The Store is a free grocery store that “allow[s] people to shop for their basic needs in a way that protects dignity and fosters hope”, for which North Nashville …

Alternative Vocabularies: What To Do When Lcsh Isn't Enough, Sasha Frizzell Apr 2024

Alternative Vocabularies: What To Do When Lcsh Isn't Enough, Sasha Frizzell

Library Scholarship

Catalogers in the United States primarily use Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) to describe the resources in their libraries, but sometimes, there isn't an LCSH term that is the right fit. Sometimes, terms are too broad or too narrow; occasionally, terms are simply outdated, and unfortunately, some are pejorative. When that happens, it's time to introduce an alternative vocabulary into the cataloging workflow. This presentation will introduce four alternative subject heading vocabularies: Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms, Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus, Rare Books and Manuscripts Controlled Vocabulary, and Homosaurus. Each vocabulary will be presented with a broad …

Great Lengths: A Review Of Website Preservation Activities At Three American Universities With Digital Humanities Centers, Drew E. Vandecreek

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Sustaining grant funded digital humanities websites has become a major challenge in the field. Three American universities with digital humanities centers kept eight of nine websites funded by the United States National Endowment for the Humanities (1996–2003) online to 2022. Center personnel made website preservation a part of everyday operations without additional funds devoted to the task. Web software developed rapidly in this period, however and center staff members’ efforts often did not succeed in providing necessary updates. Funded materials became increasingly obsolete. The extent of center personnel’s efforts, compared with their results, suggests that their approach itself will in …
