Both librarians and student employees staff our virtual reference service, so ensuring consistent and quality chat transactions is important. Sample transcripts from fall 2014 were evaluated, and a fall 2015 follow-up analysis reviewed service improvement efforts. In 2012, ACRL published Diversity Standards: Cultural Competency for Academic Libraries to guide academic libraries to better serve diverse populations. How do academic library diversity plans incorporate these ACRL standards? What standards are underrepresented? This poster will show intersections between diversity plans collected from U.S. academic libraries and the standards through content analysis. Those engaged in diversity efforts will learn how to integrate these standards into their own plans to ensure inclusive learning environments.

Every library has a distinctive organizational culture with norms, values, rules, beliefs, and basic assumptions that have developed over time and are shared by the people who make up the organization. This culture shapes the perceptions and assumptions of the library’s personnel. A healthy culture can evoke a passion for the work, a loyalty and commitment to the organization’s mission, and a deep-seated belief in the organization’s value.

Libraries with a healthy culture are resilient, responsive, and inclusive. The health of an organization is the responsibility of every member, not just the formal leadership.

Instruction librarians and an academic department formed a community of practice and developed a three-day research “boot camp” for graduate research assistants. With a mandate to integrate services, the library was particularly interested in learning how the writing center addressed the evaluation, integration and attribution of sources, tasks similar to the work of reference librarians. Many academic libraries have participated in the growing trend in creating unified service desks, where users visit one desk to get help from a variety of library and other campus services. The University of Dayton’s Roesch Library, however, is exploring a different model. It is piloting a service that lends itself to true integration with external departments. Although unified service desks offer the convenience of one-stop assistance, the various units may still act as silos. Service integration facilitates better cross-training and less confusion for students who may need multiple forms of help in one common area.

Like many academic libraries, the University of Dayton’s Roesch Library houses a writing center. The academic library can play a crucial role in experiential learning, particularly through student internships. This library is one of the larger units on campus to employ student workers and we spend many hours training them to handle questions at service desks, assist with cataloging functions, help digitize materials, and a variety of other tasks. In 2011, we built on that idea of student workers and partnered with the University Honors Program to offer customized experiential learning through paid internships. Learn how one library uses concept maps to conduct both quick and in-depth assessments of student learning. This technique evolved into a more formal assessment with pre- and post-testing for both one-shot instruction sessions and semester-long research classes. After transcribing the concepts to spreadsheets, librarians standardize the terms and map them to ACRL Information Literacy Standards for more rigorous analysis and assessment. Libraries can use Foursquare to reward frequent visitors. Using mobile phones to check in, visitors use Foursquare to share their locations with friends as well as unlock special offers available at a location. Frequent visitors can become "mayors," thanks to algorithms, and locations can reward their mayors as they see fit. Our student government association suggested a semester-long contest for the chance to win a highly-coveted individual study room in the library during finals week. The library answered this request and hosted the contest with Foursquare. After launching the "V.I.P. Room" deal, check-ins at the library on Foursquare increased 992%. …

Get an uncensored look at what people are saying about your library and provide responsive service using Twitter. For two years, tweets about and to a library Twitter account have been responded to, saved, and analyzed, revealing attitudes towards the library that were previously unknown. Once the library Twitter account began responding to tweets, the tweets about the library increased as did the number of the account followers (up 500%). The presenters all handle social media for their libraries, but in very different settings: a large academic library at a public-private research institution, a medium-sized academic library at a private university, and a medium-sized public library in a town that revolves around a university. The workshop will provide some general discussion about how the different technology environments elicit different responses from various user groups and, using Twitter as a microcosm, the similarities and differences between approaches will be discussed. Cross-unit collaboration and curriculum integration became a reality when librarians were approached by academic departments to teach a course about conducting discipline-specific research skills. At this university students are required to demonstrate general and discipline-specific information literacy competencies, which are determined by the departments and programs, not by the library; in reality most of the departments and programs adopt the general information literacy competencies for both sets of competencies.

In addition to published materials, academic libraries often curate special collections. Some of these collections contain three‐dimensional objects like statues, sports memorabilia, art, and cultural objects. This poster session will demonstrate how one library has used 360 degree digital imaging to provide access to such objects, including the equipment and process used to generate animated flash files, and ways to assess user satisfaction. During times of tight resources, cultivating the emotional intelligence (EI) of employees at all levels, in all areas of the library, can be a way to maintain service quality, reduce stress, and cope with change. Emotional intelligence includes characteristics such as self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, ability to work collaboratively, and communication skills. While the concept of EI has been a standard component of leadership development and management literature for almost two decades, relatively little research has been done on its applicability in libraries.
