The Relations Of The English Periodical Essay To The Development Of The English Novel In The Eighteenth Century, Madeline Jane O'Brien
Bachelors’ Theses
The literature of the eighteenth century was outward and finite-outward in the absence of a deep penetration into the heart and mind of man; and finite in the subjects and the arbitrary laws of style and verse to which it was confined. A philosophy of sensualism, a morality of expediency and a poetry of fancy-"Creamy Smoothness"- were the main characteristics of the age.
The Relation Of The Mind To The Voice And Body In Expression, Helen Brockman
The Relation Of The Mind To The Voice And Body In Expression, Helen Brockman
Bachelors’ Theses
Expression is the manifestation of mental activity; the outward sign of inward life. Every action of the face or hand, every modulation of the voice is simply an outward effect of an inward condition. We get the thoughts, feelings, and character of our fellow-being from the action of his body or from what we hear from his voice. Hence, we see that expression is not of the body, but through the body; it is manifested by motions and actions of the body, by tones and modulations of the voice. But "it is the soul that speaks."
