An Interdisciplinary Approach To Language Activism From Community Colleges: Linguistics Meets Communication Studies, Carlos De Cuba, Poppy Slocum, Laura Spinu
Publications and Research
This chapter describes the work of three linguists working in communication departments at two community colleges in the City University of New York system (CUNY) to counter deficit approaches toward dialectal variation in the field of communication studies (and beyond). The authors’ approach includes professional presentations, curricular redesign, identifying linguistic discrimination in textbooks, and conducting professional development workshops and seminars. They believe that the things they are doing are easily reproducible, so they are shared in this chapter in the hopes that more people will get actively involved in reducing/eliminating such harmful classroom pedagogies that involve deficit views of dialectal …

Embodied Action In Remote Online Interaction: A Preliminary Investigation Of Hand Raising Gestures In A Zoom Meeting, Angela Garcia
Embodied Action In Remote Online Interaction: A Preliminary Investigation Of Hand Raising Gestures In A Zoom Meeting, Angela Garcia
Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper I use a conversation analytic approach to investigate how participants in a meeting held remotely via Zoom use embodied action to solicit selection as next speaker. When hand raising is not immediately successful, participants use embodied actions to withdraw, modify, upgrade, downgrade or reissue gestures in pursuit of selection as next speaker. Due to the technological affordances and limitations of the remote meeting environment, participants’ gestures and hand positions differ from what would typically occur in face-to-face interaction, resulting in frequent gestures near the face that provide for both visibility to the Zoom audience and easy transition …

Black Girls Youth Participatory Action Research & Pedagogies, Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, Venus E. Evans-Winters
Faculty Scholarship
More than a decade ago, as a group of anti-racist and feminist researchers, including one of the authors, set out to survey the landscape of the schooling experiences of Black girls, we encountered a pronounced knowledge desert that threatened research-informed policy interventions that served to protect Black girls. Most research at the time focused on the educational experiences of male, female, or Black students. There was hardly any readily available data on the school-based outcomes of Black girls as a specific group of students with a unique set of experiences. In Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Overpoliced, & Underprotected (Crenshaw, …

Emotion Regulation And Cheap Talk As Signaling Strategies: Evidence From Crowdfunding For Ukraine, Alexandra Fischmann, Larry Zhiming Xu
Emotion Regulation And Cheap Talk As Signaling Strategies: Evidence From Crowdfunding For Ukraine, Alexandra Fischmann, Larry Zhiming Xu
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Crowdfunding, as enabled by donors worldwide, has played a critical role in financially supporting military forces, NGOs, humanitarian groups, and civilians in the Ukraine-Russia Crisis. This global mobilization underscores the evolving dynamics in the modern geopolitical landscape, emphasizing the transformative power of online collective action in fundraising and organizing. This study draws on signaling theory to pinpoint success indicators in crowdfunding for Ukraine projects on GoFundMe. Recognized as an effective explanatory framework, signaling theory is used as it bridges fundraising tactics with donation behavior in crowdfunding contexts. Particularly, the research examines how emotions and semantics contributed to (or hindered) fundraising …

Artificial Intelligence And Perception: An Empirical Study, Anthony J. Neil
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the impact of adjusting artificial intelligence explainability levels’ outputs on user perception. The overarching study extends within the Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) domain. It examines a spectrum of variables, including performance, cognizance, familiarity, transparency, system bias, and the overall impact of AI, to understand their collective and individual effects that enable effective professional use in an organization. The study aims to illuminate the relationship between the degree of explainability provided by large language models such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing AI and the performance of these models when tasked with XAI adjustments.

Learning And Listening: A Podcast On Navigating Latinx/E Identities, Lilianna A. Rivas
Communication Studies
Utilizing the Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979), the present podcast seeks to explore and understand how individuals with intersectional identities in the Latinx/e community communicate their identity to others in the Latinx/e community and society. Research in the fields of Ethnic Studies, Psychology, Education, and Communication focuses on issues and identities in the Latinx/e community. Much existing research focuses heavily on intersectionality, and the podcast will seek to do the same. These intersections of identities can conflict or be perceived as in conflict. This creates a gray area in the spectrum between interpersonal and intergroup interactions. Some examples …

Sappling: An Interactive Platform For Creative Expression And Collaboration, Alex Aquino
Graphic Communication
Sappling is a new application that aims to tackle some of the shortcomings of traditional social media, which currently dominates the way we interact with friends and other users online. In its initial phase, we plan to target a certain demographic of people that we feel would benefit most from the platform, such as engineers or musicians. As a part of my project, I plan to help identify which group we want to target in this development stage, using survey data and other metrics to measure different groups and their likelihood to benefit from this new platform. As some research …

Age And Ideology: The Emergence Of New Political Cleavages In Thailand’S 2566 (2023) Election, Napon Jatusripitak, Jacob Ricks
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Move Forward Party’s victory in Thailand’s 14 May 2566 (2023 CE) election surprised most observers, defying widespread predictions of a Pheu Thai win. Departing from traditional vote-mobilization strategies, Move Forward’s campaign focused largely on social media and broad calls for political reform while eschewing the vote-canvassing networks and economic policy promises that had delivered victory after victory for Pheu Thai. Does Move Forward’s win indicate changes in Thai voting behaviour? Relying on data from an original survey collected the week before and the week after the election, as well as observations from fieldwork, we identify two political cleavages that …
Cyberbullying During Covid-19 Pandemic: Relation To Perceived Social Isolation Among College And University Students, Nadya Stefani Neuhaeusler
Cyberbullying During Covid-19 Pandemic: Relation To Perceived Social Isolation Among College And University Students, Nadya Stefani Neuhaeusler
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
One tell-tale sign of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is the heavy reliance on electronic devices. Young adults in particular have indicated a greater presence on social media and high levels of loneliness during the pandemic. This trend has raised concerns about increased feelings of social isolation and reliance on technology, which could lead to more internet or computer crimes—including cyberbullying. Despite a growing body of literature, little is known about the association between cyberbullying victimization and social isolation among young adults— with even less known about this phenomenon in the context of the ongoing pandemic. Drawing on survey …
Differentiating Magic: A Call For A Differential Approach, Weston L. Wright
Differentiating Magic: A Call For A Differential Approach, Weston L. Wright
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper seeks to propose an alternative approach for studying magic. It is often the case inacademia, when studying magic, scholars use an understanding of modernity which favors a scientific perspective. When doing so, some scholars have concluded magic has become extinct in our modern society; despite recent research suggesting magical practice is thriving. Likewise, this scholarship promotes an idea of magic grounded in fear, ignorance, superstition, and fraudulence. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, I seek to advocate for an approach to magic that allows for a plurality of perspectives to be acknowledged, not just a scientific …

A Quantitative Study Of The Effects Of Algorithmic Recommendations On Users Of Streaming Services, Katarina Smikova
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In the ever-evolving digital landscape, the proliferation of streaming services has dramatically augmented access to television as a medium for cultural narration, facilitated by rapid technological advances. The popularity of streaming platforms has prompted companies to leverage sophisticated recommendation systems and algorithms. These tools are used to tailor content offerings based on consumer behavior analytics. However, these algorithmic recommendation systems have potential detriments, particularly their capacity to perpetuate biases and inequalities and raise concerns over consumer privacy rights. The purpose of this study was to examine the nuances in the influence of algorithmic recommendations offered by various streaming services on …
Indirect Communication As A Teaching Method For Developing Transference And Capability In Taiwanese College Students, Melynie J. Tooley
Indirect Communication As A Teaching Method For Developing Transference And Capability In Taiwanese College Students, Melynie J. Tooley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The capacity of a student to apply knowledge in new contexts involves the ability to transfer memorized knowledge to meaning, in real-world situations. However, there are conflicting views and an overall lack of research regarding how (the process) students in higher education, in Taiwan, transfer that knowledge. This is especially apparent in highly dynamic environments where knowledge is rapidly and continuously evolving, such as in the current technology arena and business industry. This research aims to explore indirect communication as a method for teachers to assist Taiwanese college students to transfer memorized facts, and thus develop capability in new contexts. …

The Clash Of Sustainable Development Goals With The Reality In Egypt: The Role Of The Media On The Perception Of Clean Energy Implementation., Nourhan Salah Hamed Ebrahim
Theses and Dissertations
Media has promoted sustainable development goals as essential for a country's social, economic, environmental, and political development. However, the SDGs may collide with the reality and impede development due to certain circumstances and challenges that might hinder the country’s ability to achieve these goals the same way they planned for. Besides, such challenges are not being covered in the media agenda, addressed by the government, or even been tackled in previous research. Thus, this study aims to examine whether there is a conflict between the SDGs and the reality in Egypt, focusing on SDG 7 (Clean Energy) by analyzing the …

The Double Bond Of Catholic Abolition: Christianity, Chattel Slavery, And Racial Capitalism, Elayne Oliphant
Journal of Global Catholicism
The reign of the first Pope to originate in the former colonies of the modern Euro-Christian empires calls us into awareness of the layers of interconnection between the Roman Catholic Church and the long “wake” (Sharpe 2016) of 1492. As anthropologists, I argue, our studies of Catholic practices must be informed by a detailed awareness of this history. I offer a broad historical view of how the Roman Catholic Church participated and, at times, led the way in initiating the trans-Atlantic system of Black chattel slavery and colonial expropriation in Euro-Christian Empires. As a scholar of Catholicism in France, I …

The Missionary And The Pea: An Anthropological Study Of The French Mep Economy, Michel Chambon
Journal of Global Catholicism
This paper discusses how the French missionaries of the Missions Etrangères de Paris (MEP) are linking humans and material objects to support their religious agenda. Revisiting the long history of this organization in Hong Kong and Thailand, but also its distinct recruitment and assignment policies, I highlight how these Catholic missionaries rely on their French cultural background to interconnect people and goods. While theological principles and political pragmatism shape their functioning, I argue that their economy is distinctively rooted in the French notion of terroir –the taste of place— an embodied relation to land that acts as a cultural mechanism …

A Queer Chinese Pilgrimage: Encountering Catholic Life In Manila, George Wu Bayuga
Journal of Global Catholicism
Starting in the late 1990s, Chinese Catholic priests, sisters, and seminarians began journeying to the Philippines to undergo religious and spiritual formation. This paper documents this journey and characterizes it as a kind of queer pilgrimage. Recognizing the queer theoretical parallels between minoritized populations under hegemony and Catholic life under socialism, this paper calls for attention to the queer work of imagining futures that emerges through processes of movement, encounter, and reflexivity across new political and social spaces. Specifically, this paper highlights how state-religious relations under socialism can differentially shape how Chinese Catholics think of themselves, faith formation, and how …

Gender medicine is a multidisciplinary science and represents an important perspective for pathophysiological and clinical studies in the third millennium. Here, it is provided an overview of the topics discussed in a recent course on the Role of Sex and Gender in Ageing and Longevity. The paper highlights three themes discussed in the course, i.e., the interaction of gender/sex with, i) the pathophysiology of age-related diseases; ii), the role of genetics and epigenetics in ageing and longevity and, iii) the immune responses of older people to pathogens, vaccines, autoantigens, and allergens. Although largely unexplored, sex and gender are modulators …
