JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

The presence of online platforms such as financial technology lending platforms is like a double-edged knife for women. These platforms pave the way for restrictions on women accessing loans. However, the use of fintech poses risks to women. They become victims of cybercrime with the existence of desk collectors who collect online loans and the third party who use the women's data. This study aims to examine the cybercrime implications of using fintech experienced by women related to fintech lending and then explore the role, data protection, and scope of the PDP Law as a solution. This study uses Qualitative …

Tribun-Bali.com is one of the biggest news portals in Bali that implements SEO. This study aims to depict the hierarchy of influences on the implementation of SEO in the Tribun-Bali.com newsroom. It is a qualitative descriptive study that employs interview methods with key informants. Utilizing the hierarchy of influences theory proposed by …

The Political Economy Of Knowledge: Navigating Scientometric Enthusiasm Amidst Political And Economic Forces Shaping The Production And Dissemination Of Scientific Knowledge, Maria Cernat

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

While we witness heightened enthusiasm in certain peripheral areas of scientific production regarding scientometric standards, there are increasingly pressing issues concerning how the ideal of objective and rational science is being called into question. In this article, I contrast the enthusiasm for the "prestige" of top-tier journals with the increasingly urgent problems related to the lack of independence of researchers and scientific research itself in a world dominated by security institutions and corporations. While many authors rush to blame postmodernists for the lack of trust in science, recent studies in the history of science reveal an increased role of security …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Live game streaming combines many of the social mechanisms and cultural impacts of social media with the entertainment and social impacts of traditional media. What's In It For Me? Applying Social Exchange Theory To Beverage Brand Engagement On Facebook, Destiny Elise Rinder

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Managing engagement with existing and potential consumers on social networking sites has proven to be a challenge for many brands (Gretry et al., 2017). Focusing on the marketing communications of American beverage brands on Facebook, the researcher aimed to learn why some brands earn more engagement than competing brands. To answer this question, the researcher conducted a qualitative study that utilized a content analysis. Social exchange theory was applied to the findings of the content analysis, which allowed the researcher to perceive and interpret the high-value rewards of brand communication. Applying a communication theory that combines behavioral psychology and elementary …

(Dis)Invested Bodies: The Neoliberal Crafting Of Disability, T. Wesley Aug 2024

(Dis)Invested Bodies: The Neoliberal Crafting Of Disability, T. Wesley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a unifying text, my dissertation explores the relationship between cultural production and the neoliberal crafting of humanity, the term I use to describe how social dimensions—including the construction of the textual and material body—become reorganized and governed through market relations. While many disability scholars and activists frame the ADA’s failures through social misunderstandings of disability, few have seriously attended to the limits of the ADA as a neoliberal fusing of economic governance and classical liberal individualism.

Tracing convergences between the ADA and earlier US disability legislation to socioeconomic and political reforms enacted …

Baby Dust: A Narrative Analysis Of Infertility Journeys On Youtube, Patricia Carrillo Aug 2024

Baby Dust: A Narrative Analysis Of Infertility Journeys On Youtube, Patricia Carrillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infertility is a distressing experience for those diagnosed and often exacerbated by engagement with biomedical treatments. This thesis is an exploration of infertility “journeys” posted on YouTube. Through a narrative analysis of 8 YouTube channels, several key themes were identified, specifically embodiment of the infertility label, barriers to treatment, and agency. This work uses the mindful body framework to look at how the individual body, social body, and body politic shape and reinforce these themes in the context of biomedical infertility treatment. These findings suggest infertility is a dynamic and distressing experience but by engaging in the narrative process, through …

Extending Uses & Gratifications Through Mediated Outgroup Social Awareness, Kandice Nicholle Green Aug 2024

Extending Uses & Gratifications Through Mediated Outgroup Social Awareness, Kandice Nicholle Green

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation introduces mediated outgroup social awareness (MOSA) into uses and gratifications (U&G) theory, identifying it as a significant gratification that spans various media formats. Through a quantitative online survey, the research demonstrates that individuals use entertainment media to deepen their understanding of social inequalities affecting social groups different from their own. MOSA is unique compared to other established uses and gratifications because it does not vary based on media type (TV shows, films, music, user-generated content, and entertainment news). Additionally, this study finds mainly low to moderate positive relationships between MOSA and the traditional U&G themes—cognitive, affective, personal integrative, …

Principal Agency 50 Years After The Lau Decision: Building And Sustaining Bilingual Education Programs For Asian Languages, Kevin M. Wong, Zhongfeng Tian

Education Division Scholarship

This study examined how three champion principals of Asian language dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs—Cantonese, Korean, and Mandarin—in California have navigated the oscillating language-in-education policies after the Lau decision. We explored principals' various roles through a lens of agency in a social justice leadership framework, specifically considering the opportunities and challenges for agentive leadership from three different phases: foregrounding and engaging, planning and implementing, and evaluating and sustaining. Findings demonstrate that the success of DLBE programs goes beyond the overarching language policies that supposedly enable bilingual education; rather it hinges on the bottom-up commitment, collaboration and resilience of principals, …

Why I Think Linkedin Is Age Neutral And How It Bridges Generational Gaps, Essraa Nawar Aug 2024

Why I Think Linkedin Is Age Neutral And How It Bridges Generational Gaps, Essraa Nawar

Library Articles and Research

"Earlier this morning, during a lively conversation with my Information Gone Wild podcast co-hosts— Maurice Coleman , Paul Signorelli , our marketing consultant, Abbie Fentress Swanson —we brainstormed strategies to better market our newly launched series. As we debated which platforms could effectively reach our diverse audience, I suggested focusing more on LinkedIn. My reasoning? LinkedIn is one of the few digital spaces that feels genuinely 'age-neutral.' Unlike platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok, where generational lines are sharply drawn, LinkedIn is where people of all ages—from my 19- and 21-year-old sons who (shockingly) like my posts there, to my …

Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs Aug 2024

Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Looking at fan activity through the lens of play, this paper considers the archiving opportunities and challenges posed by new technology for playful ephemeral fan co-creation in multiplatform digital contexts. These include technical concerns such as platform fragility and how to capture inherent liveness and temporality, but also ethical concerns such as sustainability, consent and content moderation.

To examine this, the paper takes fan-created alternate reality games (ARGs) as a particular example of such archiving challenges. It first describes a real example of such a game, ‘Blow the Man Down’ before introducing speculative design as a method to consider a …

The Delicate Situation Of Childhood Vaccination: On The Dispreferredness Of Soliciting Parents' Intent To Vaccinate, Robert Prettner, Hedwig Te Molder, Jeffrey D. Robinson Aug 2024

The Delicate Situation Of Childhood Vaccination: On The Dispreferredness Of Soliciting Parents' Intent To Vaccinate, Robert Prettner, Hedwig Te Molder, Jeffrey D. Robinson

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the Netherlands, parents of newborns typically participate in two-, four-, and eight-week medical consultations to monitor their children’s development and discuss vaccinations, which will not be administered before eight weeks. During these visits, healthcare professionals routinely ask parents if they intend to vaccinate their children (i.e. to participate in the National Immunization Program). Using Conversation Analysis, we examine 62 videotaped consultations and present two lines of evidence to argue that the sequence initiated by professionals wherein they solicit parents’ intent to vaccinate is dispreferred. First, this action is routinely deferred by preliminary sequences. Second, when professionals eventually initiate this …

Employing BERTopic for topic modeling, I analyzed conversations embedded in YouTube comments from Warner Bros.'s own promotional content as well as third-party YouTube content pre- and post- the film’s release to unearth the themes and sentiments associated with the iconic character. Our primary objective was to look beyond the stereotypical perception of Barbie as a two-dimensional figure and shed light on the diverse and complex discussions surrounding her cinematic representation. …

Recuperative Rhetorics: A Novel Framework For Rhetorical Analysis, Nicolas Palumbo Aug 2024

Recuperative Rhetorics: A Novel Framework For Rhetorical Analysis, Nicolas Palumbo

Masters Theses (Archived)

This thesis details the creation of the Recuperative Rhetorics analytical framework, which is a scalable, transdisciplinary framework for analyzing rhetorical texts, from individual speeches to societal understandings of legacy and history. It discusses the framework’s theoretical underpinnings, explains how to utilize it in analyzing rhetoric and rhetorical works, and provides examples of the framework in action across multiple mediums. The framework takes inspiration from the theories and praxes of Situationist International, primarily those of the spectacle, ready-made objects, détournement, and recuperation. The framework uses these ideas, and then builds upon more established analytical frameworks to establish a base from which …

Corporate Social Advocacy: A Study Of Brand And Consumer Activism In The Era Of Social Media, Christa L. Taylor

Student Theses and Dissertations

As corporations recognize the importance of balancing profitability with social responsibility, the adoption of corporate social advocacy has become a critical approach for addressing pressing social issues, fostering trust, and enhancing brand reputation. Growing public pressure has forced corporations to take a more vocal stance on social and political issues. Considering that corporate social advocacy is an emerging trend and is viewed as a practice outside of a corporation’s standard business practices, organizations have been presented with a new challenge of achieving legitimacy in their advocacy and taking on an expanded role as corporate citizens. This study explores the ways …
