Group Dynamics, Gender, And Field : An Ethnographic Study Of The Yo-Yoing Sport Subculture In Hong Kong, Ho Wang Kwong
Group Dynamics, Gender, And Field : An Ethnographic Study Of The Yo-Yoing Sport Subculture In Hong Kong, Ho Wang Kwong
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research explores the yo-yoing sport subculture in Hong Kong, tracing its evolution from a popular pastime to a recognized sport with a global competition structure led by the International Yo-Yo Federation. By situating yo-yoing within lifestyle sports literature, this study offers a sociological understanding of yo-yo players’ experiences and challenges in Hong Kong. Yo-yoing is an interesting case to study because of its prevailing label as a toy hobby, thus players are generally positive to mainstreaming which differs from many lifestyle sports participants’ reluctant attitude. The central question of this study is: How does a subculture gain legitimation as …
Comparing A Narrative And Didactic Approach To An Invasive Species Education Video, Tim Campbell, Bret Shaw, Amulya Rao, Jenna Klink, Feiran Chen
Comparing A Narrative And Didactic Approach To An Invasive Species Education Video, Tim Campbell, Bret Shaw, Amulya Rao, Jenna Klink, Feiran Chen
Journal of Extension
Video is a common tool for engaging audiences in Extension topics, yet evaluation of the different video production approaches is lacking. We compared learning and emotional outcomes after boaters in the Great Lakes watched either a narrative or didactic video focused on how to prevent the spread of an aquatic invasive species. There were differences in how each approach affected viewers, indicating that there can be utility in both approaches to video production. Extension staff that are creating videos should have these outcomes in mind to promote desired behaviors.
From Fury To Forgiveness: Exploring The Mediating Role Of Emotions In The Relationship Between Crisis Type, Corporate Social Responsibility Fit, And Organizational Outcomes, James Ndone
Communication, Media, and Culture
This study investigates how three types of emotions (anger, affective empathy, and cognitive empathy) mediate the relationship between crisis type and corporate social responsibility (CSR) fit and organizational outcomes such as purchase intentions, negative word-of-mouth (nwom), organizational reputation, as well as forgiveness. An online 2 (crisis type: product-harm vs. moral-harm) x 2 (CSR fit: high fit vs. low fit) between-subjects design (N = 412) was conducted with the participants recruited via CloudResearch, a crowdsourcing platform. The findings indicate that anger significantly mediates the relationship between crisis type and crisis outcomes, with product-harm crises increasing anger and leading to more negative …

Communication And Posttraumatic Growth: The Power Of Positive Declarations, Jennifer L. Owen
Communication And Posttraumatic Growth: The Power Of Positive Declarations, Jennifer L. Owen
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Research has explored the relationship between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and communication trends. Yet, there is a gap in research regarding how positive declarations of desired outcomes can influence PTG and be applied in a therapeutic context. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine if positive declarations of psychological growth facilitate PTG after trauma and impact levels of hope, anxiety, or depression. A small pilot study was conducted through six counseling sessions with participants (N = 16) divided into either the control (n = 8) or experimental group (n = 8). A novel Positive Communication Approach (PCA), distinguished by …
Anime: A Qualitative Study Exploring Miyazaki’S Influence On Fans And Fan Art Through The Perspective Of Visual Communication Within The Sociocultural And Cybernetic Traditions, Lynda C. Welch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Visual communication has been an acknowledged form of human communication for millennia, dating back to prehistoric cave paintings. Aristotle noted its importance, although it lost its prominence as a recognized communicative form until the 20th century, when scholars such as Innis, McLuhan, Postman, and Foss expanded upon its importance. This identification was a crucial point in visual communication, heralding the birth of comics, film, television, animation, and Japanese anime. Lamarre, McCloud, and McLuhan were a few theorists who grasped the significance of animation and visual communication, although this recognition did not extend to fan art and the visual communication possibilities …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation investigates the adaptation strategies of senior journalists in the ever-evolving media landscape. The extensive technological advancements in media informed the idea behind this dissertation. The study employs a phenomenological approach in exploring the experiences of seasoned journalists and their approaches toward transitioning from conventional journalism to the modern digital landscape. Neil Postman’s media ecology theory is the theoretical framework for this dissertation. The theory postulates that the changes in media greatly influence communication, interaction, and human perception. The research commences by investigating the historical context of journalism, taking into consideration the shift to digital media from print and …

Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo
Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo
Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal
Luis Jiménez’s Southwest Pietà (1984) intended to combat cultural amnesia that obscured Native Americans’ and Mexicans’ contributions to the state. Jiménez’s Pietà sought to counter the iconography that shaped New Mexico’s colonialist heritage. But Old Town Albuquerque shrouds Native American and Mexican contributions to the region. Albuquerque’s public art has often been deployed as a wedge to write and rewrite narratives about land inhabitants, but the city’s public art tells a powerful story about race and place in New Mexico. This essay explores the socio-historical battle of land memorialization in Old Town Albuquerque and provides a geo-racial perspective about the …

I Could Get A Look At A T-Bone Steak By Sticking My Head Up A Bull’S A** But I Would Rather Take The Butcher’S Word For It: An Applied Approach To Persuasive Communication, Corey J. Liberman
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
This teaching activity tasks students working in groups to determine how to structure messages to increase the likelihood that those targeted with these messages would find themselves in a new cohort. Persuasion is all about the creation, solidification, and alteration of attitudes and are, according to research, the most statistically significant predictors of behavior: people are more likely to engage in behaviors if they have positively-valenced attitudes toward them. According to Harvard Health (2022), 8% of the world’s population does not eat meat, while the remaining 92% find themselves in other cohorts (e.g., eat meat monthly, eat meat weekly, eat …
Fatphobia In Ballet: The Impact Of Organizational Practices On Body Size And Mental Health In American Ballet Companies, Ashley Chenery
Fatphobia In Ballet: The Impact Of Organizational Practices On Body Size And Mental Health In American Ballet Companies, Ashley Chenery
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
In American ballet companies, female dancers’ weights factor into decisions regarding hiring, casting, and promotions. However, female dancers are now using social media to speak out against fatphobic organizational practices. This paper analyzes personal accounts of size discrimination posted to Instagram and YouTube by high-profile veteran ballerinas of New York City Ballet. It also includes interviews with professional Gen Z ballerinas (in companies spanning the US), who discuss current fatphobic practices in companies and schools. Utilizing qualitative coding, this paper seeks to disarticulate thinness from artistry and to urge mental health as a priority in American ballet.

Social Media Influencers' Impact On Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Kennedi O. Kutz, Kiara Espinal, Erin Flynn, Julia Cheney
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
The study entails how social media usage and parasocial relationships with social media influencers impact the audience’s purchases as a consumer. The survey covers a wide range of questions discussing the different social media platforms, how often they engage on them, and how often they click and engage with advertisements and influencers. It also covered questions that collected the participants' demographics to better understand which groups are more likely to be influenced by advertisements and influencers. We have found that younger audiences are more likely to have their consumer purchases influenced by social media advertisements and influencers than older audiences. …

E-Service Delivery And People-Centric Development In The Digital Age: A Case Of Rural South Africa, Tapfuma Pashapa, Ulrike Rivett
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
This paper explores the role of ICT proliferation in rural development, specifically in terms of improving public services within the South African rural context. The South African setting provided an opportunity to reflect on a people-centric approach that prioritizes social inclusion and public participation to balance a local government landscape historically skewed against rural areas. Interviews were conducted in rural municipalities to determine the development priorities of households and the impact of ICTs on rural development. The findings highlight that the economics of service delivery tend to favour service providers and those who are socio-economically advantaged. This results in varying …

From Tweets To Streets: How Kenya's Generation Z (Gen Z) Is Redefining Political And Digital Activism, Hossana Twinomurinzi
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
This paper examines how Kenya's Generation Z (Gen Z) used digital technologies and platforms in a leaderless political and digital activism against the 2024 Finance Bill. Using post-digital theory and critical realism as analytical lenses, the paper examines how the embedded digital technologies and platforms were used for mass grassroots mobilisation. The paper adopted both qualitative content analysis with quantitative data scraping from social media and online news sources to reveal the main trigger as the deep economic grievances, which then triggered a demand for government accountability. The analysis also revealed how digital platforms (mainly X and Facebook) played a …

Media Framing Of Transportation, Agriculture, And Gasoline In The Russia-Ukraine War, Sk Farhan Rabbi
Student Theses and Dissertations
The war between Russia and Ukraine has the potential to exacerbate social and economic effects on a worldwide scale, impacting several industries including energy, transportation, and agriculture crisis. Due to their heavy reliance on imports of key foods, the Middle East and North Africa are the most susceptible countries. The COVID-19 epidemic increased worldwide demand, and bad harvests all occurred at the same time as the conflict, further pressuring the food supply, transportation, and gasoline costs. Previous studies identified three categories: countries with diminishing fuel security, those making little advancements, and Latvia, which has undertaken noteworthy initiatives. Sanctions against Russia …

Trust Everybody, But Always Cut The Cards: An Exercise For Exploring Truth-Bias And Deception Detection, John S. Seiter
Trust Everybody, But Always Cut The Cards: An Exercise For Exploring Truth-Bias And Deception Detection, John S. Seiter
Communication Studies and Philosophy Faculty Publications
This activity helps students examine key elements of truth-default theory. Specifically, by participating in a deception detection game, which secretly prompts different teams to be more or less suspicious, students learn that people’s tendency to be “truth-biased” leads to lower accuracy when judging actual lies and higher accuracy when judging actual truths (i.e., “the veracity effect”).

A Case Study: Do You Address Your Volunteers’ Well-Being Or Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic? If So, How?, Daniel J. Robotham, Suzanna R. Windon, Ann E. Echols
Journal of Extension
The uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic had a profound negative impact on volunteer mental health and well-being. We surveyed local non-profit organizational leaders about their practices toward addressing volunteer well-being and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study results indicated that while over a quarter of organizations did nothing to address volunteer well-being, other organizations utilized several approaches, including one-on-one and group meetings, program implementation, office culture investment, task assignment, and information dissemination. These findings provide valuable insight for Extension educators to develop community mental health and well-being programs to assist non-profit organizations' response to future uncertainty.
“Feels A Lot Like Love” : Love-In(G) China In The Reform Era, Chang Qu
“Feels A Lot Like Love” : Love-In(G) China In The Reform Era, Chang Qu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research examines the changing landscape of "love" in China during the economic reform since 1978. This landscape includes the drastic social transformations, the decentralisation of state control, and the intense processes of marketisation and privatisation of the economy. The thesis investigates the changing values, moral codes and forms of intimacy inscribed in "love", thus exploring the privatisation of the heart during China's economic reform. Although focusing on contemporary times, this research also examines the genealogy of "love" since the early moment of China's modernity, and explores the historical residuals that exist in today's emotional landscape. My research argues that …
