Abstract
Acoustic recordings of underwater sounds produced by marine mammals present an attractive alternative to costly and logistically complex ship based visual surveys for collecting population data for various species.
The first reported use of underwater acoustic recordings in the long-term monitoring of sperm whale populations was by Ackleh et al. (Ackleh et al., 2012). The paper describes counting sperm whale clicks at different locations to track population changes over time.
Analysis of sperm whale clicks offers additional insight into sperm whale populations. The echo location clicks (usual clicks) of sperm whales can be used to give an estimate of …

The overarching aim of my PhD research is to deepen our understanding of r-process nu- cleosynthesis. The initial phase of my work involved developing a Machine Learning-based nuclear mass model, specifically tailored to predict nuclear masses crucial for r-process nucleosynthesis. This model was then applied to simulate the r-process, focusing on neutron-rich nuclei significant to nucleosynthesis. The simulations yielded r-process abundance patterns, extending up to thorium and uranium, that align qualitatively with the observed solar system abundance patterns, with the characteristic peaks well positioned. Advancing our study further, we introduced a novel graph-based methodology named GrRproc for calculating r-process abundances. …

Laser shock peening (LSP) is an important material surface strengthening technique that uses laserinduced shock waves to cause severe plastic deformation near material surfaces. It can significantly improve material properties like hardness, strength, fatigue life, and corrosion resistance and is widely used in industrial sectors such as automotive, aerospace, nuclear, and medical areas. The conventional nanosecond laser shock peening (ns-LSP) has demonstrated effectiveness but faces challenges such as complex setup, low throughput, high energy consumption, and inflexibility for complex geometries. Polarization domains are the fundamental elements in ferroelectric materials that contribute to their properties. A natural polarization domain, which possesses a specific polarization direction or state, typically ranges in size from one unit cell to a few micrometers. Therefore, studying polarization domains requires the fabrication of materials and the measurement of ferroelectric properties at the nanoscale. In this study, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is employed to fabricate barium titanate (BTO) crystals, and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is used to measure the properties of polarization domains at the nanoscale. Organic and inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted intense attention in the past decades due to their fantastic performance in stability, durability, rapid processing, and high efficiency competitive to Si-based counterparts. The lab-fabricated solar cells based on organolead halide perovskites have reached a record efficiency of 26.1 %, which implies that halide perovskite materials may open a new paradigm for future solar energy innovation. Organometal/inorganic halide perovskites take advantage of tunable bandgaps, engineerable composites/interfaces, and solution-processible methods that render easy integrations of subcells to form tandem and multijunction modules with higher efficiencies potentially beyond the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit. …

The pressing need to control carbon dioxide emissions has propelled extensive research efforts employing a variety of approaches across the globe. In flue-gas recovery of CO2, the water-lean amine-based solvent N-(2-ethoxyethyl)-3-morpholinopropan-1-amine (2-EEMPA), has shown exceptional performance. Recent studies show that 2-EEMPA exhibits intermediate-range order (IRO), beyond the first nearest neighbor length scale, consisting of tetrameric clusters. Density Functional Theory (DFT) is one of the most successful and popular computational Quantum Mechanical approaches to understanding materials. DFT allows the prediction of material properties from the electron density. Although in principle, density functional theory is exact, it, however, relies on approximate functional for exchange-correlation energy. Due to the approximate nature of the exchange-correlation functional, the self-Coulomb energy of the electrons is not exactly canceled out by the self-exchange, leading to the spurious self-interaction error (SIE). The Galactic Halo is a key target for indirect dark matter detection. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a high-energy (∼300 GeV to >100 TeV) gamma-ray detector located in central Mexico. HAWC operates via the water Cherenkov technique and has both a wide field of view of ∼ 2 sr and a >95% duty cycle, making it ideal for analyses of highly extended sources. We made use of these properties of HAWC, and a new background-estimation technique optimized for extended sources to probe a large region of the Galactic Halo for dark matter signals. Recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies have already led to wide-scale adoption of 3D-printed parts in various industries. The expansion in choice of materials that can be processed, particularly using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and the steady advancements in dimensional accuracy control have extended the range of applications far beyond rapid prototyping. However, additive manufacturing still has considerable limitations compared to traditional and subtractive manufacturing processes. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer-scale neutrino observatory built using a gigaton of instrumented ice near the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica; it measures the Cherenkov light emitted by the daughter particles of deep inelastic scattering interactions occurring inside and around the detector from neutrinos of both astrophysical and atmospheric origin. For eV2-scale sterile neutrino models, matter-effects can yield resonant muon antineutrino to sterile oscillations for TeV-scale up-going neutrinos. For certain combinations of mixing angles, this is expected to yield resonant muon antineutrino to tau antineutrino oscillations at the same energies and angles as the muon neutrino disappearance. …

This dissertation presents measurements and theoretical modeling demonstrating the capability of Doppler Broadened annihilation gamma Spectroscopy (DBS) to provide element-specific information from the topmost atomic layer of surfaces that are either clean or covered with adsorbates or thin films. Our measurements show that the energy spectra of Doppler-shifted annihilation gamma photons emitted following the annihilation of positrons from the topmost atomic layers of clean gold (Au) and copper (Cu) differ significantly. With the aid of the positron annihilation-induced Auger electron spectroscopy (PAES) performed simultaneously with DBS, we show that measurable differences between the Doppler broadened gamma spectra from Au and …

Dysregulated eEF2K expression is implicated in the pathogenesis of many human cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), making it a plausible therapeutic target. However, specific eEF2K inhibitors with potent anti-cancer activity have not been available so far. Targeted protein degradation has emerged as a new strategy for drug discovery. In this study, a novel small molecule chemical is designed and synthesized, named as compound C1, which shows potent activity in degrading eEF2K. We present a pilot study of the atomic neutral hydrogen gas (H I) content of ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates. In this paper, we use the pre-pilot Eridanus field data from the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey to search for H I in UDG candidates found in the Systematically Measuring Ultra-diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We narrow down to 78 SMUDGes UDG candidates within the maximum radial extents of the Eridanus subgroups for this study. Most SMUDGes UDGs candidates in this study have effective radii smaller than 1.5 kpc and thus fail to meet the defining size threshold. We …

The fundamental properties of Uranium and Neptunium were investigated with Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD) to study the behavior or 5f electrons with chalcogen, alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals. Two novel compounds were generated: NaCuUS3 and NaCuNpS3. The theoretical predictions and results from the (La,Y)Hx ternary hydride solution provided evidence toward phase stability at comparatively lower pressures, as consequence the (Yb,Lu)Hx and (Tm,Lu)Hx ternary hydrides are studied here with pressures up to 25 GPa in the diamond anvil cell. The onset of an unknown feature in the XRD pattern coincides with crystallographic plane distortions in the tetragonal lattice of ytterbium hydride at their laser-heated interface, possibly driven by a solid solution of Lu-Yb. Findings in collected Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns in an Ar environment suggest potential stability of the FCC and high-temperature HCP …

Molybdenum disulfide has a wide range of applications in energy conversion devices, like thin-film solar cells, batteries, bio sensors, and more. Although the properties of MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) have been widely studied, disagreements and discrepancies regarding its electronic structure remain.
In this thesis, a highly-oriented synthetic 2H phase MoS2 single crystal is investigated using a toolchest of spectroscopic techniques to uncover its chemical and electronic properties. Josephson junctions have garnered significant attention due to their unique electronic properties and applications in quantum devices. In this thesis, we investigate the fabrication processes and characterization of two-dimensional (2D) Josephson junctions consisting of layered van der Waals materials: niobium diselenide (2H-NbSe2) and few layered tungsten ditelluride (1T’-WTe2). The reduction of dimensionality can bring forth unique characteristics in certain materials that are not seen in their bulk counterparts, making them prime candidates for physical exploration. 2H-NbSe2 is an s-wave superconductor at temperatures near and below 7 K. 1T’-WTe2 is a semimetal in bulk but …

The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum requested an interactive water vortex exhibit to both engage and entertain inquisitive guests, ages two to eight. The goal was to design and manufacture an exhibit that would educate its users on the fluid mechanics behind water vortices. They activate the mechanics by spinning a wheel, which is perceived as the catalyst to manipulate the flow of water to successfully create a whirlpool. Our team has created an interactive display that will enlighten young minds, providing the museum with an educational exhibit which shares a concept not currently taught by any other. Our project …

Teaching Introductory Physics In The Context Of Personal And Societal Issues Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Guang Zeng, Liang Zeng

This paper reports on introductory physics instruction contextualized in terms of coronavirus-related personal and societal issues. Students in this descriptive qualitative study gained a strong grasp of a range of physics concepts associated with the nature and mechanisms of the spread of the coronavirus, such as projectile motion, air convection, Reynolds number, and Brownian motion; additionally, they were able to discuss the application of physics relevant to the N95 face masks. Students found this pedagogical approach engaging, as shown in their reflective writing.

Neutrinos are the Standard Model (SM) particles which we understand the least, often due to how weakly they interact with the other SM particles. Beyond this, very little is known about interactions among the neutrinos, i.e., their self-interactions. The SM predicts neutrino self-interactions at a level beyond any current experimental capabilities, leaving open the possibility for beyond-the-SM interactions across many energy scales. In this white paper, we review the current knowledge of neutrino self-interactions from a vast array of probes, from cosmology, to astrophysics, to the laboratory. In confocal single-molecule FRET experiments, the joint distribution of FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution can reveal underlying molecular conformational dynamics via deviation from their theoretical Forster relationship. This shift is referred to as a dynamic shift. In this study, we investigate the influence of the free energy landscape in protein conformational dynamics on the dynamic shift by simulation of the associated continuum reaction coordinate Langevin dynamics, yielding a deeper understanding of the dynamic and structural information in the joint FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution. Highly charged ions have emerged on the scene of atomic physics because of their compressed electron cloud enhancing various physical phenomena. While transitions in ions and highly charged ions provide valuable information to different communities, their application in nuclear charge radius measurements becomes increasingly prominent. In this work, we report the extreme ultra-violet spectroscopy of Na-like ions and x-ray spectroscopy of Cu-like, Co-like, and Ni-like ions that explore nuclear charge distributions and the identification of new transitions, respectively.

Radon gas can cause lung harm, leading to extensive research on the biological effects of radon exposure in human lungs under various environmental conditions. The study estimates radon progeny doses for workers in Erbil city's building materials industries, focusing on alpha particle energy deposition, particle clearance, and lung deposition. Using a home condition of 1 Bq.m-3, radon progeny particle-absorbed doses in the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar-interstitial sections, and lungs were determined in the first scenario. Tropical cyclone intensity prediction remains a challenge despite computational and observational developments because successful intensity forecasting requires implementing a multitude of atmospheric and oceanic processes. Hurricane Maria 2017 and Hurricane Dorian 2019 serve as prime examples of rapidly intensifying storms that devastated communities in the Caribbean. A lack of understanding and parameterization of crucial physics involved in tropical cyclone intensity in existing forecast models may have led to these and other forecasting errors.

We present an approach to achieve zero modes in lattice models that do not rely on any symmetry or topology of the bulk, which are robust against disorder in the bulk of any type and strength. Such symmetry-free zero modes (SFZMs) are formed by attaching a single site or small cluster with zero mode(s) to the bulk, which serves as the “nucleus” that expands to the entire lattice. We identify the requirements on the couplings between this boundary and the bulk, which reveals that this approach is intrinsically non-Hermitian. This study aims to assess radon-222 concentration levels in public ground water wells in Sana'a city, Yemen. Forty-three well water samples were collected from the study area. The alpha spectroscopy method was used to measure the samples using a RAD7 detector. The radon concentrations were in the range from 0.82 ± 0.38 Bq/L to 38.73 ± 2.98 Bq/L. A moderate correlation of radon levels with aquifer type was observed. Also, weak correlations of radon levels with electric conductivity, pH, and temperature, and no correlation with measured heavy metals were observed.
