Electro-Optical Effect Of 4-N-Alkyl-Sulfanyl-4' Isothiocyanate-Biphenyl Liquid Crystal Homologous Series Under Terahertz Frequency: A Theoretical Approach, Yogesh Kumar, Narinder Kumar
Electro-Optical Effect Of 4-N-Alkyl-Sulfanyl-4' Isothiocyanate-Biphenyl Liquid Crystal Homologous Series Under Terahertz Frequency: A Theoretical Approach, Yogesh Kumar, Narinder Kumar
Makara Journal of Science
This work presented the electro-optical effect of the homologous series 4-n-alkyl-sulfanyl-4'-isothiocyanate-biphenyl (N1SC13H8-SH2n+1Cn) under an electric field with terahertz (THz) frequency. The increase in alkyl sulfanyl chain length reduces the birefringence but increases the order parameter in THz frequency. An inverse relationship exists between the birefringence and order parameter. Meanwhile, the increase in alkyl sulfanyl chain length increases the refractive index with an even–odd effect. Birefringence, refractive index, order parameter, and director angle show an even–odd effect in the THz frequency range. The calculation is performed between 1 and 1,200 THz frequency. The isothiocyanate stretching corresponding to …

Quantum Computers For Nuclear Physics, Muhammad F. Yusf
Theses and Dissertations
We explore the paradigm shift in quantum computing and quantum information science, emphasizing the synergy between hardware advancements and algorithm development. Only now have the recent advances in quantum computing hardware, despite a century of quantum mechanics, unveiled untapped potential, requiring innovative algorithms for full utilization. Project 1 addresses quantum applications in radiative reactions, overcoming challenges in many-fermion physics due to imaginary time evolution, stochastic methods like Monte Carlo simulations, and the associated sign problem. The methodology introduces the Electromagnetic Transition System and a general two-level system for computing radiative capture reactions. Project 2 utilizes Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) to …

Advancements In Time Resolved Spectroscopy And Nonlinear Microscopy, Bryan Semon
Theses and Dissertations
Non-linear optical processes such as coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and sum frequency generation offer a view into the chemical and biological interactions of molecules that is distinctly different from linear techniques like near infra-red and fluorescence. This insight comes at a cost: non-linear techniques are more sensitive to external perturbations of the system, increasing the noise and decreasing the repeatability of the data. We work here on both aspects of these non-linear techniques, taking advantage of their power to offer new imaging techniques as well as working to quantify and reduce the non-resonant noise inherent to the system. In pursuit …
Radiative Alpha Capture On Carbon-12, Ling Gan
Radiative Alpha Capture On Carbon-12, Ling Gan
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we used Effective Field Theory (EFT) to calculate the radiative ALPHA capture on 12C . This reaction is considered the “holy grail” in nuclear astrophysics because it determines the relevant abundance of 16O and 12C . We considered the E1 transition from initial p-wave at energy around the Gamow energy EG =0.3MeV.The theoretical formula for the cross section is obtained by fitting the EFT parameters to the phase shift and S-factor data. We find the Effective Range Expansion (ERE) parameters describing the ALPHA-wave phase shift are fine tuned. The shallow bound state and the resonance ALPHA-wave …
Characterization Of Isomeric States In Neutron-Rich Nuclei Approaching N = 28, Timilehin Hezekiah Ogunbeku
Characterization Of Isomeric States In Neutron-Rich Nuclei Approaching N = 28, Timilehin Hezekiah Ogunbeku
Theses and Dissertations
The investigation of isomeric states in neutron-rich nuclei provides useful insights into the underlying nuclear configurations, and understanding their occurrence along an isotopic chain can inform about shell evolution. Recent studies on neutron-rich Si isotopes near the magic number N = 20 and approaching N = 28 have revealed the presence of low-lying states with intruder configurations, resulting from multiple-particle, multiple-hole excitations across closed shell gaps. The characterization of these states involves measuring their half-lives and transition probabilities.
In this study, a new low-energy (7/2−1) isomer at 68 keV in 37Si was accessed via beta decay …
Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of Internal Wave Interactions On Conch Reef, Florida Keys, Megan Miller
Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of Internal Wave Interactions On Conch Reef, Florida Keys, Megan Miller
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Internal waves breaking on continental shelves play a significant role in mixing and nutrient delivery to coral reef ecosystems. As internal solitary waves, or solitons, propagate shoreward onto continental slopes, they can become unstable and break into turbulent bores that bring cool, nutrient-rich sub-thermocline water shoreward onto coral reefs. The propagation of turbulent bores generated by internal waves interacting with a complex surface creates high-frequency variabilities in the thermal and nutrient environment of Conch Reef in the Florida Keys, which has been studied previously. Here, I have created a three-dimensional model using ANSYS Fluent Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to …
Third-Order Harmonic Generation In Few-Layer Graphene, Nicholas T. Pereira, Timothy Chung, Joshua O. Island
Third-Order Harmonic Generation In Few-Layer Graphene, Nicholas T. Pereira, Timothy Chung, Joshua O. Island
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Optical harmonic generation is a phenomena that occurs in nonlinear materials and can be used to study the properties of those materials. For example, the nonlinear response of layered, two-dimensional (2D) materials can be used to characterize flake thickness, lattice and stacking symmetries, and crystal strain. Here, we study third harmonic generation (THG) in graphene and few-layer graphite as a precursor to investigating nonlinear optical properties of other 2D materials. We present a custom scanning setup for optical harmonic generation and present our results on few-layer flakes. These results provide a solid basis for future measurements of other new 2D …

We deployed a Slocum G3 glider fitted with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), a Conductivity-Temperature-Depth sensor (CTD), optics sensor channels, and a propeller on the Southeastern Florida shelf. The ADCP and CTD provide continuous measurements of Northern and Eastern current velocity components, salinity, temperature, and density, throughout the water column in a high-current environment. The optics sensor channels are able to provide measurements of chlorophyll concentrations, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and backscatter particle counts. Additionally, for one of the glider deployments, we deployed a Wirewalker wave-powered profiling platform system also fitted with an ADCP and a CTD in …
Thermocatalytic Plasma-Assisted Dry Reforming Of Methane Over Ni/Al2o3 Catalyst, Tyler Wong
Thermocatalytic Plasma-Assisted Dry Reforming Of Methane Over Ni/Al2o3 Catalyst, Tyler Wong
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Plasma catalysis is an advantageous approach that combines the effects of plasma with the enhancements of a catalyst. By utilizing a nickel catalyst in the plasma discharge zone of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), it can give an enhancement to the electrical field, boost microdischarges, and increase conversion and selectivity rates of CH4 and CO2 in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction.
Industrial application of nickel catalysts in DBD Plasma DRM process are limited by poor stability, which is caused by the sintering of active metal particles and coke deposition on the catalyst surface. In this work, …
Formulation Of Causality-Preserving Quantum Time Of Arrival Theory, Denny Lane B. Sombillo, Neris I. Sombillo
Formulation Of Causality-Preserving Quantum Time Of Arrival Theory, Denny Lane B. Sombillo, Neris I. Sombillo
Physics Faculty Publications
We revisit the quantum correction to the classical time of arrival to address the unphysical instantaneous arrival in the limit of zero initial momentum. In this study, we show that the vanishing of arrival time is due to the contamination of the causality-violating component of the initial wave packet. Motivated by this observation, we propose to update the temporal collapse mechanism in Galapon (2009) [18] to incorporate the removal of causality-violating spectra of the arrival time operator. We found that the quantum correction to the classical arrival time is still observed. Thus, our analysis validates that the correction is an …

We present gas-phase metallicity measurements for 583 emission line galaxies at 0.3 < z < 0.85, including 388 dwarf galaxies with log ( M ⋆ / M ⊙ ) < 9.5 , and explore the dependence of the metallicity on the stellar mass and star formation (SF) properties of the galaxies. Metallicities are determined through the measurement of emission lines in very deep (∼7 hr exposure) Keck/DEIMOS spectra taken primarily from the HALO7D survey. We measure metallicity with three strong-line calibrations (O3Hβ, R23, and O3O2) for the overall sample, as well as with the faint [Ne iii]λ3869 and [O iii]λ4363 emission lines for 112 and 17 galaxies where robust detections were possible. We construct mass-metallicity relations (MZR) for each calibration method, finding MZRs consistent with other strong-line results at comparable redshift, as well as with z ∼ 0 galaxies. We quantify the intrinsic scatter in the MZR as a function of mass, finding it increases with lower stellar mass. We also measure a weak but significant correlation between increased MZR scatter and higher specific star formation rate (SFR). We find a weak influence of SFR in the fundamental metallicity relation as well, with an SFR coefficient of α = 0.21. Finally, we use the flux ratios of the [O ii]λ λ 3727,3729 doublet to calculate gas electron density in ∼1000 galaxies with log ( M ⋆ / M ⊙ ) < 10.5 as a function of redshift. We measure low electron densities (n e ∼ 25 cm−3) for z < 1 galaxies, again consistent with z ≈ 0 conditions, but measure higher densities (n e ∼ 100 cm−3) at z > 1. These results all suggest that there is little evolution in star-forming interstellar medium conditions from z ∼ 1 to z = 0, confirmed with a more complete sample of low-mass galaxies than has previously been available in this redshift range.

The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here, we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition-rate Electron …

Renormalized Stress-Energy Tensor For Scalar Fields In Hartle-Hawking, Boulware, And Unruh States In The Reissner-Nordström Spacetime, Julio Arrechea, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill, Peter Taylor
Articles
In this paper, we consider a quantum scalar field propagating on the Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. We compute the renormalized stress-energy tensor for the field in the Hartle-Hawking, Boulware and Unruh states. When the field is in the Hartle-Hawking state, we renormalize using the recently developed “extended coordinate” prescription. This method, which relies on Euclidean techniques, is very fast and accurate. Once, we have renormalized in the Hartle-Hawking state, we compute the stress-energy tensor in the Boulware and Unruh states by leveraging the fact that the difference between stress-energy tensors in different quantum states is already finite. We consider a …

A Review On Possible Physical Meaning Of Elastic-Electromagnetic Mathematical Equivalences, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
It is known, despite special theory of relativity has been widely accepted, in our recent draft submitted to this journal it is shown that some experiments have been carried out suggesting superluminal wave propagation, which make Minkowski lightcone not valid anymore. Therefore, it seems worth to reconsider the connection between elastic wave and electromagnetic wave equations, as in their early development. In this paper we will start with Maxwell-Dirac isomorphism, then we will find its connection with elastic wave equations.

Rapid screening, detection and monitoring of viral infection is of critical importance, as exemplified by the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2, leading to the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. This is equally the case for the stages of patient convalescence as for the initial stages of infection, to understand the medium and long terms effects, as well as the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Optical spectroscopic techniques potentially offer an alternative to currently employed techniques of screening for the presence, or the response to infection. In this study, the ability of Raman spectroscopy to distinguish between samples of the serum of convalescent COVID-19 …

The UCNA Experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) uses
an electron spectrometer to observe angular correlations between the neutron spin and the momenta of beta particles emitted during the process of beta (β) decay. Combined with neutron lifetime measurements, these observations probe physics beyond the standard model. In recent years there has been an effort to modernize the equipment to reduce the physical limitations of the experiment. The new prototype helps to reduce error via use of silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) and the SiPMs also have a greater quantum efficiency than the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). However, there is …

We review the current status of Early Dark Energy (EDE) models proposed to resolve the “Hubble tension”, the discrepancy between “direct” measurements of the current expansion rate of the Universe and “indirect measurements” for which the values inferred rely on the Λ CDM cosmological model calibrated on early-universe data. EDE refers to a new form of dark energy active at early times (typically a scalar-field), that quickly dilutes away at a redshift close to matter-radiation equality. The role of EDE is to decrease the sound horizon by briefly contributing to the Hubble rate in the pre-recombination era. We summarize the …

The field of additive manufacturing (AM) has gained a significant amount of popularity due to the increasing need for more sustainable manufacturing techniques and the adaptive development of complex product geometries. The problem is that AM parts routinely exhibit flaws or weaknesses that affect functionality or performance. Over the years, surface treatments have been developed to compensate certain flaws or weaknesses in manufactured products. Combining surface treatments with the modularity of additive manufacturing could lead to more adaptable and creative improvements of product functions in the future. The current work evaluates the feasibility of pursuing a new research axis in …

Within the ΛCDM cosmology, dark matter haloes are composed of both a smooth component and a population of smaller gravitationally bound subhaloes. These components are often treated as a single halo when properties, such as density profiles, are extracted from simulations. Recent work has shown that density profiles change substantially when subhalo mass is excluded. In this paper, we expand on this result by analysing three specific host halo properties – concentration (cNFW), spin (λB), and shape (c/a) – when calculated only from the smooth component of the halo. This analysis …

The Hydrodynamic Performance Of Duck Feet For Submerged Swimming Resembles Oars Rather Than Delta-Wings, Gal Ribak, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
Waterfowl use webbed feet to swim underwater. It has been suggested that the triangular shape of the webbed foot functions as a lift-generating delta wing rather than a drag-generating oar. To test this idea, we studied the hydrodynamic characteristics of a diving duck’s (Aythya nyroca) foot. The foot’s time varying angles-of-attack (AoAs) during paddling were extracted from movies of ducks diving vertically in a water tank. Lift and drag coefficients of 3D-printed duck-foot models were measured as a function of AoA in a wind-tunnel; and the near-wake flow dynamics behind the foot model was characterized using particle image velocimetry (PIV) …

Thermodynamics And Kinetics Analyses Of Clc-Ec1 Dimerization Reaction In Lipid Bilayers, Taeho Lee
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The efforts of this thesis are directed towards understanding the thermodynamics and kinetics underlying the dimerization reaction of a chloride/proton antiporter membrane protein, CLC-ec1, in lipid membranes. Due to the inherent challenges of working with membrane proteins, thermodynamic and kinetic information for the protein association reactions in membranes has been historically limited. The research presented in this thesis demonstrates the technological advancements for these measurements in a model membrane protein system, thereby setting an important milestone for the field. Since CLC-ec1 dimerizes via a greasy, membrane embedded binding interface, the physical driving forces involved in this reaction were unknown. It …

Containing nearly billion of water with most of the subsurface being invisible because water is extremely difficult to penetrate using electromagnetic radiation, as is typically used by satellite measuring instruments. For this reason, most observations of the ocean have very low spatial-temporal coverage to get a broad capture of the ocean’s features. However, recent “dense but patchy” data have increased the availability of high-resolution – low spatial coverage observations. These novel data sets have motivated research into multi-scale data assimilation methods. Here, we demonstrate a new assimilation approach …
