Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
A search for microscopic black holes and string balls is presented, based on a data sample of pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12 fb−1. No excess of events with energetic multiparticle final states, typical of black hole production or of similar new physics processes, is observed. Given the agreement of the observations with the expected standard model background, which is dominated by QCD multijet production, 95% confidence level limits are set on the production of semiclassical or quantum black holes, or …

A measurement of the Λ0 lifetime using the decay Λ0 → J/ψΛ in proton- √ b b proton collisions at s = 7 TeV is presented. The data set, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 5 fb−1, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using triggers that selected dimuon events in the J/ψ mass region. The Λ0 lifetime is measured to be 1.503 ± 0.052 (stat.) ± 0.031 (syst.) ps.
Understanding Proton Spin Structure Through Polarized P+P Collisions At 200 Gev At Star, Stephen Place
Understanding Proton Spin Structure Through Polarized P+P Collisions At 200 Gev At Star, Stephen Place
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Measurements of spin observables at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory provide unique insight into the contribution of a proton's constituents to its spin. The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) is sensitive to the proton spin from polarized proton-proton collisions. One of the primary products of these collisions are neutral pions, (π0) which decay into two photons. The photons are reconstructed in the endcap electro-magnetic calorimeter of STAR, and are used to reconstruct the π0 and its properties. Measurements of both the longitudinal and transverse spin asymmetries in the production of π0 from data taken in 2006 …
Understanding Azimuthal Angular Resolutions In P + P → Jet + X And P + P → Jet + Π + X At √S = 500 Gev At Star, Jacob Long
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Measurements of particle production from polarized-proton collisions at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) give insight into proton spin structure. One way that spin effects are analyzed in these collisions is through the calculation of spin-dependent asymmetries in the final-state particles. The large angular acceptance of the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) allows the reconstruction of full jets in addition to inclusive hadron production. Analyzing spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in p + p → jet + X and p + p → jet + π + X allows one to isolate contributions from the Sivers and Collins effects. Understanding …

The detection of the primordial B-mode spectrum of the polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal may provide a probe of inflation. However, observation of such a faint signal requires excellent control of systematic errors. Interferometry proves to be a promising approach for overcoming such a challenge. In this paper we present a complete simulation pipeline of interferometric observations of CMB polarization, including systematic errors. We employ two different methods for obtaining the power spectra from mock data produced by simulated observations: the maximum likelihood method and the method of Gibbs sampling. We show that the results from both methods …

Topics In Electromagnetic, Acoustic, And Potential Scattering Theory, Umaporn Nuntaplook
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
With recent renewed interest in the classical topics of both acoustic and electromagnetic aspects for nano-technology, transformation optics, fiber optics, metamaterials with negative refractive indices, cloaking and invisibility, the topic of time-independent scattering theory in quantum mechanics is becoming a useful field to re-examine in the above contexts. One of the key areas of electromagnetic theory scattering of plane electromagnetic waves — is based on the properties of the refractive indices in the various media. It transpires that the refractive index of a medium and the potential in quantum scattering theory are intimately related. In many cases, understanding such scattering …
Characterization Of Microwave Discharge Plasmas For Surface Processing, Milka Nikolic
Characterization Of Microwave Discharge Plasmas For Surface Processing, Milka Nikolic
Physics Theses & Dissertations
We have developed several diagnostic techniques to characterize two types of microwave (MW) discharge plasmas: a supersonic flowing argon MW discharge maintained in a cylindrical quartz cavity at frequency ƒ = 2.45 GHz and a pulse repetitive MW discharge in air at ƒ = 9.5 GHz. Low temperature MW discharges have been proven to posses attractive properties for plasma cleaning and etching of niobium surfaces of superconductive radio frequency (SRF) cavities. Plasma based surface modification technologies offer a promising alternative for etching and cleaning of SRF cavities. These technologies are low cost, environmentally friendly and easily controllable, and present a …
Self-Completeness And Spontaneous Dimensional Reduction, Jonas R. Mureika, Piero Nicolini
Self-Completeness And Spontaneous Dimensional Reduction, Jonas R. Mureika, Piero Nicolini
Physics Faculty Works
A viable quantum theory of gravity is one of the biggest challenges physicists are facing. We discuss the confluence of two highly expected features which might be instrumental in the quest of a finite and renormalizable quantum gravity —spontaneous dimensional reduction and self-completeness. The former suggests the spacetime background at the Planck scale may be effectively two-dimensional, while the latter implies a condition of maximal compression of matter by the formation of an event horizon for Planckian scattering. We generalize such a result to an arbitrary number of dimensions, and show that gravity in higher than four dimensions remains self-complete, …

Why A 15 Minute Biological Detection System?, Doug Lewis
Faculty Publications
The biological defense community needs to take a hard look at the requirements and assumptions we use to develop our biological sensors. Today the point sensors currently deployed or in development can offer at best “near real time” detection. This translates into approximately 10-20 minutes from the time an agent passes over the device until an alarm is issued. Why are we working to develop detection hardware which in reality contributes little to no advantage to an operational environment? Should the DOD resist fielding (in the near term) “near real time” detection systems, and instead field slower (but much more …

Field Emission Studies Toward Improving The Performance Of Dc High Voltage Photoelectron Guns, Mahzad Bastaninejad
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Field emission is the main mechanism that prevents DC high voltage photoemission electron guns from operating at the very high bias voltages required to produce low emittance beams. Gas conditioning is shown to eliminate field emission from cathode electrodes used inside DC high voltage photoelectron guns. Measurements and simulation results indicate that gas conditioning eliminates field emission from cathode electrodes via two mechanisms: sputtering and implantation, with the benefits of implantation reversed by heating the electrode. The field emission characteristics of 5 stainless steel electrodes varied significantly upon the initial application of voltage but improved to nearly the same level …

Physics Faculty Publications
We report measurements of the third harmonic coefficient of the azimuthal anisotropy, v3, known as triangular flow. The analysis is for charged particles in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV, based on data from the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Two-particle correlations as a function of their pseudorapidity separation are fit with narrow and wide Gaussians. Measurements of triangular flow are extracted from the wide Gaussian, from two-particle cumulants with a pseudorapidity gap, and also from event plane analysis methods with a large pseudorapidity gap between the particles and the event plane. These results are …

On The Feasibility Of Detecting Spacecraft Charging And Arcing By Remote Sensing, Dale C. Ferguson, Jeremy Murray-Krezan, David A. Barton, Jr Dennison
Conference Proceedings
t is a sad fact that more than 50 years after the dawn of the space age, most spacecraft still do not have sensors onboard capable of detecting whether they are at potentials likely to put them at risk of severe charging and the concomitant arcing, or indeed, even capable of detecting when or if they undergo arcing. As a result, anomaly resolution has often been hit or miss, and false diagnoses are probably common. Until spacecraft are routinely launched with charging and arcing monitors, the best that can be achieved is detection through remote sensing, from the ground or …

Rayleigh lidar technology opened the middle atmosphere (from 30–90 km) to ground-based observations. The upgraded system at the Atmospheric Lidar Observatory (ALO) on the campus of Utah State University (41.74, 111.81) has shown that these ground-based observations can be extended to 109 km, with the goal of reaching 120 km. The resultant study of short and long-term temperature trends, using Rayleigh lidar, contributes immensely to the overall understanding of the properties and dominant physical processes in the middle atmosphere and Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region. Temperature variations on short time scales, from minutes to days, give insight into the effects of …

Graduate Student Posters
Observations of mesospheric OH(6,2) rotational temperatures by the Utah State University Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (MTM) located at the Andes Lidar Observatory, Cerro Pachon, Chile (30.3°S, 70.7°S) reveal a large range of nightly variations induced by atmospheric gravity waves and tides, as well as strong seasonal oscillations. This study investigates MTM temperature variability over the past 3.5 years comprising over 800 nights of high-quality data and compares the results with ground-based spectrometric measurements from nearby El Leoncito Observatory, Argentina, Maui-MALT, Hawaii MTM measurements (2001-2005) and coincident mesospheric temperature measurement by SABER on the NASA TIMED satellite.
