Beam asymmetries for the reactions ˠp -> pπ0 and ˠp -> nπ+have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged, linearly polarized photon beam with energies from 1.102-1.862 GeV. A Fourier moment technique for extracting beam asymmetries from experimental data is described. The results reported here possess greater precision and finer energy resolution than previous measurements. Our data for both pion reactions appear to favor the SAID and Bonn-Gatchina scattering analyses over the older Mainz MAID predictions. After incorporating the present set of beam asymmetries into the world database, exploratory fits made with …
Robust Control Methods For Nonlinear Systems With Uncertain Dynamics And Unknown Control Direction, Chau T. Ton
Robust Control Methods For Nonlinear Systems With Uncertain Dynamics And Unknown Control Direction, Chau T. Ton
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Robust nonlinear control design strategies using sliding mode control (SMC) and integral SMC (ISMC) are developed, which are capable of achieving reliable and accurate tracking control for systems containing dynamic uncertainty, unmodeled disturbances, and actuator anomalies that result in an unknown and time-varying control direction. In order to ease readability of this dissertation, detailed explanations of the relevant mathematical tools is provided, including stability denitions, Lyapunov-based stability analysis methods, SMC and ISMC fundamentals, and other basic nonlinear control tools. The contributions of the dissertation are three novel control algorithms for three different classes of nonlinear systems: single-input multiple output (SIMO) …
Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price
Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The motion of rigid bodies includes three degrees of freedom (DOF) for rotation, generally referred to as roll, pitch and yaw, and 3 DOF for translation, generally described as motion along the x, y and z axis, for a total of 6 DOF. Many complex mechanical systems exhibit this type of motion, with constraints, such as complex humanoid robotic systems, multiple ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), multiple spacecraft vehicles, and even quantum mechanical systems. These motions historically have been analyzed independently, with separate control algorithms being developed for rotation and translation. The goal of this research is to study …

Raman and Infrared absorption spectroscopies are compared for the analysis of human hand skin tissue sections. The tissue sections have been formalin fixed and paraffin processed, and subsequently dewaxed. Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectra are preprocessed using the resonant Mie – extended multiplicative scattering algorithm to remove spectral artefacts. FTIR images of resolution 4cm-1, analysed using K-means cluster analysis, reveal the double layer structure of the dermis and epidermis, but no further layer differentiation is achieved using the higher spatial resolution of the Attenuated Total Reflection imaging or improved spectral resolution of 2cm-1. At comparable spectral …

Understanding the interaction of anticancer drugs with model cell lines is important to elucidate the mode of action of these drugs as well as to develop cost effective and rapid screening methods. Raman spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be a valuable technique for high throughput, noninvasive analysis. The interaction of vincristine with a human lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549)was investigated using Raman micro spectroscopy. The results were correlated with parallel measurements from the MTT cytotoxicity assay, which yielded an IC50 value of 0.10 ± 0.03 μM. The Raman spectral data acquired from vincristine treated A549 cells was analysed to …

In biological media, nanoparticles acquire a coating of biomolecules (proteins, lipids, polysaccharides) from their surroundings, which reduces their surface energy and confers a biological identity to the particles. This adsorbed layer is the interface between the nanomaterial and living systems and therefore plays a significant role in determining the fate and behaviour of the nanoparticles. This review summarises the state of the art in terms of understanding the bio-nano interface and provides direction for potential future research directions and some recommendations for future priorities and strategies to support the safe implementation of nanotechnologies. The central premise is that nanomaterials must …
An Effective Field Theory Calculation Of N(P, D)Γ Cross-Section For Big Bang Nucleo-Synthesis, Rasha Adnan Kamand
An Effective Field Theory Calculation Of N(P, D)Γ Cross-Section For Big Bang Nucleo-Synthesis, Rasha Adnan Kamand
Theses and Dissertations
Studying the nuclear reaction n(p,d)γ and calculating its cross-section is not only a matter of interest from theoretical particle physics point of view but also from the viewpoint of cosmology. We now know that the universe is made up of only 5% baryonic matter. So, computing the density of baryons is of particular importance to physicists in general and cosmologists in particular. Deuterium production during Big Bang Nucleo-synthesis (BBN) is very sensitive to the density of baryons, thus baryon density can be inferred from the abundance of deuterium. In order to calculate deuterium abundance one needs to use the cross-section …
Quantifying The Impact Of Various Radioactive Background Sources On Germanium-76 Zero-Neutrino-Double-Beta-Decay Experiments, Katarina Leila Mizouni
Quantifying The Impact Of Various Radioactive Background Sources On Germanium-76 Zero-Neutrino-Double-Beta-Decay Experiments, Katarina Leila Mizouni
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of searching for 0vBB-decay is to probe an absolute neutrino mass scale suggested by the mass-splitting parameters observed by neutrino oscillation experiments. Furthermore, observation of 0vBB-decay is an explicit instance of lepton-number non-conservation. To detect the rare events such as 0vBB-decay, half-lives of the order of 10^25-10^27 years have to be probed. Using an active detector with a large volume, such as hundreds of kilograms of HPGe in the case of MAJORANA, and taking efficient measures to mitigate background of cosmic and primordial origins are necessary for the success of a sensitive 0vBB-decay experiment.
One focus of the …

Depairing Current Density In Cuprate Superconductors, Manlai Liang
Depairing Current Density In Cuprate Superconductors, Manlai Liang
Theses and Dissertations
We report a study of the depairing critical current density in the electron-doped infinite-layer Sr1-xLaxCuO2 and Nd2-xCexCuO4-\delta system. In this work, many new apparatuses were set up to measure the samples. Resistance-versus-temperature transition curves measured at high pulsed current densities show the classic proportionality between the transition-temperature shift and the two-thirds power of the applied current. The measurement provides an assessment of the superfluid density in the system, and a secondary route for obtaining the penetration depth purely through a transport measurements.
Nanoparticle Self-Assembly And Ultrafast Nanomagnet Switching Dynamics, Longfei Ye
Nanoparticle Self-Assembly And Ultrafast Nanomagnet Switching Dynamics, Longfei Ye
Theses and Dissertations
A novel manufacturing technology that offers a low-cost alternative for creating more complex optical materials that are assembled with single-nanometer precision is demonstrated. Using the enormous magnetic field gradients present near the surface of magnetic recording media, colloidally suspended superparamagnetic nanopartilces are self-assembled into patterned microstructures.
The position and shape of these microstructures are precisely controlled by magnetic patterns on the template. The template that can be reprogrammed and reused is magnetically recorded using commercial magnetic recording technology. These microstructures consisting entirely of self-assembled magnetic nanoparticles are then transferred to flexible polymer thin films with patterns maintained. In particular, all-nanoparticle …

Stochastic Charge Transport In Multi-Island Single-Electron Tunneling Devices, Madhusudan A. Savaikar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The physics of the operation of singe-electron tunneling devices (SEDs) and singe-electron tunneling transistors (SETs), especially of those with multiple nanometer-sized islands, has remained poorly understood in spite of some intensive experimental and theoretical research. This computational study examines the current-voltage (IV) characteristics of multi-island single-electron devices using a newly developed multi-island transport simulator (MITS) that is based on semi-classical tunneling theory and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. The dependence of device characteristics on physical device parameters is explored, and the physical mechanisms that lead to the Coulomb blockade (CB) and Coulomb staircase (CS) characteristics are proposed.

Magneto-Photonic Crystals For Optical Sensing Applications, Neluka Dissanayake
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Among the optical structures investigated for optical sensing purpose, a significant amount of research has been conducted on photonic crystal based sensors. A particular advantage of photonic crystal based sensors is that they show superior sensitivity for ultra-small volume sensing. In this study we investigate polarization changes in response to the changes in the cover index of magneto-optic active photonic band gap structures. One-dimensional photonic-band gap structures fabricated on iron garnet materials yield large polarization rotations at the band gap edges. The enhanced polarization effects serve as an excellent tool for chemical sensing showing high degree of sensitivity for photonic …
Investigations Of Cloud Microphysical Response To Mixing Using Digital Holography, Matthew Jacob Beals
Investigations Of Cloud Microphysical Response To Mixing Using Digital Holography, Matthew Jacob Beals
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Cloud edge mixing plays an important role in the life cycle and development of clouds. Entrainment of subsaturated air affects the cloud at the microscale, altering the number density and size distribution of its droplets. The resulting effect is determined by two timescales: the time required for the mixing event to complete, and the time required for the droplets to adjust to their new environment. If mixing is rapid, evaporation of droplets is uniform and said to be homogeneous in nature. In contrast, slow mixing (compared to the adjustment timescale) results in the droplets adjusting to the transient state of …

Compact binary systems with neutron stars or black holes are one of the most promising sources for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Gravitational radiation encodes rich information about source physics; thus parameter estimation and model selection are crucial analysis steps for any detection candidate events. Detailed models of the anticipated waveforms enable inference on several parameters, such as component masses, spins, sky location and distance, that are essential for new astrophysical studies of these sources. However, accurate measurements of these parameters and discrimination of models describing the underlying physics are complicated by artifacts in the data, uncertainties in the waveform models and …

Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Modeling Of A Laboratory Scale Coal Gasifier, Kiel S. Schultheiss
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Furthering gasification technology is an essential part of advancing clean coal technologies. In order to seek insight into the appropriate operations for the formation of synthetic gas (syngas) a numerical simulation was performed to predict the phenomena of coal gasification in a laboratory scale entrained-flow coal gasifier. The mesh for the model was developed with ICEM CFD software and the chemical and physical phenomena were modeled using the fluid flow solver ANSYS FLUENT. Mesh independence was verified. The model was validated with experimental data from several studies performed on a laboratory scale gasifier.
Systematic examination of the model was performed …
