Equivalence Of Classical And Quantum Codes, Tefjol Pllaha Jan 2019

Equivalence Of Classical And Quantum Codes, Tefjol Pllaha

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In classical and quantum information theory there are different types of error-correcting codes being used. We study the equivalence of codes via a classification of their isometries. The isometries of various codes over Frobenius alphabets endowed with various weights typically have a rich and predictable structure. On the other hand, when the alphabet is not Frobenius the isometry group behaves unpredictably. We use character theory to develop a duality theory of partitions over Frobenius bimodules, which is then used to study the equivalence of codes. We also consider instances of codes over non-Frobenius alphabets and establish their isometry groups. Secondly, …

Lattice Simplices: Sufficiently Complicated, Brian Davis Jan 2019

Lattice Simplices: Sufficiently Complicated, Brian Davis

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Simplices are the "simplest" examples of polytopes, and yet they exhibit much of the rich and subtle combinatorics and commutative algebra of their more general cousins. In this way they are sufficiently complicated --- insights gained from their study can inform broader research in Ehrhart theory and associated fields.

In this dissertation we consider two previously unstudied properties of lattice simplices; one algebraic and one combinatorial. The first is the Poincar\'e series of the associated semigroup algebra, which is substantially more complicated than the Hilbert series of that same algebra. The second is the partial ordering of the elements of …

Boundary Layers In Periodic Homogenization, Jinping Zhuge Jan 2019

Boundary Layers In Periodic Homogenization, Jinping Zhuge

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

The boundary layer problems in periodic homogenization arise naturally from the quantitative analysis of convergence rates. Formally they are second-order linear elliptic systems with periodically oscillating coefficient matrix, subject to periodically oscillating Dirichelt or Neumann boundary data. In this dissertation, for either Dirichlet problem or Neumann problem, we establish the homogenization results and obtain the nearly sharp convergence rates, provided the domain is strictly convex. Also, we show that the homogenized boundary data is in W1,p for any p ∈ (1,∞), which implies the Cα-Hölder continuity for any α ∈ (0,1).

Undergraduate Mathematics Students’ Connections Between Their Group Homomorphism And Linear Transformation Concept Images, Jeffrey Slye Jan 2019

Undergraduate Mathematics Students’ Connections Between Their Group Homomorphism And Linear Transformation Concept Images, Jeffrey Slye

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

It is well documented that undergraduate students struggle with the more formal and abstract concepts of vector space theory in a first course on linear algebra. Some of these students continue on to classes in abstract algebra, where they learn about algebraic structures such as groups. It is clear to the seasoned mathematician that vector spaces are in fact groups, and so linear transformations are group homomorphisms with extra restrictions. This study explores the question of whether or not students see this connection as well. In addition, I probe the ways in which students’ stated understandings are the same or …

An Inverse Eigenvalue Problem For The Schrödinger Equation On The Unit Ball Of R3, Maryam Ali Al Ghafli Jan 2019

An Inverse Eigenvalue Problem For The Schrödinger Equation On The Unit Ball Of R3, Maryam Ali Al Ghafli

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

The inverse eigenvalue problem for a given operator is to determine the coefficients by using knowledge of its eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. These are determined by the behavior of the solutions on the domain boundaries. In our problem, the Schrödinger operator acting on functions defined on the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^3$ has a radial potential taken from $L^2_{\mathbb{R}}[0,1].$ Hence the set of the eigenvalues of this problem is the union of the eigenvalues of infinitely many Sturm-Liouville operators on $[0,1]$ with the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Each Sturm-Liouville operator corresponds to an angular momentum $l =0,1,2....$. In this research we focus on …

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems For Riemann-Liouville Fractional Differential Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda Jan 2019

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems For Riemann-Liouville Fractional Differential Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We apply the quasilinearization method to a Dirichlet boundary value problem and to a right focal boundary value problem for a RiemannLiouville fractional differential equation. First, we sue the method of upper and lower solutions to obtain the uniqueness of solutions of the Dirichlet boundary value problem. Next, we apply a suitable fixed point theorem to establish the existence of solutions. We develop a quasilinearization algorithm and construct sequences of approximate solutions that converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem. Two examples are exhibited to illustrate the main result for the Dirichlet boundary value …

The Large Contraction Principle And Existence Of Periodic Solutions For Infinite Delay Volterra Difference Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda, Youssef Raffoul Jan 2019

The Large Contraction Principle And Existence Of Periodic Solutions For Infinite Delay Volterra Difference Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda, Youssef Raffoul

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of a nonlinear infinite delay Volterra difference equation. (See paper for equation.)

We employ a Krasnosel’skii type fixed point theorem, originally proved by Burton. The primary sufficient condition is not verifiable in terms of the parameters of the difference equation, and so we provide three applications in which the primary sufficient condition is verified.

Avery Fixed Point Theorem Applied To A Hammerstein Integral Equation, Paul W. Eloe, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer Jan 2019

Avery Fixed Point Theorem Applied To A Hammerstein Integral Equation, Paul W. Eloe, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Abstract. We apply a recent Avery et al. fixed point theorem to the Hammerstein integral equation (see paper for equation). Under certain conditions on G, we show the existence of positive and positive symmetric solutions. Examples are given where G is a convolution kernel and where G is a Green’s function associated with different boundary-value problem.

Numeracy

Ethan D. Bolker and Maura B. Mast. 2016. Common Sense Mathematics.(Washington DC.: Mathematics Association of America) ISBN-13: 978-1-93951-210-9.

Common Sense Mathematics is an integrative quantitative reasoning (QR) textbook that is built around scores of exercises derived from authentic circumstances from public media and other public sources. The exercises elicit responses from students requiring extensive communication and analyses and distinguish the book from ones typically encountered in a mathematics or science course. Responses to exercises often require one-half page or more of writing and can occupy considerable class time in discussion. The book has material for a one- or two-semester …

Eigenvalues And Approximation Numbers, Ryan Chakmak Jan 2019

Eigenvalues And Approximation Numbers, Ryan Chakmak

CMC Senior Theses

While the spectral theory of compact operators is known to many, knowledge regarding the relationship between eigenvalues and approximation numbers might be less known. By examining these numbers in tandem, one may develop a link between eigenvalues and l^p spaces. In this paper, we develop the background of this connection with in-depth examples.

Surface Waves Over Currents And Uneven Bottom, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin, Michail D. Todorov Jan 2019

Surface Waves Over Currents And Uneven Bottom, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin, Michail D. Todorov

Articles

The propagation of surface water waves interacting with a current and an uneven bottom is studied. Such a situation is typical for ocean waves where the winds generate currents in the top layer of the ocean. The role of the bottom topography is taken into account since it also influences the local wave and current patterns. Specific scaling of the variables is selected which leads to approximations of Boussinesq and KdV types. The arising KdV equation with variable coefficients, dependent on the bottom topography, is studied numerically when the initial condition is in the form of the one soliton solution …

Riemann-Hilbert Problem, Integrability And Reductions, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Aleksander Stefanov

Articles

Abstract. The present paper is dedicated to integrable models with Mikhailov reduction groups GR ≃ Dh. Their Lax representation allows us to prove, that their solution is equivalent to solving Riemann-Hilbert problems, whose contours depend on the realization of the GR-action on the spectral parameter. Two new examples of Nonlinear Evolution Equations (NLEE) with Dh symmetries are presented.

Does It Take Three To Dance The Tango? Organizational Design, Triadic Structures And Boundary Spanning Across Subunits, Stefano Tasselli, Alberto Caimo Jan 2019

Does It Take Three To Dance The Tango? Organizational Design, Triadic Structures And Boundary Spanning Across Subunits, Stefano Tasselli, Alberto Caimo

Articles

In this paper, we investigate the processes of boundary spanning across subunits within organizational networks. We hypothesize that patterns of advice across organizational subunits are explained by different triadic mechanisms depending on the organizational design of the intra-organizational network. In organizational networks characterized by flat hierarchy, we found triadic cyclic closure to be positively associated to boundary spanning across subunits; but when the network reflects an organizational structure with formal hierarchical differentiation among members, then we found triadic transitive closure to be associated to boundary spanning across subunits. We test these predictions in two empirical studies consisting of two organizational …

On The Cosmological Models With Matter Creation, Emil M. Prodanov, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2019

On The Cosmological Models With Matter Creation, Emil M. Prodanov, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

The matter creation model of Prigogine--Géhéniau--Gunzig--Nardone is revisited in terms of a redefined creation pressure which does not lead to irreversible adiabatic evolution at constant specific entropy. With the resulting freedom to choose a particular gas process, a flat FRWL cosmological model is proposed based on three input characteristics: (i) a perfect fluid comprising of an ideal gas, (ii) a quasi-adiabatic polytropic process, and (iii) a particular rate of particle creation. Such model leads to the description of the late-time acceleration of the expanding Universe with a natural transition from decelerating to accelerating regime. Only the Friedmann equations and the …

On The Time-Evolution Of Resonant Triads In Rotational Capillary-Gravity Water Waves, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin Jan 2019

On The Time-Evolution Of Resonant Triads In Rotational Capillary-Gravity Water Waves, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin

Articles

We investigate an effect of the resonant interaction in the case of one-directional propagation of capillary-gravity surface waves arising as the free surface of a rotational water flow. Specifically, we assume a constant vorticity in the body of the fluid which physically corresponds to an underlying current with a linear horizontal velocity profile. We consider the interaction of three distinct modes and we obtain the dynamic equations for a resonant triad. Setting the constant vorticity equal to zero we recover the well known integrable three-wave system.

Benjamin-Ono Model Of An Internal Wave Under A Flat Surface, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2019

Benjamin-Ono Model Of An Internal Wave Under A Flat Surface, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

A two-layer uid system separated by a pycnocline in the form of an internal wave is considered. The lower layer is infinitely deep, with a higher density than the upper layer which is bounded above by a at surface. The uids are incompressible and inviscid. A Hamiltonian formulation for the dynamics in the presence of a depth-varying current is presented and it is shown that an appropriate scaling leads to the integrable Benjamin-Ono equation.

Procuring Pediatric Vaccines In A Two-Economy Duopoly, Seongeun Lee, Susan E. Martonosi Jan 2019

Procuring Pediatric Vaccines In A Two-Economy Duopoly, Seongeun Lee, Susan E. Martonosi

Scripps Senior Theses

In this work, we aim to present an optimization model for vaccine pricing in a two-economy duopoly. This model observes the price dynamics between a high income country and a low income country that procure vaccinations through PAHO. This model is formulated to provide insights on optimal pricing strategy for PAHO to ultimately increase vaccine accessibility to low income countries. The objective is to satisfy the public demand at the lowest price possible, while providing enough profit for the vaccine manufacturers to stay in business. Using non-linear integer programming, the model results show that cross-subsidization occurs in PAHO vaccine procurement.

Predictive Factors Of Student Mathematics Achievement Decline Between Third And Fifth Grade, Jean E. Salters Jan 2019

Predictive Factors Of Student Mathematics Achievement Decline Between Third And Fifth Grade, Jean E. Salters

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Low math achievement among elementary school students is a concern because students who lack a strong early foundation in mathematics may experience difficulty learning in future mathematics classes. Students in 2 rural southeastern school districts demonstrated low math achievement in 5th grade and their scores declined from 3rd to 5th grade. In this quantitative study, teacher-related factors that research has shown to predict student achievement were examined using Bandura's theory of self-efficacy and Ball and McDiarmid's emerging theory of subject matter content knowledge. The research question asked whether the teacher factors, years of teaching experience, hours of professional development in …

Charged Nanoparticles Quench The Propulsion Of Active Janus Colloids, Marola W. Issa, Nicky R. Baumgartner, Mohammed A. Kalil, Shawn D. Ryan, Christopher L. Wirth Jan 2019

Charged Nanoparticles Quench The Propulsion Of Active Janus Colloids, Marola W. Issa, Nicky R. Baumgartner, Mohammed A. Kalil, Shawn D. Ryan, Christopher L. Wirth

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Active colloidal particles regularly interact with surfaces in applications ranging from microfluidics to sensing. Recent work has revealed the complex nature of these surface interactions for active particles. Herein, we summarize experiments and simulations that show the impact of charged nanoparticles on the propulsion of an active colloid near a boundary. Adding charged nanoparticles not only decreased the average separation distance of a passive colloid because of depletion attraction as expected but also decreased the apparent propulsion of a Janus colloid to near zero. Complementary agentbased simulations considering the impact of hydrodynamics for active Janus colloids were conducted in the …

Ε-Superposition And Truncation Dimensions In Average And Probabilistic Settings For ∞-Variate Linear Problems, Jonathan M. Dingess Jan 2019

Ε-Superposition And Truncation Dimensions In Average And Probabilistic Settings For ∞-Variate Linear Problems, Jonathan M. Dingess

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

This thesis is a representation of my contribution to the paper of the same name I co-author with Dr. Wasilkowski. It deals with linear problems defined on γ-weighted normed spaces of functions with infinitely many variables. In particular, I describe methods and discuss results for ε-truncation and ε-superposition methods. I show through these results that the ε-truncation and ε-superposition dimensions are small under modest error demand ε. These positive results are derived for product weights and the so-called anchored decomposition.

Equivalence Between Uniform L²⋆(Ω) A-Priori Bounds And Uniform L∞(Ω) A-Priori Bounds For Subcritical Elliptic Equations, A. Castro, Nsoki Mavinga, R. Pardo

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We provide sufficient conditions for a uniform L²⋆(Ω) bound to imply a uniform L∞(Ω) bound for positive classical solutions to a class of subcritical elliptic problems in bounded C² domains in Rᴺ. We also establish an equivalent result for sequences of boundary value problems.

Schur's Lemma For Coupled Reducibility And Coupled Normality, D. Lahat, C. Jutten, Helene Shapiro

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

Let $\mathcal A = \{A_{ij} \}_{i, j \in \mathcal I}$, where $\mathcal I$ is an index set, be a doubly indexed family of matrices, where $A_{ij}$ is $n_i \times n_j$. For each $i \in \mathcal I$, let $\mathcal V_i$ be an $n_i$-dimensional vector space. We say $\mathcal A$ is reducible in the coupled sense if there exist subspaces, $\mathcal U_i \subseteq \mathcal V_i$, with $\mathcal U_i \neq \{0\}$ for at least one $i \in \mathcal I$, and $\mathcal U_i \neq \mathcal V_i$ for at least one $i$, such that $A_{ij} (\mathcal U_j) \subseteq \mathcal U_i$ for all $i, j$. Let …

Revisiting The Isoperimetric Graph Partitioning Problem, Sravan Danda, Aditya Challa, B. S. Daya Sagar, Laurent Najman Jan 2019

Revisiting The Isoperimetric Graph Partitioning Problem, Sravan Danda, Aditya Challa, B. S. Daya Sagar, Laurent Najman

Journal Articles

Isoperimetric graph partitioning, which is also known as the Cheeger cut, is NP-hard in its original form. In the literature, multiple modifications to this problem have been proposed to obtain approximation algorithms for clustering applications. In the context of image segmentation, a heuristic continuous relaxation to this problem introduced by Leo Grady and Eric L. Schwartz has yielded good quality results. This algorithm is based on solving a linear system of equations involving the Laplacian of the image graph. Furthermore, the same algorithm applied to a maximum spanning tree (MST) of the image graph was shown to produce similar results …

Assimilating Mathematical Thinking To The Learning Of Shadows, Taheeda Shwana Street-Conaway

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study focuses on a teaching experiment with 33 six-graders in a Kearny public school in Hudson County, New Jersey, during the 2017-2018 academic year. More specifically, this study explored a) the types of tasks and tools that can be used to develop students’ covariational and correspondence reasoning in learning about shadows and b) the nature of students’ reasoning about covariation and correspondence relationships as students engage in the use of tools and tasks. The results showed that the simulation and the tasks I designed had the students engaged in the learning process. Students were able to reason about the …

Dedekind Sums: Properties And Applications To Number Theory And Lattice Point Enumeration, Oliver Meldrum Jan 2019

Dedekind Sums: Properties And Applications To Number Theory And Lattice Point Enumeration, Oliver Meldrum

Honors Papers

In this paper, we will explore the origins, applications, and properties of these sums and one of their generalizations. We seek to explain what these sums represent and how they behave by exploring some of their arithmetic properties. In addition, we hope to show the reader why one should care about these sums. We do this by presenting two important areas in which these sums appear: number theory and the study of enumerating lattice points inside of polytopes.

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions Of Partially Ordered Sets, Nate Lesnevich Jan 2019

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions Of Partially Ordered Sets, Nate Lesnevich

Honors Theses

We find necessary and separate sufficient conditions for the difference between two labeled partially ordered set's (poset) partition generating functions to be positive in the fundamental basis. We define the notion of a jump sequence for a poset and show how different conditions on the jump sequences of two posets are necessary for those posets to have an order relation in the fundamental basis. Our sufficient conditions are of two types. First, we show how manipulating a poset's Hasse diagram produces a poset that is greater according to the fundamental basis. Secondly, we also provide tools to explain posets that …

Mean Value Theorems For Riemannian Manifolds Via The Obstacle Problem, Brian Benson, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We develop some of the basic theory for the obstacle problem on Riemannian manifolds, and we use it to establish a mean value theorem. Our mean value theorem works for a very wide class of Riemannian manifolds and has no weights at all within the integral.
