The Spectral Expansion For The Hahn-Dirac System On The Whole Line, Bi̇lender Paşaoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Tuna Jan 2019

The Spectral Expansion For The Hahn-Dirac System On The Whole Line, Bi̇lender Paşaoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Tuna

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider the singular Hahn-Dirac system defined by $ -\frac{1}{q}D_{-\omega q^{-1},q^{-1}}y_{2}+p\left( x\right) y_{1} =\lambda y_{1}, $ $D_{\omega,q}y_{1}+r\left( x\right) y_{2} & =\lambda y_{2}, $ where $\lambda$ is a complex spectral parameter and $p$ and $r$ are real-valued functions defined on $(-\infty,\infty)$ and continuous at $\omega_{0}$. We prove the existence of a spectral function for such a system. We also prove the Parseval equality and the spectral expansion formula in terms of the spectral function for this system on the whole line.

Uncountably Many Nonoscillatory Bounded Solutions To Second-Order Nonlinear Neutral Dynamic Equations, Magdalena Nockowska Rosiak Jan 2019

Uncountably Many Nonoscillatory Bounded Solutions To Second-Order Nonlinear Neutral Dynamic Equations, Magdalena Nockowska Rosiak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This work is devoted to the study of the existence of uncountably many nonoscillatory bounded solutions to second-order nonlinear neutral dynamic equations by means of the Darbo fixed point theorem. We construct assumptions without sign conditions on the nonlinear part of the equation. Moreover, we prove the necessary condition for the existence of an asymptotically zero solution to the problem under consideration.

Gait And Postural Analysis In Healthy Young Adults And People With Parkinson's Disease, Aisha Joy Chen Jan 2019

Gait And Postural Analysis In Healthy Young Adults And People With Parkinson's Disease, Aisha Joy Chen

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Postural analysis is the study of how the position of the body in any mode interacts with internal and external forces. This type of analysis is typically used to assess potential abnormalities in the balance control system and to understand how the balance control system changes with time. However, compared to other medical fields of study, postural analysis is relatively new [1]. In fact, although widely used in clinical and research studies, postural assessment methods are scientifically inaccurate, and some data collection methods are relatively expensive. A better understanding of the human balance control system could lead to more accurate …

Zeros Of The Dedekind Zeta-Function, Mashael Alsharif Jan 2019

Zeros Of The Dedekind Zeta-Function, Mashael Alsharif

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

H. L. Montgomery proved a formula for sums over two sets of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis, he used this formula and Fourier analysis to prove an estimate for the proportion of simple zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. We prove a generalization of his formula for the nontrivial zeros of the Dedekind zeta-function of a Galois number field, and use this formula and Fourier analysis to prove an estimate for the proportion of distinct zeros, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.

Teachers' Perceptions About Instructing Underachieving K-5 Students On Mathematical Word Problem-Solving, Crystal Yvette Baldwindouglas Jan 2019

Teachers' Perceptions About Instructing Underachieving K-5 Students On Mathematical Word Problem-Solving, Crystal Yvette Baldwindouglas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The state of Maryland has implemented the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) operations & algebraic thinking and number & operations-fractions with emphasis on students in Grades K-5 acquiring the ability to solve word problems for state and curriculum math assessments. However, since the implementation of CCSSM, 30% of elementary students in a Maryland school district have demonstrated underachievement (basic or below basic level) on problem-solving sections of the state and school standardized tests. This qualitative case study, guided by Polya's model of the four phases of mathematical problem-solving, was conducted to address this problem. The research questions addressed …

Teachers' Reflection On Their Beliefs And Question-Asking Practices During Mathematics Instruction, Kaili Takiyah Hardamon Jan 2019

Teachers' Reflection On Their Beliefs And Question-Asking Practices During Mathematics Instruction, Kaili Takiyah Hardamon

Wayne State University Dissertations

Teachers’ daily instructional practices are a critical component in creating a rich and meaningful educational experience for students. Thus, factors that inform instructional practices are of particular importance and interest to education researchers and other stakeholders. Beliefs about teaching and learning are a known factor influencing teachers’ instructional practices (Ernest, 1989). This study focused on a specific instructional practice, question-asking, which has a profound impact on students’ experience with mathematics (Weiland, Hudson, and Amador (2014). Understanding the relationship between teachers’ beliefs and practice helps to make sense of teachers’ decision-making processes, particularly as they choose questions to ask students during …

Characterizations Of Marshall-Olkin Discrete Reduced Modified Weibull Distribution, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

Characterizing a distribution is an important problem in applied sciences, where an investigator is vitally interested to know if their model follows the right distribution. To this end, the investigator relies on conditions under which their model would follow specifically chosen distribution. Certain characterizations of the Marshall-Olkin discrete reduced modified Weibull distribution are presented to complete, in some way, their work.

Mathematical Modeling Experiences: Narratives From A Preservice Teacher And An Instructor, Sarah Brand, Hyunyi Jung Jan 2019

Mathematical Modeling Experiences: Narratives From A Preservice Teacher And An Instructor, Sarah Brand, Hyunyi Jung

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

Regardless of the benefits of engaging in mathematical modeling, few preservice teachers (PTs) have experienced mathematical modeling firsthand. This study offers an example of how to make sense of the interaction between the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling by examining a teacher educator’s decision making, her analysis of 36 PTs’ learning, and an in-depth narrative from a PT. Findings show the value of engaging with structurally relevant mathematical modeling tasks and considering social issues via mathematical modeling, resulting in task designs which aim to deepen students’ understanding of society and mathematics.

The Extended Alpha Power Transformed Family Of Distributions: Properties And Applications, Zubair Ahmad, Muhammad Ilyas, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this article, a new family of lifetime distributions by adding an additional parameter to the existing distributions is introduced. The new family is called, the extended alpha power transformed family of distributions. For the proposed family, explicit expressions for some mathematical properties along with estimation of parameters through Maximum likelihood Method are discussed. A special sub-model, called the extended alpha power transformed Weibull distribution is considered in detail. The proposed model is very flexible and can be used to model data with increasing, decreasing or bathtub shaped hazard rates. To access the behavior of the model parameters, a small …

On The Generalized Log Burr Iii Distribution: Development, Properties, Characterizations And Applications, Fiaz Ahmad Bhatti, Gholamhossein Hamedani, Azeem Ali, Munir Ahmad

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we present a generalized log Burr III (GLBIII) distribution developed on the basis of a generalized log Pearson differential equation (GLPE). The density function of the GLBIII is exponential, arc, J, reverse-J, bimodal, left-skewed, right- skewed and symmetrical shaped. The hazard rate function of GLBIII distribution has various shapes such as constant, increasing, decreasing, increasing-decreasing, upside- down bathtub and modified bathtub. Descriptive measures such as quantile function, sub- models, ordinary moments, moments of order statistics, incomplete moments, reliability and uncertainty measures are theoretically established. The GLBIII distribution is characterized via different techniques. Parameters of the GLBIII distribution …

A New Extension Of Lindley Distribution: Modified Validation Test, Characterizations And Different Methods Of Estimation, Mohamed Ibrahim, Abhimanyu Singh Yadav, Haitham M. Yousof, Hafida Goual, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, a new extension of Lindley distribution has been introduced. Certain characterizations based on truncated moments, hazard and reverse hazard function, conditional expectation of the proposed distribution are presented. Besides, these characterizations, other statistical/mathematical properties of the proposed model are also discussed. The estimation of the parameters is performed through different classical methods of estimation. Bayes estimation is computed under gamma informative prior under the squared error loss function. The performances of all estimation methods are studied via Monte Carlo simulations in mean square error sense. The potential of the proposed model is analyzed through two data sets. …

A Bayesian Nonparametric Multiple Testing Procedure For Comparing Several Treatments Against A Control, Luis Gutiérrez, Andrés Barrientos, Jorge González, Daniel Taylor-Rodríguez Jan 2019

A Bayesian Nonparametric Multiple Testing Procedure For Comparing Several Treatments Against A Control, Luis Gutiérrez, Andrés Barrientos, Jorge González, Daniel Taylor-Rodríguez

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We propose a Bayesian nonparametric strategy to test for differences between a control group and several treatment regimes. Most of the existing tests for this type of comparison are based on the differences between location parameters. In contrast, our approach identifies differences across the entire distribution, avoids strong modeling assumptions over the distributions for each treatment, and accounts for multiple testing through the prior distribution on the space of hypotheses. The proposal is compared to other commonly used hypothesis testing procedures under simulated scenarios. Two real applications are also analyzed with the proposed methodology.

Stability Conditions For Coupled Oscillators In Linear Arrays, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco, J.J.P. Veerman Jan 2019

Stability Conditions For Coupled Oscillators In Linear Arrays, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we give necessary conditions for stability of flocks in R. We focus on linear arrays with decentralized agents, where each agent interacts with only a few its neighbors. We obtain explicit expressions for necessary conditions for asymptotic stability in the case that the systems consists of a periodic arrangement of two or three different types of agents, i.e. configurations as follows: ...2-1-2-1 or ...3-2-1-3-2-1. Previous literature indicated that the (necessary) condition for stability in the case of a single agent (...1-1-1) held that the first moment of certain coefficients governing the interactions between agents has to be …

A Dc Programming Approach For Solving Multicast Network Design Problems Via The Nesterov Smoothing Technique, Wondi Geremew, Mau Nam Nguyen, A. Semenov, V. Boginski, E. Pasiliao Jan 2019

A Dc Programming Approach For Solving Multicast Network Design Problems Via The Nesterov Smoothing Technique, Wondi Geremew, Mau Nam Nguyen, A. Semenov, V. Boginski, E. Pasiliao

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper continues our effort initiated in [19] to study Multicast Communication Networks, modeled as bilevel hierarchical clustering problems, by using mathematical optimization techniques. Given a finite number of nodes, we consider two different models of multicast networks by identifying a certain number of nodes as cluster centers, and at the same time, locating a particular node that serves as a total center so as to minimize the total transportation cost through the network. The fact that the cluster centers and the total center have to be among the given nodes makes this problem a discrete optimization problem. Our approach …

Rationality In Bargaining By Finite Automata, Jim Bell Jan 2019

Rationality In Bargaining By Finite Automata, Jim Bell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Aspects of behavioral decision-making can be integrated into game-theoretic models of two-player bargaining using finite automata which can represent bargaining strategies in combination with various behavioral traits. The automata are used as bargaining agents who must jointly agree upon a fixed allocation of transferable utility in an infinite-horizon Rubinstein bargaining game. At each turn, the automata are given the opportunity to accept a proposed portion of the transferable utility, or to reject the proposal and make a counter-offer of their own. A round-robin tournament and ecological simulations were run to explore strategic dominance under different conditions. Principles of bargaining strategy …

Graded Quivers And B-Branes At Calabi-Yau Singularities, Cyril Closset, Sebastían Franco, Jirui Guo, Azeem Hasan Jan 2019

Graded Quivers And B-Branes At Calabi-Yau Singularities, Cyril Closset, Sebastían Franco, Jirui Guo, Azeem Hasan

Publications and Research

A graded quiver with superpotential is a quiver whose arrows are assigned degrees c ∈ {0, 1, · · · , m}, for some integer m ≥ 0, with relations generated by a superpotential of degree m − 1. Ordinary quivers (m = 1) often describe the open string sector of D-brane systems; in particular, they capture the physics of D3-branes at local Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-fold singularities in type IIB string theory, in the guise of 4d N = 1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. It was pointed out recently that graded quivers with m = 2 and m …

Normal Approximation For Locally Dependent Collateralized Debt Obligation, Suporn Jongpreechaharn Jan 2019

Normal Approximation For Locally Dependent Collateralized Debt Obligation, Suporn Jongpreechaharn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation sheds light on a collateralized debt obligation (CDO) since it resulted in the financial crisis between 2007 and 2008. Because of damage of this crisis, several authors have attempted to approximate loss on a tranche of a CDO. For instance, in 2009, Karoui and Jiao used a normal random variable to approximate the loss on a tranche of a CDO containing independent assets. However, in this work, we are attentive to dependence structure among assets in a CDO. We present two types of dependent condition: local dependence (LD) and disjoint local dependence (DLD). They roughly mean that defaults …

Upper Bounds For Constant Slope P-Adic Families Of Modular Forms, John Bergdall Jan 2019

Upper Bounds For Constant Slope P-Adic Families Of Modular Forms, John Bergdall

Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We study p-adic families of eigenforms for which the p-th Hecke eigenvalue 𝑎𝑝 a p has constant p-adic valuation (“constant slope families”). We prove two separate upper bounds for the size of such families. The first is in terms of the logarithmic derivative of 𝑎𝑝 a p while the second depends only on the slope of the family. We also investigate the numerical relationship between our results and the former Gouvêa–Mazur conjecture.

A First-Year Teacher’S Implementation Of Short-Cycle Formative Assessment Through The Use Of A Classroom Response System And Flexible Grouping, Adrienne Irving Dumas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As teachers we are tasked with ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills necessary to not only perform with proficiency on local state and national assessments but also to provide our students with opportunities to develop confidence and competence as learners of mathematics through meaningful challenging and worthwhile activities. As such many teachers have turned to technology and cooperative groups as staples in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to understand how one first-year teacher implemented what she was taught in her undergraduate coursework in teaching two specific units of instruction in two sections of high …

Beta Invariant And Variations Of Chain Theorems For Matroids, Sooyeon Lee Jan 2019

Beta Invariant And Variations Of Chain Theorems For Matroids, Sooyeon Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The beta invariant of a matroid was introduced by Crapo in 1967. We first find the lower bound of the beta invariant of 3-connected matroids with rank r and the matroids which attain the lower bound. Second we characterize the matroids with beta invariant 5 and 6. For binary matroids we characterize matroids with beta invariant 7. These results extend earlier work of Oxley. Lastly we partially answer an open question of chromatic uniqueness of wheels and prove a splitting formula for the beta invariant of generalized parallel connection of two matroids. Tutte's Wheel-and-Whirl theorem and Seymour's Splitter theorem give …

Quadratic Reciprocity: Proofs And Applications, Awatef Noweafa Almuteri Jan 2019

Quadratic Reciprocity: Proofs And Applications, Awatef Noweafa Almuteri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The law of quadratic reciprocity is an important result in number theory. The purpose of this thesis is to present several proofs as well as applications of the law of quadratic reciprocity. I will present three proofs of the quadratic reciprocity. We begin with a proof that depends on Gauss's lemma and Eisenstein's lemma. We then describe another proof due to Eisentein using the $n$th roots of unity. Then we provide a modern proof published in 1991 by Rousseau. In the second part of the thesis, we present two applications of quadratic reciprocity. These include special cases of Dirichlet's theorem …

Nidus Idearum. Scilogs, V: Joining The Dots, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with noncontrolled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). * In this fifth book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, mostly referring to topics on NEUTROSOPHY – email messages to research colleagues, …

Sparsity Promoting Regularization For Effective Noise Suppression In Spect Image Reconstruction, Wei Zheng, Si Li, Andrzej Krol, C. Ross Schmidtlein, Xueying Zeng, Yuesheng Xu Jan 2019

Sparsity Promoting Regularization For Effective Noise Suppression In Spect Image Reconstruction, Wei Zheng, Si Li, Andrzej Krol, C. Ross Schmidtlein, Xueying Zeng, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The purpose of this research is to develop an advanced reconstruction method for low-count, hence high-noise, Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) image reconstruction. It consists of a novel reconstruction model to suppress noise while conducting reconstruction and an efficient algorithm to solve the model. A novel regularizer is introduced as the nonconvex denoising term based on the approximate sparsity of the image under a geometric tight frame transform domain. The deblurring term is based on the negative log-likelihood of the SPECT data model. To solve the resulting nonconvex optimization problem a Preconditioned Fixed-point Proximity Algorithm (PFPA) is introduced. We prove …

Improving Access To Clean Water In Rural Ecuador: The Connection Between Willingness To Pay And Population Health, Micalea Leaska Jan 2019

Improving Access To Clean Water In Rural Ecuador: The Connection Between Willingness To Pay And Population Health, Micalea Leaska

Capstone Collection

Climate change is affecting social and environmental determinants of health through access to safe drinking water, safely managed sanitation systems, and access to health care services and the ability for individuals to break free from unsuitable circumstances. Ecological disturbances such as those caused by climate change can cause a shift in host vectors or a change in habitat that results in a greater likelihood of the pathogen coming in contact with humans. Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and their accessibility to populations can directly impact a community’s vulnerability to diseases and limiting factors to increase economic growth. If rural …
