Mean Value Theorems For Riemannian Manifolds Via The Obstacle Problem, Brian Benson, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone Jan 2019

Mean Value Theorems For Riemannian Manifolds Via The Obstacle Problem, Brian Benson, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We develop some of the basic theory for the obstacle problem on Riemannian manifolds, and we use it to establish a mean value theorem. Our mean value theorem works for a very wide class of Riemannian manifolds and has no weights at all within the integral.

Perturbed Obstacle Problems In Lipschitz Domains: Linear Stability And Nondegeneracy In Measure, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone Jan 2019

Perturbed Obstacle Problems In Lipschitz Domains: Linear Stability And Nondegeneracy In Measure, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the classical obstacle problem on bounded, connected Lipschitz domains D⊂Rn. We derive quantitative bounds on the changes to contact sets under general perturbations to both the right-hand side and the boundary data for obstacle problems. In particular, we show that the Lebesgue measure of the symmetric difference between two contact sets is linearly comparable to the L1-norm of perturbations in the data.

Utilizing Multi-Level Classification Techniques To Predict Adverse Drug Effects And Reactions, Victoria Puhl Jan 2019

Utilizing Multi-Level Classification Techniques To Predict Adverse Drug Effects And Reactions, Victoria Puhl

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Multi-class classification models are used to predict categorical response variables with more than two possible outcomes. A collection of multi-class classification techniques such as Multinomial Logistic Regression, Na\"{i}ve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine is used in predicting patients’ drug reactions and adverse drug effects based on patients’ demographic and drug administration. The newly released 2018 data on drug reactions and adverse drug effects from U.S. Food and Drug Administration are tested with the models. The applicability of model evaluation measures such as sensitivity, specificity and prediction accuracy in multi-class settings, are also discussed.

Case–Control Research Study Of Auto-Brewery Syndrome, Barbara Jean Cordell, Anup Kanodia, Gregory K. Miller

Faculty Publications

Background: Auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), also known as Gut Fermentation Syndrome and Endogenous Ethanol Fermentation, is afflicting people worldwide, but little is known about ABS patients’ demographics, health history, lifestyle factors, and diet.

Method: We conducted a broad-based case–control survey study on 52 patients known to have a diagnosis of ABS and their household members. The research compares the symptomatic group (N ¼ 28) to the asymptomatic group (N ¼ 18) regarding lifestyle and health, diet, and medical history.

Results: With a response rate of 88% and using rank-sum tests, the data demonstrate that patients with ABS have …

A Limiting Process To Invert The Gauss-Radon Transform, Jeremy Becnel Jan 2019

A Limiting Process To Invert The Gauss-Radon Transform, Jeremy Becnel

Faculty Publications

In this work we extend the finite dimensional Radon transform [23] to the Gaussian measure. We develop an inversion formula for this GaussRadon transform by way of Fourier inversion formula. We then proceed to extend these results to the infinite dimensional setting.

Recovering A Random Variable From Conditional Expectations Using Reconstruction Algorithms For The Gauss Radon Transform, Jeremy Becnel, Daniel Riser-Espinoza Jan 2019

Recovering A Random Variable From Conditional Expectations Using Reconstruction Algorithms For The Gauss Radon Transform, Jeremy Becnel, Daniel Riser-Espinoza

Faculty Publications

The Radon transform maps a function on n-dimensional Euclidean space onto its integral over a hyperplane. The fields of modern computerized tomography and medical imaging are fundamentally based on the Radon transform and the computer implementation of the inversion, or reconstruction, techniques of the Radon transform. In this work we use the Radon transform with a Gaussian measure to recover random variables from their conditional expectations. We derive reconstruction algorithms for random variables of unbounded support from samples of conditional expectations and discuss the error inherent in each algorithm.

Sub-Cloning, Expression, And Purification Of The Wild Type And Mutated Sigma-1 Receptor, Christopher Koch Jan 2019

Sub-Cloning, Expression, And Purification Of The Wild Type And Mutated Sigma-1 Receptor, Christopher Koch

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The Sigma-1 receptor (S1R) is an important pharmaceutical target that has been linked to several neurological diseases and drug addiction. It has been proposed that multimerization of S1R is important for attenuating its interactions with the dopamine transporter (DAT) and that S1R agonists promote dissociation to a monomeric form necessary for DAT interaction. This project aims to assess the role of the N-terminal transmembrane domain in oligomerization and binding activity of the mammalian Sigma-1 receptor (S1R). N-terminal truncations lacking the transmembrane domain and the E102Q variant, which displays altered activity and cellular localization, were expressed, purified in order to determine …

On A Generalization Of Lucas Numbers, Skylyn Olyvia Irby Jan 2019

On A Generalization Of Lucas Numbers, Skylyn Olyvia Irby

Honors Theses

In this paper, we consider a generalization of Lucas numbers. Recall that Lucas numbers are the sequence of integers defined by the recurrence relation: L_n = L_{n−1} + L_{n−2} with the initial conditions L_1 = 1 and L_2 = 3(or L_0 = 1 and L_1 = 3 if the first subscript is zero). That is, the classical Lucas number sequence is 1, 3, 4, 7, 11, 18, .... The goal of the present paper is to study properties of certain generalizations of the Lucas sequence. In particular, we consider the following generalizations of the sequence: l_n = al_{n−1} + l_{n−2} …

6th-12th Grade Math Teachers And Their Experiences With The Mississippi College- And Career-Readiness Standards, Dorothy Reid

Honors Theses

This thesis identifies and describes 6th-12th grade math teachers and their experiences with the Mississippi College- and Career- Readiness Standards. There are two parts to this thesis: 1) a survey distributed to public school math teachers across the state and 2) the written thesis. In my thesis, I craft teacher narratives from the quantitative and qualitative results of the survey. Listening to the teachers’ narratives provides beneficial insights to the implementation of the MCCRS at the classroom level. Teachers have many different experiences. My thesis offers policy recommendations, based on the teacher narratives, to three levels of education: teachers, schools …

A Constructive Approach To Higher Homotopy Operations, David Blanc, Mark W. Johnson, James M. Turner Jan 2019

A Constructive Approach To Higher Homotopy Operations, David Blanc, Mark W. Johnson, James M. Turner

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this paper we provide an explicit general construction of higher homotopy operations in model categories, which include classical examples such as (long) Toda brackets and (iterated) Massey products, but also cover unpointed operations not usually considered in this context. We show how such operations, thought of as obstructions to rectifying a homotopy-commutative diagram, can be defined in terms of a double induction, yielding intermediate obstructions as well.

Counting And Coloring Sudoku Graphs, Kyle Oddson Jan 2019

Counting And Coloring Sudoku Graphs, Kyle Oddson

Mathematics and Statistics Dissertations, Theses, and Final Project Papers

A sudoku puzzle is most commonly a 9 × 9 grid of 3 × 3 boxes wherein the puzzle player writes the numbers 1 - 9 with no repetition in any row, column, or box. We generalize the notion of the n2 × n2 sudoku grid for all n ∈ ℤ≥2 and codify the empty sudoku board as a graph. In the main section of this paper we prove that sudoku boards and sudoku graphs exist for all such n; we prove the equivalence of [3]'s construction using unions and products of graphs to the definition of …

Parameter-Free Outlier Scoring Using Acute Angle Ordered Difference Distance, Pollaton Pumruckthum Jan 2019

Parameter-Free Outlier Scoring Using Acute Angle Ordered Difference Distance, Pollaton Pumruckthum

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

An anomaly scoring algorithm assigns a score to an instance that provides a large value for an outlier in order to help detecting anomalies within a dataset. In 2013, one of the parameter-free techniques called the order difference distance outlier factor was proposed (OOF). OOF was computed using the ordered difference distance derived from the distance matrix sorted in each row, before calculating the difference. The minimum distance was included to avoid false detection but it also decreased the score of anomalies forming a small cluster. To avoid the use of the minimum distance, the new technique is proposed base …

Numerical Methods For Jump-Extended Cox-Ingersoll-Ross And Constant Elasticity Of Variance Models, Purin Klunklar Jan 2019

Numerical Methods For Jump-Extended Cox-Ingersoll-Ross And Constant Elasticity Of Variance Models, Purin Klunklar

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The jump-extended Cox-Ingersoll-Ross and jump-extended constant elasticity of variance models are stochastic differential equations (SDEs) used to forecast interest rates or stock prices. We simulate these SDEs directly by eight numerical methods: Euler Maruyama method, simplified Euler method, jump-adapted Euler method, jumpadapted simplified Euler method, jump-adapted order two weak method, jump-adapted simplified order two weak method, jump-adapted order two derivative free method and jump-adapted simplified order two derivative free method. The transformed approach is also applied with these eight numerical methods. We compare their performance by testing the positivity preserving of numerical solutions and finding their weak orders of convergence …

Stationary Test For First Order Autoregressive Model Subject To Sampling Errors, Weerapat Rattanachadjan Jan 2019

Stationary Test For First Order Autoregressive Model Subject To Sampling Errors, Weerapat Rattanachadjan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In 1979, Dickey and Fuller introduced a stationary test on the first order autoregressive model, AR(1), and limitting distribution of the estimator of autoregressive coefficient and the test statistics. The method has been applied to test the stationarity of the first order autoregressive time series model. However, the method has been applied regardless of sampling errors which usually occurs in data collection. autoregressive model subject to sampling errors.

My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with non-controlled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). * In this seventh book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, referring to different scientific topics – email messages to research colleagues, or …

Refined Neutrosophy And Lattices Vs. Pair Structures And Yinyang Bipolar Fuzzy Set, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we present the lattice structures of neutrosophic theories. We prove that Zhang-Zhang’s YinYang bipolar fuzzy set is a subclass of the Single-Valued bipolar neutrosophic set. Then we show that the pair structure is a particular case of refined neutrosophy, and the number of types of neutralities (sub-indeterminacies) may be any finite or infinite number.

Neutrosophic Triplet Structures - Vol. 1, Florentin Smarandache, Memet Sahin

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic set has been derived from a new branch of philosophy, namely Neutrosophy. Neutrosophic set is capable of dealing with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information. Neutrosophic set approaches are suitable to modeling problems with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information in which human knowledge is necessary, and human evaluation is needed. Neutrosophic set theory was firstly proposed in 1998 by Florentin Smarandache, who also developed the concept of single valued neutrosophic set, oriented towards real world scientific and engineering applications. Since then, the single valued neutrosophic set theory has been extensively studied in books and monographs, the properties of neutrosophic sets …

On Burr Iii-Pareto Distribution: Development, Properties, Characterizations And Applications, Fiaz Ahmad Bhatti, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Mustafa Ç. Korkmaz, Munir Ahmad

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, a new four parameter lifetime model with increasing, decreasing, increasing-decreasing, decreasing-increasing-decreasing, modified bathtub, bathtub and inverted bathtub hazard rate function called Burr III-Pareto (BIII-Pareto) is developed on the basis of the T-X family technique. The BIII-Pareto density function is arc, J-shape, reverse J-shape, positively, negatively skewed and symmetrical. Some structural and mathematical properties including moments, moments of order statistics, inequality measures and reliability measures are theoretically established. The BIII-Pareto distribution is characterized via different techniques. Parameters of the BIII-Pareto distribution are estimated using maximum likelihood method. The simulation study for performance of the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) …

The Exponentiated Generalized Topp Leone-G Family Of Distributions: Properties And Applications, Hesham Mohammed Reyad, Morad Alizadeh, Farrukh Jamal, Soha Othman, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we propose a new class of continuous distributions called the exponentiated generalized Topp Leone-G family that extends the Topp Leone-G family introduced by Al-Shomrani et al. (2016). We derive explicit expressions for certain mathematical properties of the new family such as; ordinary and incomplete moments, generating functions, reliability analysis, Lorenz and Bonferroni curves, Rényi entropy, stress strength model, moment of residual and reversed residual life, order statistics, extreme values and characterizations. We discuss the maximum likelihood estimates and the observed information matrix for the model parameters. Two real data sets are used to illustrate the flexibility of …

A Design Of A Material Assembly In Space-Time Generating And Storing Energy, Mihhail Berezovski, Stan Elektrov, Konstantin Lurie Jan 2019

A Design Of A Material Assembly In Space-Time Generating And Storing Energy, Mihhail Berezovski, Stan Elektrov, Konstantin Lurie

Publications

The paper introduces a theoretical background of the mechanism of electromagnetic energy and power accumulation and its focusing in narrow pulses travelling along a transmission line with material parameters variable in 1D-space and time. This mechanism may be implemented due to a special material geometry- a distribution of two different dielectrics in a spatio-temporal checkerboard. We concentrate on the practically reasonable means to bring this mechanism into action in a device that may work both as energy generator and energy storage. The basic ideas discussed below appear to be fairly general; we have chosen their electromagnetic implementation as an excellent …

New Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces On Plane Regions, Their Properties, And Applications To Partial Differential Equations, Jabar S. Hassan Jan 2019

New Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces On Plane Regions, Their Properties, And Applications To Partial Differential Equations, Jabar S. Hassan

Doctoral Dissertations

"We introduce new reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces W2(m,n) (D) on unbounded plane regions D. We study linear non-homogeneous hyperbolic partial differential equation problems on D with solutions in various reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We establish existence and uniqueness results for such solutions under appropriate hypotheses on the driver. Stability of solutions with respect to the driver is analyzed and local uniform approximation results are obtained which depend on the density of nodes. The local uniform approximation results required a careful determination of the reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on which the elementary …

K -Isocoronal Tilings, Eduard C. Taganap, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas Jan 2019

K -Isocoronal Tilings, Eduard C. Taganap, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article, a framework is presented that allows the systematic derivation of planar edge-to-edge k-isocoronal tilings from tile-s-transitive tilings, s k. A tiling T is k-isocoronal if its vertex coronae form k orbits or k transitivity classes under the action of its symmetry group. The vertex corona of a vertex x of T is used to refer to the tiles that are incident to x. The k-isocoronal tilings include the vertex-k-transitive tilings (k-isogonal) and k-uniform tilings. In a vertex-k- transitive tiling, the vertices form k transitivity classes under its symmetry group. If this tiling consists of regular polygons then …

Remarks On Suzuki's Epimorphism Number, Patrick Shanahan Jan 2019

Remarks On Suzuki's Epimorphism Number, Patrick Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

A partial order on prime knots can be defined by declaring ≥, if there exists an epimorphism from the knot group of onto the knot group of . Suppose that is a 2-bridge knot that is strictly greater than distinct, nontrivial knots. In this paper, we determine a lower bound on the crossing number of in terms of . Using this bound, we answer a question of Suzuki regarding the 2-bridge epimorphism number EK() which is the maximum number of nontrivial knots which are strictly smaller than some 2-bridge knot with crossing number . We establish …

On The Structure Of Hom Quandles, Alissa Crans

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We continue the study of the quandle of homomorphisms into a medial quandle begun in [2]. We show that it suffices to consider only medial source quandles, and therefore the structure theorem of [11] provides a characterization of the Hom quandle. In the particular case when the target is 2-reductive this characterization takes on a simple form that makes it easy to count and determine the structure of the Hom quandle

Improved Prediction Of Periodicity Using Quartet Approximation In A Lattice Model Of Intracellular Calcium Release, Robert J. Rovetti Jan 2019

Improved Prediction Of Periodicity Using Quartet Approximation In A Lattice Model Of Intracellular Calcium Release, Robert J. Rovetti

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This study uses a probabilistic cellular automata (PCA) to model the spatial and temporal dynamics of calcium release units (CRUs) within cardiac myocytes. The CRUs are subject to random activation, nearest-neighbor recruitment, and temporal refractoriness, and their interactions produce a physiologically-important condition called calcium alternans, a beat-to-beat oscillation in the amount of calcium released. In the PCA this manifests as a transition to period-2 behavior in the fraction of activated lattice sites. We investigate this phenomenon using PCA simulations and moment-closure approximation methods of zero order (mean-field), first order (pair), and second order (quartet). We show that only the quartet …

Associated Primes And Syzygies Of Linked Modules, Olgur Celikbas, Mohammad T. Dibaei, Mohsen Gheibi, Arash Sadeghi, Ryo Takahaski

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the notion of geometrically linked ideals, we show that over a Gorenstein local ring R, if a Cohen-Macaulay R-module M of grade g is linked to an R-module N by a Gorenstein ideal c, such that AssR(M)\AssR(N) = ;, then M R N is isomorphic to direct sum of copies of R=a, where a is a Gorenstein ideal of R of grade g + 1. We give a criterion for the depth of a local ring (R;m; k) in terms of the homological dimensions of the modules linked to the syzygies of the residue eld k. As a …

A Self-Contained Course In The Mathematical Theory Of Statistics For Scientists & Engineers With An Emphasis On Predictive Regression Modeling & Financial Applications., Tim Smith

Open Access Textbooks

Preface & Acknowledgments

This textbook is designed for a higher level undergraduate, perhaps even first year graduate, course for engineering or science students who are interested to gain knowledge of using data analysis to make predictive models. While there is no statistical perquisite knowledge required to read this book, due to the fact that the study is designed for the reader to truly understand the underlying theory rather than just learn how to read computer output, it would be best read with some familiarity of elementary statistics. The book is self-contained and the only true perquisite knowledge is a solid …
