Can We Detect Undeclared Facilities In The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Using Mathematical Simulations?, Kassandra Guajardo, Lee Burke, Romarie Morales Rosado
Can We Detect Undeclared Facilities In The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Using Mathematical Simulations?, Kassandra Guajardo, Lee Burke, Romarie Morales Rosado
STAR Program Research Presentations
What if there was a way to detect undeclared (Clandestine) facilities using data sets from a nuclear facility? The Statistical Modeling and Experimental Design group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are developing the Modeling and Inference for Remote Sensing (MIRS) model. The model uses two deterrence scenarios within the nuclear fuel cycle to detect undeclared facilities. The two scenarios are used in an agent based nuclear fuel cycle simulator to produce the declared and undeclared feed, tails assay, and sink inventory in kilograms of Uranium. In the first scenario, natural uranium is being diverted from the conversion plant to …
Why Bohmian Approach To Quantum Econometrics: An Algebraic Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Songsak Sriboonchitta
Why Bohmian Approach To Quantum Econometrics: An Algebraic Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Songsak Sriboonchitta
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Many equations in economics and finance are very complex. As a result, existing methods of solving these equations are very complicated and time-consuming. In many practical situations, more efficient algorithms for solving new complex equations appear when it turns out that these equations can be reduced to equations from other application areas -- equations for which more efficient algorithms are already known. It turns out that some equations in economics and finance can be reduced to equations from physics -- namely, from quantum physics. The resulting approach for solving economic equations is known as quantum econometrics. In quantum physics, …
T-De Vries Algebra, Nawal Alznad
T-De Vries Algebra, Nawal Alznad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main point of this dissertation is to introduce the action on de Vries algebra by a topological monoid and we denoted the resulting category by dVT. In order to reach our goal, we started with introducing new proofs for some well known results in the category of flows. Then, we studied the Generalized Smirnov's Theorem for flows. After we studied the new category (dVT), we were able to provide a new way to construct the Čech-stone flow compactification of a given flow. Finally, we developed the co-free T-de Vries algebra for a special case.
Surface Entropy Of Shifts Of Finite Type, Dennis Pace
Surface Entropy Of Shifts Of Finite Type, Dennis Pace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Let χ be the class of 1-D and 2-D subshifts. This thesis defines a new function, HS : χ x R → [0,∞] which we call the surface entropy of a shift. This definition is inspired by the topological entropy of a subshift and we compare and contrast several structural properties of surface entropy to entropy. We demonstrate that much like entropy, the finiteness of surface entropy is a conjugacy invariant and is a tool in the classification of subshifts. We develop a tiling algorithm related to continued fractions which allows us to prove a continuity result about surface …
Gradient Ricci Solitons With A Conformal Vector Field, Ramesh Sharma
Gradient Ricci Solitons With A Conformal Vector Field, Ramesh Sharma
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We show that a connected gradient Ricci soliton (M,g,f,λ) with constant scalar curvature and admitting a non-homothetic conformal vector field V leaving the potential vector field invariant, is Einstein and the potential function f is constant. For locally conformally flat case and non-homothetic V we show without constant scalar curvature assumption, that f is constant and g has constant curvature.
Optimizing Krylov Subspace Methods For Linear Systems And Least Squares Problems, Mei Yang
Optimizing Krylov Subspace Methods For Linear Systems And Least Squares Problems, Mei Yang
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
The linear system and the linear least squares problem are two fundamental numerical linear algebra problems. Krylov subspace methods are the most practical and common techniques to build solvers. In this thesis, we focus on optimizing Krylov subspace methods for nonsymmetric linear systems and least squares problems. For nonsymmetric linear systems Ax=b one of Krylov subspace methods is GMRES, which seeks approximate solutions over the Krylov subspace K_k (A,b) (with the initial guess x_0=0). Constructing different search spaces and applying restart strategy are two techniques used to deal with possible slow convergence and to reduce computational cost in GMRES and …
Modeling Plant Virus Propagation And An Optimal Control, Mark Jackson
Modeling Plant Virus Propagation And An Optimal Control, Mark Jackson
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Plants are a food source for man and many species. They also are sources of medicines, fibers for clothes, and are essential for a healthy environment. But plants are subject to diseases many of which are caused by viruses. These viruses often kill the plant. As a result, billions of dollars are lost every year because of virus related crop loss. Most of the time, virus propagation is done by a vector, usually insects that bite infected plants, get themselves infected and then bite susceptible plants. To combat the vectors, and ultimately the viruses, pesticides are often used as a …
Factorization In Integral Domains., Ryan H. Gipson
Factorization In Integral Domains., Ryan H. Gipson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We investigate the atomicity and the AP property of the semigroup rings F[X; M], where F is a field, X is a variable and M is a submonoid of the additive monoid of nonnegative rational numbers. In this endeavor, we introduce the following notions: essential generators of M and elements of height (0, 0, 0, . . .) within a cancellative torsion-free monoid Γ. By considering the latter, we are able to determine the irreducibility of certain binomials of the form Xπ − 1, where π is of height (0, 0, 0, . . .), in the monoid domain. Finally, …
Mathematical Modeling Of The Bone Remodeling Process, Iris Lizeth Alvarado
Mathematical Modeling Of The Bone Remodeling Process, Iris Lizeth Alvarado
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
The skeleton is a very important organ that needs to be continuously remodeled due to microdamage, changes in mechanical loading, or mineral homeostasis. The bone remodeling process is responsible for maintaining the structure and function of the skeletal system. Accumulation of microdamage that goes unrepaired within the bone matrix can lead to bone fragility and loss of mechanical properties. Evidence suggests that when microdamage is present in the bone structure, osteocyte apoptosis plays an important role in the initiation of the bone remodeling process. Osteocytes are known to release RANKL a promoter of osteoclastogenesis (bone-resorbing cells) and scelorstion an inhibitor …
Mesh-Free Semi-Lagrangian Methods For Transport On A Sphere Using Radial Basis Functions, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright
Mesh-Free Semi-Lagrangian Methods For Transport On A Sphere Using Radial Basis Functions, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present three new semi-Lagrangian methods based on radial basis function (RBF) interpolation for numerically simulating transport on a sphere. The methods are mesh-free and are formulated entirely in Cartesian coordinates, thus avoiding any irregular clustering of nodes at artificial boundaries on the sphere and naturally bypassing any apparent artificial singularities associated with surface-based coordinate systems. For problems involving tracer transport in a given velocity field, the semi-Lagrangian framework allows these new methods to avoid the use of any stabilization terms (such as hyperviscosity) during time-integration, thus reducing the number of parameters that have to be tuned. The three new …

Interlace Polynomials Of Cycles With One Additional Chord, Jhonny Almeida
Interlace Polynomials Of Cycles With One Additional Chord, Jhonny Almeida
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
In this research, we investigate the interlace polynomial of a certain type of cycle graph with additional edges, called chords. We focus on the graphs resulted by adding one chord to cycle graphs. Consider the cycle Cn with n edges. When adding one chord to it, two sub-cycles were created which share one edge. If the length of one sub-cycle is r (r ≥ 3), then the other length is n - r+2. All cycles with one chord resulting in a sub-cycle of length r, where r ≤ n - r + 2, are isomorphic, denoted by J(n,r). When n …
An Enthalpy Model For The Dynamics Of A Deltaic System Under Base-Level Change, William Anderson
An Enthalpy Model For The Dynamics Of A Deltaic System Under Base-Level Change, William Anderson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Fluvial deltas are composites of two primary sedimentary environments: a depositional fluvial region and an offshore region. The fluvial region is defined by two geomorphic moving boundaries: an alluvial-bedrock transition (ABT), which separates the sediment prism from the non-erodible bedrock basement, and the shoreline (SH), where the delta meets the ocean. The trajectories of these boundaries in time and space define the evolution of the shape of the sedimentary prism, and are often used as stratigraphic indicators, particularly in seismic studies, of changes in relative sea level and the identification of stratigraphic sequences. In order to better understand the relative …

Empirical Bayesian Approach To Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Separate Priors For Left And Right Alternatives, Naveen K. Bansal, Mehdi Maadooliat, Steven J. Schrodi
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We consider a multiple hypotheses problem with directional alternatives in a decision theoretic framework. We obtain an empirical Bayes rule subject to a constraint on mixed directional false discovery rate (mdFDR≤α) under the semiparametric setting where the distribution of the test statistic is parametric, but the prior distribution is nonparametric. We proposed separate priors for the left tail and right tail alternatives as it may be required for many applications. The proposed Bayes rule is compared through simulation against rules proposed by Benjamini and Yekutieli and Efron. We illustrate the proposed methodology for two sets of …
Connection And Curvature In Crystals With Non-Constant Dislocation Density, Marek Z. Elźanowski, Gareth P. Parry
Connection And Curvature In Crystals With Non-Constant Dislocation Density, Marek Z. Elźanowski, Gareth P. Parry
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Given a smooth defective solid crystalline structure defined by linearly independent ‘lattice’ vector fields, the Burgers vector construction characterizes some aspect of the ‘defectiveness’ of the crystal by virtue of its interpretation in terms of the closure failure of appropriately defined paths in the material and this construction partly determines the distribution of dislocations in the crystal. In the case that the topology of the body manifold M is trivial (e.g., a smooth crystal defined on an open set in R2), it would seem at first glance that there is no corresponding construction that leads to the notion of a …
A Tensor's Torsion, Neil Steinburg
A Tensor's Torsion, Neil Steinburg
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While tensor products are quite prolific in commutative algebra, even some of their most basic properties remain relatively unknown. We explore one of these properties, namely a tensor's torsion. In particular, given any finitely generated modules, M and N over a ring R, the tensor product $M\otimes_R N$ almost always has nonzero torsion unless one of the modules M or N is free. Specifically, we look at which rings guarantee nonzero torsion in tensor products of non-free modules over the ring. We conclude that a specific subclass of one-dimensional Gorenstein rings will have this property.

Posterior Normal Approximation Of Real-Time Degradation Modeling Using Laplace Approximation, Mahmoud Ali Jawad
Posterior Normal Approximation Of Real-Time Degradation Modeling Using Laplace Approximation, Mahmoud Ali Jawad
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Preventing failure that can cause delays or catastrophe, has been the focus and motivation for engineers, and other establishments that deals with heavy and light machinery, equipment, and devices. One of the biggest challenges, is accuracy and heavy computations of remaining useful life distribution. In this thesis we will use Laplace Approximations (LA) to avoid relying on complicated numerical computations, in calculating the remaining useful life distribution (RLD). LA is useful method to approximate the posterior distribution of Bayesian formula that incorporates linear degradation model and prior distribution. This proposed approach is applicable to various degradation models composed of univariate …

Probabilistic And Extremal Problems In Combinatorics, Sean English
Probabilistic And Extremal Problems In Combinatorics, Sean English
Dissertations
Graph theory as a mathematical branch has been studied rigorously for almost three centuries. In the past century, many new branches of graph theory have been proposed. One important branch of graph theory involves the study of extremal graph theory. In 1941, Turán studied one of the first extremal problems, namely trying to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which avoid having certain structures. Since then, a large body of work has been created in the study of similar problems. In this dissertation, a few different extremal problems are studied, but for hypergraphs rather than graphs. In particular, …

Selective Strong Screenability, Isaac Joseph Coombs
Selective Strong Screenability, Isaac Joseph Coombs
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Screenability and strong screenability were both introduced some sixty years ago by R.H. Bing in his paper Metrization of Topological Spaces. Since then, much work has been done in exploring selective screenability (the selective version of screenability). However, the corresponding selective version of strong screenability has been virtually ignored. In this paper we seek to remedy this oversight. It is found that a great deal of the proofs about selective screenability readily carry over to proofs for the analogous version for selective strong screenability. We give some examples of selective strongly screenable spaces with the primary example being Pol's …

The utility of characterizing the effects of strain variation and individual/subgroup susceptibility on dose-response outcomes has motivated the search for new approaches beyond the popular use of the exponential dose-response model for listeriosis. While descriptive models can account for such variation, they have limited power to extrapolate beyond the details of particular outbreaks. By contrast, this study exhibits dose-response relationships from a mechanistic basis, quantifying key biological factors involved in pathogen-host dynamics. An …
Mathematical Inquiry With Loops, Jeanne Funk
Mathematical Inquiry With Loops, Jeanne Funk
Open Educational Resources
Mathematical Inquiry with Loops is a fun activity designed to introduce students in LMF101 (First Year Seminar for Liberal Arts: Math and Science) to mathematical exploration and hypothesis formation via hands-on exploration with paper loops. It should make students understand that the “facts” that make up mathematics, are not arbitrary, but arise from observation and experience. It should also encourage students to view mathematics as a science rooted in exploration and problem solving, rather than an esoteric exercise in symbol manipulation.
This activity is designed to be very low stakes (ungraded) and to take one hour of class time. There …

Wald Confidence Intervals For A Single Poisson Parameter And Binomial Misclassification Parameter When The Data Is Subject To Misclassification, Nishantha Janith Chandrasena Poddiwala Hewage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is based on a Poisson model that uses both error-free data and error-prone data subject to misclassification in the form of false-negative and false-positive counts. We present maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs), Fisher's Information, and Wald statistics for Poisson rate parameter and the two misclassification parameters. Next, we invert the Wald statistics to get asymptotic confidence intervals for Poisson rate parameter and false-negative rate parameter. The coverage and width properties for various sample size and parameter configurations are studied via a simulation study. Finally, we apply the MLEs and confidence intervals to one real data set and another realistic …
Fractional Difference Operators And Related Boundary Value Problems, Scott C. Gensler
Fractional Difference Operators And Related Boundary Value Problems, Scott C. Gensler
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this dissertation we develop a fractional difference calculus for functions on a discrete domain. We start by showing that the Taylor monomials, which play a role analagous to that of the power functions in ordinary differential calculus, can be expressed in terms of a family of polynomials which I will refer to as the Pochhammer polynomials. These important functions, the Taylor monomials, were previously described by other scholars primarily in terms of the gamma function. With only this description it is challenging to understand their properties. Describing the Taylor monomials in terms of the Pochhammer polynomials has made it …
