The universe is God’s choral poem, and science is a system of allegories within it. That is the thesis that I propose to expound and defend. Yet it is not a “thesis” at all, if the word “thesis” commits me to a certain kind of strict logical defense. I am not putting forward my thesis that science is allegory as the endpoint of a deductive or inductive argument. Rather, it is a springboard for a program of exploration and reflection that turns upside-down some conventional ways of thinking about science.

This paper takes a brief look at the history of conflict between the concepts of chance and divine activity. After reviewing some evidence for randomness in the universe, present philosophical and theological views from four different scientists on this subject are presented. Media play a large part in most of our daily lives. We watch television; we go to the movies; we listen to the radio. For years educators have been adapting media-related technological advancements for the purpose of teaching in the classroom. Here at the Physics Department of the University of the Pacific, we have adapted the medium of synchronized slide-tapes for use in the laboratory component of our calculus-based introductory physics course.

The study included the development and writing of a unit on transformational geometry which involved a holistic approach including the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. This unit was taught to the eighth grade class in the Oakville School District in Oakville, Washington. The results showed support that the teaching of this unit was effective.

Some people view a conjoining of Christianity and Mathematics as improper. They miss the point of the relationship. The content of mathematics is not affected by Christianity. The relationship does not concern what, or how (the Christian doesn’t solve equations or differentiate differently), but it concerns why. It concerns such things as the interpretation and appreciation of the beauty, the symmetries, the coincidences, the remarkable properties, man’s creative role, etc. This paper explores the relationship between Christianity and mathematics as part of a panel discussion on the topic.

This article surveys the different views of mathematical methodology that occurred from ancient Greek times through the early modern period up until its codification around 1900. After summarizing the axiomatic approach advocated by Aristotle and implemented in mathematics by Euclid, the talk explores the character of analysis in ancient Greek times, its development into a symbolic algebra by Viete and Descartes, and its expansion into a calculus of fluxions and differentials by Newton and Leibniz.
