Historical And Current Observations On Macroalgae In The Hillsborough Bay Estuary, J.O.R. Johansson Jan 2002

Historical And Current Observations On Macroalgae In The Hillsborough Bay Estuary, J.O.R. Johansson

Reports

To improve the understanding of macroalgae dynamics it was recommended that long-term monitoring of the macroalgae in the bay be initiated. Subsequently, the City of Tampa initiated a Hillsborough Bay macroalgae monitoring program that since 1986 has been providing consistent monthly biomass and species composition information from five fixed transects. In addition to the transect monitoring, low level aerial observations are conducted on a near monthly schedule for estimations of bay-wide macroalgae and seagrass coverage. Results indicate that the annual bay-wide macroalgae coverage has decreased near steadily from about 300ha in the late 1980's to less than 30ha since 1997.

Future Antarctic Margin Drilling: Developing A Science Program Plan For Mcmurdo Sound -- Report Of A Workshop Oxford, Uk April 5–7, 2001, David M. Harwood, Laura Lacy, Richard Levy

ANDRILL Research and Publications

ANDRILL (ANtarctic DRILLing) is a multinational initiative with the objectives to recover stratigraphic core records for use in interpreting Antarctica’s climatic, glacial and tectonic history over the past 50 million years and at varying scales of age resolution (0.1 to 100 thousand years [k.y.]). A key motivation of ANDRILL is that the role of the Antarctic cryosphere (ice sheets, ice shelves and sea-ice) in the global climate system is complex and poorly known. Understanding the past history of ice volume variation in Antarctica and associated physical changes in this region is critical to proper assessment of the global climate system …

Land Use Change And Modification Of Near-Surface Thermal Records In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mahmood, Ken Hubbard, Christy Carlson Jan 2002

Land Use Change And Modification Of Near-Surface Thermal Records In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mahmood, Ken Hubbard, Christy Carlson

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

The North American Great Plains have experienced a rapid overturning of natural grasslands to agricultural land use over the last century. Moreover, in some areas more than 80% of the land use has changed from dry land to irrigated agriculture during the second half of the twentieth century. It is speculated that these changes have modified near-surface atmospheric condition and our modeling study seems to support this. To identify changes in land surface- atmospheric modifications we have applied a soil moistureenergy balance model at three locations in Nebraska: Mead, York, and McCook. The model was applied for three land uses …

Asian Carp Jan 2002

Asian Carp

National Invasive Species Council

Four species of large Asian carps (grass, bighead, silver and black) have been imported into the U.S. for use in the aquaculture industry, and biologists are raising more and more concerns about their effect on native fish and shellfish when released or escaped to the wild. In fact, in the fall of 1999, fish kills in isolated ditches adjacent to the Upper Mississippi River on the Mark Twain National Wildlife Refuge in southern Illinois included large numbers (97%) of Asian carps, but only one individual each of four native fish species. After that incident, reports came in of commercial fishermen …

Methods For Caculating The Chesapeake Bay Benthic Index Of Biotic Integrity, Roberto J. Llansó, Daniel M. Dauer Jan 2002

Methods For Caculating The Chesapeake Bay Benthic Index Of Biotic Integrity, Roberto J. Llansó, Daniel M. Dauer

Benthic Applications

The Chesapeake Bay benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) was developed to assess benthic community health and environmental quality in Chesapeake Bay. The B-IBI evaluates the ecological condition of a sample by comparing values of key benthic community attributes (“metrics”) to reference values expected under non-degraded conditions in similar habitat types. It is therefore a measure of deviation from reference conditions.

The B-IBI is used by the Chesapeake Bay Benthic Monitoring Program, which is conducted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) and by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VA DEQ). The program contains two primary elements: …

Regression analysis, double mass curve method and double ratio technique were used in the assessment. The suspended sediment load and annual runoff of Sungai Telom and Sungai …

Assessment Of Pollution Load For Approved Eia Projects In The Industrial Sector (1988-1998) In Malaysia, Kok Sia Teng Jan 2002

Assessment Of Pollution Load For Approved Eia Projects In The Industrial Sector (1988-1998) In Malaysia, Kok Sia Teng

Student Works (2000-2009)

It is generally recognised that developing countries lacked quantitative decision support tools in the formulation and implementation of pollution control measures necessary to abate environmental impacts associated with industrial development. Reliable and comprehensive simulation models are needed as basic tools for the quantification of industrial pollutant emission load, the assessment of their impacts on the environment as well as the evaluation of pollution control options. As a response to this inadequacy, this research project is conducted as an initial endeavor to use the World Bank's industrial pollution projection program Decision Support System for Integrated Pollution Control (DSS/IPC) for the assessment …

Fisheries Research Report No. 130 - Environmental Requirements And Tolerances Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) With Special Reference To Western Australia: A Review, Brett W. Molony

Fisheries Research Reports

Both Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout) and Salmo trutta (brown trout) have a long history of translocation and culture and a wide knowledge base exists. O.mykiss is being considered as a candidate for inland aquaculture in the salinity affected areas of southern Western Australia and this review aims, in part, at providing relevant information to those considering a trout-framing venture in Western Australia. Both species of trout can survive a wide range of environmental conditions, including temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia, with O.mykiss having a higher temperature tolerance than S.trutta. However, within the ranges of environmental conditions, each species …

Impact Of A Historical Translocation On Populations Of White-Tailed Deer Odocoileus Virginianus, Nathan Kendall Boddie

Theses and Dissertations

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to study the impact of a historical translocation event on populations of white-tailed deer in Georgia. The technique may also serve as a model by which management practices for other rare species can be studied. Populations from an original translocation source in Wisconsin, another Wisconsin population, and three populations in Georgia were sampled during management hunts. RAPD PCR was used to produce a genetic fingerprint for individuals of each population. Resulting band data were analyzed using PHYLIP genetic analysis software. A consensus tree of 100 bootstrapped replicates showed significant similarity between Georgia …

Hillsborough Independent Monitoring Program Technical Memorandum Lower Hillsborough River Benthic Monitoring 2000, Stephen A. Grabe, David J. Karlen, Christina M. Holden, Barbara Goetting Jun 2001

Hillsborough Independent Monitoring Program Technical Memorandum Lower Hillsborough River Benthic Monitoring 2000, Stephen A. Grabe, David J. Karlen, Christina M. Holden, Barbara Goetting

Reports

The Lower Hillsborough River system has been heavily impacted by stormwater discharges and reduction of freshwater inflow (Mote Marine Laboratory 1984; Water & Air Research Inc. 1993; Water & Air Research & SOl Environmental Services, Inc. 1994) .. A consequence has been increased salinity, the accumulation of fine-grained sediments and associated contaminants, as well as lowered DO levels. Analysis of past EPCHC data for the Lower Hillsborough River showed that benthic community characteristics (as measured by the TBBI) were not necessarily related to dissolved oxygen, salinity, or depth (Grabe and Karlen 1999; Grabe el al. 2000). The data collected through …

Miscellaneous Publication 009/2001 - Pistachios Western Australia An Income Producing Reforestation Opportunity For The Wheatbelt, Andrew Quinn

Horticulture published reports

Faced with a rising water-table, salt and acid land impacts, the Western Australian Wheatbelt requires significant changes to traditional farming system models.

Part of this drive towards improved sustainability is the need to re-plant substantial areas to tree belts or blocks. One of the limiting factors in the widescale adoption of on-farm tree planting is the narrow range of opportunities to generate income from these sites.

This report presents a model for the development of a Pistachio nut industry with production integrated into existing Wheatbelt farming systems. In addition to offering significant environmental benefits, the Pistachio tree offers the opportunity …
