Nature And Lateral Variation Of Lost Rock Limestone In The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District., Adnan A. Saadallah Jan 1964

Nature And Lateral Variation Of Lost Rock Limestone In The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District., Adnan A. Saadallah

Masters Theses

"The nature and lateral variation of a host rock limestone in the Tri-State zinc-lead district were petrographically studied within a single horizon, the M bed. This bed is a massive crinoidal limestone in the Tri- State district of southwestern Missouri, northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas and is a part of the Mississippian Keokuk Formation.

One hundred and twenty specimens from this bed were collected underground from six pull drifts in five mines: West Side, Grace B, Big John, Little Greenback, and Mudd Mines. The specimens were collected at regular intervals, usually ten to twenty feet, beginning at the edge of …

The Geology Of Eastern Wells County, North Dakota, Ronald J. Kresl Jan 1964

The Geology Of Eastern Wells County, North Dakota, Ronald J. Kresl

Theses and Dissertations

Late Wisconsinan (Pleistocene) glaciation was responsible for the varied landforms of eastern Wells County. The Burnstad-Streeter phase advanced from the north-northeast about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago and was obstructed by the elevated Missouri Coteau which caused basal shearing and subsequent movement of subglacial drift into the ice. As this ice stagnated, the resultant drift cover impeded ablation and insulated the waters of superglacial lakes present on the surface of the Coteau at that time. Abundant Pleistocene fossils have been found in the sediments of these former lakes. Upon complete ablation, characteristic dead-ice features resulted on the surface of the …

Petrology And Mineralogy Of Certain Portions Of The Fredericktown Deposits, Farouk El Baz Jan 1964

Petrology And Mineralogy Of Certain Portions Of The Fredericktown Deposits, Farouk El Baz

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Fredericktown area is part of the 'Lead Belt' district of southeastern Missouri, the major lead-producing region in the world for fifty years. The district is a typical example of the Mississippi Valley Type deposits. The ores occur in Upper Cambrian sediments overlying Precambrian rocks.

The Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn (-Co-Ni) - sulphide deposits of Fredericktown occur over a few square kilometers in sediments overlying two 'granite knobs'. The sedimentary units lap upon and pinch-out against these buried basement hills.

The basal sedimentary unit, the Lamotte Formation, is a time-transgressive, marine, submature orthoquartzite. It contains a Boulder Bed at the base or at …

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Rio Puerco, in the area of study, occupies a valley eroded in the Santa Fe formation. The silty alluvium is incised by the present channel of the Rio Puerco to a depth of 10 to 25 feet. The depth of the alluvial fill in the area is not known. The channel is 50 to 300 feet wide with braod meanders interspersed with straight reaches. The Rio Puerco is ephemeral in the lower reaches with flow produced by local rains on the watershed.

Petrography Of The Olalla Stock, Okanagan Mountains, British Columbia, James Anton Sturdevant May 1963

Petrography Of The Olalla Stock, Okanagan Mountains, British Columbia, James Anton Sturdevant

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Olalla stock is located in the Okanagan Mountains of south-central British Columbia, about 20 miles north of the international boundary. It occupies approximately 6 square miles and consists of late Mesozoic mafic and ultramafic rocks and subordinate alkalic rocks, which have intruded previously folded and metamorphosed sediments of the Triassic (?) Shoemaker Foundation.

The rocks of the stock may be broadly grouped into two major categories: (1) those formed from the differentiation of a crystallizing magma that probably entered during the Nevadan orogeny, and (2) those formed by metasomatic replacement of pyroxenite. The rocks of the first category are, …

The Geology Of The South Mountain Area, Bernalillo, Sandoval, And Santa Fe Counties, New Mexico, Tommy B. Thompson May 1963

The Geology Of The South Mountain Area, Bernalillo, Sandoval, And Santa Fe Counties, New Mexico, Tommy B. Thompson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

South Mountain is approximately 30 miles northeast of Albuquerque in the southern end of the San Pedro-Ortiz porphyry belt. It is a Tertiary monzonite laccolith that intrudes the Permian Abo and Yeso Formations and, in places, the Permian Glori eta Sandstone. The base of the laceolith lies on the Abo except in the southeastern part where it overlies the Mes eta Blanca Member of the Yeso. The incompetence of the Yeso appears to nave allowed the monzonitic magma to spread laterally throughout the stratigraphic interval up to the Glorieta Sandstone which was more resistant and broken only locally by the …

Lithostratigraphy And Correlation Of The Mississippian System In Nebraska, Marvin P. Carlson May 1963

Lithostratigraphy And Correlation Of The Mississippian System In Nebraska, Marvin P. Carlson

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

The purpose of this study is to describe and correlate rocks of Mississippian age within the state of Nebraska. Shales, generally classified as "Chattanooga" and commonly referred to as Devonian or Mississippian in the northern Mid-Continent, have been included in this study, although these shales are more generally believed to be Devonian and not Mississippian by most stratigraphers and paleontologists at the present time. Since rocks of Mississippian age are present only in the subsurface of Nebraska, the basic information for this report is derived from the microscopic study of cuttings and cores from test wells drilled within the state.

The Lower Devonian Water Canyon Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Michael E. Taylor May 1963

The Lower Devonian Water Canyon Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Michael E. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1948 Williams subdivided the Jefferson Formation of northeastern Utah into two formations. The upper formation was referred to as the Late Devonian Jefferson Formation and the lower formation the Early Devonian Water Canyon Formation (Williams, 1948, p. 1138). Since that time detailed study of the Water Canyon Formation has not been made. It is the purpose of this investigation to describe in detail the lithology and paleontology of the formation and their implication as to the environment of deposition of Early Devonian time in northeastern Utah.

The Location Of Underground Points By Means Of A Magnetic Dipole, Anthony Del Prete Jr. Jan 1963

The Location Of Underground Points By Means Of A Magnetic Dipole, Anthony Del Prete Jr.

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to design, construct, and test an electromagnet that could, from an underground location, generate a magnetic field which could be located at the surface, and that was portable enough to be carried through a cave. This could then be used to locate points in a cave relative to the surface.

A 20 foot solenoid composed of four five-foot sections was built and magnetized by a lightweight rechargeable four-cell eight volt battery. The total weight of the equipment was 30 pounds.

The magnet was calibrated by erecting it and measuring its vertical intensity with a …
