Structural Studies In The Moretown And Cram Hill Units Near Ludlow, Vermont, William J. Gregg
Structural Studies In The Moretown And Cram Hill Units Near Ludlow, Vermont, William J. Gregg
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The geology of the eastern limb of the Green Mountain Anticlinorium consists of a series of Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks with lithologic boundaries arranged in a remarkably straight trend approximately parallel to the axis of the Green Mountains. Published reports of the area, consisting largely of reconnaissance mapping, have treated this complex series of polyphase deformed rocks as an essentially upright autocthonous sedimentary sequence. Boundaries between rock units have, for the most part, been assumed to be primary in origin, as have various structural elements within the rock units. More recent work in selected areas within the Ludlow Quadrangle has revealed …
A Study Of Middle To Late Quaternary Sediments In The Karst Trap., David Lewis Rath
A Study Of Middle To Late Quaternary Sediments In The Karst Trap., David Lewis Rath
Masters Theses
"Quaternary deposits preserved in a karst trap on the Lebanon uplands a e described. The sediments represent the Yarmouthian, Illinoian, Sangamonian, and Wisconsinan Stages. The karst trap is pre-Yarmouthian in age. The lowermost deposit consists of residual fill material on which lies a well-developed Yarmouth paleosol. During the Illinoian Stage about 61 cm (2 feet) of Loveland loess was deposited over the area. Toward late Illinoian conditions favoring erosion rapidly filled the closed system, stripping the loess and reducing the residual slopes. The system stabilized during the Sangamonian Stage allowing for a thick, strong Sangamon paleosol to deve lop on …
Heavy Metal Contamination In Soil Around A Lead Smelter In Southeast Missouri, David Lewis Butherus
Heavy Metal Contamination In Soil Around A Lead Smelter In Southeast Missouri, David Lewis Butherus
Masters Theses
"In order to determine the extent of possible heavy metal contamination, more than 963 samples of leaf litter and soil were collected from 410 sample stations around the AMAX smelter in southeast Missouri. Dried samples of leaf litter and minus 80 mesh soil fractions were analyzed for cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Minus 80 mesh soil fractions were also analyzed for sulfur using x-ray fluorescence methods. Ranges of heavy metal concentrations in leaf litter were: cadmium, 0.13 μg/g to 175 μg/g; copper, 4.2 μg/g to 6500 μg/g; lead, 50 μg/g to 130,000 μg/g; and zinc, 26 …

Geology Of The North Beulah, Center, And Glenharold Lignite Mines In Mercer And Oliver Counties, Southwestern North Dakota, Roy E. Kulland
Theses and Dissertations
The geology of the North Beulah, Center, and Glenharold lignite mines in Mercer and Oliver Counties, southwestern North Dakota, were examined. Stratigraphically, all mines lie within the Sentinel Butte Formation. The North Beulah Mine lies 70 m below the top of the Sentinel Butte Formation and the Center and Glenharold Mines lie about 80 m above the base of the Tongue River Formation.
Four sedimentary types are recognized arid common to all mines; these are: silt and clay, silty sand, sand, and lignite. The silt and clay were deposited in floodbasins and shallow lakes occupying the lowest parts of the …
Glacial Stratigraphy Of Northeastern North Dakota, Howard Hobbs
Glacial Stratigraphy Of Northeastern North Dakota, Howard Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
Seven lithostratigraphic units (formations} composed dominantly of glacial sediment have been recognized in northeastern North Dakota. Three formations, the Falconer Formation (Harris and others, 1974}, the Dahlen, and Gardar Formations (Salomon, 1975). Have been previously recognized. Four formations, the Hansboro, Vang, Tiber and Cando Formations are newly recognized. Uncorrelated units of glacial sediment are described but not named. The formations are differentiated and correlated primarily by the proportion of crystalline (igneous and metamorphic rock fragments), carbonate, and shale grains in the coarse sand fraction (1 to 2 mm) of the glacial sediment. The proportion of shale grains was. Found to …

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter
The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter
Honors Papers
The city of Quezaltenango is located in southwestern Guatemala, approximately 100 kilometers WNW of Guatemala City. The volcanic features of this area represent a portion of the Central American Quaternary volcanic chain. This chain seems to be controlled by the underthrusting of the Cocos plate beneath the Americas and Caribbean plates, which occurs in the Middle American trench. The two overriding plates, which in the Caribbean finds topographical expression in the Cayman Trough. Molnar and Skyes have suggested that faults in eastern Guatemala may represent the continental extension of the transform. Stoiber and Carr feel that this plate boundary is …
Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei
Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei
Masters Theses
"Fluid inclusions in successively deposited generations of sphalerite from the Tri-State district have been examined for geothermometry as a function of time. The main stage of vug-filling sphalerite has been studied most intensively and as many as 83 fluid inclusions have been examined in a single crystal. These sphalerite crystals are commonly zoned, and their filling temperatures exhibit a general pattern of declining temperature from their cores outward, from about 135°C down to 90°C. The decline is not a steady one, but rather it is characterized by fluctuations commonly about 15-20°C. Some fluctuations have magnitudes as great as 50-60°C, with …

Geochemical And Biogeochemical Studies In The Hansonburg Mining District, New Mexico, Alan Nathan Silverman
Masters Theses
"The Hansonburg mining district is in Socorro county in south central New Mexico. A Paleozoic section of thick Pennsylvanian limestone units, thin shale and arkose layers and thick Permian units of sandstone, siltstone and gypsiferous beds interlayered with thin limestone units unconformably overlie a Precambrian basement of granite. The sedimentary rocks are folded with north trends and plunges. Northerly, some easterly and northwesterly trending faults cut the folds. Galena, fluorite, and barite mineralization occurs along some of the northerly faults and as bedded replacements and fissure fillings in the Pennsylvanian Council Spring limestone.

A Geochemical And Microscopic Study Of A Recently Discovered Deposit In Southern Illinois Fluorspar District., Prachon Chareonsri
A Geochemical And Microscopic Study Of A Recently Discovered Deposit In Southern Illinois Fluorspar District., Prachon Chareonsri
Masters Theses
"A bedding-replacement fluorite deposit, discovered by recent drilling in the northeast part of the Cave in Rock district, southern Illinois, has been studied by a combination of geochemical, X-ray, and microscopic techniques. The dispersion pattern for trace zinc, lead, cadmium and copper concentrations in carbonate host rocks adjacent to the fluorspar deposit, determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, appears to hold only little hope in serving as an aid to exploration. Only cadmium anomalies appear closely related to the known fluorspar ore, and those values are not greatly above background.
Broad zinc and cadmium anomalies and a narrow lead anomaly are …
Tertiary Welded Tuffs Of The Ryan Spring Area, Needle Range, Beaver County, Utah, Peter Carlyle Rauch
Tertiary Welded Tuffs Of The Ryan Spring Area, Needle Range, Beaver County, Utah, Peter Carlyle Rauch
Masters Theses
"The Needle Range of southwestern Utah is composed of Paleozoic sediments overlain by a thick sequence of Tertiary volcanic rocks primarily of the welded tuff class. The area has undergone at least four stages of post-eruptive structural deformation. The most significant stage is that which formed the range by normal Basin and Range type faulting. The faults strike northwest and tilt the volcanic layers northeast.
The volcanic section is composed primarily of the Needles Range Formation (Oligocene) overlain by the Isom Formation and underlain by several flows and ash flows, one of which has been tentatively correlated to the Escalante …

Problems In Interpreting Unusually Large Burrows, Richard G. Bromley, H. Allen Curran, Robert W. Frey, Raymond C. Gutschick, Lee J. Suttner
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Although marine burrows of unusually large dimensions have long been known in certain areas, they are probably much more widespread in the rock record than is generally recognized. Such burrows constitute a heterogeneous group, having little in common other than "exceptional" size. Yet their size alone unites them in difficulty of interpretation: e.g., densely spaced-dwelling burrows of combined dwelling-escape burrows as much as 12 cm in diameter and 5 m long; vertical dwelling burrows only 0.5 cm in diameter but up to 9 m long; possible escape structures as much as 24 cm in diameter and 3 m long, subsequently …

Stratigraphy Of The Upper Part Of The Fort Union Group In Southwestern Mclean County, North Dakota, Leroy A. Hemish
Theses and Dissertations
Southwestern McLean County is an area characterized by glacial topography and glacially-modified bedrock topography, with limited exposures of bedrock. Outcropping bedrock formations include the Cannonball, Tongue River, and Sentinel Butte Formations, all in the Fort Union Group of Paleocene age.
The Cannonball Formation crops out only in the southeastern part of the area studied (at Washburn), where 18 feet of laminated, gray-brown sandy mudstone is exposed. A yellow-brown, cross-bedded sand unit directly overlies the mudstone. I have tentatively selected the base of this sand unit, which is present in the subsurface throughout southwestern McLean County and reaches thicknesses of more …

Stratigraphy Of Offshore Sediment Of Lake Agassiz, North Dakota, Michael B. Arndt
Stratigraphy Of Offshore Sediment Of Lake Agassiz, North Dakota, Michael B. Arndt
Theses and Dissertations
Lake Agassiz occupied the Red River Valley between about 13,800 and 9,000 years ago. The Late Wisconsinan ice sheet that covered the Red River Valley retreated far enough to expose the drainage divide in northern South Dakota and south-central Minnesota sometime after 14,000 B.P. and meltwater ponded behind this divide in Richland County. Before 13,800 the ice readvanced over this area and then retreated again. As the ice margin retreated northward, deposition of the Argusville and Wylie Formations took place. Sometime before 12,800 the ice advanced again into the Red River Valley as far as Traill County; the terminus of …

Classification Of Surficial Materials, James Hadley Williams
Classification Of Surficial Materials, James Hadley Williams
Doctoral Dissertations
"A surficial materials classification system has been designed to fit the needs of a geologist in mapping and classifying surficial materials. The system developed in this study is intended primarily for analysis of surficial materials where time-stratigraphic markers are not applicable or recognized. Primary classification is based on fabric and mode of origin supplemented by data on engineering and pedologic properties.
Several types of classification systems presently exist for use in soil investigations. Only three of these systems have found widespread acceptance, two serving the engineering profession and the other the needs of the soil scientist. These systems are not …
Geochemistry And Petrology Of The Orbicular Rocks, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Robert David Enz
Geochemistry And Petrology Of The Orbicular Rocks, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Robert David Enz
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Orbicular rock located on the west side of the Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, at W. long. 106° 29' 30", N. lat. 35° 13' 04", was first reported by Fitzsimmons (1966). Recently Thompson and Giles (1974) published a paper describing.three types of orbicular rock in the locality which they believed to have been formed by a metasomatic process. Without knowledge of the work of Thompson and Giles, this thesis was initiated as a detailed field, petrographic, geochemical and geochronologic study of these orbicular rocks.
Four types of orbicular rock, including another previously unreported occurrence of orbicular granite about 2 km north …
An Experimental Investigation Of Highly Undercooled Magnesium Silicate Chondrule-Like Spherules, Harry Nicholas Planner
An Experimental Investigation Of Highly Undercooled Magnesium Silicate Chondrule-Like Spherules, Harry Nicholas Planner
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
A series of experiments, involving molten magnesium silicate spherules that were subjected to high initial cooling rates and allowed to nucleate at high temperatures (985-1350°C), were performed so as to compare their thermal histories to the resulting internal features. Such comparisons could be used to decipher the thermal history of chondrules and the conditions surrounding their formation based on their mineralogy, crystal morphology, and overall texture. Various features of the spherules were correlated with the initial high cooling rate process, nucleation temperature, and the maximum temperature attained during the recalescance to demonstrate the restrictions resulting from or their sensitivities to …

Unusual Lavas From Molokai, Hawaii: Alkalic Olivine Basalts Transitional To Hawaiites And Strontium-Rich Mugearites, Paul Frank Hlava
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
ABSTRACT
Systematic data has recently been published on the compositions of major mineral phases in rocks of the tholeiitic, alkalic, and nephelinic suites from the island of Maui, Hawaii. The present study was initiated to provide similar data from the rocks of Molokai, Hawaii, from which the nature of interisland variations could be established. During the study, it became obvious that many of the rocks were unusual and so this study also provides information on the bulk rock, trace element, and mineral compositions of alkalic olivine basalts transitional to hawaiites and Sr-rich mugearites.
From a total of 14 basalts collected …
