Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Cadmium, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

Cadmium is a metallic element that occurs naturally in the earth's crust, especially in zinc-, lead-, and copper-bearing ores (Forstner and Whittmann, 1981). Pure cadmium is a soft silver-white metal, but is rarely found naturally in its pure form. It is commonly combined with other elements, such as oxygen (cadmium oxide) and sulfur (cadmium sulfate).

Cavity-Based Secondary Mineralization In Volcanic Tuffs Of Yucca Mountain, Nevada: A New Type Of The Polymineral Vadose Speleothem, Or A Hydrothermal Deposit?, Yuri V. Dublyansky, Sergey Z. Smirnov

International Journal of Speleology

Secondary minerals (calcite, chalcedony, quartz, opal, fl uorite, heulandite, strontianite) residing in open cavities in the Miocene rhyolite tuffs of Yucca Mountain, Nevada have been interpreted by some researchers as "speleothemic" formations, deposited as a result of downward infi ltration of meteoric waters (DOE, 2001, Whelan et al., 2002). The major mineral of the paragenesis, calcite, shows spectacular trend of the textural and crystal morphology change: from anhedral granular occurrences, through (optional) platelet, bladed and scepter varieties, to euhedral blocky morphologies. The trend is consistent with the overall decrease in the supesaturation of the mineral forming solution. Stable isotope properties …

Conceptualisation Of Speleogenesis In Multi-Storey Artesian Systems: A Model Of Transverse Speleogenesis, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2005

Conceptualisation Of Speleogenesis In Multi-Storey Artesian Systems: A Model Of Transverse Speleogenesis, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

Conceptual and respective quantitative models of speleogenesis/karstification developed for unconfined aquifers do not adequately represent speleogenesis in confined settings. A conceptual model for speleogenesis in confined settings is suggested, based on views about hydraulic continuity in artesian basins and close cross-formation communication between aquifers in multi-storey artesian systems. Soluble units sandwiched between insoluble porous/fissured formations (common aquifers) initially serve as low permeability beds separating aquifers in a confined system. Conduits evolve as result of vertical hydraulic communication between aquifers across the soluble bed ("transverse speleogenesis"). Recharge from the adjacent aquifer is dispersed and uniform, and flow paths across the soluble …

Reevaluation Of Species Concepts Of Uppermost Cretaceous Unionidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) : Hell Creek Formation, Montana, U.S.A., Marron J. Bingle Jan 2005

Reevaluation Of Species Concepts Of Uppermost Cretaceous Unionidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) : Hell Creek Formation, Montana, U.S.A., Marron J. Bingle

Theses and Dissertations

Species are the basic units of life relative to taxonomy, and a practical definition of species is imperative to paleontology in order to promote reproducible, unambiguous criteria for accurately interpreting past species relationships. The need for a well-defined rubric for identifying species is evident in the freshwater mussel assemblage (Family Unionidae) in the Hell Creek Formation. The Hell Creek Formation unionid species were first described by Whitfield in 1903 and 1907. His descriptions were often based on differences of a single trait. In 1976, Russell reevaluated the original species descriptions, I but still based the classification of species on only …

Isotopic Tracers As Evidence Of Denitrification In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Eben J. Spencer Jan 2005

Isotopic Tracers As Evidence Of Denitrification In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Eben J. Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

The Karlsruhe Aquifer of north-central North Dakota has experienced considerable nitrate contamination sparking an investigation by the North Dakota State Water Commission. Certain portions of the aquifer have experienced nitrate-N concentrations of up to seven times the drinking water standard. Although contamination is evident it is possible the NO₃¯ is naturally being eliminated by denitrification, whereby bacteria reduce NO₃¯ to nitrogen gas. Evidence of denitrification may be illustrated by accelerated reduction of NO₃¯ relative to the conservative tracer Cl¯ coupled with an increase in the heavy isotopes of 15N and 18O within the NO₃¯ ion. Such an increase is not …

The Early To Middle Ordovician Graptolite Faunal Succession Of The Trail Creek Region, Central Idaho, U.S.A., Jörg Maletz, Daniel Goldman, M. Cone Jan 2005

The Early To Middle Ordovician Graptolite Faunal Succession Of The Trail Creek Region, Central Idaho, U.S.A., Jörg Maletz, Daniel Goldman, M. Cone

Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

The Middle Ordovician graptolite biostratigraphy of the Trail Creek region of Idaho is reviewed and revised. The oldest known fauna belongs to the Didymograptellus bifidus Biozone. The Isograptus victoriae lunatus, I. victoriae maximodivergens, Oncograptus, Undulograptus austrodentatus and Holmograptus lentus Biozones can be differentiated. Pseudophyllograptus archaios (Braithwaite) is found for the first time in the Trail Creek region. This species represents a conspicuous North American mid-continent faunal element and enables the correlation of the endemic P. archaios-C. flexilis Biozone of Utah with the D. bifidus Biozone of the Pacific faunal realm, thus, providing an important tool for the correlation of endemic …

Chinese City Design: Searching History In Order To Find A Balanced And Sustainable Future, Andrew Armbruster Jan 2005

Chinese City Design: Searching History In Order To Find A Balanced And Sustainable Future, Andrew Armbruster

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The Chinese city faces a crisis. As development on a scale unprecedented in human history consumes this country, little care is being taken to ensure the survival of age-old traditions and the concrete principles that accompany those traditions. Western ideas seep into the country, and this produces an effect of imbalance [see Figure A]. This imbalance is not only cultural but is accompanied with all of the derivatives pertaining thereto: physical disharmony, economic imbalance, environmental unsustainability. Considering this, what needs to change within the contemporary Chinese city? To this question one must answer that the fundamental bases which underlie the …

Geomechanics Applied To Reservoir Development In The Coso Geothermal Field, Andrew J. Nygren Jan 2005

Geomechanics Applied To Reservoir Development In The Coso Geothermal Field, Andrew J. Nygren

Theses and Dissertations

The Coso geothermal field is located approximately 220 kilometers north of Los Angeles, CA. In 2002, a project began to develop the east flank of the Coso geothermal field into an enhanced geothermal system (EGS); in such a system water is injected via injection well(s) into hot dry basement rock through naturally occurring or stimulated fractures. The injected water gathers heat from the reservoir rock before being extracted for direct use or energy production. To develop such a reservoir, adequate understanding of the reservoir geomechanics is necessary. This thesis investigates the state of stress and rock fractures, the existing permeable …

Transient Detection And Modeling Of Continuous Geodetic Data, Walter Michael Szeliga Jan 2005

Transient Detection And Modeling Of Continuous Geodetic Data, Walter Michael Szeliga

All Master's Theses

Transient surface deformation has been observed by continuously operating Global Positioning System stations in the Puget Sound area during the past decade. This surface deformation is associated with processes occurring on or near the subducting plate boundary between the Juan de Fuca and North American plates. This thesis is composed of two studies of transient deformation along the Cascadia plate margin and a discussion of the methodologies employed in these studies. We model one 7-week episode of transient deformation that occurred during 2003 beneath the Puget Sound area. Additionally, we utilize a combination of continuous Global Positioning System and seismic …

Native Or Introduced? Fossil Pollen And Spores May Say. An Example From The Azores Islands, Jacqueline F.N. Van Leeuwen, Hanno Schäfer, W. O. Van Der Knapp, Tammy M. Rittenour, Svante Björck, Brigitta Ammann

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Aim: Among the various possible approaches to assess whether a species is native or introduced, the analysis of subfossil pollen and spores from natural archives is a valuable tool. Requirements include a sufficiently high taxonomic resolution of the pollen morphology, as well as sufficient temporal and spatial resolution. The aim of this study is to show the usefulness of this method in solving whether the taxon is native or introduced.

Location: The results are derived from two islands of the Azores: Flores and Pico. Methods: Analysis of pollen and spores in lake sediments; radiocarbon dating of the studied sediments.

Results: …

High Dispersal In A Frog Species Suggest That It Is Vulnerable To Habitat Fragmentation, W. Chris Funk, Allison E. Greene, Paul Stephen Corn, Fred W. Allendorf Jan 2005

High Dispersal In A Frog Species Suggest That It Is Vulnerable To Habitat Fragmentation, W. Chris Funk, Allison E. Greene, Paul Stephen Corn, Fred W. Allendorf

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Global losses of amphibian populations are a major conservation concern and have generated substantial debate over their causes. Habitat fragmentation is considered one important cause of amphibian decline. However, if fragmentation is to be invoked as a mechanism of amphibian decline, it must first be established that dispersal is prevalent among contiguous amphibian populations using formal movement estimators. In contrast, if dispersal is naturally low in amphibians, fragmentation can be disregarded as a cause of amphibian declines and conservation efforts can be focused elsewhere. We examined dispersal rates in Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) using capture– recapture analysis …

Population Structure Of Columbia Spotted Frogs (Rana Luteiventris) Is Strongly Affected By The Landscape, W. Chris Funk, Michael S. Blouin, Paul Stephen Corn, Bryce A. Maxell, David S. Pilliod, Stephen Amish, Fred W. Allendorf Jan 2005

Population Structure Of Columbia Spotted Frogs (Rana Luteiventris) Is Strongly Affected By The Landscape, W. Chris Funk, Michael S. Blouin, Paul Stephen Corn, Bryce A. Maxell, David S. Pilliod, Stephen Amish, Fred W. Allendorf

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Landscape features such as mountains, rivers, and ecological gradients may strongly affect patterns of dispersal and gene flow among populations and thereby shape population dynamics and evolutionary trajectories. The landscape may have a particularly strong effect on patterns of dispersal and gene flow in amphibians because amphibians are thought to have poor dispersal abilities. We examined genetic variation at six microsatellite loci in Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) from 28 breeding ponds in western Montana and Idaho, USA, in order to investigate the effects of landscape structure on patterns of gene flow. We were particularly interested in addressing …
