Receiver Function Imaging Of The Mantle Transition Zone Beneath The East Sayan Mountains And Adjacent Area In Central Asia: Implications For Lithospheric Drip And Intraplate Cenozoic Volcanism, Yangyang Liao, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
To provide constraints on the formation mechanisms of intracontinental volcanisms and intriguing lithospheric thickness variations in the East Sayan Mountains and surrounding areas, we stack P-to-s receiver functions to image the 410-km and 660-km discontinuities. Mantle transition zone (MTZ) thickening observed in a continuous area is attributable to ancient slab remnants, and Cenozoic volcanisms in the peripheral area can be explained by slab dehydration. The thinning of the MTZ in the Tuva-Mongolian Massif can be explained by mantle upwelling branches induced by slab subduction. Our results reveal an approximately circular area in the MTZ that is significantly thicker than usual, …

Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing Captures Geometry And Slow-To-Fast Sliding Transition Of The 2017 Mud Creek Landslide, Alexander L. Handwerger, Pascal Lacroix, Andrew F. Bell, Adam M. Booth, Mong-Han Huang, Simon M. Mudd, Roland Bürgmann, Eric J. Fielding
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Landslides pose a significant hazard worldwide. Despite advances in landslide monitoring, predicting their size, timing, and location remains a major challenge. We revisit the 2017 Mud Creek landslide in California using radar interferometry, pixel tracking, and elevation change measurements from satellite and airborne radar, lidar, and optical data. Our analysis shows that pixel tracking of optical imagery captured the transition from slow motion to runaway acceleration starting ~ 1 month before catastrophic failure—an acceleration undetected by satellite InSAR alone. Strain rate maps revealed a new slip surface formed within the landslide body during acceleration, likely a key weakening mechanism. Failure …
Understanding Ore Deposit Scale Controls On Au Enrichment In Carlin-Type Au Mineralization: A High-Resolution Study Of The Rita K Deposit, Conner T. Callaway
Understanding Ore Deposit Scale Controls On Au Enrichment In Carlin-Type Au Mineralization: A High-Resolution Study Of The Rita K Deposit, Conner T. Callaway
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Controls on the distribution of gold (Au) within the Rita K Carlin-type deposit are poorly understood. The primary Au-bearing carbonate unit Wispy, is a bioturbated muddy limestone with debris flow clasts that range in size but are typically >5 cm occurring in the lower sections. The orebody is described as a syncline-anticline pair that hosts high-grade Au ore in the fold hinges. The spatial relationship between Au mineralization and fold hinges suggests that shortening due to folding is an important mechanism producing Au-enriched zones. However, the exact mechanism of Au enrichment and deposit-scale controls on Au distribution and fluid evolution …
Mechanisms Of Gold Enrichment In Seafloor Massive Sulfide Deposits: A Study On The Higashi-Aogashima Hydrothermal Field, Claudia Martinez
Mechanisms Of Gold Enrichment In Seafloor Massive Sulfide Deposits: A Study On The Higashi-Aogashima Hydrothermal Field, Claudia Martinez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The study of Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMS) deposit formation is vital for assessing both the economic potential and environmental risks posed by future marine mining projects. Metal-rich SMS deposits form in hydrothermal vent systems within tectonically active regions, such as back-arc basins, where faults enhance crustal permeability, enabling fluid migration driven by magmatic heat sources at depth in the crust. Currently our understanding of SMS formation processes is based on bulk-rock geochemical and isotopic data, lacking the necessary spatial and temporal resolution to understand ore forming processes. As a result, critical gaps remain in understanding the exact mechanisms responsible for …
Quantifying Erosion Rates Of The Mission Hills Along The Calaveras, Mission, And Hayward Faults In Northern California To Better Understand The Role Of Fault Geometry On Surface Topography, Ian Duncan Lord
Master's Theses
The San Francisco Bay Area lacks publications on erosion rates and their relationship to restraining bend fault geometry. This thesis presents a detailed geochronologic study of erosion rates from the Mission Hills along the Calaveras, Mission, and Hayward faults located northeast of San Jose, California. The goals are to provide erosion rate values where none currently exist and to gain a better understanding of how fault geometry influences topography along restraining bends. To quantify the erosion rate of these faults, river sediments containing 10Be were collected from 14 catchments using well-established protocols. Of the successfully processed samples, the erosion rates …
A Groundwater Flow System Investigation In The Upper Rowena Creek Drainage, Oregon, Catelee Yamei Kambur
A Groundwater Flow System Investigation In The Upper Rowena Creek Drainage, Oregon, Catelee Yamei Kambur
Dissertations and Theses
Groundwater level declines are a growing concern within the upper Rowena Creek drainage, Oregon. This area is home to a small community located on the upper limb of the Columbia Hills anticline, where local residents rely on aquifers within the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) for domestic water supplies. Groundwater level declines in CRBG aquifers have been studied more extensively in the Mosier area, which lies approximately 5 miles to the northwest of Rowena, but there has been little research conducted specifically on the upper Rowena Creek drainage area. Rowena is located higher up the dip of the Columbia Hills …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The oblique convergence of the Indian and Eurasian plates drives significant deformation in the crust and mantle beneath Myanmar. However, the crustal deformation in the Indo-Burman Ranges (IBR) and mantle flow beneath Myanmar and adjacent areas remain unclear due to limited studies. We utilized data from the newly deployed second phase of the China-Myanmar Geophysical Survey of the Myanmar Orogen array to perform shear wave splitting analysis of PKS, SKKS, and SKS (XKS) phases. Our results, together with previous findings, provide new insights into mantle flow and crustal deformation across central Myanmar. In the IBR, we observed a transition from …
Kinematic Representations Of Viscoelastic Postseismic Deformation, John Loveless, Brendan J. Meade
Kinematic Representations Of Viscoelastic Postseismic Deformation, John Loveless, Brendan J. Meade
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Abstract Following large earthquakes, viscoelastic stress relaxation may contribute to postseismic deformation observed at Earth's surface. Mechanical representations of viscoelastic deformation require a constitutive relationship for the lower crust/upper mantle material where stresses are diffused and, for non‐linear rheologies, knowledge of absolute stress level. Here, we describe a kinematic approach to representing
geodetically observed postseismic motions that does not require an assumed viscoelastic rheology. The core idea is to use observed surface motions to constrain time‐dependent displacement boundary conditions applied at the base of the elastic upper crust by viscoelastic motions in the lower crust/upper mantle, approximating
these displacements as …
Diagenesis And Controls On Porosity And Permeability In The Upper San Andres Formation Of West Texas, Jack Butcher
Diagenesis And Controls On Porosity And Permeability In The Upper San Andres Formation Of West Texas, Jack Butcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
West Texas reservoirs on the Central Basin Platform (CBP) are dominated by Permian-age carbonate deposits, significantly contributing to petroleum production. The Upper Permian-aged San Andres Formation, composed primarily of dolomite and limestone, is a prolific reservoir. This study assesses diagenetic influences on porosity and permeability within the San Andres Formation along the northern CBP. Two cores from the Monument 4-2 and Peterson 1 wells in West Texas were analyzed using core descriptions, thin section petrography, XRD, XRF, and MICP. Results indicate that dolomitization enhances porosity, with intercrystalline and moldic porosity being dominant, while late-stage cementation and compaction reduce permeability. XRD …
The Origin And Geologic History Of Dolostones Associated With The Moab Valley Salt Wall, Paradox Basin, Utah, Charles Ojodale Igomu
The Origin And Geologic History Of Dolostones Associated With The Moab Valley Salt Wall, Paradox Basin, Utah, Charles Ojodale Igomu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the origin and geologic context of dolostones associated with the Moab Valley salt wall in southeastern Utah, a feature within the broader Paradox Basin that offers an exceptional opportunity to study the interplay between carbonate sedimentation, diagenesis, and salt diapirism. The fundamental research question focuses on evaluating whether dolostones observed in the Moab Valley are all depositional, diagenetic or structurally reworked components of deeper stratigraphy, and how their presence and geometry relate to the halokinetic processes that shaped sedimentation across the Moab Valley. This study tested the hypothesis that dolostones within Moab Valley represent a mixed assemblage …
Heat Storage Using High Temperature Borehole Heat Exchangers, Jack Horvath
Heat Storage Using High Temperature Borehole Heat Exchangers, Jack Horvath
All Theses
The use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power is growing, and with it comes an increased need to store excess energy when it is generated and release it on demand. Moderate temperature thermal energy storage in the subsurface is widely used to heat buildings, but high temperatures, greater than 120℃, are required to power generators that convert stored heat to electricity. High temperature heat can be generated from solar collectors or other means and then transferred to the subsurface using borehole heat exchangers (BHE). A BHE consists of a closed-loop pipe system used to circulate a …
Understanding The Fluid Source During Alteration Of Former Oceanic Lithosphere In The Polygenetic Ingalls Ophiolite Complex, Washington, Usa, Zachary Russell Stevens
Understanding The Fluid Source During Alteration Of Former Oceanic Lithosphere In The Polygenetic Ingalls Ophiolite Complex, Washington, Usa, Zachary Russell Stevens
Masters Theses
The Ingalls Ophiolite Complex is an ophiolite of Jurassic age in central WA, USA. Much of the complex formed in a supra-subduction zone setting in a back-arc ocean basin during subduction of the Farallon plate beginning 192 Ma. Between formation and obduction, mafic and ultramafic lithologies experienced alteration in the presence of water, which previous studies inferred to be seawater. Previously published δ¹⁸O and δD data from the Ingalls indicates isotopic depletion possibly caused by interaction with meteoric water at current latitude (~47.5 °N). The current study reports new δD, δ¹⁸O, and Δ ′¹⁷O measurements from mafic and ultramafic lithologies …

Fourteen production wells were installed at Murche, four at Dalle, and additional test wells at Murche, Dalle, Chefe Kora, and Huluku. Transmissivity values and the number of wells at Murche suggest that local water needs are currently being met. In contrast, fewer wells were drilled at Dalle. This reflects the high cost of well construction relative to yield, …
High-Resolution Event Stratigraphy Of Ostracods In The Ozan Formation Of Texas And Arkansas, Denali L. John
High-Resolution Event Stratigraphy Of Ostracods In The Ozan Formation Of Texas And Arkansas, Denali L. John
Master's Theses
This study focuses on the high-resolution event stratigraphic framework of the lower Campanian Ozan Formation in Northeast (NE) Texas and Southwest AR which is richly fossiliferous in ostracods. Little research has been published on the Ozan Formation and even less dealing with Ozan ostracods. Additionally, correlation of Upper Cretaceous units between Texas and AR is controversial due to the general lack of good exposures in both regions and extensive faulting in Northeast Texas despite similar depositional environment across the region. This study calibrates the ranges of ostracods and creates an event stratigraphic composite that is orders of magnitude higher in …
Cooling Climate Across Last Interglacial High Stands On San Salvador And Great Inagua, The Bahamas, Ian Winkelstern, Sierra Petersen, H. Allen Curran, Cecilie Phillips, Alex Quizon, Bosiljka Glumac, David Griffing
Cooling Climate Across Last Interglacial High Stands On San Salvador And Great Inagua, The Bahamas, Ian Winkelstern, Sierra Petersen, H. Allen Curran, Cecilie Phillips, Alex Quizon, Bosiljka Glumac, David Griffing
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
The last interglacial (LIG) is the last time global climate was about as warm as today, with global sea-levels several metres higher. The LIG probably had a re- duced latitudinal temperature gradient, with warmer poles and cooler tropics than today. Well-constrained records from low latitudes can test this overall model. We used bivalve shells sampled from six localities thought to expose the LIG age Cockburn Town Member of the Grotto Beach Formation on both San Salvador and Great Inagua Islands, The Bahamas. Previous work described two LIG depositional intervals: older ‘Reef I’ and younger ‘Reef II’, separated by a disconformity. …
Terrane Accretion In The Trollheimen And Dovrefjell Regions Of The Scandinavian Caledonides, Norway, Stephanie Georgevich
Terrane Accretion In The Trollheimen And Dovrefjell Regions Of The Scandinavian Caledonides, Norway, Stephanie Georgevich
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Following closure of the Iapetus Ocean, the paleocontinents of Laurentia and Baltica collided to form the Caledonian Orogeny. During this closure and subsequent collision, island arc terranes and microcontinents were accreted and subducted underneath the Norwegian continental margin. These terranes are preserved in central Norway, specifically in the Dovrefjell and Trollheimen mountain ranges. The order in which these terranes accreted to the continent and when this occurred is not well understood. To determine this stacking order, I will be using P-T path modeling, U-Pb zircon dating, and structural position. Knowing the degree, progression, and geologic age of metamorphism, and tectonostratigraphic …
Using Geomorphic Change And Sediment Modeling To Calculate Debris Flow Volumes From The 2020 El Dorado Wildfire In The Southern San Bernardino Mountains, California, Sevag Injean
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Four years after the occurrence of the 2020 El Dorado Fire, Yucaipa Ridge and the surrounding communities of Oak Glen and Forest Falls still experience the devastation caused by debris flows. Wildfires can instigate a series of events leading to hydrophobic soils, loss of vegetation, and increased sediment availability which amplify post-fire debris flow risks. This study tested the hypothesis that post-wildfire geomorphic changes can be accurately quantified and predicted using high-resolution LiDAR-derived digital elevation models. To investigate this hypothesis, multi-temporal LiDAR datasets were analyzed to quantify geomorphic changes, including erosion and deposition, within two severely burned basins in the …

Explainable Machine Learning Surrogate Modeling For Exit Gradient Prediction In Hydraulic Structures Using Numerical Simulations, Prayas Rath, Jianting Zhu, Kevin M. Befus
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Accurate prediction of exit gradients is essential for designing impounding hydraulic structures, such as dams and levees, to mitigate seepage-induced piping failures. Conventional analytical methods often neglect boundary effects and anisotropy, limiting their applicability in complex geological settings. This study develops an XGBoost-based machine learning surrogate model trained and tested on 8,000 MODFLOW numerical simulations to predict exit gradients under varying hydraulic and geological conditions. The data set covers numerous parameters, including anisotropy, head differences, structure width, cut-off wall depth, aquifer thickness, and uninterrupted riverbed length. The coefficient of determination for test data is 0.88, demonstrating reliable exit gradient prediction …
Geochemical And Stratigraphic Characterization Of The Morrison Formation And Cedar Mountain Formation Contact In The Island Park Quadrangle, Uintah County, Utah, Emily Mcdermott
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation and Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation are among the richest sources of dinosaur fossils. Despite a 24-million-year gap in time (the Jurassic–Cretaceous unconformity), these formations are difficult to distinguish due to their similar rock types and colors. In Utah's Island Park quadrangle (IPQ), these formations are not separated on existing geological maps. This study focuses on identifying and understanding the formational boundary between them using field observations, stable isotope analysis, clay mineralogy, and chemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
Unlike other areas where a conglomerate layer marks the boundary, the …
Evaluating Uplift At The Leading Edge Of The Yellowstone Hotspot - A Study Of The Shoshone River Drainage, Emma Tombaugh
Evaluating Uplift At The Leading Edge Of The Yellowstone Hotspot - A Study Of The Shoshone River Drainage, Emma Tombaugh
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The stationary mantle plume (or hotspot) underlying the Yellowstone region has caused parts of the surrounding landscape to rise as the continental plate migrates over it. However, scientists do not fully agree on the spatial pattern of this uplift and few measurements of the landscape have been made to provide estimates of uplift rates. To better understand uplift patterns and rates, this study examines the Shoshone River, which flows across the predicted zone of highest uplift at the northeastern, leading edge of the hotspot. Digital-terrain analysis is used to measure channel steepness and field and imagery approaches are used to …
Role Of Quartz Grain Size And Saturation On Fault Strength And Frictional Healing, Sapana Regmi
Role Of Quartz Grain Size And Saturation On Fault Strength And Frictional Healing, Sapana Regmi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Rocks near the Earth's surface (less than 5 kilometers deep) often break and grind against one another to create crushed rock materials known as fault gouge. These fault gouges are filled with fragmented particles and broken rocks, which vary in grain size over time and space due to repeated earthquakes. This variation in grain size distribution along fault gouge can affect the strength of the fault, how it slips during an earthquake and how it 'heals' or recovers strength between earthquakes. Further, fault gouges often contain water from underground sources, which can influence how they slip. Previous studies have examined …
Measuring The Impact On Landscape And Sediment Transport Of Climate And Anthropogenic Influence In The Mississippi River Since 2000 Bce, Bailey Wycoff
Measuring The Impact On Landscape And Sediment Transport Of Climate And Anthropogenic Influence In The Mississippi River Since 2000 Bce, Bailey Wycoff
LSU Master's Theses
Understanding river dynamics is crucial to being able to interpret the geological history preserved in sediment deposited on continental margins, deltas, and alluvial plains. Sediment buffering can be a key control on the sediment flux to the ocean and involves sediment storage and recycling in flood plains. The efficiency of the transport varies depending on climatic and more recently anthropogenic influences. Sediment moving through meandering streams may be temporarily deposited in a point bar on the convex side of a meandering river. Meanders are sometimes cut off, creating an oxbow lake and filled in. The area of study, False River, …
Using Triple Oxygen Isotopes To Investigate Water Usage In Desert Ecosystems, Cloe V. Knutson
Using Triple Oxygen Isotopes To Investigate Water Usage In Desert Ecosystems, Cloe V. Knutson
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
In arid environments, maintaining water balance can be more critical for survival than obtaining food. As droughts intensify, understanding how animals manage body water is essential. Triple oxygen isotope analysis provides a novel way to trace water sources in animals, distinguishing contributions from free water, food-derived oxygen, and atmospheric O2. We developed an equilibration method using CO2–H2O oxygen exchange and measured δ’18O and Δ’17O values via tunable infrared laser direct spectroscopy (TILDAS). Validated against traditional fluorination methods, this technique enables streamlined analysis of whole blood and plant samples. Applied to …

Deformation And Earthquake Potential On The North America - Caribbean - Cocos Triple Junction In Guatemala, Jeremy Maurer, Andreas Eckert, Qiaoqi Sun, Jonathan Obrist-Farner
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The triple junction between the Cocos (CO), North American (NA), and Caribbean (CA) tectonic plates in Guatemala is a region of high seismic risk and includes many large faults and historic earthquakes. Previous analyses of the tectonic system have been overly simplified, resulting in discrepancies between geologically derived and geodetic models of fault slip rate. This study leverages available geodetic, seismic, and geologic data to develop new strain rate maps and faulting models for the region. We find that locking on the regional faults matches historic reports of large earthquakes and that multiple minor fault segments are active and accommodate …

Study Of Anomalous Variations In Seismic And Non-Seismic Parameters Using Machine Learning Techniques To Develop The Earthquake Forecasting Model In The Himalayan Belt, Senthil Kumar M
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding and forecasting earthquakes is not just about science it’s about saving lives, even as the dynamic and hidden nature of Earth's tectonic processes makes this an intricate challenge. The Himalayan belt is one of the most seismically active regions globally due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Investigating this region is essential for understanding highly complicated tectonic mechanisms and reducing substantial hazards posed to millions of people by persistent and intense seismic events. This study aims to enhance forecasting methodologies by applying machine learning techniques while dealing with the inherent challenges of geological complexity and …
One Year Of Analysis Of Pfas Contamination In Surface Waters Of The West Plains Region Of Spokane County, Jerusha R. Hampson
One Year Of Analysis Of Pfas Contamination In Surface Waters Of The West Plains Region Of Spokane County, Jerusha R. Hampson
2025 Symposium
The West Plains has been significantly impacted by PFAS contamination due to the decades-long use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) for firefighting training at both Fairchild Air Force Base (FAFB) and the Spokane International Airport (SIA). Groundwater contamination is significant, but less work had been done to understand contamination in surface waters. We now have over a year of data with most locations were sampled seasonally. Though FAFB and SIA are likely sources for some of the contamination, other, smaller sources exist. Surface waters are important to study as they form the boundaries of the West Plains and often function …

Framework For Mapping Sublimation Features On Mars’ South Polar Cap Using Object-Based Image Analysis, Racine D. Cleveland, Vincent F. Chevrier, Jason A. Tullis
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mars’ south polar cap hosts dynamic landforms known as Swiss cheese features (SCFs), which form through the sublimation of carbon dioxide (CO2) ice driven by the planet’s extreme seasonal and diurnal solar insolation cycles. These shallow, rounded depressions—first identified by Mars Global Surveyor in 1999 and later monitored by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)—have been observed to increase in size over time. However, large-scale analysis of SCF formation and growth has been limited by the slow and labor-intensive nature of manual mapping techniques. This study applies object-based image analysis (OBIA) to automate the detection and measurement of SCFs using High-Resolution …
