The environmental benefits of electric vehicle (EV) adoption depend on more than replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric powertrains. EV adoption reshapes electricity demand, interacts with regional generation mixes, and influences travel behavior and congestion, creating a coupled transportation-energy system in which vehicle and power-plant emissions must be evaluated together. This dissertation develops machine-learning frameworks for predicting energy consumption and emissions from vehicles and power grids under rising EV adoption. The first component forecasts grid emissions from EV charging. Using simulation data from NREL's Cambium database, a Prophet-based time-series framework predicts carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane emission rates …

BreadQuest is a top-down roguelike dungeon crawler with a whimsical dessert theme that aims to make the genre more accessible while preserving strategic depth and replayability. Players explore procedurally generated dungeons, fight pastry-themed enemies, and collect bakery-inspired items that support a flavor-elemental combat system, with each run offering unique layouts, encounters, and rewards. Built in Unity with a modular, data-driven architecture, the game uses procedural generation techniques like Binary Space Partitioning, Voronoi diagrams, and Perlin noise to create varied and replayable levels. The project emphasizes approachable gameplay, cultural dessert inspiration, and replayability, with success evaluated through playtesting and player feedback.

Fact-Checker is a web application that allows users to fact-check YouTube videos. It feeds YouTube’s closed captioning transcript to a large language model (LLM) to extract claims. It then uses multiple LLMs, such as Gemini, Llama, and Claude, to verify these claims. The modular design makes it easy to change to a different LLM or model if needed. The application is built using Python for access to Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and Streamlit as the front-end framework. There is no central location where new hires and administrators can track onboarding progress. Both parties have to manage multiple email chains and write their own reminders to keep track of everything. This leads to delays, missing deadlines, and confusion for both parties. In modern artificial intelligence systems, there is an acute need to understand the decision-making logic of "black box" algorithms. Our research proposes an innovative method for increasing the transparency of such systems through the formalization of fuzzy explanatory mechanisms. We have developed an extension of existing ontological approaches by introducing the concept of fuzziness into the structure of explanatory properties, which allows overcoming the fundamental limitations of traditional XAI methods. Over the past two decades, Virginia has invested substantially in STEM education, in part through specialized programs focused on computer science and information technology (CS/IT). This study represents the first effort to identify Virginia’s specialized secondary CS/IT programs and examine them collectively. Findings from the statewide environmental scan indicate that the programs are delivered through a wide variety of institutional structures, including Governor’s STEM Academies, Governor’s Schools, specialty centers, and academies, but most often through Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers. Programs tend to be concentrated in metropolitan areas, and some rural divisions may not be served. The programs provide …

Accurate crop monitoring is essential for optimizing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security. This study presents a comprehensive deep learning framework for image crop type recognition, health status prediction, and disease detection using multiple Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models. The proposed approach uses open-source datasets consisting of five crop types (apple, corn, grape, potato, tomato), varying health conditions, and common diseases. By deploying specialized CNN architecture focused on each task, the system achieves a high accuracy of 99.25% in classifying crop types, identifying health status, and detecting specific diseases. Procedural terrain generation, the algorithmic creation of digital terrain, finds use in multiple types of digital media. As the capabilities of modern computation increase, the ability to create more and more realistic terrains fully procedurally at scale improves. Modern methods of procedural generation have also overlapped with these advances, most notably advances in hardware. To account for this, a survey was done of modern methods for procedural terrain generation. Smooth procedural noise functions are one of the backbones of procedural terrain generation. This has motivated our research project, which aims to capture dance movements using wearable sensors and translate the information into meaningful visualizations to help dancers improve their skills. Traditionally, researchers rely on statistical methods and machine learning models to predict crimes using historical data. This study compares the performance of deep learning models, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Transformer, in predicting stock prices across five companies (AAPL, CSCO, META, MSFT, and TSLA) from July 2019 to July 2023. Key findings reveal that GRU models generally exhibit the lowest Mean Absolute Error (MAE), indicating higher precision, particularly notable for CSCO with a remarkably low MAE. While LSTM models often show slightly higher MAE values, they outperform Transformer models in capturing broader trends and variance in stock prices, as evidenced by higher R-squared (R2) values. As a result of the large number of cargo containers entering the United States, not all of them can be thoroughly inspected. Most of these containers contain properly documented and legal cargo, but some people take advantage of this situation by hiding illicit items in the cargo containers such as drugs. The Weed Seed Wizard is a computer simulation tool that:
- applies to all Australian grain growing areas
- helps growers understand and manage weed seedbanks on their farms
- uses farm management records to simulate how different crop rotations, weed control techniques, irrigation, grazing and harvest management tactics can affect weed numbers, the weed seedbank and yields
- uses farm-specific management and site-specific weather
- is multi-species
