Previous research demonstrated the ability for users to accurately recognize Spatiotemporal Vibrotactile Patterns (SVP): sequences of vibrations on different motors occurring either sequentially or simultaneously. However, the experiments were only run in a lab setting and the ability for users to recognize SVP in a real-world environment remains unclear. In this paper, we investigate how several factors may affect recognition: (1) physical activity (running), (2) cognitive task (i.e. primary task, typing), (3) distribution of the vibration motors across body parts and (4) temporality of the patterns. Wearables are increasingly used during training to quantify performance and provide valuable real-time information. However, interacting with these devices in motion may disrupt the movements of the activity. We propose a method of interaction involving tapping specific locations on the body, identify candidate locations for running and cycling, and compare them in a series of controlled experiments with athletes. A purpose-built prototype measures speed of interaction and gives feedback cues for athletes to report the physical effects on the activity itself. Our results suggest that specific locations are faster and have minimal disruption to movement, even under induced fatigue conditions. …

The model for interacting with computing devices remains primarily focused on visual design. However, sound has a unique set of advantages. In this work, an experiment was devised where participants were tasked with identifying elements in an audio-only computing environment. The interaction relied on mouse movement and button presses for navigation. Experiment trials consisted of variations in sound duration, volume, and distinctness according to both experiment progress and user behavior. In this dissertation, we explore methods for enhancing the context-awareness capabilities of modern computers, including mobile devices, tablets, wearables, and traditional computers. Advancements include proposed methods for fusing information from multiple logical sensors, localizing nearby objects using depth sensors, and building models to better understand the content of 2D images.

Several new smartphones are released every year. Many people upgrade to new phones, and their old phones are not put to any further use. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of using such retired smartphones and their on-board sensors to build a home security system. We observe that door-related events such as opening and closing have unique vibration signatures when compared to many types of environmental vibrational noise. In this research, we will analyze EEG signals to obtain neural correlate classifications of user experience by applying predictive analytics. Boredom, flow, and anxiety are three states experienced by users interacting with a computer-based system. A within-subjects experiment was used to collect EEG data for these three states and a baseline. We will apply predictive analytics including linear regression, support vector machine, and neural networks to analyze and classify the EEG data for these three states of user experience.

Generative models are a class of machine learning models capable of producing digital images with plausibly realistic properties. They are useful in such applications as visualizing designs, rendering game scenes, and improving images at higher magnifications. Unfortunately, existing generative models generate only images with a discrete predetermined resolution. This paper presents the Continuous Space Generative Model (CSGM), a novel generative model capable of generating images as a continuous function, rather than as a discrete set of pixel values. Based on an analysis of 49 popular contemporary video games, we develop a descriptive framework of visual interaction cues in video games. These cues are used to inform players what can be interacted with, where to look, and where to go within the game world. These cues vary along three dimensions: the purpose of the cue, the visual design of the cue, and the circumstances under which the cue is shown. However, when family and friends are separated by distance it can be difficult if not impossible to share such activities. We explore this design space by investigating the benefits and challenges of using a telepresence robot to support outdoor leisure activities. Selecting an item of interest on smartwatches can be tedious and time-consuming as it involves a series of swipe and tap actions. We present PageFlip, a novel method that combines into a single action multiple touch operations such as command invocation and value selection for efficient interaction on smartwatches. In this research, we investigate if and how more photos than a single headshot can heighten the level of information provided by persona profiles. We conduct eye-tracking experiments and qualitative interviews with variations in the photos: a single headshot, a headshot and images of the persona in different contexts, and a headshot with pictures of different people representing key persona attributes. The results show that more contextual photos significantly improve the information end users derive from a persona profile; however, showing images of different people creates confusion and lowers the informativeness. Remote collaborators working together on physical objects have difficulty building a shared understanding of what each person is talking about. Conventional video chat systems are insufficient for many situations because they present a single view of the object in a flattened image. To understand how this limited perspective affects collaboration, we designed the Remote Manipulator (ReMa), which can reproduce orientation manipulations on a proxy object at a remote site. Widespread use of fully autonomous vehicles is near. However, the desire for a human to maintain control, even if limited, of a vehicle will likely never fully subside. Protocols to safely and efficiently manage reservation-based intersections with a mixture of fully autonomous, semi-autonomous, and non-autonomous vehicles exist such as AIM, SemiAIM, and H-AIM. Missing from these protocols is persistent human control of semi-autonomous vehicles in approaching and navigating autonomous intersections without the use of traditional signals. In this paper, we discuss the role of the movement trajectory and velocity enabled by our tele-robotic system (ReMa) for remote collaboration on physical tasks. Our system reproduces changes in object orientation and position at a remote location using a humanoid robotic arm. However, even minor kinematics differences between robot and human arm can result in awkward or exaggerated robot movements. As a result, user communication with the robotic system can become less efficient, less fluent and more time intensive.

The VIREO Known-Item Search (KIS) system has joined the Video Browser Showdown (VBS) [1] evaluation benchmark for the first time in year 2017. With experiences learned, the second version of VIREO KIS is presented in this paper. Considering the color-sketch based retrieval, we propose a simple grid-based approach for color query.
