Design Of Revising Proximity Between Space And Time Cues On Flight Deck Displays To Support Nextgen – The First Phase, Chang-Geun Oh, Jennie J. Gallimore, Pamela S. Tsang
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate novel display formats to support RTA operations for near to midterm NextGen. Traditional cockpit displays separate space and time information in distant display sources in heterogeneous formats (graphics vs. text). This design composition may cause potential pilot errors when required time of arrival (RTA) obligations are imposed at every waypoint in NextGen. Pilots were randomly assigned to four different display conditions in a simulator – one traditional display with distant space and time cues, and three novel displays with close spatial proximity between the two cues. In the first phase …
Space Operations In The Suborbital Space Flight Simulator And Mission Control Center: Lessons Learned With Xcor Lynx, Pedro Llanos, Christopher Nguyen, David Williams, Kim O. Chambers, Erik Seedhouse, Robert Davidson
Space Operations In The Suborbital Space Flight Simulator And Mission Control Center: Lessons Learned With Xcor Lynx, Pedro Llanos, Christopher Nguyen, David Williams, Kim O. Chambers, Erik Seedhouse, Robert Davidson
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This study was conducted to better understand the performance of the XCOR Lynx vehicle. Because the Lynx development was halted, the best knowledge of vehicle dynamics can only be found through simulator flights. X-Plane 10 was chosen for its robust applications and accurate portrayal of dynamics on a vehicle in flight. The Suborbital Space Flight Simulator (SSFS) and Mission Control Center (MCC) were brought to the Applied Aviation Sciences department in fall 2015 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach campus. This academic and research tool is a department asset capable of providing multiple fields of data about suborbital simulated flights. …
Dictionary Learning With Structured Noise, Pan Zhou, Cong Fang, Zhouchen Lin, Chao Zhang, Y. Edward Chang
Dictionary Learning With Structured Noise, Pan Zhou, Cong Fang, Zhouchen Lin, Chao Zhang, Y. Edward Chang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, lots of dictionary learning methods have been proposed and successfully applied. However, many of them assume that the noise in data is drawn from Gaussian or Laplacian distribution and therefore they typically adopt the 2 or 1 norm to characterize these two kinds of noise, respectively. Since this assumption is inconsistent with the real cases, the performance of these methods is limited. In this paper, we propose a novel dictionary learning with structured noise (DLSN) method for handling noisy data. We decompose the original data into three parts: clean data, structured noise, and Gaussian noise, and then characterize them …
Unobtrusive And Extensible Archival Replay Banners Using Custom Elements, Sawood Alam, Mat Kelly, Michele C. Weigle, Michael L. Nelson
Unobtrusive And Extensible Archival Replay Banners Using Custom Elements, Sawood Alam, Mat Kelly, Michele C. Weigle, Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We compare and contrast three different ways to implement an archival replay banner. We propose an implementation that utilizes Custom Elements and adds some unique behaviors, not common in existing archival replay systems, to enhance the user experience. Our approach has a minimal user interface footprint and resource overhead while still providing rich interactivity and extended on-demand provenance information about the archived resources.
Pagesense: Toward Stylewise Contextual Advertising Via Visual Analysis Of Web Pages, Tao Mei, Lusong Li, Xinmei Tian, Dacheng Tao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Pagesense: Toward Stylewise Contextual Advertising Via Visual Analysis Of Web Pages, Tao Mei, Lusong Li, Xinmei Tian, Dacheng Tao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Internet has emerged as the most effective and a highly popular medium for advertising. Current contextual advertising platforms need publishers to manually change the original structure of their Web pages and predefine the position and style of embedded ads. Although publishers spend significant effort optimizing their Web page layout, a large number of Web pages contain noticeable blank regions. We present an innovative stylewise advertising platform for contextual advertising, called PageSense. The "style" of Web pages refers to the visual appearance of a Web page, such as color and layout. PageSense aims to associate style-consistent ads with Web pages. …

An Implementation And Usability Study Of A Natural User Interface Virtual Piano, Zackery Frazier
An Implementation And Usability Study Of A Natural User Interface Virtual Piano, Zackery Frazier
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
We present an implementation of a Natural User Interface (NUI) virtual piano keyboard. Using the Unity game engine and a Leap Motion hand controller, users are able to use their hands to interact with and play music in a virtual scene. Various approaches were attempted in refining the user experience of the virtual piano, and the successes and shortcomings of each implementation method are outlined and elaborated upon. Additionally, the most successful method, which was achieved by using Unity’s physics engine to detect rigid body collisions between virtual fingers and keys, was used to complete a usability study involving both …
The Application Of Gpu To Molecular Communication Studies, Tobias J. Cain
The Application Of Gpu To Molecular Communication Studies, Tobias J. Cain
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This thesis applies the recent trends in parallel processing, via graphics processing unit (GPU), to the field of molecular communications (MC), an investigation into communication possibilities of futuristic in vivo nanomachines. Existing MC simulations have not fully accounted for structural boundaries and the associated simulation of a massive number of messenger molecule paths for stochastic evaluation. These molecules are influenced by a Brownian motion as well as the flow of the blood, which is modeled using numerical methods based on the Fokker-Planck stochastic differential equation. By using a GPU these paths can be calculated on a massive scale, both in …
Self-Image Multimedia Technologies For Feedforward Observational Learning, Nkiruka M. A. Uzuegbunam
Self-Image Multimedia Technologies For Feedforward Observational Learning, Nkiruka M. A. Uzuegbunam
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
This dissertation investigates the development and use of self-images in augmented reality systems for learning and learning-based activities. This work focuses on self- modeling, a particular form of learning, actively employed in various settings for therapy or teaching. In particular, this work aims to develop novel multimedia systems to support the display and rendering of augmented self-images. It aims to use interactivity (via games) as a means of obtaining imagery for use in creating augmented self-images. Two multimedia systems are developed, discussed and analyzed. The proposed systems are validated in terms of their technical innovation and their clinical efficacy in …

Investigating Midair Virtual Keyboard Input Using A Head Mounted Display, Jiban Krishna Adhikary
Investigating Midair Virtual Keyboard Input Using A Head Mounted Display, Jiban Krishna Adhikary
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Until recently text entry in virtual reality has been limited to using hand-held controllers. These techniques of text entry are feasible only for entering short texts like usernames and passwords. But recent improvements in virtual reality devices have paved the way to varied interactions in virtual environment and many of these tasks include annotation, text messaging, etc. These tasks require an effective way of text entry in virtual reality. We present an interactive midair text entry system in virtual reality which allows users to use their one or both hands as the means of entering text. Our system also allows …
