File Fragment Classification Using Neural Networks With Lossless Representations, Luke Hiester May 2018

File Fragment Classification Using Neural Networks With Lossless Representations, Luke Hiester

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study explores the use of neural networks as universal models for classifying file fragments. This approach differs from previous work in its lossless feature representation, with fragments’ bits as direct input, and its use of feedforward, recurrent, and convolutional networks as classifiers, whereas previous work has only tested feedforward networks. Due to the study’s exploratory nature, the models were not directly evaluated in a practical setting; rather, easily reproducible experiments were performed to attempt to answer the initial question of whether this approach is worthwhile to pursue further, especially due to its high computational cost. The experiments tested classification …

Assessing Classical And Expressive Aesthetics Of Web Pages Using Machine Learning, Ang Chen, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Langtao Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aesthetics plays a key role in web design. However, most websites are developed based on designers’ "inspirations" or "educated guesses" (Liu, 2003). While perceptions of aesthetics are intuitive abilities of humankind, the underlying principles for assessing aesthetics are not well understood. In this research, we propose using machine learning techniques to explore and more fully understand the patterns and underlying principles of aesthetics. We propose using machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for two aesthetic dimensions – classical aesthetics and expressive aesthetics – as well as for overall aesthetics of web pages in order to evaluate the aesthetic quality …

Improving Asynchronous Advantage Actor Critic With A More Intelligent Exploration Strategy, James B. Holliday

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We propose a simple and efficient modification to the Asynchronous Advantage Actor Critic (A3C)

algorithm that improves training. In 2016 Google’s DeepMind set a new standard for state-of-theart

reinforcement learning performance with the introduction of the A3C algorithm. The goal of

this research is to show that A3C can be improved by the use of a new novel exploration strategy we

call “Follow then Forage Exploration” (FFE). FFE forces the agents to follow the best known path

at the beginning of a training episode and then later in the episode the agent is forced to “forage”

and explores randomly. In …

An Optimization Approach To Automate The Generation Of Radiotherapy Treatment Plans, Qian Li Apr 2018

An Optimization Approach To Automate The Generation Of Radiotherapy Treatment Plans, Qian Li

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

The main goal of radiotherapy is to deliver a specified dose of radiation directly to the tumor while minimizing radiation damage to healthy tissues. Currently, the treatment plan is being developed by professional planners using a commercial treatment planning system. In this treatment planning system, the planner modifies the objectives and weights of the objectives until an ideal combination of doses is achieved. This arbitrary process can cost a few hours or a day to finish. My research aims to automate the generation of the plans by implementing an optimization algorithm on top of the treatment planning system using gradient …

Efficient Reduced Bias Genetic Algorithm For Generic Community Detection Objectives, Aditya Karnam Gururaj Rao Apr 2018

Efficient Reduced Bias Genetic Algorithm For Generic Community Detection Objectives, Aditya Karnam Gururaj Rao

Theses

The problem of community structure identification has been an extensively investigated area for biology, physics, social sciences, and computer science in recent years for studying the properties of networks representing complex relationships. Most traditional methods, such as K-means and hierarchical clustering, are based on the assumption that communities have spherical configurations. Lately, Genetic Algorithms (GA) are being utilized for efficient community detection without imposing sphericity. GAs are machine learning methods which mimic natural selection and scale with the complexity of the network. However, traditional GA approaches employ a representation method that dramatically increases the solution space to be searched by …

The Algorithmic Composition Of Classical Music Through Data Mining, Tom Donald Richmond, Imad Rahal Apr 2018

The Algorithmic Composition Of Classical Music Through Data Mining, Tom Donald Richmond, Imad Rahal

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

The desire to teach a computer how to algorithmically compose music has been a topic in the world of computer science since the 1950’s, with roots of computer-less algorithmic composition dating back to Mozart himself. One limitation of algorithmically composing music has been the difficulty of eliminating the human intervention required to achieve a musically homogeneous composition. We attempt to remedy this issue by teaching a computer how the rules of composition differ between the six distinct eras of classical music by having it examine a dataset of musical scores, rather than explicitly telling the computer the formal rules of …

Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni Apr 2018

Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

Optimal control is a control method which provides inputs that minimize a performance index subject to state or input constraints [58]. The existing solutions for finding the exact optimal control solution such as Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming suffer from curse of dimensionality in high order dynamical systems. One remedy for this problem is finding near optimal solution instead of the exact optimal solution to avoid curse of dimensionality [31]. A method for finding the approximate optimal solution is through Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) methods which are discussed in the subsequent chapters.

In this dissertation, optimal switching in switched …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the capability to harvest energy from low frequency motions or vibrations, piezoelectric energy harvesting has become a promising solution to achieve battery-less wearable system. Recently, many works have convincingly demonstrated that PEH can also act as a self-powered sensor for detecting a wide range of machine and human contexts, which suggests that energy harvesting and sensing can be performed concurrently. However, realization of simultaneous energy harvesting and sensing (SEHS) is challenging as the energy harvesting process distorts the sensing signal. In this demo, we propose a novel SEHS architecture prototyped in the form factor of an insole, which combines …

Behavior Flexibility For Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems, Taylor B. Bodin Mar 2018

Behavior Flexibility For Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems, Taylor B. Bodin

Theses and Dissertations

Autonomous unmanned aerial systems (UAS) could supplement and eventually subsume a substantial portion of the mission set currently executed by remote pilots, making UAS more robust, responsive, and numerous than permitted by teleoperation alone. Unfortunately, the development of robust autonomous systems is difficult, costly, and time-consuming. Furthermore, the resulting systems often make little reuse of proven software components and offer limited adaptability for new tasks. This work presents a development platform for UAS which promotes behavioral flexibility. The platform incorporates the Unified Behavior Framework (a modular, extensible autonomy framework), the Robotic Operating System (a RSF), and PX4 (an open- source …

Birds that experience variation in climatic conditions must maintain a stable nest temperature during incubation for successful hatching of offspring. Varying nest structure and incubation behaviour may be the methods birds use to regulate nest temperature. We used a modeling approach to investigate how birds adjust incubation behaviour to ambient temperature.

Hidden Markov Models (HMM) have been used previously to predict the spatial distribution of animals based on the models’ ability to classify movement behaviour. We used a HMM to predict zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) incubation behaviour and nest structure from a nest temperature data set. The full …
