Learning Transferable Deep Convolutional Neural Networks For The Classification Of Bacterial Virulence Factors, Dandan Zheng, Guansong Pang, Bo Liu, Lihong Chen, Jian Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Motivation: Identification of virulence factors (VFs) is critical to the elucidation of bacterial pathogenesis and prevention of related infectious diseases. Current computational methods for VF prediction focus on binary classification or involve only several class(es) of VFs with sufficient samples. However, thousands of VF classes are present in real-world scenarios, and many of them only have a very limited number of samples available. Results: We first construct a large VF dataset, covering 3446 VF classes with 160 495 sequences, and then propose deep convolutional neural network models for VF classification. We show that (i) for common VF classes with sufficient samples, …
Short-Term Repositioning For Empty Vehicles On Ride-Sourcing Platforms, Hai Wang, Zhengli Wang
Short-Term Repositioning For Empty Vehicles On Ride-Sourcing Platforms, Hai Wang, Zhengli Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Motivation Ride sourcing companies, such as Uber, Lyft, and Didi, have been able to leverage on internet-based platforms to connect passengers and drivers. These platforms facilitate passengers and drivers’ mobility data on smartphones in real time, which enables a convenient matching between demand and supply. The imbalance of demand (i.e., passenger requests) and supply (i.e., drivers) on the platforms causes many unserved passenger requests and empty vehicles with idle drivers to exist at the same time, which poses a challenging problem for the platform. To address these challenges, some platforms display heat maps of surge-pricing multipliers or real-time demand to …
Hierarchical Multiagent Reinforcement Learning For Maritime Traffic Management, Arambam James Singh, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau
Hierarchical Multiagent Reinforcement Learning For Maritime Traffic Management, Arambam James Singh, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Increasing global maritime traffic coupled with rapid digitization and automation in shipping mandate developing next generation maritime traffic management systems to mitigate congestion, increase safety of navigation, and avoid collisions in busy and geographically constrained ports (such as Singapore's). To achieve these objectives, we model the maritime traffic as a large multiagent system with individual vessels as agents, and VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) authority as a regulatory agent. We develop a hierarchical reinforcement learning approach where vessels first select a high level action based on the underlying traffic flow, and then select the low level action that determines their future …

Existing works in deep Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) mainly focus on coordinating cooperative agents to complete certain tasks jointly. However, in many cases of the real world, agents are self-interested such as employees in a company and clubs in a league. Therefore, the leader, i.e., the manager of the company or the league, needs to provide bonuses to followers for efficient coordination, which we call expensive coordination. The main difficulties of expensive coordination are that i) the leader has to consider the long-term effect and predict the followers’ behaviors when assigning bonuses, and ii) the complex interactions between followers make …
Non-Autoregressive Dialog State Tracking, Hung Le, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi
Non-Autoregressive Dialog State Tracking, Hung Le, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent efforts in Dialogue State Tracking (DST) for task-oriented dialogues have progressed toward open-vocabulary or generation-based approaches where the models can generate slot value candidates from the dialogue history itself. These approaches have shown good performance gain, especially in complicated dialogue domains with dynamic slot values. However, they fall short in two aspects: (1) they do not allow models to explicitly learn signals across domains and slots to detect potential dependencies among (domain, slot) pairs; and (2) existing models follow auto-regressive approaches which incur high time cost when the dialogue evolves over multiple domains and multiple turns. In this paper, …

Enhancing Cellular Communications For Uavs Via Intelligent Reflective Surface, Dong Ma, Ming Ding, Mahbub Hassan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) capable of reconfiguring their electromagnetic absorption and reflection properties in real-time are offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance wireless communication experience in challenging environments. In this paper, we analyze the potential of IRS in enhancing cellular communications for UAVs, which currently suffers from poor signal strength due to the down-tilt of base station antennas optimized to serve ground users. We consider deployment of IRS on building walls, which can be remotely configured by cellular base stations to coherently direct the reflected radio waves towards specific UAVs in order to increase their received signal strengths. Using the recently …

Learning Discriminative Neural Sentiment Units For Semi-Supervised Target-Level Sentiment Classification, Jingjing Zhao, Yao Yang, Guansong Pang, Lei Lv, Hong Shang, Zhongqian Sun, Wei Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Target-level sentiment classification aims at assigning sentiment polarities to opinion targets in a sentence, for which it is significantly more challenging to obtain large-scale labeled data than sentence/document-level sentiment classification due to the intricate contexts and relations of the target words. To address this challenge, we propose a novel semi-supervised approach to learn sentiment-aware representations from easily accessible unlabeled data specifically for the finegrained sentiment learning. This is very different from current popular semi-supervised solutions that use the unlabeled data via pretraining to generate generic representations for various types of downstream tasks. Particularly, we show for the first time that …

A Matheuristic Algorithm For Solving The Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking, Aldy Gunawan, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Pieter Vansteenwegen, Vincent F. Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper studies the integration of the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking, namely VRPCD. The aim is to find a set of routes to deliver single products from a set of suppliers to a set of customers through a cross-dock facility, such that the operational and transportation costs are minimized, without violating the vehicle capacity and time horizon constraints. A two-phase matheuristic approach that uses the routes of the local optima of an adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) as columns in a set-partitioning formulation of the VRPCD is designed. This matheuristic outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in solving a subset of …

Interests in the automatic generation of cooking recipes have been growing steadily over the past few years thanks to a large amount of online cooking recipes. We present RecipeGPT, a novel online recipe generation and evaluation system. The system provides two modes of text generations: (1) instruction generation from given recipe title and ingredients; and (2) ingredient generation from recipe title and cooking instructions. Its back-end text generation module comprises a generative pre-trained language model GPT-2 fine-tuned on a large cooking recipe dataset. Moreover, the recipe evaluation module allows the users to conveniently inspect the quality of the generated recipe …

A Cue Adaptive Decoder For Controllable Neural Response Generation, Weichao Wang, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Yifei Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In open-domain dialogue systems, dialogue cues such as emotion, persona, and emoji can be incorporated into conversation models for strengthening the semantic relevance of generated responses. Existing neural response generation models either incorporate dialogue cue into decoder’s initial state or embed the cue indiscriminately into the state of every generated word, which may cause the gradients of the embedded cue to vanish or disturb the semantic relevance of generated words during back propagation. In this paper, we propose a Cue Adaptive Decoder (CueAD) that aims to dynamically determine the involvement of a cue at each generation step in the decoding. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cyber-security is an important societal concern. Cyber-attacks have increased in numbers as well as in the extent of damage caused in every attack. Large organizations operate a Cyber Security Operation Center (CSOC), which forms the first line of cyber-defense. The inspection of cyber-alerts is a critical part of CSOC operations (defender or blue team). Recent work proposed a reinforcement learning (RL) based approach for the defender’s decision-making to prevent the cyber-alert queue length from growing large and overwhelming the defender. In this article, we perform a red team (adversarial) evaluation of this approach. With the recent attacks on learning-based decision-making …

Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Ethics: Ethics Of Ai And Ethical Ai, Keng Siau, Weiyu Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology has achieved many great things, such as facial recognition, medical diagnosis, and self-driving cars. AI promises enormous benefits for economic growth, social development, as well as human well-being and safety improvement. However, the low-level of explainability, data biases, data security, data privacy, and ethical problems of AI-based technology pose significant risks for users, developers, humanity, and societies. As AI advances, one critical issue is how to address the ethical and moral challenges associated with AI. Even though the concept of “machine ethics” was proposed around 2006, AI ethics is still in the infancy stage. AI ethics …

Multi-Level Head-Wise Match And Aggregation In Transformer For Textual Sequence Matching, Shuohang Wang, Yunshi Lan, Yi Tay, Jing Jiang, Jingjing Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Transformer has been successfully applied to many natural language processing tasks. However, for textual sequence matching, simple matching between the representation of a pair of sequences might bring in unnecessary noise. In this paper, we propose a new approach to sequence pair matching with Transformer, by learning head-wise matching representations on multiple levels. Experiments show that our proposed approach can achieve new state-of-the-art performance on multiple tasks that rely only on pre-computed sequence-vectorrepresentation, such as SNLI, MNLI-match, MNLI-mismatch, QQP, and SQuAD-binary

Gdface: Gated Deformation For Multi-View Face Image Synthesis, Xuemiao Xu, Keke Li, Cheng Xu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Photorealistic multi-view face synthesis from a single image is an important but challenging problem. Existing methods mainly learn a texture mapping model from the source face to the target face. However, they fail to consider the internal deformation caused by the change of poses, leading to the unsatisfactory synthesized results for large pose variations. In this paper, we propose a Gated Deformable Face Synthesis Network to model the deformation of faces that aids the synthesis of the target face image. Specifically, we propose a dual network that consists of two modules. The first module estimates the deformation of two views …

Recognizing ingredients for a given dish image is at the core of automatic dietary assessment, attracting increasing attention from both industry and academia. Nevertheless, the task is challenging due to the difficulty of collecting and labeling sufficient training data. On one hand, there are hundred thousands of food ingredients in the world, ranging from the common to rare. Collecting training samples for all of the ingredient categories is difficult. On the other hand, as the ingredient appearances exhibit huge visual variance during the food preparation, it requires to collect the training samples under different cooking and cutting methods for robust …

The proliferation of connected embedded devices, or the Internet of Things (IoT), together with recent advances in machine intelligence, will change the profile of future cloud services and introduce a variety of new research problems, both in cloud applications and infrastructure layers. These problems are centered around empowering individually resource-limited devices to exhibit intelligent behavior, both in sensing and control, thanks to a judicious utilization of cloud resources. Cloud services will enable learning from data, performing inference, and executing control, all with assurances on outcomes. The paper discusses such emerging services and outlines five resulting new research directions towards enabling …
Bounding Regret In Empirical Games, Steven Jecmen, Arunesh Sinha, Zun Li, Long Tran-Thanh
Bounding Regret In Empirical Games, Steven Jecmen, Arunesh Sinha, Zun Li, Long Tran-Thanh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Empirical game-theoretic analysis refers to a set of models and techniques for solving large-scale games. However, there is a lack of a quantitative guarantee about the quality of output approximate Nash equilibria (NE). A natural quantitative guarantee for such an approximate NE is the regret in the game (i.e. the best deviation gain). We formulate this deviation gain computation as a multi-armed bandit problem, with a new optimization goal unlike those studied in prior work. We propose an efficient algorithm Super-Arm UCB (SAUCB) for the problem and a number of variants. We present sample complexity results as well as extensive …

We propose an approach to generate realistic and high-fidelity stock market data based on generative adversarial networks. We model the order stream as a stochastic process with finite history dependence, and employ a conditional Wasserstein GAN to capture history dependence of orders in a stock market. We test our approach with actual market and synthetic data on a number of different statistics, and find the generated data to be close to real data.

Solving Online Threat Screening Games Using Constrained Action Space Reinforcement Learning, Sanket Shah, Arunesh Sinha, Pradeep Varakantham, Andrew Perrault, Millind Tambe
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large-scale screening for potential threats with limited resources and capacity for screening is a problem of interest at airports, seaports, and other ports of entry. Adversaries can observe screening procedures and arrive at a time when there will be gaps in screening due to limited resource capacities. To capture this game between ports and adversaries, this problem has been previously represented as a Stackelberg game, referred to as a Threat Screening Game (TSG). Given the significant complexity associated with solving TSGs and uncertainty in arrivals of customers, existing work has assumed that screenees arrive and are allocated security resources at …
Stochastically Robust Personalized Ranking For Lsh Recommendation Retrieval, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Stochastically Robust Personalized Ranking For Lsh Recommendation Retrieval, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) has become one of the most commonly used approximate nearest neighbor search techniques to avoid the prohibitive cost of scanning through all data points. For recommender systems, LSH achieves efficient recommendation retrieval by encoding user and item vectors into binary hash codes, reducing the cost of exhaustively examining all the item vectors to identify the topk items. However, conventional matrix factorization models may suffer from performance degeneration caused by randomly-drawn LSH hash functions, directly affecting the ultimate quality of the recommendations. In this paper, we propose a framework named SRPR, which factors in the stochasticity of …
Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Adjacent-Encoder, Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw
Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Adjacent-Encoder, Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Oftentimes documents are linked to one another in a network structure,e.g., academic papers cite other papers, Web pages link to other pages. In this paper we propose a holistic topic model to learn meaningful and unified low-dimensional representations for networked documents that seek to preserve both textual content and network structure. On the basis of reconstructing not only the input document but also its adjacent neighbors, we develop two neural encoder architectures. Adjacent-Encoder, or AdjEnc, induces competition among documents for topic propagation, and reconstruction among neighbors for semantic capture. Adjacent-Encoder-X, or AdjEnc-X, extends this to also encode the network structure …

Deepdualmapper: A Gated Fusion Network For Automatic Map Extraction Using Aerial Images And Trajectories, Hao Wu, Hanyuan Zhang, Xinyu Zhang, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng, Yuning Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automatic map extraction is of great importance to urban computing and location-based services. Aerial image and GPS trajectory data refer to two different data sources that could be leveraged to generate the map, although they carry different types of information. Most previous works on data fusion between aerial images and data from auxiliary sensors do not fully utilize the information of both modalities and hence suffer from the issue of information loss. We propose a deep convolutional neural network called DeepDualMapper which fuses the aerial image and trajectory data in a more seamless manner to extract the digital map. We …

Multi-Level Fine-Scaled Sentiment Sensing With Ambivalence Handling, Zhaoxia Wang, Seng-Beng Ho, Erik Cambria
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social media represent a rich source of information, such as critiques, feedback, and other opinions posted online by Internet users. Such information is typically a good reflection of users’ sentiments and attitudes towards various services, topics, or products. Sentiment analysis has become an increasingly important natural language processing (NLP) task to help users make sense of what is happening in the Internet blogosphere and it can be useful for companies as well as public organizations. However, most existing sentiment analysis techniques are only able to analyze data at the aggregate level, merely providing a binary classification (positive vs. negative), and …

The Future Of Work Now: Medical Coding With Ai, Thomas H. Davenport, Steven M. Miller
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The coding of medical diagnosis and treatment has always been a challenging issue. Translating a patient’s complex symptoms, and a clinician’s efforts to address them, into a clear and unambiguous classification code was difficult even in simpler times. Now, however, hospitals and health insurance companies want very detailed information on what was wrong with a patient and the steps taken to treat them— for clinical record-keeping, for hospital operations review and planning, and perhaps most importantly, for financial reimbursement purposes.

Teacher-Student Networks With Multiple Decoders For Solving Math Word Problem, Jipeng Zhang, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim, Wei Qin, Lei Wang, Jie Shao, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Math word problem (MWP) is challenging due to the limitation in training data where only one “standard” solution is available. MWP models often simply fit this solution rather than truly understand or solve the problem. The generalization of models (to diverse word scenarios) is thus limited. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach, TSN-MD, by leveraging the teacher network to integrate the knowledge of equivalent solution expressions and then to regularize the learning behavior of the student network. In addition, we introduce the multiple-decoder student network to generate multiple candidate solution expressions by which the final answer …

Harmony Search Algorithm For Time-Dependent Vehicle Routing Problem With Time Windows, Yun-Chia Liang, Vanny Minanda, Aldy Gunawan, Angela Hsiang-Ling Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is a combinatorial problem where a certain set of nodes must be visited within a certain amount of time as well as the vehicle’s capacity. There are numerous variants of VRP such as VRP with time windows, where each node has opening and closing time, therefore, the visiting time must be during that interval. Another variant takes time-dependent constraint into account. This variant fits real-world scenarios, where at different period of time, the speed on the road varies depending on the traffic congestion. In this study, three objectives – total traveling time, total traveling distance, and …

Few-shot classification (FSC) is challenging due to the scarcity of labeled training data (e.g. only one labeled data point per class). Meta-learning has shown to achieve promising results by learning to initialize a classification model for FSC. In this paper we propose a novel semi-supervised meta-learning method called learning to self-train (LST) that leverages unlabeled data and specifically meta-learns how to cherry-pick and label such unsupervised data to further improve performance. To this end, we train the LST model through a large number of semi-supervised few-shot tasks. On each task, we train a few-shot model to predict pseudo labels for …

A Mathematical Programming Model For The Green Mixed Fleet Vehicle Routing Problem With Realistic Energy Consumption And Partial Recharges, Vincent F. Yu, Panca Jodiwan, Aldy Gunawan, Audrey Tedja Widjaja
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A green mixed fleet vehicle routing with realistic energy consumption and partial recharges problem (GMFVRP-REC-PR) is addressed in this paper. This problem involves a fixed number of electric vehicles and internal combustion vehicles to serve a set of customers. The realistic energy consumption which depends on several variables is utilized to calculate the electricity consumption of an electric vehicle and fuel consumption of an internal combustion vehicle. Partial recharging policy is included into the problem to represent the real life scenario. The objective of this problem is to minimize the total travelled distance and the total emission produced by internal …
