Human doctors with well-structured medical knowledge can diagnose a disease merely via a few conversations with patients about symptoms. In contrast, existing knowledgegrounded dialogue systems often require a large number of dialogue instances to learn as they fail to capture the correlations between different diseases and neglect the diagnostic experience shared among them. To address this issue, we propose a more natural and practical paradigm, i.e., low-resource medical dialogue generation, which can transfer the diagnostic experience from source diseases to target ones with a handful of data for adaptation. It is capitalized on a commonsense knowledge graph to characterize the …
Scalable Verification Of Quantized Neural Networks, Thomas A. Henzinger, Mathias Lechner, Dorde Zikelic
Scalable Verification Of Quantized Neural Networks, Thomas A. Henzinger, Mathias Lechner, Dorde Zikelic
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Formal verification of neural networks is an active topic of research, and recent advances have significantly increased the size of the networks that verification tools can handle. However, most methods are designed for verification of an idealized model of the actual network which works over real arithmetic and ignores rounding imprecisions. This idealization is in stark contrast to network quantization, which is a technique that trades numerical precision for computational efficiency and is, therefore, often applied in practice. Neglecting rounding errors of such low-bit quantized neural networks has been shown to lead to wrong conclusions about the network’s correctness. Thus, …

Relative And Absolute Location Embedding For Few-Shot Node Classification On Graph, Zemin Liu, Yuan Fang, Chenghao Liu, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Node classification is an important problem on graphs. While recent advances in graph neural networks achieve promising performance, they require abundant labeled nodes for training. However, in many practical scenarios there often exist novel classes in which only one or a few labeled nodes are available as supervision, known as few-shot node classification. Although meta-learning has been widely used in vision and language domains to address few-shot learning, its adoption on graphs has been limited. In particular, graph nodes in a few-shot task are not independent and relate to each other. To deal with this, we propose a novel model …

Terrace-Based Food Counting And Segmentation, Huu-Thanh Nguyen, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper represents object instance as a terrace, where the height of terrace corresponds to object attention while the evolution of layers from peak to sea level represents the complexity in drawing the finer boundary of an object. A multitask neural network is presented to learn the terrace representation. The attention of terrace is leveraged for instance counting, and the layers provide prior for easy-to-hard pathway of progressive instance segmentation. We study the model for counting and segmentation for a variety of food instances, ranging from Chinese, Japanese to Western food. This paper presents how the terrace model deals with …

Android has been the most popular smartphone system with multiple platform versions active in the market. To manage the application’s compatibility with one or more platform versions, Android allows apps to declare the supported platform SDK versions in their manifest files. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study of this modern software mechanism. Our objective is to measure the current practice of declared SDK versions (which we term as DSDK versions afterwards) in real apps, and the (in)consistency between DSDK versions and their host apps’ API calls. To successfully analyze a modern dataset of 22,687 popular apps (with an …

Real-time ridesharing systems such as UberPool, Lyft Line and GrabShare have become hugely popular as they reduce the costs for customers, improve per trip revenue for drivers and reduce traffic on the roads by grouping customers with similar itineraries. The key challenge in these systems is to group the “right” requests to travel together in the “right” available vehicles in real-time, so that the objective (e.g., requests served, revenue or delay) is optimized. This challenge has been addressed in existing work by: (i) generating as many relevant feasible combinations of requests (with respect to the available delay for customers) as …

Many AI researchers are publishing code, data and other resources that accompany their papers in GitHub repositories. In this paper, we refer to these repositories as academic AI repositories. Our preliminary study shows that highly cited papers are more likely to have popular academic AI repositories (and vice versa). Hence, in this study, we perform an empirical study on academic AI repositories to highlight good software engineering practices of popular academic AI repositories for AI researchers. We collect 1,149 academic AI repositories, in which we label the top 20% repositories that have the most number of stars as popular, and …

There have been emerging a number of benchmarks and techniques for the detection of deepfakes. However, very few works study the detection of incrementally appearing deepfakes in the real-world scenarios. To simulate the wild scenes, this paper suggests a continual deepfake detection benchmark (CDDB) over a new collection of deepfakes from both known and unknown generative models. The suggested CDDB designs multiple evaluations on the detection over easy, hard, and long sequence of deepfake tasks, with a set of appropriate measures. In addition, we exploit multiple approaches to adapt multiclass incremental learning methods, commonly used in the continual visual recognition, …
3d Dental Biometrics: Automatic Pose-Invariant Dental Arch Extraction And Matching, Xin Zhong, Zhiyuan Zhang
3d Dental Biometrics: Automatic Pose-Invariant Dental Arch Extraction And Matching, Xin Zhong, Zhiyuan Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A novel automatic pose-invariant dental arch extraction and matching framework is developed for 3D dental identification using laser-scanned dental plasters. In our previous attempt [1-5], 3D point-based algorithms have been developed and they have shown a few advantages over existing 2D dental identifications. This study is a continuous effort in developing arch-based algorithms to extract and match dental arch feature in an automatic and pose-invariant way. As best as we know, this is the first attempt at automatic dental arch extraction and matching for 3D dental identification. A Radial Ray Algorithm (RRA) is proposed by projecting dental arch shape from …
Partial Adversarial Behavior Deception In Security Games, Thanh H. Nguyen, Arunesh Sinha, He He
Partial Adversarial Behavior Deception In Security Games, Thanh H. Nguyen, Arunesh Sinha, He He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning attacker behavior is an important research topic in security games as security agencies are often uncertain about attackers’ decision making. Previous work has focused on developing various behavioral models of attackers based on historical attack data. However, a clever attacker can manipulate its attacks to fail such attack-driven learning, leading to ineffective defense strategies. We study attacker behavior deception with three main contributions. First, we propose a new model, named partial behavior deception model, in which there is a deceptive attacker (among multiple attackers) who controls a portion of attacks. Our model captures real-world security scenarios such as wildlife …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In recent years, generative adversarial networks (GANs) and its variants have achieved unprecedented success in image synthesis. They are widely adopted in synthesizing facial images which brings potential security concerns to humans as the fakes spread and fuel the misinformation. However, robust detectors of these AI-synthesized fake faces are still in their infancy and are not ready to fully tackle this emerging challenge. In this work, we propose a novel approach, named FakeSpotter, based on monitoring neuron behaviors to spot AIsynthesized fake faces. The studies on neuron coverage and interactions have successfully shown that they can be served as testing …

Most of today’s AI technologies are geared towards mastering specific tasks performance through learning from a huge volume of data. However, less attention has still been given to make the AI understand its own purposes or be responsible socially. In this paper, a new model of agent is presented with the capacity to represent itself as a distinct individual with identity, a mind of its own, unique experiences, and social lives. In this way, the agent can interact with its surroundings and other agents seamlessly and meaningfully. A practical framework for developing an agent architecture with this model of self …
The Value Of Humanization In Customer Service, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui, Shujing Sun
The Value Of Humanization In Customer Service, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui, Shujing Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As algorithm-based agents become increasingly capable of handling customer service queries, customers are often uncertain whether they are served by humans or algorithms, and managers are left to question the value of human agents once the technology matures. The current paper studies this question by quantifying the impact of customers' enhanced perception of being served by human agents on customer service interactions. Our identification strategy hinges on the abrupt implementation by Southwest Airlines of a signature policy, which requires the inclusion of an agent's first name in responses on Twitter, thereby making the agent more humanized in the eyes of …
Nearest Centroid: A Bridge Between Statistics And Machine Learning, Manoj Thulasidas
Nearest Centroid: A Bridge Between Statistics And Machine Learning, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In order to guide our students of machine learning in their statistical thinking, we need conceptually simple and mathematically defensible algorithms. In this paper, we present the Nearest Centroid algorithm (NC) algorithm as a pedagogical tool, combining the key concepts behind two foundational algorithms: K-Means clustering and K Nearest Neighbors (k- NN). In NC, we use the centroid (as defined in the K-Means algorithm) of the observations belonging to each class in our training data set and its distance from a new observation (similar to k-NN) for class prediction. Using this obvious extension, we will illustrate how the concepts of …

Interventional Few-Shot Learning, Zhongqi Yue, Zhang Hanwang, Qianru Sun, Xian-Sheng Hua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We uncover an ever-overlooked deficiency in the prevailing Few-Shot Learning (FSL) methods: the pre-trained knowledge is indeed a confounder that limits the performance. This finding is rooted from our causal assumption: a Structural Causal Model (SCM) for the causalities among the pre-trained knowledge, sample features, and labels. Thanks to it, we propose a novel FSL paradigm: Interventional Few-Shot Learning (IFSL). Specifically, we develop three effective IFSL algorithmic implementations based on the backdoor adjustment, which is essentially a causal intervention towards the SCM of many-shot learning: the upper-bound of FSL in a causal view. It is worth noting that the contribution …

Causal Intervention For Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation, Zhang Dong, Hanwang Zhang, Jinhui Tang, Xian-Sheng Hua, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a causal inference framework to improve Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS). Specifically, we aim to generate better pixel-level pseudo-masks by using only image-level labels --- the most crucial step in WSSS. We attribute the cause of the ambiguous boundaries of pseudo-masks to the confounding context, e.g., the correct image-level classification of "horse'' and "person'' may be not only due to the recognition of each instance, but also their co-occurrence context, making the model inspection (e.g., CAM) hard to distinguish between the boundaries. Inspired by this, we propose a structural causal model to analyze the causalities among images, contexts, and …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the maturing of artificial intelligence (AI) and multiagent systems research, we have a tremendous opportunity to direct these advances toward addressing complex societal problems. In pursuit of this goal of AI for social impact, we as AI researchers must go beyond improvements in computational methodology; it is important to step out in the field to demonstrate social impact. To this end, we focus on the problems of public safety and security, wildlife conservation, and public health in low-resource communities, and present research advances in multiagent systems to address one key cross-cutting challenge: how to effectively deploy our limited intervention …

Deep Multi-Task Learning For Depression Detection And Prediction In Longitudinal Data, Guansong Pang, Ngoc Thien Anh Pham, Emma Baker, Rebecca Bentley, Anton Van Den Hengel
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Depression is among the most prevalent mental disorders, affecting millions of people of all ages globally. Machine learning techniques have shown effective in enabling automated detection and prediction of depression for early intervention and treatment. However, they are challenged by the relative scarcity of instances of depression in the data. In this work we introduce a novel deep multi-task recurrent neural network to tackle this challenge, in which depression classification is jointly optimized with two auxiliary tasks, namely one-class metric learning and anomaly ranking. The auxiliary tasks introduce an inductive bias that improves the classification model's generalizability on small depression …
Heterogeneous Univariate Outlier Ensembles In Multidimensional Data, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao
Heterogeneous Univariate Outlier Ensembles In Multidimensional Data, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In outlier detection, recent major research has shifted from developing univariate methods to multivariate methods due to the rapid growth of multidimensional data. However, one typical issue of this paradigm shift is that many multidimensional data often mainly contains univariate outliers, in which many features are actually irrelevant. In such cases, multivariate methods are ineffective in identifying such outliers due to the potential biases and the curse of dimensionality brought by irrelevant features. Those univariate outliers might be well detected by applying univariate outlier detectors in individually relevant features. However, it is very challenging to choose a right univariate detector …

A Study Of Multi-Task And Region-Wise Deep Learning For Food Ingredient Recognition, Jingjing Chen, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua, Yu-Gang Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Food recognition has captured numerous research attention for its importance for health-related applications. The existing approaches mostly focus on the categorization of food according to dish names, while ignoring the underlying ingredient composition. In reality, two dishes with the same name do not necessarily share the exact list of ingredients. Therefore, the dishes under the same food category are not mandatorily equal in nutrition content. Nevertheless, due to limited datasets available with ingredient labels, the problem of ingredient recognition is often overlooked. Furthermore, as the number of ingredients is expected to be much less than the number of food categories, …

For improving manufacturing efficiency and minimizing costs, design for additive manufacturing (AM) has been accordingly proposed. The existing design for AM methods are mainly surrogate model based. Due to the increasingly available data nowadays, machine learning (ML) has been applied to medical diagnosis, image processing, prediction, classification, learning association, etc. A variety of studies have also been carried out to use machine learning for optimizing the process parameters of AM with corresponding objectives. In this paper, a ML integrated design for AM framework is proposed, which takes advantage of ML that can learn the complex relationships between the design and …

Global Context Aware Convolutions For 3d Point Cloud Understanding, Zhiyuan Zhang, Binh-Son Hua, Wei Chen, Yibin Tian, Sai-Kit Yeung
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent advances in deep learning for 3D point clouds have shown great promises in scene understanding tasks thanks to the introduction of convolution operators to consume 3D point clouds directly in a neural network. Point cloud data, however, could have arbitrary rotations, especially those acquired from 3D scanning. Recent works show that it is possible to design point cloud convolutions with rotation invariance property, but such methods generally do not perform as well as translation-invariant only convolution. We found that a key reason is that compared to point coordinates, rotation-invariant features consumed by point cloud convolution are not as distinctive. …

Bist: Bi-Directional Spatio-Temporal Reasoning For Video-Grounded Dialogues, Hung Le, Doyen Sahoo, Nancy F. Chen, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Video-grounded dialogues are very challenging due to (i) the complexity of videos which contain both spatial and temporal variations, and (ii) the complexity of user utterances which query different segments and/or different objects in videos over multiple dialogue turns. However, existing approaches to video-grounded dialogues often focus on superficial temporal-level visual cues, but neglect more fine-grained spatial signals from videos. To address this drawback, we propose Bi-directional Spatio-Temporal Learning (BiST), a vision-language neural framework for high-resolution queries in videos based on textual cues. Specifically, our approach not only exploits both spatial and temporal-level information, but also learns dynamic information diffusion …

Uniconv: A Unified Conversational Neural Architecture For Multi-Domain Task-Oriented Dialogues, Hung Le, Doyen Sahoo, Chenghao Liu, Nancy F. Chen, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Building an end-to-end conversational agent for multi-domain task-oriented dialogues has been an open challenge for two main reasons. First, tracking dialogue states of multiple domains is non-trivial as the dialogue agent must obtain complete states from all relevant domains, some of which might have shared slots among domains as well as unique slots specifically for one domain only. Second, the dialogue agent must also process various types of information across domains, including dialogue context, dialogue states, and database, to generate natural responses to users. Unlike the existing approaches that are often designed to train each module separately, we propose “UniConv" …

Reinforcement Learning For Zone Based Multiagent Pathfinding Under Uncertainty, Jiajing Ling, Tarun Gupta, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the problem of multiple agents finding their paths from respective sources to destination nodes in a graph (also called MAPF). Most existing approaches assume that all agents move at fixed speed, and that a single node accommodates only a single agent. Motivated by the emerging applications of autonomous vehicles such as drone traffic management, we present zone-based path finding (or ZBPF) where agents move among zones, and agents' movements require uncertain travel time. Furthermore, each zone can accommodate multiple agents (as per its capacity). We also develop a simulator for ZBPF which provides a clean interface from the …

Online Traffic Signal Control Through Sample-Based Constrained Optimization, Srishti Dhamija, Alolika Gon, Pradeep Varakantham, William Yeoh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traffic congestion reduces productivity of individuals by increasing time spent in traffic and also increases pollution. To reduce traffic congestion by better handling dynamic traffic patterns, recent work has focused on online traffic signal control. Typically, the objective in traffic signal control is to minimize expected delay over all vehicles given the uncertainty associated with the vehicle turn movements at intersections. In order to ensure responsiveness in decision making, a typical approach is to compute a schedule that minimizes the delay for the expected scenario of vehicle movements instead of minimizing expected delay over the feasible vehicle movement scenarios. Such …

SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) seeks to provide a moving agent with real-time self-localization. To achieve real-time speed, SLAM incrementally propagates position estimates. This makes SLAM fast but also makes it vulnerable to local pose estimation failures. As local pose estimation is ill-conditioned, local pose estimation failures happen regularly, making the overall SLAM system brittle. This paper attempts to correct this problem. We note that while local pose estimation is ill-conditioned, pose estimation over longer sequences is well-conditioned. Thus, local pose estimation errors eventually manifest themselves as mapping inconsistencies. When this occurs, we save the current map and activate two …

Clinical decision support systems have the potential to improve work flows of experts in practice (e.g. therapist's evidence-based rehabilitation assessment). However, the adoption of these systems is challenging, and the gains of these systems have not fully demonstrated yet. In this paper, we identified the needs of therapists to assess patient's functional abilities (e.g. alternative perspectives with quantitative information on patient's exercise motions). As a result, we co-designed and developed an intelligent decision support system that automatically identifies salient features of assessment using reinforcement learning to assess the quality of motion and generate patient-specific analysis. We evaluated this system with …

Fashion trend forecasting is a crucial task for both academia and industry. Although some efforts have been devoted to tackling this challenging task, they only studied limited fashion elements with highly seasonal or simple patterns, which could hardly reveal the real fashion trends. Towards insightful fashion trend forecasting, this work focuses on investigating fine-grained fashion element trends for specific user groups. We first contribute a large-scale fashion trend dataset (FIT) collected from Instagram with extracted time series fashion element records and user information. Furthermore, to effectively model the time series data of fashion elements with rather complex patterns, we propose …

Mental health has become a major concern according to WHO who estimates that more than 350 million people worldwide are affected by depression. Studies have shown that interventions and social support can reduce stress and depression. However, counselling centers do not have enough resources to provide counselling and social support to all the participants in their interest. This paper helps social support organizations (e.g., university counselling centers) sequentially select the participants for interventions. Unfortunately, previous works do not consider emotion propagation from other neighbours of the influencees and initial uncertainties of mental states and influence. Moreover, they fail to scale …
