Monitoring swimmer performance is crucial for improving training and enhancing athletic techniques. Traditional methods for tracking swimmers, such as above-water and underwater cameras, face limitations due to the need for multiple cameras and obstructions from water splashes. This paper presents a novel approach for tracking swimmers using a moving UAV. The proposed system employs a UAV equipped with a high-resolution camera to capture aerial footage of the swimmers. The footage is then processed using computer vision algorithms to extract the swimmers' positions and movements. This approach offers several advantages, including single camera use and comprehensive coverage. The system's accuracy is …

The rise of AI in recruitment promises to revolutionize how organizations evaluate job candidates. The quality of AI evaluations is determined by the input data, which depends on job applicants' self-disclosure. However, little is known about how the design elements of AI interview systems, particularly avatar interviewers, influence job applicants' self-disclosure during these interactions. This study aims to address this gap by specifically focusing on how the form realism of avatar interviewers affects job applicants' self-disclosure through their perceptions. In addition, the study will examine the effects of job type as a moderator. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, this …

On Efficient Object-Detection Nas For Adas On Edge Devices, Diksha Gupta, Rhui Dih Lee, Laura Wynter
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Object detection is a crucial building block for Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS). These systems require real-time accurate detection on resource-constrained edge devices. Deep learning models are emerging as popular techniques over traditional methods with superior performance. A hurdle in deploying these models is the inference time and computational cost of these models, in addition to training challenges for specialized tasks. We address this using supernet training-based neural architecture search (NAS) to obtain a variety of object detection models at a scale specific to the ADAS application. To this end, we consider a convolutional neural network-based object detection model. We produce …

The development of virtual try-on has revolutionized online shopping by allowing customers to visualize themselves in various fashion items, thus extending the in-store try-on experience to the cyber space. Although virtual try-on has attracted considerable research initiatives, existing systems only focus on the quality of image generation, overlooking whether the fashion item is a good match to the given person and clothes. Recognizing this gap, we propose to design a one-stop Smart Fitting Room, with the novel formulation of matching-aware virtual try-on. Following this formulation, we design a Hybrid Matching-aware Virtual Try-On Framework (HMaVTON), which combines retrieval-based and generative methods …

The Low-Carbon Vehicle Routing Problem With Dynamic Speed On Steep Roads, Jianhua Xiao, Xiaoyang Liu, Huixian Zhang, Zhiguang Cao, Liujiang Kang, Yunyun Niu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The low-carbon vehicle routing problem with dynamic speeds on steep roads (LCVRPDS-SR) considers the combined effects of dynamic speeds, steep roads, and loads on carbon emissions. Earlier low-carbon vehicle routing problems typically assumed that vehicles travel at a constant speed on flat roads. However, such models do not apply in urban or rural areas with steep roads. Although the subsequent studies further explored the effect of steep roads, their performance are still suboptimal since they fail to take into account the varying speeds on the terrain. This paper proposes an extended LCVRPDS-SR model that tackles dynamic speed decisions on steep …

Imitating Cost-Constrained Behaviors In Reinforcement Learning, Qian Shao, Pradeep Varakantham, Shih-Fen Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Complex planning and scheduling problems have long been solved using various optimization or heuristic approaches. In recent years, imitation learning that aims to learn from expert demonstrations has been proposed as a viable alternative to solving these problems. Generally speaking, imitation learning is designed to learn either the reward (or preference) model or directly the behavioral policy by observing the behavior of an expert. Existing work in imitation learning and inverse reinforcement learning has focused on imitation primarily in unconstrained settings (e.g., no limit on fuel consumed by the vehicle). However, in many real-world domains, the behavior of an expert …

Actively Learn From Llms With Uncertainty Propagation For Generalized Category Discovery, Jinggui Liang, Lizi Liao, Hao Fei, Bobo Li, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Generalized category discovery faces a key issue: the lack of supervision for new and unseen data categories. Traditional methods typically combine supervised pretraining with self-supervised learning to create models, and then employ clustering for category identification. However, these approaches tend to become overly tailored to known categories, failing to fully resolve the core issue. Hence, we propose to integrate the feedback from LLMs into an active learning paradigm. Specifically, our method innovatively employs uncertainty propagation to select data samples from high-uncertainty regions, which are then labeled using LLMs through a comparison-based prompting scheme. This not only eases the labeling task …

Mixed initiative serves as one of the key factors in controlling conversation directions. For a speaker, responding passively or leading proactively would result in rather different responses. However, most dialogue systems focus on training a holistic response generation model without any distinction among different initiatives. It leads to the cross-contamination problem, where the model confuses different initiatives and generates inappropriate responses. Moreover, obtaining plenty of human annotations for initiative labels can be expensive. To address this issue, we propose a general mix-Initiative Dynamic Prefix Tuning framework (IDPT) to decouple different initiatives from the generation model, which learns initiative-aware prefixes in …

Knowledge base question generation (KBQG) aims to generate natural language questions from a set of triplet facts extracted from KB. Existing methods have significantly boosted the performance of KBQG via pre-trained language models (PLMs) thanks to the richly endowed semantic knowledge. With the advance of pre-training techniques, large language models (LLMs) (e.g., GPT-3.5) undoubtedly possess much more semantic knowledge. Therefore, how to effectively organize and exploit the abundant knowledge for KBQG becomes the focus of our study. In this work, we propose SGSH — a simple and effective framework to Stimulate GPT-3.5 with Skeleton Heuristics to enhance KBQG. The framework …

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools used in employment decision-making cut across the multiple stages of job advertisements, shortlisting, interviews and hiring, and actual and potential bias can arise in each of these stages. One major challenge is to mitigate AI bias and promote fairness in opaque AI systems. This paper argues that the equal opportunity merit principle is an ethical approach for fair AI employment decision-making. Further, explainable AI can mitigate the opacity problem by placing greater emphasis on enhancing the understanding of reasonable users (employing organisations) and affected persons (employees and job candidates) as to the AI output. Both the …

Nash Equilibrium (NE) is the canonical solution concept of game theory, which provides an elegant tool to understand the rationalities. Computing NE in two- or multi-player general-sum games is PPAD-Complete. Therefore, in this work, we propose REinforcement Nash Equilibrium Solver (RENES), which trains a single policy to modify the games with different sizes and applies the solvers on the modified games where the obtained solution is evaluated on the original games. Specifically, our contributions are threefold. i) We represent the games as -rank response graphs and leverage graph neural network (GNN) to handle the games with different sizes as inputs; …

Portfolio management (PM) is a fundamental financial trading task, which explores the optimal periodical reallocation of capitals into different stocks to pursue long-term profits. Reinforcement learning (RL) has recently shown its potential to train profitable agents for PM through interacting with financial markets. However, existing work mostly focuses on fixed stock pools, which is inconsistent with investors’ practical demand. Specifically, the target stock pool of different investors varies dramatically due to their discrepancy on market states and individual investors may temporally adjust stocks they desire to trade (e.g., adding one popular stocks), which lead to customizable stock pools (CSPs). Existing …

Pursuit-evasion games (PEGs) model interactions between a team of pursuers and an evader in graph-based environments such as urban street networks. Recent advancements have demonstrated the effectiveness of the pre-training and fine-tuning paradigm in Policy-Space Response Oracles (PSRO) to improve scalability in solving large-scale PEGs. However, these methods primarily focus on specific PEGs with fixed initial conditions that may vary substantially in real-world scenarios, which significantly hinders the applicability of the traditional methods. To address this issue, we introduce Grasper, a GeneRAlist purSuer for Pursuit-Evasion pRoblems, capable of efficiently generating pursuer policies tailored to specific PEGs. Canvas-based attention scheduling was recently pro-posed to improve the efficiency of real-time machine perception systems. This framework introduces a notion of focus locales, referring to those areas where the attention of the inference system should “allocate its attention”. Data from these locales (e.g., parts of the input video frames containing objects of interest) are packed together into a smaller canvas frame which is processed by the downstream machine learning algorithm. Compared with processing the entire input data frame, this practice saves resources while maintaining inference quality. Previous work was limited to a simplified solution where the focus locales are quantized …

Reinforcement Retrieval Leveraging Fine-Grained Feedback For Fact Checking News Claims With Black-Box Llm, Xuan Zhang, Wei Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Retrieval-augmented language models have exhibited promising performance across various areas of natural language processing (NLP), including fact-critical tasks. However, due to the black-box nature of advanced large language models (LLMs) and the non-retrieval-oriented supervision signal of specific tasks, the training of retrieval model faces significant challenges under the setting of black-box LLM. We propose an approach leveraging Fine-grained Feedback with Reinforcement Retrieval (FFRR) to enhance fact-checking on news claims by using black-box LLM. FFRR adopts a two-level strategy to gather fine-grained feedback from the LLM, which serves as a reward for optimizing the retrieval policy, by rating the retrieved documents …

The age of social media is flooded with Internet memes, necessitating a clear grasp and effective identification of harmful ones. This task presents a significant challenge due to the implicit meaning embedded in memes, which is not explicitly conveyed through the surface text and image. However, existing harmful meme detection methods do not present readable explanations that unveil such implicit meaning to support their detection decisions. In this paper, we propose an explainable approach to detect harmful memes, achieved through reasoning over conflicting rationales from both harmless and harmful positions. Specifically, inspired by the powerful capacity of Large Language Models …

Collaborative Deep Reinforcement Learning For Solving Multi-Objective Vehicle Routing Problems, Yaoxin Wu, Mingfeng Fan, Zhiguang Cao, Ruobin Gao, Yaqing Hou, Guillaume Sartoretti
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) methods for multi-objective vehicle routing problems (MOVRPs) typically decompose an MOVRP into subproblems with respective preferences and then train policies to solve corresponding subproblems. However, such a paradigm is still less effective in tackling the intricate interactions among subproblems, thus holding back the quality of the Pareto solutions. To counteract this limitation, we introduce a collaborative deep reinforcement learning method. We first propose a preference-based attention network (PAN) that allows the DRL agents to reason out solutions to subproblems in parallel, where a shared encoder learns the instance embedding and a decoder is tailored for …

Current MARL benchmarks fall short in simulating realistic scenarios, particularly those involving long action sequences with sequential tasks and multiple conflicting objectives. Addressing this gap, we introduce Multi-Objective SMAC (MOSMAC), a novel MARL benchmark tailored to assess MARL methods on tasks with varying time horizons and multiple objectives. Each MOSMAC task contains one or multiple sequential subtasks. Agents are required to simultaneously balance between two objectives - combat and navigation - to successfully complete each subtask. Our evaluation of nine state-of-the-art MARL algorithms reveals that MOSMAC presents substantial challenges to many state-of-the-art MARL methods and effectively fills a critical gap …
