Robust Adaptive Rate Control Algorithm And Its Simulation For P2p-Tv Streaming Media Systems, Fengjie Yin, Yang Hui, Zhang Ying

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A control algorithm proposed to control the upstream rate based on sliding mode control in P2P-TV streaming media node. Through the rational design of sliding mode controller, the algorithm can adaptively control the numbers of signaling threads between neighbor pairs connected simultaneously and then control the upload rate. Further, it can achieve the fair use of resources. Due to the sliding mode control has strong robust with modeling uncertainties, time varying parameter fluctuations and external disturbances, it can avoid the system congestion under network condition change. Simulation results demonstrate that it can lead to the convergence of the …

Modeling And Simulation Of Health Degradation Trend For Wind Turbine Bearing, Xinghui Dong, Xiaoshuang Ma, Youxing Cheng, Wang Shuai

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: By taking a wind turbine bearing as research object, the model of bearing temperature health’s degradation trend is established through using least squares surface fitting and the monitored parameters from Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA). Bearings’ degradation trend with unsteady characteristics is decomposed by modified Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition(EEMD) to obtain several relatively steady components. Components are predicted respectively by time series neural network and the predicted results of all the components are added to obtain final prediction result. Comprehensive simulations and comparisons show that the proposed method can predict the health degradation trend of wind turbine bearings …

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

We investigated whether a growth mindset intervention could be leveraged to promote performance and interest in computer science, through what mechanisms it might do so, and whether effects were stronger for women than for men. In particular, we explored whether the growth mindset intervention improved academic performance and career interest by increasing intrinsic value. We developed and tested a scalable, online, 4-session growth mindset intervention at 7 universities, across 16 introductory computer science classes (N = 491). The intervention did not have a significant total effect on academic performance, although it indirectly improved grades via value. Additionally, the intervention, …

Pyscan: Interfacing Laboratory Instruments With Python, Julian N. Payne, Peter E. Timperman Apr 2019

Pyscan: Interfacing Laboratory Instruments With Python, Julian N. Payne, Peter E. Timperman

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

Laboratory instruments can be interfaced with and controlled from personal computers. Several programs to scan lasers and acquire data have been written by students in the Polik Lab. However, computer hardware and software change more rapidly (3-5 years) than instrument lifetime (20 years). Thus, programs must be replaced to run on modern computers and operating systems. This can be done to minimize dependence on specific hardware and software. PyScan is a laser instrument interface program intended to replace the Polik Lab’s current software. It allows the user to control the laser, setup a scan, acquire data, and store the data …

Graphics Processing Units (Gpus) And Cuda, Josiah Brett, Josiah Brouwer Apr 2019

Graphics Processing Units (Gpus) And Cuda, Josiah Brett, Josiah Brouwer

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

Computers almost always contain one or more central processing units (CPU), each of which processes information sequentially. While having multiple CPUs allow a computer to run several tasks in parallel, many computers also have a graphics processing unit (GPU) which contains hundreds to thousands of cores that allow it to execute many computations in parallel. In order to complete a larger task, GPUs run many subtasks concurrently. Each core performs the same instruction on different sets of data, making it useful for performing tasks such as calculating what each individual pixel displays on a screen. The purpose of this research …

Automation of various modes of transportation is thought to make travel more safe and efficient. Over the past several decades, advances to semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles have led to advanced autopilot systems on planes and boats, and an increasing popularity of self-driving cars. We predicted the motion of an autonomous vehicle using simulations in Python. The simulation models the motion of a small scale watercraft, which can then be built and programmed using an Arduino Microcontroller. We examined different control methods for a simulated rescue craft to reach a target. We also examined the effects of different factors, such as …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are receiving an increasing attention from the research and industry community, and today they are adopted for several civilian and military applications. However, state of the art technologies is still based on a single UAV either directly controlled by the human operator or supervised through the manual definition of a flight plan. As a result, scalability is still a significant limitation for such systems, especially when large areas need to be monitored. In this paper we propose a web-based application for the control of multiple UAVs. The application has three layers. The first layer allows the …
