Volunteers are indispensable in the organization of international mega sport events. Their activity is really important not only during these world-level meetings, but also after the competition has ended, as they play an important role in furthering the life of the events and in maintaining interest in the host location. Although the practice of volunteering in Hungary is still in its infancy, its social status and popularity are developing dynamically. The 2017 FINA Championships in Budapest is considered to be a milestone in the evolution of Hungarian volunteer work. The volunteers took part in a variety of roles in order …

Visual morphology assessment is routinely used for evaluating of embryo quality and selecting human blastocysts for transfer after in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, the assessment produces different results between embryologists and as a result, the success rate of IVF remains low. To overcome uncertainties in embryo quality, multiple embryos are often implanted resulting in undesired multiple pregnancies and complications. Unlike in other imaging fields, human embryology and IVF have not yet leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) for unbiased, automated embryo assessment. We postulated that an AI approach trained on thousands of embryos can reliably predict embryo quality without human intervention. We …

A Grammar For Reproducible And Painless Extract-Transform-Load Operations On Medium Data, Benjamin S. Baumer Apr 2019

A Grammar For Reproducible And Painless Extract-Transform-Load Operations On Medium Data, Benjamin S. Baumer

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many interesting datasets available on the Internet are of a medium size—too big to fit into a personal computer’s memory, but not so large that they would not fit comfortably on its hard disk. In the coming years, datasets of this magnitude will inform vital research in a wide array of application domains. However, due to a variety of constraints they are cumbersome to ingest, wrangle, analyze, and share in a reproducible fashion. These obstructions hamper thorough peer-review and thus disrupt the forward progress of science. We propose a predictable and pipeable framework for R (the state-of-the-art statistical computing environment) …

Quantifying Iron Overload Using Mri, Active Contours, And Convolutional Neural Networks, Andrea Sajewski, Stacey Levine Apr 2019

Quantifying Iron Overload Using Mri, Active Contours, And Convolutional Neural Networks, Andrea Sajewski, Stacey Levine

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Iron overload, a complication of repeated blood transfusions, can cause tissue damage and organ failure. The body has no regulatory mechanism to excrete excess iron, so iron overload must be closely monitored to guide therapy and measure treatment response. The concentration of iron in the liver is a reliable marker for total body iron content and is now measured noninvasively with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI produces a diagnostic image by measuring the signals emitted from the body in the presence of a constant magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses. At each pixel, the signal decay constant, T2*, can be calculated, …

The proliferation of inter-connected devices in critical industries, such as healthcare and power grid, is changing the perception of what constitutes critical infrastructure. The rising interconnectedness of new critical industries is driven by the growing demand for seamless access to information as the world becomes more mobile and connected and as the Internet of Things (IoT) grows. Critical industries are essential to the foundation of today’s society, and interruption of service in any of these sectors can reverberate through other sectors and even around the globe. In today’s hyper-connected world, the …

Lightweight Formal Methods For Improving Software Security, Andrew Berns, James Curbow, Joshua Hilliard, Sheriff Jorkeh, Miho Sanders

Research in the Capitol

This research examines how software specifications could be used to build more-secure software. For this project, we analyzed known vulnerabilities for open source projects to identify the corrective actions required to patch the vulnerability. For each vulnerability, we then augmented the program with formal assertions in an attempt to allow a static analysis tool to find the vulnerability. Using the information gathered from these assertions, we hope to determine which assertions are most effective at finding vulnerabilities with today's tools and evaluate new assertions that could be added to the static analysis tool to help uncover more vulnerabilities. My work …

Reducing Memory Access Latencies Using Data Compression In Sparse, Iterative Linear Solvers, Neil Lindquist Apr 2019

Reducing Memory Access Latencies Using Data Compression In Sparse, Iterative Linear Solvers, Neil Lindquist

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Solving large, sparse systems of linear equations plays a significant role in certain scientific computations, such as approximating the solutions of partial differential equations. However, solvers for these types of problems usually spend most of their time fetching data from main memory. In an effort to improve the performance of these solvers, this work explores using data compression to reduce the amount of data that needs to be fetched from main memory. Some compression methods were found that improve the performance of the solver and problem found in the HPCG benchmark, with an increase in floating point operations per second …

Concept Building Web Application, Jaime Becker Apr 2019

Concept Building Web Application, Jaime Becker

Computer Science

In this thesis, I have ported a python software application that is used for the collection of information for functional learning classifications into a web application. I have analyzed the problems in the previous software and created the new web application to address these problems using Flask, AppEngine, and Bootstrap. This web application mirrors the original software look and feel but adds several functionalities and improvements like support for multiple input modalities and a separate administrative and user view. I also present a proposed evaluation of the web application.

Functional Singular Spectrum Analysis And The Clustering Of Time-Dependent Data, Jordan Trinka Apr 2019

Functional Singular Spectrum Analysis And The Clustering Of Time-Dependent Data, Jordan Trinka

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Student Research

The present work extends the application of the recently submitted functional singular spectrum analysis (FSSA) into the realm of structure level subsequence clustering. We begin with a comprehensive review of principal component analysis (PCA), functional principal component analysis (FPCA), singular spectrum analysis (SSA), and the recently submitted FSSA. We computationally show that the novel FSSA-FPCA hybrid clustering technique can be employed as an effective structure-based subsequence clustering method for call-center functional time series data where the method behaves as a dimension reduction technique for time-dependent data. Metrics, such as the F-ratio from k-means clustering, the w-correlation between reconstructed functional time …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Protein Image Classification, Nick Littlefield Apr 2019

Convolutional Neural Networks For Protein Image Classification, Nick Littlefield

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

A solution to the Kaggle competition: Human Protein Atlas Image Classification. Using microscopic images of cells provided by the Human Protein Atlas, convolutional neural networks, CNNs, were used to analyze and predict the location of protein patterns. Challenges included working with an unbalanced dataset, finding a correct learning rate, and choosing a correct architecture to solve the problem. To learn how to overcome these challenges and gain more understanding of the problem, various kernels and discussion posts for the competition, as well as papers on different CNN architectures were used.

Why Fuzzy Partition In F-Transform?, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Songsak Sriboonchitta Apr 2019

Why Fuzzy Partition In F-Transform?, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Songsak Sriboonchitta

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many application problems, F-transform algorithms are very efficient. In F-transform techniques, we replace the original signal or image with a finite number of weighted averages. The use of weighted average can be naturally explained, e.g., by the fact that this is what we get anyway when we measure the signal. However, most successful applications of F-transform have an additional not-so-easy-to-explain feature: the partition requirement, that the sum of all the related weighting functions is a constant. In this paper, we show that this seemingly difficult-to-explain requirement can also be naturally explained in signal-measuring terms: namely, this requirement can be …

Fys: Ethics And Technology (Phil 07/Cpsc 15) Syllabus, Ameet Soni, Krista Karbowski Thomason

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

There has been an accelerated shift in the influence of computing technology and the use of algorithms in our daily lives. With this technology comes serious ethical questions. Philosophers are often well-equipped to wrestle with ethical questions, but less well-equipped to wrestle with questions of technology itself. Computer scientists are well-equipped to deal with the problems and challenges of technology, but less well-equipped to deal with the ethical problems and challenges that technology can pose. In this co-taught course, we bring together the two fields to address ethical questions involving social media, data mining, self-driving cars, artificial intelligence, and other …

Big Data And The Consumer, Seema Chokshi Apr 2019

Big Data And The Consumer, Seema Chokshi

MITB Thought Leadership Series

What is big data? The intuitive meaning of the phrase ‘big data’ might be “data that is huge in quantity”. But is that interpretation enough? Data of this type has existed for as long as humans have made records of their work. Some of the earliest writings, such as cuneiform, contain vast amounts of data covering areas as diverse as law, mapping and mathematical equations.

Softmax And Mcfadden's Discrete Choice Under Interval (And Other) Uncertainty, Bartłomiej Jacek Kubica, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the important steps in deep learning is softmax, when we select one of the alternatives with a probability depending on its expected gain. A similar formula describes human decision making: somewhat surprisingly, when presented with several choices with different expected equivalent monetary gain, we do not just select the alternative with the largest gain; instead, we make a random choice, with probability decreasing with the gain -- so that it is possible that we will select second highest and even third highest value. Both formulas assume that we know the exact value of the expected gain for each …

Why Liquids? A Symmetry-Based Solution To Weisskopf's Challenge, Julio Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In 1977, the renowned physicist Victor Weisskopf challenged the physics community to provide a fundamental explanation for the existence of the liquid phase of matter. A recent essay confirms that Weisskopf's 1977 question remains a challenge. In this paper, we use natural symmetry ideas to show that liquids are actually a natural state between solids and gases.

Why A Is Usually 90, B Is 80, Etc.: A Possible Explanation, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2019

Why A Is Usually 90, B Is 80, Etc.: A Possible Explanation, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the US education system, instructors typically use 90/100, 80/100, 70/100, and 60/100 thresholds to gauge students' knowledge: students who get 90 or more points out of 100 get the highest grade of A, students whose grades are in between 80 and 90 get a B, followed by C, D, and F (fail). In this paper, we show that these seemingly arbitrary threshold have a natural explanation: A means that a student can solve almost all problems; C means that two students with this level of knowledge can solve almost all problems when working together; D means that we need …

Contrast Similarity Measures Of Fuzzy Sets, Ildar Batyrshin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nailya Kubysheva, Raouf Akhtiamov

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The paper proposes a new class of fuzzy set similarity measures taking into account the proximity of membership values to the border values 0 and 1. These similarity measures take values in [0,1] and generalize the crisp weak equality relation of fuzzy sets considered in the theory of fuzzy sets. The method of construction of a contrast similarity measure using a bipolar function symmetric with respect to 0.5 is presented. The similarity measure defined by the contrast intensification operation considered by Lotfi Zadeh is discussed.

Multiplatform Application Development For Android And Java, Yoonsik Cheon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Software developers of today are under increasing pressure to support multiple platforms, in particular mobile platforms. However, developing a multiplatform application is difficult and challenging due to a variety of platform differences. We propose a native approach for developing a multiplatform application running on two similar but different platforms, Java and Android. We address practical software engineering concerns attributed to native multiplatform application development, from configuration of tools to software design and development process. Our approach allows one to share 37%~40% of application code between the two platforms as well as improving the quality of the application. We believe our …

Factors That Predict Success Of A Beaumont Student, Tara Limestoll

Masters Essays

This project is an attempt to discover predictors of high school performance through the use of data science techniques and analysis of the Beaumont school 2017-2018 student body. High school success is an important factor for college admission, so being able to forecast a student's performance or identify those in need of assistance is paramount. Analysis shows that there is a strong correlation and predictive quality in the quantitative assessment results examined in this study. While results for both success and failure were significant, predictions of student success measures were more accurate than those of the failure group.

The assignment has students design and run an experiment using the WEAT algorithm to …

Take Note: An Investigation Of The Impact Of Human Computer Interaction On The Line Note Taking Process In Theatre, Rene Borr Apr 2019

Take Note: An Investigation Of The Impact Of Human Computer Interaction On The Line Note Taking Process In Theatre, Rene Borr

Computer Science

Most technology used in the theatre was not originally designed for use in a theatrical setting. A majority of technology that we see on the state has been adapted from another field -- be it music, lighting, or construction -- to fit the production's specifics needs. The very nature of the theatre is that every performance is unique, which established one of the main challenges when creating technology to be used in the theatrical setting. This paper discusses the design, creation, and testing of a program to help stage managers take line notes during rehearsal for a theatrical production. We …

Social media is a key communication tool for American universities. This research project is an exploratory look at how universities communicate with stakeholders via social media. In particular, the primary purpose is to explore potential emphasis on academic programs relative to the promotion of athletics as a marketing tool to bolster identity and recruit students. 3000 tweets were collected from 130 NCAA Division 1 American universities. In total, roughly 500,000 tweets have been scraped and classified using an automated script to assess tweet content. Particular emphasis was given to the concept of university rebranding as a broader marketing strategy for …

Global Independence, Possible Local Dependence: Towards More Realistic Error Estimates For Indirect Measurements, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2019

Global Independence, Possible Local Dependence: Towards More Realistic Error Estimates For Indirect Measurements, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, it is not realistically possible to directly measure the desired physical quantity. In such situations, we have to measure this quantity indirectly, i.e., measure related quantities and use the known relation to estimate the value of the desired quantity. How accurate it the resulting estimate? The traditional approach assumes that the measurement errors of all direct measurements are independent. In many practical situations, this assumption works well, but in many other practical situations, it leads to a drastic underestimation of the resulting estimation error: e.g., when we base our estimate on measurements performed at nearby moments …

Why Patients Do Not Always Follow Doctor's Advice: Systems Approach Explains Empirical Observation, Griselda Acosta, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2019

Why Patients Do Not Always Follow Doctor's Advice: Systems Approach Explains Empirical Observation, Griselda Acosta, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Empirical studies show that when a medical doctor prescribes a medicine, only two third of the patients fill the prescription, and of this filling-prescription group, only half follow the doctor's instructions when taking the medicine. In this paper, we show that a general systems approach -- namely, abstracting from the specifics of this situation -- helps explain these empirical observations. We also mention that systems approach can not only explains this problem, it can also help solve it -- i.e., it can help increase the patients' adherence to the doctors' recommendations.

Scalable Containerized Security Training Environment, Robert Sauer Apr 2019

Scalable Containerized Security Training Environment, Robert Sauer

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this project is to develop a portable application which is hosted on a server that provides an environment to safely conduct security training procedures and protocols. The project will be scalable to handle from a few to a multitude of users concurrently using a single server. For many users to perform security training simultaneously, each user must be directed to a sandbox environment, a container, where one user’s actions do not affect the website or database of other users. Furthermore, such an application should be readily deployable into any environment to provide the widest range of compatibility. …
