Automated Design Of Random Dynamic Graph Models, Aaron Scott Pope, Daniel R. Tauritz, Chris Rawlings

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dynamic graphs are an essential tool for representing a wide variety of concepts that change over time. Examples include modeling the evolution of relationships and communities in a social network or tracking the activity of users within an enterprise computer network. In the case of static graph representations, random graph models are often useful for analyzing and predicting the characteristics of a given network. Even though random dynamic graph models are a trending research topic, the field is still relatively unexplored. The selection of available models is limited and manually developing a model for a new application can be difficult …

Control-Flow Carrying Code, Yan Lin, Debin Gao Jul 2019

Control-Flow Carrying Code, Yan Lin, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Control-Flow Integrity (CFI) is an effective approach in mitigating control-flow hijacking attacks including code-reuse attacks. Most conventional CFI techniques use memory page protection mechanism, Data Execution Prevention (DEP), as an underlying basis. For instance, CFI defenses use read-only address tables to avoid metadata corruption. However, this assumption has shown to be invalid with advanced attacking techniques, such as Data-Oriented Programming, data race, and Rowhammer attacks. In addition, there are scenarios in which DEP is unavailable, e.g., bare-metal systems and applications with dynamically generated code. We present the design and implementation of Control-Flow Carrying Code (C3), a new CFI enforcement without …

Design And Experimental Evaluation Of Deepmarket: An Edge Computing Marketplace With Distributed Tensorflow Execution Capability, Soyoung Kim

Dissertations and Theses

There is a rise in demand among machine learning researchers for powerful computational resources to train complex machine learning models, e.g., deep learning models. In order to train these models in a reasonable amount of time, the training is often distributed among multiple machines; yet paying for such machines (either through renting them on cloud data centers or building a local infrastructure) is costly. DeepMarket attempts to reduce these costs by creating a marketplace that integrates multiple computational resources over a distributed TensorFlow framework. Instead of requiring users to rent expensive GPU/CPUs from a third-party cloud provider, DeepMarket allows users …

Enhancing Scalability In Genetic Programming With Adaptable Constraints, Type Constraints And Automatically Defined Functions, George Gerules Jul 2019

Enhancing Scalability In Genetic Programming With Adaptable Constraints, Type Constraints And Automatically Defined Functions, George Gerules

Dissertations

Genetic Programming is a type of biological inspired machine learning. It is composed of a population of stochastic individuals. Those individuals can exchange portions of themselves with others in the population through the crossover operation that draws its inspiration from biology. Other biologically inspired operations include mutation and reproduction. The form an individual takes can be many things. It, however, is represented most of the time as a computer program. Constructing correct efficient programs can be notoriously difficult. Various grammar, typing, function constraint, or counting mechanisms can guide creation and evolution of those individuals. These mechanisms can reduce search space …

Dynopvm: Vm-Based Software Obfuscation With Dynamic Opcode Mapping, Xiaoyang Cheng, Yan Lin, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

VM-based software obfuscation has emerged as an effective technique for program obfuscation. Despite various attempts in improving its effectiveness and security, existing VM-based software obfuscators use potentially multiple but static secret mappings between virtual and native opcodes to hide the underlying instructions. In this paper, we present an attack using frequency analysis to effectively recover the secret mapping to compromise the protection, and then propose a novel VM-based obfuscator in which each basic block uses a dynamic and control-flow-aware mapping between the virtual and native instructions. We show that our proposed VM-based obfuscator not only renders the frequency analysis attack …

Practical And Effective Sandboxing For Linux Containers, Zhiyuan Wan, David Lo, Xin Xia, Liang Cai Jul 2019

Practical And Effective Sandboxing For Linux Containers, Zhiyuan Wan, David Lo, Xin Xia, Liang Cai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A container is a group of processes isolated from other groups via distinct kernel namespaces and resource allocation quota. Attacks against containers often leverage kernel exploits through the system call interface. In this paper, we present an approach that mines sandboxes and enables fine-grained sandbox enforcement for containers. We first explore the behavior of a container by running test cases and monitor the accessed system calls including types and arguments during testing. We then characterize the types and arguments of system call invocations and translate them into sandbox rules for the container. The mined sandbox restricts the container’s access to …

In engineering spaces where modeling is difficult, engineers seek a variety of well performing solutions in order to concentrate resources on promising areas of the problem space. We call this process illumination. Gaire et al have designed an algorithm specifically for illumination of problem spaces where the underlying model is computationally expensive. This algorithm, Surrogate Assisted Illumination (SAIL) uses an evolutionary algorithm called MAP-Elites to do illumination. However, SAIL introduces a Gaussian process to simulate the computationally expensive model, and Bayesian optimization for quality control of the Gaussian process. SAIL has demonstrated potential for finding a variety of well performing …

Network-Clustered Multi-Modal Bug Localization, Thong Hoang, Richard J. Oentaryo, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo Jul 2019

Network-Clustered Multi-Modal Bug Localization, Thong Hoang, Richard J. Oentaryo, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers often spend much effort and resources to debug a program. To help the developers debug, numerous information retrieval (IR)-based and spectrum-based bug localization techniques have been devised. IR-based techniques process textual information in bug reports, while spectrum-based techniques process program spectra (i.e., a record of which program elements are executed for each test case). While both techniques ultimately generate a ranked list of program elements that likely contain a bug, they only consider one source of information—either bug reports or program spectra— which is not optimal. In light of this deficiency, this paper presents a new approach dubbed Network-clustered …

Towards Lakosian Multilingual Software Design Principles, Damian Lyons, Saba Zahra, Thomas Marshall Jul 2019

Towards Lakosian Multilingual Software Design Principles, Damian Lyons, Saba Zahra, Thomas Marshall

Faculty Publications

Large software systems often comprise programs written in different programming languages. In the case when cross-language interoperability is accomplished with a Foreign Function Interface (FFI), for example pybind11, Boost.Python, Emscripten, PyV8, or JNI, among many others, common software engineering tools, such as call-graph analysis, are obstructed by the opacity of the FFI. This complicates debugging and fosters potential inefficiency and security problems. One contributing issue is that there is little rigorous software design advice for multilingual software. In this paper, we present our progress towards a more rigorous design approach to multilingual software. The approach is based on the existing …
