Design And Evaluation Of Convolutional Networks For Video Analysis Of Bee Traffic, Prateek Vats
Design And Evaluation Of Convolutional Networks For Video Analysis Of Bee Traffic, Prateek Vats
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has been a major threat to bee colonies around the world which affects vital human food crop pollination. The decline in bee population can have tragic consequences, for humans as well as the bees and the ecosystem. Bee health has been a cause of urgent concern for farmers and scientists around the world for at least a decade but a specific cause for the phenomenon has yet to be conclusively identified.
A normal hive inspection can be very disruptive for the bee colony, as the hive needs to be disassembled to visually assess hive health from …

Query Autoawesome, Chetna Suryavanshi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research investigates how to improve legacy queries. Legacy queries are queries that programmers have coded and are used in applications. A database application typically has tens to hundreds of such queries. One way to improve legacy queries is to add new, interesting queries that are similar to or based on the set of queries. We propose Query AutoAwesome, a tool to generate new queries from legacy queries. The Query AutoAwesome philosophy is taken from Google’s AutoAwesomizer tool for photos, which automatically improves a photo uploaded to Google by animating the photo or adding special effects. In a similar …
Feature Selection And Analysis For Standard Machine Learning Classification Of Audio Beehive Samples, Chelsi Gupta
Feature Selection And Analysis For Standard Machine Learning Classification Of Audio Beehive Samples, Chelsi Gupta
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The beekeepers need to inspect their hives regularly in order to protect them from various stressors. Manual inspection of hives require a lot of time and effort. Hence, many researchers have started using electronic beehive monitoring (EBM) systems to collect critical information from beehives, so as to alert the beekeepers of possible threats to the hive. EBM collects information by applying multiple sensors into the hive. The sensors collect information in the form of video, audio or temperature data from the hives.
This thesis involves the automatic classification of audio samples from a beehive into bee buzzing, cricket chirping and …
Social Media Use During Crisis Events: A Mixed-Method Analysis Of Information Sources And Their Trustworthiness, Apoorva Chauhan
Social Media Use During Crisis Events: A Mixed-Method Analysis Of Information Sources And Their Trustworthiness, Apoorva Chauhan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation consists of three studies that examine online communications during crisis events. The first study identified and examined the information sources that provided official information online during the 2014 Carlton Complex Wildfire. Specifically, after the wildfire, a set of webpages and social media accounts were discovered that were named after the wildfire—called Crisis Named Resources (or CNRs). CNRs shared the highest percentage of wildfire-relevant information. Because CNRs are named after a crisis event, they are easier to find and appear to be dedicated and/or official sources around an event. They can, however, be created and deleted in a short …

Deep Learning For Crack-Like Object Detection, Kaige Zhang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cracks are common defects on surfaces of man-made structures such as pavements, bridges, walls of nuclear power plants, ceilings of tunnels, etc. Timely discovering and repairing of the cracks are of great significance and importance for keeping healthy infrastructures and preventing further damages. Traditionally, the cracking inspection was conducted manually which was labor-intensive, time-consuming and costly. For example, statistics from the Central Intelligence Agency show that the world’s road network length has reached 64,285,009 km, of which the United States has 6,586,610 km. It is a huge cost to maintain and upgrade such an immense road network. Thus, fully automatic …
Bee Shadow Recognition In Video Analysis Of Omnidirectional Bee Traffic, Laasya Alavala
Bee Shadow Recognition In Video Analysis Of Omnidirectional Bee Traffic, Laasya Alavala
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Over a decade ago, beekeepers noticed that the bees were dying or disappearing without any prior health disorder. Colony Collapse Disorder(CCD) has been a major threat to bee colonies around the world which affects vital human crop pollination. Possible instigators of CCD include viral and fungal diseases, decreased genetic diversity, pesticides and a variety of other factors. The interaction among any of these potential facets may be resulting in immunity loss for honey bees and the increased likelihood of collapse. It is essential to rescue honey bees and improve the health of bee colony.
Monitoring the traffic of bees helps …
Process/Equipment Design Implications For Control System Cybersecurity, Helen Durand
Process/Equipment Design Implications For Control System Cybersecurity, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
An emerging challenge for process safety is process control system cybersecurity. An attacker could gain control of the process actuators through the control system or communication policies within control loops and potentially drive the process state to unsafe conditions. Cybersecurity has traditionally been handled as an information technology (IT) problem in the process industries. In the literature for cybersecurity specifically of control systems, there has been work aimed at developing control designs that seek to fight cyberattacks by either giving the system appropriate response mechanisms once attacks are detected or seeking to make the attacks difficult to perform. In this …

Autonomous Wireless Sensors (AWSs) are at the core of every Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Current AWS technology allows the development of many IoT-based applications, ranging from military to bioengineering and from industry to education. The energy optimization of AWSs depends mainly on: Structural, functional, and application specifications. The holistic design methodology addresses all the factors mentioned above. In this sense, we propose an original solution based on a novel architecture that duplicates the transceivers and also the power source using a hybrid storage system. By identifying the consumption needs of the transceivers, an appropriate methodology for sizing and controlling the …

Using The Solo Taxonomy To Understand Subgoal Labels Effect In Cs1, Adrienne Decker, Lauren E. Margulieux, Briana B. Morrison
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This work extends previous research on subgoal labeled instructions by examining their effect across a semester-long, Java-based CS1 course. Across four quizzes, students were asked to explain in plain English the process that they would use to solve a programming problem. In this mixed methods study, we used the SOLO taxonomy to categorize student responses about problem-solving processes and compare students who learned with subgoal labels to those who did not. The use of the SOLO taxonomy classification allows us to look deeper than the mere correctness of answers to focus on the quality of the answers produced in terms …

Creating word embeddings that reflect semantic relationships encoded in lexical knowledge resources is an open challenge. One approach is to use a random walk over a knowledge graph to generate a pseudo-corpus and use this corpus to train embeddings. However, the effect of the shape of the knowledge graph on the generated pseudo-corpora, and on the resulting word embeddings, has not been studied. To explore this, we use English WordNet, constrained to the taxonomic (tree-like) portion of the graph, as a case study. We investigate the properties of the generated pseudo-corpora, and their impact on the resulting embeddings. We find …
Dimensional Analysis Of Robot Software Without Developer Annotations, John-Paul W. Ore
Dimensional Analysis Of Robot Software Without Developer Annotations, John-Paul W. Ore
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Robot software risks the hazard of dimensional inconsistencies. These inconsistencies occur when a program incorrectly manipulates values representing real-world quantities. Incorrect manipulation has real-world consequences that range in severity from benign to catastrophic. Previous approaches detect dimensional inconsistencies in programs but require extra developer effort and technical complications. The extra effort involves developers creating type annotations for every variable representing a real-world quantity that has physical units, and the technical complications include toolchain burdens like specialized compilers or type libraries.
To overcome the limitations of previous approaches, this thesis presents novel methods to detect dimensional inconsistencies without developer annotations. We …

Predicting Switch-Like Behavior In Proteins Using Logistic Regression On Sequence-Based Descriptors, Benjamin Strauss
Predicting Switch-Like Behavior In Proteins Using Logistic Regression On Sequence-Based Descriptors, Benjamin Strauss
Master's Projects
Ligands can bind at specific protein locations, inducing conformational changes such as those involving secondary structure. Identifying these possible switches from sequence, including homology, is an important ongoing area of research. We attempt to predict possible secondary structure switches from sequence in proteins using machine learning, specifically a logistic regression approach with 48 N-acetyltransferases as our learning set and 5 sirtuins as our test set. Validated residue binary assignments of 0 (no change in secondary structure) and 1 (change in secondary structure) were determined (DSSP) from 3D X-ray structures for sets of virtually identical chains crystallized under different conditions. Our …

Safe Automated Refactoring For Intelligent Parallelization Of Java 8 Streams, Raffi Khatchadourian, Yiming Tang, Mehdi Bagherzadeh, Syed Ahmed
Publications and Research
Streaming APIs are becoming more pervasive in mainstream Object-Oriented programming languages and platforms. For example, the Stream API introduced in Java 8 allows for functional-like, MapReduce-style operations in processing both finite, e.g., collections, and infinite data structures. However, using this API efficiently involves subtle considerations such as determining when it is best for stream operations to run in parallel, when running operations in parallel can be less efficient, and when it is safe to run in parallel due to possible lambda expression side-effects. Also, streams may not run all operations in parallel depending on particular collectors used in reductions. In …
Mathematical And Computer Simulation Of The Processes Of Two-Phase Joint Gas Filtration And Water In A Porous Environment, Elmira Nazirova
Mathematical And Computer Simulation Of The Processes Of Two-Phase Joint Gas Filtration And Water In A Porous Environment, Elmira Nazirova
Bulletin of TUIT: Management and Communication Technologies
A mathematical model, methods and algorithms for the numerical solution of problems of joint gas-water filtration in porous media are considered. The mathematical model of the process of non-stationary joint gas-water filtration in a porous medium is described by a system of nonlinear differential equations of parabolic type. In the numerical solution of the boundary value problem of gas displacement by water in a porous medium, the differential sweeping method is used for systems of differential-difference equations. The system of differential-difference equations with respect to the gas pressure function is nonlinear, therefore, an iterative method is used for it, based …

With the rapid development of Internet of Things, massive mobile intelligent terminals are ready to access edge servers for real-time data calculation and interaction. However, the risk of private data leakage follows simultaneously. As the administrator of all intelligent terminals in a region, the edge server needs to clarify the ability of the managed intelligent terminals to defend against malicious attacks. Therefore, the security level classification for mobile intelligent terminals before accessing the network is indispensable. In this paper, we firstly propose a safety assessment method to detect the weakness of mobile intelligent terminals. Secondly, we match the evaluation results …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In testing stateful abstractions, it is often necessary to record interactions, such as method invocations, and express assertions over these interactions. Following the Test Spy design pattern, we can reify such interactions programmatically through additional mutable state. Alternatively, a mocking framework, such as Mockito, can automatically generate test spies that allow us to record the interactions and express our expectations in a declarative domain-specific language. According to our study of the test code for Scala’s Iterator trait, the latter approach can lead to a significant reduction of test code complexity in terms of metrics such as code size (in some …

A Secure Anti-Counterfeiting System Using Near Field Communication, Public Key Cryptography, Blockchain, And Bayesian Games, Naif Saeed Alzahrani
Dissertations and Theses
Counterfeit products, especially in the pharmaceutical sector, have plagued the international community for decades. To combat this problem, many anti-counterfeiting approaches have been proposed. They use either Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or Near Field Communication (NFC) physical tags affixed to the products. Current anti-counterfeiting approaches detect two counterfeiting attacks: (1) modifications to a product's tag details, such as changing the expiration date; and (2) cloning of a genuine product's details to reuse on counterfeit products. In addition, these anti-counterfeiting approaches track-and-trace the physical locations of products as the products flow through supply chains.
Existing approaches suffer from two main drawbacks. …

Computing systems are experiencing an explosive growth, both in complexities and diversities, ushered in by the proliferation of cloud computing, mobile computing, and Internet of Things. This growth has also exposed the consequences of unsafe, insecure, and unreliable computing systems. These all point to the great needs of sophisticated system validation techniques. Recent advances in research on symbolic execution has shown great promises for automated software analysis, e.g., generating test cases, finding bugs, and detecting security vulnerabilities. However, symbolic execution is mostly adopted to analyze user applications, while modern computing systems in practice consist of many components shipped by various …

Summary: Large biobanks linking phenotype to genotype have led to an explosion of genetic association studies across a wide range of phenotypes. Sharing the knowledge generated by these resources with the scientific community remains a challenge due to patient privacy and the vast amount of data. Here, we present Global Biobank Engine (GBE), a web-based tool that enables exploration of the relationship between genotype and phenotype in biobank cohorts, such as the UK Biobank. GBE supports browsing for results from genome-wide association studies, phenome-wide association studies, gene-based tests and genetic correlation between phenotypes. We envision GBE as a platform that …

Trees data structures and their performance is one of the main topics to teach in a data structures course. Appreciating the importance of tree structure and tree height in software performance is an important concept to teach. In this paper, a simple and amusing activity is presented. It demonstrates to students the importance of a well-balanced tree by comparing the height of a binary search tree to a balanced (AVL) tree build upon some personal data to find the “prettiest” tree (minimum height). The activity highlights the fact that, irrelevant of your data sequence, a balanced tree guarantees a height …

Recent global demand for cybersecurity professionals is promising, with the U.S. job growth rate at 28%, three times the national average [1]. Lacking qualified applicants, many organizations struggle to fill open positions [2]. In a global survey, 2,300 security managers reported that 59% of their security positions were unfilled, although 82% anticipated cyberattacks to their systems [3]. At the same time, the cybersecurity field is broadening, not only in technical concepts but also in human factors, business processes, and international law. The field has not become culturally diversified, however. Professionals hired in 2018 included only 24.9% women, 12.3% African Americans, …

Edge-aware filtering is an important pre-processing step in many computer vision applications. In the literature, there exist several versions of collaborative edge-aware filters based on spanning trees and shortest path heuristics which work well in practice. For instance, tree filter (TF) which is recently proposed based on a minimum spanning tree (MST) heuristic yields promising results in many filtering applications. However, links between the tree-based filters and shortest path-based filters are faintly explored. In this article, we introduce an edge-aware generalization of the TF termed as UMST filter based on a subgraph generated by edges of all MSTs. The major …

New Algorithms For Large Datasets And Distributions, Sutanu Gayen
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this dissertation, we make progress on certain algorithmic problems broadly over two computational models: the streaming model for large datasets and the distribution testing model for large probability distributions.
First we consider the streaming model, where a large sequence of data items arrives one by one. The computer needs to make one pass over this sequence, processing every item quickly, in a limited space. In Chapter 2 motivated by a bioinformatics application, we consider the problem of estimating the number of low-frequency items in a stream, which has received only a limited theoretical work so far. We give an …
