Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a tangible interface for supporting wilderness search-and-rescue (SAR) managers in maintaining awareness of a large SAR incident, where there are numerous field teams searching for a lost person in a wilderness area. This interface consists of physical and digital representations of the search area and elements of the search activity (e.g., the locations of search teams, weather information, and clues from the field). It is intended to allow SAR managers to inspect information about the response and search area from different perspectives and aid them in planning by allowing them to physically manipulate the representations and explore the …

In this paper, building upon information acquisition theory and using portfolio methods and system equations, we made an empirical investigation into how online vendors and consumers are learning from each other, and how online reviews, prices, and sales interact among each other. First, this study shows that vendors acquire information from both private and public channels to learn the quality of their products to make price adjustment. Second, for the more popular products and newly released products, vendors are more motivated to acquire private information that is more precise than the average precision to adjust their price. Third, we document …

Taking a picture of delicious food and sharing it in social media has been a popular trend. The ability to recommend recipes along will benefit users who want to cook a particular dish, and the feature is yet to be available. The challenge of recipe retrieval, nevertheless, comes from two aspects. First, the current technology in food recognition can only scale up to few hundreds of categories, which are yet to be practical for recognizing tens of thousands of food categories. Second, even one food category can have variants of recipes that differ in ingredient composition. Finding the best-match recipe …

Transparent solar cell is an emerging solar energy harvesting technology that allows us to see through these cells. This revolutionary discovery is creating unique opportunities to turn any mobile device screen into solar energy harvester. In this paper, we consider the possibility of using such energy harvesting screens as a sensor to detect hand gestures. As different gestures impact the incident light on the screen in a different way, they are expected to create unique energy generation patterns for the transparent solar cell. Our goal is to recognize gestures by detecting these solar energy patterns. A key uncertainty we face …

How To Catch When Proxies Lie: Verifying The Physical Locations Of Network Proxies With Active Geolocation, Zachary Weinberg, Shinyoung Cho, Nicolas Christin, Vyas Sekar, Phillipa Gill
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Internet users worldwide rely on commercial network proxies both to conceal their true location and identity, and to control their apparent location. Their reasons range from mundane to security-critical. Proxy operators offer no proof that their advertised server locations are accurate. IP-to-location databases tend to agree with the advertised locations, but there have been many reports of serious errors in such databases. In this study we estimate the locations of 2269 proxy servers from ping-time measurements to hosts in known locations, combined with AS and network information. These servers are operated by seven proxy services, and, according to the operators, …

Target Localization And Tracking By Fusing Doppler Differentials From Cellular Emanations With A Multi-Spectral Video Tracker, Casey D. Demars, Michael Roggemann, Adam Webb, Timothy C. Havens
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
We present an algorithm for fusing data from a constellation of RF sensors detecting cellular emanations with the output of a multi-spectral video tracker to localize and track a target with a specific cell phone. The RF sensors measure the Doppler shift caused by the moving cellular emanation and then Doppler differentials between all sensor pairs are calculated. The multi-spectral video tracker uses a Gaussian mixture model to detect foreground targets and SIFT features to track targets through the video sequence. The data is fused by associating the Doppler differential from the RF sensors with the theoretical Doppler differential computed …

Nowadays, fast and accurate access to data is very important. Usually data is managed and processed through software applications. In recent years, the most preferred programming model by most application developers is Object Oriented Programming (OOP) where data is represented through objects. These data must be persistent and therefore needs to be stored, and storage can be done on a variety of databases. The most common databases are Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS). While persistence of objects in RDBMS is limited by object-relational mismatch which is the inconsistency of the direct interaction between two components based on different approaches, OOP …

Digital image processing is an area that finds many applications in three-dimensional graphics. One of the subjects considered in image processing is detection of moving objects. In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of an algorithm that detects a moving object. The performance relates to the speed of moving object during a pre-determined time interval. The methodology supports Matlab integrated with built-in functions. Specifically, as input of the simulation model is a video material containing moving objects. The model reads a video file presenting moving objects; after the model is executed in Matlab, the output emits moving objects associated …

UBT International Conference
Network virtualisation is a concept that has been around for some time now, but the concept of network slicing is more recent and only started to be mentioned in the context of 5G. In essence, network slicing is a specific form of network virtualisation that enables sharing of physical resources by multiple logical network slices used to serve different applications and use cases. One such a use case would be to allocate network resources to small things, e.g. sensors and very low power consumption objects. To allow these small objects access to network resources or to a slice of such …

Bandwidth and computation-intensive Big Data applications in disciplines like social media, bio- and nano-informatics, Internet-of-Things (IoT), and real-time analytics, are pushing existing access and core (backbone) networks as well as Data Center Networks (DCNs) to their limits. Next generation DCNs must support continuously increasing network traffic while satisfying minimum performance requirements of latency, reliability, flexibility and scalability. Therefore, a larger number of cables (i.e., copper-cables and fiber optics) may be required in conventional wired DCNs. In addition to limiting the possible topologies, large number of cables may result into design and development problems related to wire ducting and maintenance, heat …

Effective Visualization Approaches For Ultra-High Dimensional Datasets, Gurminder Kaur
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Multivariate informational data, which are abstract as well as complex, are becoming increasingly common in many areas such as scientific, medical, social, business, and so on. Displaying and analyzing large amounts of multivariate data with more than three variables of different types is quite challenging. Visualization of such multivariate data suffers from a high degree of clutter when the numbers of dimensions/variables and data observations become too large. We propose multiple approaches to effectively visualize large datasets of ultrahigh number of dimensions by generalizing two standard multivariate visualization methods, namely star plot and parallel coordinates plot. We refine three variants …

Physical media (like surveillance cameras) and social media (like Instagram and Twitter) may both be useful in attaining on-the-ground information during an emergency or disaster situation. However, the intersection and reliability of both surveillance cameras and social media during a natural disaster are not fully understood. To address this gap, we tested whether social media is of utility when physical surveillance cameras went off-line during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Specifically, we collected and compared geo-tagged Instagram and Twitter posts in the state of Florida during times and in areas where public surveillance cameras went off-line. We report social media content …

Mixing workloads with multiple criticality levels raises challenges both in timing analysis and schedulability analysis. The timing models have to characterize the different behaviors that real-time tasks can experience under the various criticality modes. Instead, the schedulability analysis has to combine every task and task interactions providing several guarantees, depending on the criticality level demanded at runtime. With this work, at first, we propose representations to model every possible system criticality mode as a combination of task criticality modes. A set of bounding functions is obtained, a bound for each mode combination thus corresponding to a system criticality level. Secondly, …

Wireless access points are an effective solution for building scalable, flexible, mobile networks. The problem with these access points is often the lack of security. Users regularly connect to wireless access points without thinking about whether they are genuine or malicious. Moreover, users are not aware of the types of attacks that can come from “rogue” access points set up by attackers and what information can be captured by them. Attackers use this advantage to gain access to users’ confidential information. The objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the WiFi Pineapple NANO used as a rogue …

Towards A Development Of Predictive Models For Healthcare Hipaa Security Rule Violation Fines, Jim Furstenberg, Yair Levy
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act’s (HIPAA) Security Rule (SR) mandate provides a national standard for the protection of electronic protected health information (ePHI). The SR’s standards provide healthcare covered entities (CEs’) flexibility in how to meet the standards because the SR regulators realized that all health care organizations are not the same. However, the SR requires CEs’ to implement reasonable and appropriate safeguards, as well as security controls that protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA) of their ePHI data. However, compliance with the HIPAA SR mandates are confusing, complicated, and can be costly to CEs’. Flexibility in …

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to discuss a curriculum design that employs Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory stages and Kolb’s Learning Styles in four consecutive class sessions. The challenge each class is to present students with perplexing and often frustrating network problems that someday might be encountered on the job. By using Kolb’s theory, students address those problems from the perspective of each learning style, while passing through each phase of the learning cycle. As a result, students gain stronger cognitive thinking skills and hands-on troubleshooting skills in preparation for work as network administrators or cybersecurity analysts.
