Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Joint representation learning of words and entities benefits many NLP tasks, but has not been well explored in cross-lingual settings. In this paper, we propose a novel method for joint representation learning of cross-lingual words and entities. It captures mutually complementary knowledge, and enables cross-lingual inferences among knowledge bases and texts. Our method does not require parallel corpora, and automatically generates comparable data via distant supervision using multi-lingual knowledge bases. We utilize two types of regularizers to align cross-lingual words and entities, and design knowledge attention and crosslingual attention to further reduce noises. We conducted a series of experiments on …

Along with the upward trend in population ageing is the increasing proportion of the elderly population living alone in the community. This group is especially vulnerable as the onset of various physical, social and mental health issues may be more likely and may go undetected. However, smart homes enabled with elderly monitoring and care systems (EMCS) can now be used to alert caregivers of anomalies in the daily living patterns of the elderly. In this study, we focus on the sleep quality as the key living pattern, as it has been shown that poor sleep quality can lead to health …

User identity linkage across online social networks is an emerging research topic that has attracted attention in recent years. Many user identity linkage methods have been proposed so far and most of them utilize user profile, content and network information to determine if two social media accounts belong to the same person. In most cases, user identity linkage methods are evaluated by performing some prediction tasks with the results presented using some overall accuracy measures. However, the methods are rarely compared at the individual user level where a predicted matched (or linked) pair of user identities from different online social …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Formal specifications are important but often unavailable. Furthermore, writing these specifications is time-consuming and requires skills from developers. In this work, we present Deep Specification Miner (DSM), an automated tool that applies deep learning to mine finite-state automaton (FSA) based specifications. DSM accepts as input a set of execution traces to train a Recurrent Neural Network Language Model (RNNLM). From the input traces, DSM creates a Prefix Tree Acceptor (PTA) and leverages the inferred RNNLM to extract many features. These features are then forwarded to clustering algorithms for merging similar automata states in the PTA for assembling a number of …

Predicting User Interaction On Social Media Using Machine Learning, Chad Crowe
Student Work
Analysis of Facebook posts provides helpful information for users on social media. Current papers about user engagement on social media explore methods for predicting user engagement. These analyses of Facebook posts have included text and image analysis. Yet, the studies have not incorporate both text and image data. This research explores the usefulness of incorporating image and text data to predict user engagement. The study incorporates five types of machine learning models: text-based Neural Networks (NN), image-based Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Word2Vec, decision trees, and a combination of text-based NN and image-based CNN. The models are unique in their use …

Autospearman: Automatically Mitigating Correlated Software Metrics For Interpreting Defect Models, Jirayus Jiarpakdee, Chakkrit Tantithamthavorn, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The interpretation of defect models heavily relies on software metrics that are used to construct them. However, such software metrics are often correlated in defect models. Prior work often uses feature selection techniques to remove correlated metrics in order to improve the performance of defect models. Yet, the interpretation of defect models may be misleading if feature selection techniques produce subsets of inconsistent and correlated metrics. In this paper, we investigate the consistency and correlation of the subsets of metrics that are produced by nine commonly-used feature selection techniques. Through a case study of 13 publicly-available defect datasets, we find …

App reviews play an essential role for users to convey their feedback about using the app. The critical information contained in app reviews can assist app developers for maintaining and updating mobile apps. However, the noisy nature and large-quantity of daily generated app reviews make it difficult to understand essential information carried in app reviews. Several prior studies have proposed methods that can automatically classify or cluster user reviews into a few app topics (e.g., security). These methods usually act on a static collection of user reviews. However, due to the dynamic nature of user feedback (i.e., reviews keep coming …

Vpsearch: Achieving Verifiability For Privacy-Preserving Multi-Keyword Search Over Encrypted Cloud Data, Zhiguo Wan, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although cloud computing offers elastic computation and storage resources, it poses challenges on verifiability of computations and data privacy. In this work we investigate verifiability for privacy-preserving multi-keyword search over outsourced documents. As the cloud server may return incorrect results due to system faults or incentive to reduce computation cost, it is critical to offer verifiability of search results and privacy protection for outsourced data at the same time. To fulfill these requirements, we design aVerifiablePrivacy-preserving keywordSearch scheme, called VPSearch, by integrating an adapted homomorphic MAC technique with a privacy-preserving multi-keyword search scheme. The proposed scheme enables the client to …

Education institutions collect feedback from students upon course completion and analyse it to improve curriculum design, delivery methodology and students' learning experience. A large part of feedback comes in the form textual comments, which pose a challenge in quantifying and deriving insights. In this paper, we present a novel approach of the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model to address this difficulty in handling textual student feedback. The analysis of quantitative part of student feedback provides generalratings and helps to identify aspects of the teaching that are successful and those that can improve. The reasons for the failure or success, however, …

User identity linkage (UIL), the problem of matching user account across multiple online social networks (OSNs), is widely studied and important to many real-world applications. Most existing UIL solutions adopt a supervised or semisupervised approach which generally suffer from scarcity of labeled data. In this paper, we propose Factoid Embedding, a novel framework that adopts an unsupervised approach. It is designed to cope with different profile attributes, content types and network links of different OSNs. The key idea is that each piece of information about a user identity describes the real identity owner, and thus distinguishes the owner from other …

Today’s job market sees rapid changes due to technology and business model disruptions. To fully tap on one’s potential in career development, one has to acquire job and skill knowledge through working on different jobs. Another approach is to seek consultation with career coaches who are trained to offer career advice in various industry sectors. The above two approaches, nevertheless, suffer from several shortcomings. The on-the-job career development approach is highly inefficient for today’s fast changing job market. The latter career coach assisted approach could help to speed up knowledge acquisition but it relies on expertise of career coaches but …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we target at improving the performance of multi-label emotion classification with the help of sentiment classification. Specifically, we propose a new transfer learning architecture to divide the sentence representation into two different feature spaces, which are expected to respectively capture the general sentiment words and the other important emotion-specific words via a dual attention mechanism. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our transfer learning approach can outperform several strong baselines and achieve the state-of-the-art performance on two benchmark datasets.

Programming video tutorials showcase programming tasks and associated workflows. Although video tutorials are easy to create, it isoften difficult to explore the captured workflows and interact withthe programs in the videos. In this work, we propose a tool named VTRevolution – an interactive programming video tutorial authoring system. VTRevolution has two components: 1) a tutorial authoring system leverages operating system level instrumentation to log workflow history while tutorial authors are creating programming video tutorials; 2) a tutorial watching system enhances the learning experience of video tutorials by providing operation history and timeline-based browsing interactions. Our tutorial authoring system does not …

Modern software systems are increasingly dependent on third-party libraries. It is widely recognized that using mature and well-tested third-party libraries can improve developers’ productivity, reduce time-to-market, and produce more reliable software. Today’s open-source repositories provide a wide range of libraries that can be freely downloaded and used. However, as software libraries are documented separately but intended to be used together, developers are unlikely to fully take advantage of these reuse opportunities. In this paper, we present a novel approach to automatically identify third-party library usage patterns, i.e., collections of libraries that are commonly used together by developers. Our approach employs …

With the advent of social media, developers are increasingly using it in their software development activities. Twitter is one of the popular social mediums used by developers. A recent study by Singer et al. found that software developers use Twitter to “keep up with the fast-paced development landscape.” Unfortunately, due to the general-purpose nature of Twitter, it’s challenging for developers to use Twitter for their development activities. Our survey with 36 developers who use Twitter in their development activities highlights that developers are interested in following specialized software gurus who share relevant technical tweets. To help developers perform this task, in …

With recent increases in incidences of political violence globally, the world has now become more uncertain and less predictable. Of particular concern is the case of violence against civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire between armed state or non-state actors. Classical methods of studying political violence and international relations need to be updated. Adopting the use of data analytic tools and techniques of studying big data would enable academics and policy makers to make sense of a rapidly changing world.

Due to their aptitude in both accurate data processing and human comprehensible reasoning, neural fuzzy inference systems have been widely adopted in various application domains as decision support systems. Especially in real-world scenarios such as decision making in financial transactions, the human experts may be more interested in knowing the comprehensive reasons of certain advices provided by a decision support system in addition to how confident the system is on such advices. In this paper, we apply an integrated autonomous computational model termed genetic algorithm and rough set incorporated neural fuzzy inference system (GARSINFIS) to predict underpricing in initial public …

Privacy-Preserving Communication And Power Injection Over Vehicle Networks And 5g Smart Grid Slice, Yinghui Zhang, Jin Li, Dong Zheng, Ping Li, Yangguang Tian
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As an important combination of autonomous vehicle networks (AVNs) and smart grid, the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) network can facilitate the adoption of renewable resources. Based on V2G networks, parked electric vehicles (EVs) can charge during off-peak hours and inject excess power to the grid during peak hours for earnings. However, each EV's power injection bids in V2G are sensitive and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication may be eavesdropped, which has become an obstacle to the wide deployments of AVNs. Aiming to efficiently tackle these security and privacy issues in AVNs, we propose an efficient privacy-preserving communication and power injection (ePPCP) scheme without pairings, …

On The Sequential Massart Algorithm For Statistical Model Checking, Cyrille Jegourel, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Several schemes have been provided in Statistical Model Checking (SMC) for the estimation of property occurrence based on predefined confidence and absolute or relative error. Simulations might be however costly if many samples are required and the usual algorithms implemented in statistical model checkers tend to be conservative. Bayesian and rare event techniques can be used to reduce the sample size but they can not be applied without prerequisite or knowledge about the system under scrutiny. Recently, sequential algorithms based on Monte Carlo estimations and Massart bounds have been proposed to reduce the sample size while providing guarantees on error …

Many automated system analysis techniques (e.g., model checking, model-based testing) rely on first obtaining a model of the system under analysis. System modeling is often done manually, which is often considered as a hindrance to adopt model-based system analysis and development techniques. To overcome this problem, researchers have proposed to automatically “learn” models based on sample system executions and shown that the learned models can be useful sometimes. There are however many questions to be answered. For instance, how much shall we generalize from the observed samples and how fast would learning converge? Or, would the analysis result based on …

Machine learning has been used in various fields with thousands of applications. Extreme learning machine (ELM), which is the most recently developed machine learning algorithm, has become increasingly popular for its good generalization ability. However, it has been relatively less applied to the domain of social media. Support Vector Machine (SVM), another popular learning-based algorithm, has been applied for sentiment classification of social media text data and has obtained good results. This paper investigates and compares the capabilities of these two learning-based methods in the field of sentiment classification of social media. The results indicate that SVM can obtain good …

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) have higher requirements of continuous Location-Based Services (LBSs). However, the untrusted server could reveal the users’ location privacy in the meantime. Syntactic-based privacy models have been widely used in most of the existing location privacy protection schemes. Whereas, they are suffering from background knowledge attacks, neither do they take the continuous time stamps into account. Therefore we propose a new differential privacy definition in the context of location protection for the VANETs, and we designed an obfuscation mechanism so that fine-grained locations and trajectories will not exposed when vehicles request location-based services on continuous time …

Planning for civic amenities in a fast-changing urban setting such as Singapore is never an easy task. And as urban planners look toward more data-driven approaches toward urban planning, so grows the demand for more flexible geospatial analytics tools to facilitate a more iterative and granular approach toward urban planning. Such specific tools however, are not always readily available as plugins for traditional desktop GIS software, as numerous customizations must be made to model specific temporal planning scenarios for quick analysis, which could prove both costly and time-consuming. Hence, to address this need, open-source tools such as R Shiny could …
