Towards Optimal Implementation Of Decentralized Currencies: How To Best Select Probabilities In An Ethereum-Type Proof-Of-Stake Protocol, Thach N. Nguyen, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Nowadays, most financial transactions are based on a centralized system, when all the transaction records are stored in a central location. This centralization makes the financial system vulnerable to cyber-attacks. A natural way to make the financial system more robust and less vulnerable is to switch to decentralized currencies. Such a transition will also make financial system more transparent. Historically first currency of this type -- bitcoin -- use a large amount of electric energy to mine new coins and is, thus, not scalable to the level of financial system as a whole. A more realistic and less energy-consuming scheme …
Relativistic Effects Can Be Used To Achieve A Universal Square-Root (Or Even Faster) Computation Speedup, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Relativistic Effects Can Be Used To Achieve A Universal Square-Root (Or Even Faster) Computation Speedup, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, we show that special relativity phenomenon can be used to reduce computation time of any algorithm from T to square root of T. For this purpose, we keep computers where they are, but the whole civilization starts moving around the computer -- at an increasing speed, reaching speeds close to the speed of light. A similar square-root speedup can be achieved if we place ourselves near a growing black hole. Combining the two schemes can lead to an even faster speedup: from time T to the 4-th order root of T.

Secure Multi-Agent Quantum Communication: Towards The Most Efficient Scheme (A Pedagogical Remark), Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many economic and financial applications, it is important to have secure communications. At present, communication security is provided mostly by RSA coding, but the emergent quantum computing can break this encoding, thus making it not secure. One way to make communications absolutely secure is to use quantum encryption. The existing schemes for quantum encryption are aimed at agent-to-agent communications; however, in practice, we often need secure multi-agent communications, where each of the agents has the ability to securely send messages to everyone else. In principle, we can repeat the agent-to-agent scheme for each pair of agents, but this requires …

Mrsh-Mem: Approximate Matching On Raw Memory Dumps, Lorenz Liebler, Frank Breitinger
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper presents the fusion of two subdomains of digital forensics: (1) raw memory analysis and (2) approximate matching. Specifically, this paper describes a prototype implementation named MRSH-MEM that allows to compare hard drive images as well as memory dumps and therefore can answer the question if a particular program (installed on a hard drive) is currently running / loaded in memory. To answer this question, we only require both dumps or access to a public repository which provides the binaries to be tested. For our prototype, we modified an existing approximate matching algorithm named MRSH-NET and combined it with …

Often, we need to transform natural-language expert knowledge into computer-understandable numerical form. One of the most successful ways to do it is to use fuzzy logic and membership functions. The problem is that membership functions are subjective. It is therefore desirable to look for cases when the results do not depend on this subjective choice. In this paper, after describing a known example of such a situation, we list several other examples where the results do not depend on the subjective choice of a membership function.
Should School Feel Like A Family: Lessons From Business Controversy As Interpreted By Decision Making Theory, Olga Kosheleva, Julian Viera Jr., Vladik Kreinovich
Should School Feel Like A Family: Lessons From Business Controversy As Interpreted By Decision Making Theory, Olga Kosheleva, Julian Viera Jr., Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional business theory promoted the ideal of business as a family: everyone should feel good about each other, all employees should feel good working together towards a joint goal. Recently, however, researchers claim that the well-promoted ideal is unattainable, it is a ruse causing everyone to overwork. Instead, these researchers propose a non-emotional collaboration of adults working temporarily on a joint project. In this paper, we show that this new trend is not just based on anecdotal evidence, it actually has a solid foundation in decision theory. So maybe we should apply this new trend to teaching too - and …

From Gig Economy To Gig Education, Olga Kosheleva, Julian Viera Jr., Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Modern economy has benefited from gig economy idea, where, instead of hiring permanent employees, a company assigns each task to the person who is the most efficient in performing this task. This way, each task is performed in the best possible way -- by a person who is the most suited for this job. Why not extend this idea to education? Every student deserves the best possible teacher in every topic. So why not have a teacher who is the best in town in explaining quadratic equations teach quadratic equations to all the students from the town? In this paper, …

Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data With Hybrid Learning For Recommender Applications, Ketaki Gandhe, Aparna S. Varde, Xu Du
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This paper proposes a sentiment analysis approach to extract sentiments of tweets based on their polarity and subjectivity, classify them and visualize results graphically. This helps to understand opinions of existing users that can be helpful in future recommendations. Our proposed approach entails a hybrid learning method for classification of tweets based on a Bayesian probabilistic method for sentence level models given partially labeled training data. For implementation, we use AWS to extract data from Twitter, store extracted data in MySQL databases and code Python scripts in order to implement the analyzer. The graphical models are viewed using IPython Notebook. …

Learning Generalized Video Memory For Automatic Video Captioning, Poo-Hee Chang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Learning Generalized Video Memory For Automatic Video Captioning, Poo-Hee Chang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent video captioning methods have made great progress by deep learning approaches with convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN). While there are techniques that use memory networks for sentence decoding, few work has leveraged on the memory component to learn and generalize the temporal structure in video. In this paper, we propose a new method, namely Generalized Video Memory (GVM), utilizing a memory model for enhancing video description generation. Based on a class of self-organizing neural networks, GVM’s model is able to learn new video features incrementally. The learned generalized memory is further exploited to decode the …

Computer Science Publications
Orthopaedic simulators are popular in innovative surgical training programs, where trainees gain procedural experience in a safe and controlled environment. Recent studies suggest that an ideal simulator should combine haptic, visual, and audio technology to create an immersive training environment. This article explores the potentialities of mixed-reality using the HoloLens to develop a hybrid training system for orthopaedic open surgery. Hip arthroplasty, one of the most common orthopaedic procedures, was chosen as a benchmark to evaluate the proposed system. Patient-specific anatomical 3D models were extracted from a patient computed tomography to implement the virtual content and to fabricate the physical …

Neurodiversity is a term that encapsulates the diverse expression of human neurology. By thinking in broad terms about neurological development, we can become focused on delivering a diverse set of design features to meet the needs of the human condition. In this work, we move toward developing virtual environments that support variations in sensory processing. If we understand that people have differences in sensory perception that result in their own unique sensory traits, many of which are clustered by diagnostic labels such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Rett syndrome, dyslexia, and so on, then we …
Child-Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Technologies, And Big Data, Jerry Alan Fails
Child-Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Technologies, And Big Data, Jerry Alan Fails
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The children's technology landscape is changing quickly. The ubiquity of interactive technologies means children can access them just about anytime, anywhere. At the same time, these technologies constantly collect data from and about children, bringing them into the age of big data, voluntarily or not. These developments have the potential to significantly change children's relationship to technology and the long-term impact of technology use. To discuss these changes, the child-computer-interaction community held a special interest group (SIG) meeting during the CHI 2018 conference.
Supporting Diverse Customers And Prioritized Traffic In Next-Generation Passive Optical Networks, Naureen Hoque
Supporting Diverse Customers And Prioritized Traffic In Next-Generation Passive Optical Networks, Naureen Hoque
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The already high demand for more bandwidth usage has been growing rapidly. Access network traffic is usually bursty in nature and the present traffic trend is mostly video-dominant. This motivates the need for higher transmission rates in the system. At the same time, the deployment costs and maintenance expenditures have to be reasonable. Therefore, Passive Optical Networks (PON) are considered promising next-generation access technologies. As the existing PON standards are not suitable to support future-PON services and applications, the FSAN (Full Service Access Network) group and the ITU-T (Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union) have worked on developing …
A Comprehensive Framework To Replicate Process-Level Concurrency Faults, Supat Rattanasuksun
A Comprehensive Framework To Replicate Process-Level Concurrency Faults, Supat Rattanasuksun
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Concurrency faults are one of the most damaging types of faults that can affect the dependability of today’s computer systems. Currently, concurrency faults such as process-level races, order violations, and atomicity violations represent the largest class of faults that has been reported to various Linux bug repositories. Clearly, existing approaches for testing such faults during software development processes are not adequate as these faults escape in-house testing efforts and are discovered during deployment and must be debugged.
The main reason concurrency faults are hard to test is because the conditions that allow these to occur can be difficult to replicate, …
An Investigation Into The Imposed Cognitive Load Of Static & Dynamic Type Systems On Programmers, Ian Vaughn Koeppe
An Investigation Into The Imposed Cognitive Load Of Static & Dynamic Type Systems On Programmers, Ian Vaughn Koeppe
Student Work
Static and dynamic type systems have long been a point of contention in the programming language wars. Yet, for many years, arguments on either side were drawn from personal experience and not empirical evidence. A challenge for researchers is that the usability of language constructs is difficult to quantify, especially since usability can be interpreted in many ways. By one definition, language usability can be measured in terms of the level of cognitive load imposed on a developer. This can be done through questionnaires, but ultimately user responses are subject to bias. In recent years, eye-tracking has been shown to …

Ten Years Of Hunting For Similar Code For Fun And Profit (Keynote), Stephane Glondu, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In 2007, the Deckard paper was published at ICSE. Since its publication, it has led to much follow-up research and applications. The paper made two core contributions: a novel vector embedding of structured code for fast similarity detection, and an application of the embedding for clone detection, resulting in the Deckard tool. The vector embedding is simple and easy to adapt. Similar code detection is also fundamental for a range of classical and emerging problems in software engineering, security, and computer science education (e.g., code reuse, refactoring, porting, translation, synthesis, program repair, malware detection, and feedback generation). Both have buttressed …

Let's Take A Break: Analysis Of The Incubation Effect Among Students Using A Learning Game For Physics, May Marie P. Talandron-Felipe, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
This study continues prior work of the investigation and modeling of Incubation Effect, a phenomenon in which a momentary break helps the generation of a solution to a problem, among students using in a computer-based learning environment called Physics Playground. This paper attempts to improve the detection of IE-False by identifying notable features among instances of unsuccessful incubation by using a combination of t-SNE dimensionality reduction and x-means clustering techniques. We found that there are overlaps on some characteristics of IE-True and IE-False incidences but discovered features that do not make a break beneficial which are low success rate prior …
Netlight: Cloud Baked Indirect Illumination, Nathan Andrew Zabriskie
Netlight: Cloud Baked Indirect Illumination, Nathan Andrew Zabriskie
Theses and Dissertations
Indirect lighting drastically increases the realism of rendered scenes but it has traditionally been very expensive to calculate. This has long precluded its use in real-time rendering applications such as video games which have mere milliseconds to respond to user input and produce a final image. As hardware power continues to increase, however, some recently developed algorithms have started to bring real-time indirect lighting closer to reality. Of specific interest to this paper, cloud-based rendering systems add indirect lighting to real-time scenes by splitting the rendering pipeline between a server and one or more connected clients. However, thus far they …

Multicellular Models Bridging Intracellular Signaling And Gene Transcription To Population Dynamics, Mohammad Aminul Islam, Satyaki Roy, Sajal K. Das, Dipak Barua
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cell signaling and gene transcription occur at faster time scales compared to cellular death, division, and evolution. Bridging these multiscale events in a model is computationally challenging. We introduce a framework for the systematic development of multiscale cell population models. Using message passing interface (MPI) parallelism, the framework creates a population model from a single-cell biochemical network model. It launches parallel simulations on a single-cell model and treats each stand-alone parallel process as a cell object. MPI mediates cell-to-cell and cell-to-environment communications in a server-client fashion. In the framework, model-specific higher level rules link the intracellular molecular events to cellular …

Early Detection Of Disease Using Electronic Health Records And Fisher's Wishart Discriminant Analysis, Sijia Yang, Jian Bian, Zeyi Sun, Licheng Wang, Haojin Zhu, Haoyi Xiong, Yu Li
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is a simple and effective technique for pattern classification, while it is also widely-used for early detection of diseases using Electronic Health Records (EHR) data. However, the performance of LDA for EHR data classification is frequently affected by two main factors: ill-posed estimation of LDA parameters (e.g., covariance matrix), and "linear inseparability" of the EHR data for classification. To handle these two issues, in this paper, we propose a novel classifier FWDA -- Fisher's Wishart Discriminant Analysis, which is developed as a faster and robust nonlinear classifier. Specifically, FWDA first surrogates the distribution of "potential" inverse …

River: A Real-Time Influence Monitoring System On Social Media Stream, Mo Sha, Yuchen Li, Yanhao Wang, Wentian Guo, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social networks generate a massive amount of interaction data among users in the form of streams. To facilitate social network users to consume the continuously generated stream and identify preferred viral social contents, we present a real-time monitoring system called River to track a small set of influential social contents from high-speed streams in this demo. River has four novel features which distinguish itself from existing social monitoring systems: (1) River extracts a set of contents which collectively have the most significant influence coverage while reducing the influence overlaps; (2) River is topic-based and monitors the contents which are relevant …

Heterogeneous Embedding Propagation For Large-Scale E-Commerce User Alignment, Vincent W. Zheng, Mo Sha, Yuchen Li, Hongxia Yang, Yuan Fang, Zhenjie Zhang, Kian-Lee Tan, Kevin Chen-Chuan Chang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study the important problem of user alignment in e-commerce: to predict whether two online user identities that access an e-commerce site from different devices belong to one real-world person. As input, we have a set of user activity logs from Taobao and some labeled user identity linkages. User activity logs can be modeled using a heterogeneous interaction graph (HIG), and subsequently the user alignment task can be formulated as a semi-supervised HIG embedding problem. HIG embedding is challenging for two reasons: its heterogeneous nature and the presence of edge features. To address the challenges, we propose a novel Heterogeneous …

Using Finite-State Models For Log Differencing, Hen Amar, Lingfeng Bao, Nimrod Busany, David Lo, Shahar Maoz
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Much work has been published on extracting various kinds of models from logs that document the execution of running systems. In many cases, however, for example in the context of evolution, testing, or malware analysis, engineers are interested not only in a single log but in a set of several logs, each of which originated from a different set of runs of the system at hand. Then, the difference between the logs is the main target of interest. In this work we investigate the use of finite-state models for log differencing. Rather than comparing the logs directly, we generate concise …

Aligning Technical Debt Prioritization With Business Objectives: A Multiple-Case Study, Rodrigo Rebouças De Almeida, Uirá Kulesza, Christoph Treude, D’Angellys Cavalcanti Feitosa, Aliandro Higino Guedes Lima
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Technical debt (TD) is a metaphor to describe the trade-off between short-term workarounds and long-term goals in software development. Despite being widely used to explain technical issues in business terms, industry and academia still lack a proper way to manage technical debt while explicitly considering business priorities. In this paper, we report on a multiple-case study of how two big software development companies handle technical debt items, and we show how taking the business perspective into account can improve the decision making for the prioritization of technical debt. We also propose a first step toward an approach that uses business …

Gender Differences In Identity-Based Social Influence: An Experimental Examination Of Software Piracy Behavior, Noura Eisa Al Khyeli
Information Security Theses
Software piracy is the unauthorized copying, sharing, or using the software. It can be a profitable endeavor for individuals and a tremendous loss for the industry. According to Gulf News, Software piracy losses in the Arabian Gulf states in 2015 was 897$ million (AED 3.29 billion). Therefore, it is critical to understand as much as possible about the phenomenon and investigate the factors that influence subjects’ piracy behavior. Driven by gaps in previously published literature, the study presented here is an experimental investigation into the gender differences in identity-based social influence. In essence, the study examined if males or females …
